Since transitioning to Dr. Shamala, my experience has been very disappointing. Appointments are booked several months out, which defeats the purpose of having a primary care provider. When you're sick, you need timely access--not a long wait that forces you to rely on urgent care visits, as I've had to do multiple times. When I asked about the delays, I was told there are simply too many patients. That response was concerning. It feels like the focus is on taking on more patients rather than properly caring for existing ones. During the one appointment I was able to get (scheduled three months in advance), I felt rushed, as if the priority was moving quickly to the next patient rather than providing thoughtful care. Maybe my previous doctor set a very high bar, but this experience has been frustrating and disappointing. Accessibility and patient relationship are fundamental to primary care, and unfortunately, that has not been my experience here.

However, Dr. White is an exception to this. I actually like her quite a lot. She is a very knowledgeable and caring doctor as well as being pleasant in personality and demeanor. She appears to be passionate about what she does for a living and I always believe this is important when selecting a doctor because there really are too many who are not. I chose to see Dr. White for two reasons. The first is to manage my thyroid issues. The second is because I would like to have a seventh child and would like her to assist me with managing my nutrition and blood sugars prior to conception and during pregnancy rather than going to Obstetrix in San Jose. Most doctors can mange thyroid problems so an endocrinologist is not a must. I have previously seen an endocrinologist in San Jose who closed her practice and moved to another state. She was nice but seemed to care more about creating repeated appointments than the issues she was treating. I have had family doctors in the past who tested a couple times a year and managed my prescriptions just fine. I have also had my obgyn manage my prescription as well. They were all adequate but I do believe that Dr. White is more knowledgeable and concerned about dosing the medications than most doctors are. Dr. White explained very thoroughly about the dose of medications and all the things that might affect if/when my dose will need to be changed. In the past most doctors preferred to stick with whatever dose the particular pills come in even if it might be slightly more or less than what I need. This is not the case with Dr. White. She is meticulous about getting the right dose even if that means breaking up pills or taking extra or fewer pills to get the correct amount. I think this is rather refreshing because the dose being off even slightly can result in unpleasant symptoms that can be a part of the condition. I also appreciate that she is not concerned with the number of appointments that a patient has but rather just what it takes to give the treatment a patient needs. This is especially important for me because I am traveling quite a distance for these appointments. She is also not stingy with her time. My appointments were quite lengthy and well over what I have ever had with any doctor previously and I greatly appreciated the time she spent and the quality and thoughtfulness of the advice. As I am working to prepare my body for another pregnancy it is important for me to plan for care regarding my blood sugars and potential gestational diabetes. In the past I have had incredibly unpleasant care from Obstetrix in San Jose and after the last pregnancy I knew I would never go back to that place again. Dr. White has demonstrated far more professionalism in two visits regarding the issues of nutrition, dietary advice, and blood sugar monitoring than I have ever received during several pregnancies with Obstetrix. She was pleasantly easy to work with and gave constructive advice in a positive way without ever being condescending. She is far more knowledgeable than the staff at Obstretrix to be sure. I am certain that she will be a wonderful fit for my care during my future pregnancies and that is a huge relief. I would very much recommend her to others and anyone not happy with the Sweet Success program at Obstetrix in San Jose.

During my first appointment, Dr. White sat down with me to get all of my medical history, did an exam, and talked with me about what our goal would be moving forward... it took nearly an hour. It was so nice to have a doctor spend that much time with me. My second visit probably took just as long and was spent going over lab results, of which she gave me my very own copy and explained in detail what all the numbers meant. You can tell she has a genuine concern for her patient's health and their knowledge. Dr. White let me know up front that she is not one of those doctors who will make adjustments to your care without you understanding why. As a person who asks a lot of questions and wants to know all the details about my meds or insulin pump settings, I really love that about her. She is so hands-on with her approach to patient care, she's even personally called me twice. I have never had a doctor call me for any reason... it's usually a nurse or receptionist. Speaking of nurses and receptionists, this office employs the nicest ladies ever! The time spent in the waiting room is also a pleasant surprise, taking on average about five minutes. Believe me, after moving five times since being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, I've frequented plenty of doctors offices and none have been as welcoming and friendly as this one. After their visit, I spoke to them on the phone and they shared how hurtful and upsetting their visit was. Specifically, they shared that the way she communicated about their health not only felt unhelpful, but extremely hurtful. They felt judged and surprised when she suggested various recommendations for being overweight without asking any real questions about lifestyle, weight management throughout their life, successes, challenges, etc. She jumped to extreme solutions like a liquid diet and surgery, when overeating has never been something they have struggled with. They told me over the phone, pausing as they cried, "If I wasn't mentally stable, I would have left and killed myself." This was not something they had ever said before so wasn't them being dramatic - it was because their time with Dr. Borodulin was so painful. It was also shared that the Medical Assistant was extremely unprofessional, not saying anything when they came into the room to take BP and then yelling the numbers down the hall. I am a former Health Center manager, as well as a public health professional. I am also the wife of a physician. I understand patient care, the training physicians go through, and the responsibilities physicians have to their patients. Flippantly suggesting surgery without discussing previous challenges or success is absurd, as is suggesting a liquid diet for fast weight loss. I cannot stress enough what a terrible experience this provider created and would avoid seeing them at all costs.

I unfortunately had to deal with this office again to obtain my xray information for a visit to a specialist. On the phone, I requested a CD of the xray and Blanca told me that she would make the CD and have it at the front desk for my pickup so I could take it with me to my appt. When I got to the office, 30 min prior to my visit, there was only a paper copy of the results and the office staff; including Blanca told me they don't make CD's. I proactively sent an email to my doctor (Dr. Doscas) asking about some recent tests and prescriptions only to be notified that my doctor has left the practice. While Dr. Doscas was a great doctor, I'm puzzled by how this was all handled. I received no email or comms from my doctor, the management team nor was I given any guidance on next steps in switching doctors. This is unacceptable. I should have been proactively notified and should have been made aware of my options ASAP. I called and texted the office several times to speak to Dr. Gorman about my experience but did not receive a call back. Instead, I received an impersonal, cold and sterile letter a few days later notifying me that I needed to find another doctor. I would not recommend this practice to anyone given the sloppy nature of my situation was managed- it's completely unacceptable.
