First of all, it is necessary to make a distinction between Nico's Pizzeria and Nico's Rooftop Tavern. They both share the same address and phone number, and possibly the same kitchen. But one is head and shoulders above the other... literally! And that would be the Tavern because it is on the floor above the Pizzeria, and of course, the Rooftop is still one more level up. If you're looking for pizza slices or maybe a pizza to-go, the pizzeria on the ground floor is your place. If you want a full bar, a menu including a variety of pub foods, table service, and maybe a DJ spinning sounds, head on up the narrow staircase to the 2nd floor. The open sky can be found above a dozen tables still one further level up on the roof of the building. Our party of five was happy to score one of those dozen tables on the roof. Not just because it was a beautiful warm evening, but because the music in the tavern below was so loud that we would not have been able to carry on a conversation. Our group was here to sample a planned menu that has carried us from tavern to tavern throughout the Capital Region for over two years - wings, mozzarella sticks with Melba sauce, pizza, and wash it all down with good beer. And that was where we met our first hurdle. Beer is not sold by the pitcher at Nico's. Our server asked if we were going have a bucket. Apparently, that was a special that evening. We inquired what was available on draft and as our server went through the underwhelming list of fifteen, we decided upon pints of Ithaca Flower Power IPA, primarily because it was the only craft beer on draft. Our first order of wings were ordered with a hot sauce and tasted very good. They were still hot when served, the chicken on the flats was juicy, but a bit dry on the drumsticks. The hot sauce was not too hot, the only significant problem was that two of the ten wings were missing. The mozzarella sticks were pretty basic. We've had both better and worse. The Melba sauce was decent, it had a nice flavor and a good viscosity. For our first pizza we got what we call our "Steve N." It is a New York style red sauce with mozzarella, ham, bacon, and jalapeños. It should be noted that their "small" 6 slice pizza is not that small if you are eating other things. The crust at the edge of the pizza is very thick. It has a good flavor and requires a fair amount of chewing. Overall, the toppings were adequate but did not extend more than halfway from the center of the pie toward the edges. It was otherwise an enjoyable pizza. While we were enjoying the "Steve N", we ordered another round of Flower Power, more wings with hot sauce and extra crispy, and one of their Sicilian Style pizzas. At this point we also informed our server that we had been shorted two wings in the first order. In order to maximize our opportunity to sample more pizza toppings, we asked that half the Sicilian have sausage, onions, and peppers, and the other half be their chicken parmigiana topping. It took quite a long time for this order to be received. Both the wings and the pizza must have sat for awhile before coming to our table because both were only warm. The Sicilian is a huge square pizza cut into 12 slices. The end crusts are even thicker than what we had on the New York style - especially the corner slices. I did not find the chicken parm to be very tasty. Too much cheese and not enough chicken. The mozzarella didn't taste like or have a consistency like I was expecting. It was almost creamy in texture. The sausage was nothing special, and the onions and peppers were likely added raw after the pizza was removed from the oven. Our server was pleasant and accommodating to our special requests. The unique draw of Nico's may be either the open sky rooftop dining, or the Mug Club that they describe on their web page. Some of the appetizer items are huge portions for a mere $6. Great place to grab a beer, some above average pub food and watch a game. Walked in here somewhat unexpectedly last night due to being down the street at another restaurant for a pre-Proctor's show dinner (and never getting even a drink order in after 25 minutes of waiting...). It was nice to walk in, be greeted by a friendly face, quickly receive a couple of beers and place an order for an appetizer and dinner. The waitress was great - she was running around like a crazy person trying to keep everyone happy...but the kitchen wasn't keeping up with her, unfortunately. Most of the tables that were occupied were other theater-patrons....so everyone had a deadline as the theater shows do start on time. Proctor's is literally across the street, so Nico's is a great location. We did receive our appetizer (potato skins) after about 15 minutes of waiting and the main dishes (reuben and mediterranean salad) arrived without time for us to actually eat them. So, we wrapped our dinners up and threw them in the car. The little bit of my salad that I did try was very good and I was told that the reuben was excellent. I tried a few french fries and they were really good, too. Potato skins were solid. If you plan on dinner before any Proctor's show, make sure that you give yourself an almost ridiculous amount of time to have dinner anywhere in the vicinity. This is no stairway to heaven, and, like heaven, you may need to pray and be really really good if you expect to get a spot. We couldn't get a reservation for the roof over the phone, but when we arrived we were told tables COULD be reserved. Now I know I've been really really good, well, pretty good anyway, okay, maybe I'm bad, because they tried putting us in the dining room. However, our party of eight was now five so hey maybe they can get us a table. Ahem - the rooftop was NOT THAT BUSY. I'm guessing they had to talk to Gahd first. But it was a perfect night to sit outside once we made our final ascent, through the dreary pizzeria in hell and the dark tavern in purgatory on level two to the divine light of the rooftop. Beer choices: meh. Angels apparently prefer buckets of bottles. So it was Flower Power IPA for everyone at the table - this was the only standout on the menu. Wings: pretty good during round one except we were two short of quota - spicy and saucy, like me. The blue cheese dressing was watery bottled and came after we'd eaten the wings, though there were lots of fresh carrot sticks. Angels don't eat wings, FYI. Our thin crust pizza was good - crispy crust, lots of cheese, a bit shy on the sauce, tasty. The second round of wings and the Neopolitan pizza showed up lukewarm after almost an hours wait so they didn't shine with celestial light. Their Chicken Parm pizza wuz cheezy but bland. Went upstairs for a few cocktails and appetizers with the girls! They were very accommodating. They let us sample some of the different beers. We ordered the drunken cheddar balls, the Reuben Fries and the Black and Tan onion straws. The Reuben fries were delicious. They served them with Russian dressing and they did not skimp on the corned beef or kraut. I didn't get many of the drunken cheddar balls as these seemed to be popular amongst my group. They were crispy on the outside and deliciously cheesy on the inside! My personal favorite was the onion straws. Thin and crisp with a great seasoning. They drizzle some balsamic vinaigrette over the straws for some extra flavor. All the appetizers were wonderful and reasonably priced. read more

Let's start with the food, as that is one of the most crucial elements. My partner and I shared a Drunken Dutchman burger. That had a pretty unique taste - something about the caramelized onions and the cheese - that we both enjoyed. A lot. The fries were good, too. My mom was in town and got the turkey club. That thing was HUGE. Seriously. She said it tasted great, but I didn't try it as I do not eat pork. We also ordered the Reuben fries as an app; those were so-so. Like, if you're having a few drinks, sure. If you're getting food, just get food and skip it as an app. I wasn't in love with the corned beef on it, nor did I feel it had enough/the right toppings. We also shared the Cookie Sundae as a dessert and it was more than enough for three. Again, if you like dessert, this is a nice ending. If you're on the fence, you're not missing anything special. The drink selection looked decent, but I didn't really check out the options. I saw Cherry Wheat, went with that, and called it a night. My mom got a Coors Light; it was Happy Hour, and she was happy to get a bigger beer for $4. When I first looked at the menu, I thought the food itself was a bit pricier than I expected, given the vibe of the place. Some things, like the Reuben fries, were well-priced at $6, but other options seemed more expensive than reasonable. We ended with a decent bill, but that's because I split with my partner and we made decisions, in part, based on the price of items. Now, the environment: The place itself is nicely done.It looks like it was redone sometime recently, and the designer made the right choices. I didn't eat in the upstairs dining area, but it looked tempting. The bathroom was nice, and the bar was nice. The quick glimpse I got into the pizza place downstairs was also nice. The rooftoop looked like it had been redone recently. I hoped to be able to look out onto the street, but you're basically in the middle of the roof and have no view other than the building across the street. I could see it being nicer when it's dark as they have string lights. There were only about 7/8 tables on the roof, so it wasn't huge. The service was friendly, if basic. Nothing to rave about, absolutely nothing to complain about. Overall, I'm not sure I would return, left to my own devices. It's hard to put my finger on what's missing, but something is. Also, there are places I like better in the area. However, my partner LOVED the burger, so we will probably go back to split it at some point as it is close to home for us. If you're from out of town or want a low-key place to grab some drinks and/or food, I think this place could work for you. read more

This place is above the pizza shop, and is not the same restaurant. Went here on a whim the other night, and I really enjoyed it. They have a decent draft selection, and the menu has some great and different options. To start, we shared Ruben fries and an order of boneless wings. The Ruben Fries were outstanding, one of the best apps I have ever had. The boneless buffalo wings were also very tasty. For an entree we ordered a buffalo chicken pizza, open face sandwich, and a salad. I can't comment on the salad, but the other two options were really good, and we have plenty to take home. This place is really under-rated. I wish I had come sooner, as the prices are really, really, really good for what you get. The quality of food was great too. I have Wednesdays off from work, and this was an awesome place to spend my day off. Trivia was a blast, good beer on tap, and the food was pretty darn good. I highly recommend the Black and Tan onion straws, and a burger. I got the Godfrey myself and couldn't even think about finishing it. Great stop on a night out with friends. Came during winter so the rooftop obviously wasn't open, but I'm looking forward to coming here more, especially during the warmer months to see what that's all about. Very cool place, one of my favorite spots downtown. The tavern is nice, bar is big, and the rooftop area is awesome. Kind of wish the rooftop area was closer to the front of the building for a better street view, but it's great nonetheless. Food wise, great tavern food, and if you've ordered from Nico's in the past, prior to the tavern addition, you know it's some of the best pizza you can find around here. The fries dishes are awesome value and some unique options (cheap and huge portions). One of my favorites is the buffalo shrimp, I go there just for them. They've always got a pretty good selection of beers as well. Bar staff is very knowledgable of their beers and liquors. Bar rarely gets too crowded or crazy, part of the reason why I like going so much. read more

I frequent this place on Wednesdays when they do trivia. The waitress is very nice, but the service is not good. I don't blame the waitress though, the place is always packed and they have 1 waitress and 1 bartender for an average of probably 60 people. The result is you finally order your drink after sitting for anywhere to 5 to 25 minutes. But she doesn't take your order yet, just the drinks. Maybe if you're lucky she drops of a menu, but not always. 10 minutes later you get your drink and hopefully it's what you ordered. Then you get to order food and if you were lucky enough to have the menu beforehand you' do. If not, she'll be back because she has 10 other tables to wait on and she can't wait for you to look the menu over now. Then you wait some more. By the time you get your food you've been seated for at least an hour, on average 1 hour 30 minutes. Certainly waited longer though, too. The food is good. Beer selection is eh. This could be a 4 star review if they had 1 more waitress on busy nights. read more

Like Nicholas Y said, this place would be the RADDEST in the area, however, they need to move the rooftop seating closer to the front of the building so you could have a view of the downtown area. But, the distressed brick, cool hanging lights, and hip music certainly make this one of my new favorite places to unwind. Growing up we always loved going to Nico's Pizza. The place was in dire need of an update but the Pizza was great the guys were fun to talk to. When they started construction on the building and I heard they were doing a full remodel, i couldn't be more excited. I'll get right to the point: the pizza is still great but if you're going to the "rooftop tavern" get ready for some bad (and I mean BAD) customer service. I've been there about a dozen times so far and usually it's okay, theyre rude and slow but you can get over it. That was then. The last few times I've been there they were especially rude and the last time, which was a couple weeks ago, was so bad I don't think I'll ever go back. First of all there's only 1 or 2 people working the whole restaurant so it's understandable if it take them a minute to get to us. We came in with a party of 6 and wanted to push two tables together. We waited for about 5 minutes and They were busy so we cleaned the tables of empties and moved two tables together. Trying to help out. I even brought all of them to the bar for the waitress. When they saw us push the tables together, the woman behind the bar quite loudly said, "I'm not serving them." And looked disgusted that we had cleaned the table for them. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe they were talking about someone else. Another 5 minutes go by and were just talking and waiting patiently and a few in our group could see she was complaining to people at the bar about us. When we made eye contact with her she made it clear and said ," I'm not serving you." To us loudly across the bar as she angrily shook her head. What did we do? We weren't drunk or rowdy, we were there with my parents trying to have dinner. As soon as that happened we stood up and left and i don't think i'll go back in my life. It was such a bad feeling to be treated that way. I'm not sure if it was the fact that we cleaned for the m or that we moved the tables or if there was something else we did that i'm not aware of. No uniform or proper dress attire they were in tees and sweatpants! a few people at the bar where you can order drinks, there quite affordable ranging from $4-6 and one bartender. No music on the rooftop, no view I can't review the food the ambience had very casually dressed people not somewhere I would go for a special event. I heard the food can be good so well just have to try them for food. Parking can be challenging but overall not the worst place to be. The food was okay, but it was overpriced for the quality. I got a fish and fries basket (it's a battered piece of haddock with French fries) and the cost was $13.50. Seemed pricy, but I had a living social deal where I paid $15 to get $30 at nico's so I figured "okay, why not?!". We also had potato skins to start and my husband got a cheese steak sandwich. The potato skins were okay, not terrible, but I've definitely had better. When my fish came it was sizable, covered almost the entire top of the basket of fries underneath. It was good, but the breading was thick and very crunchy so it made it hard to cut. Not the end of the world. The fries under it looked super crispy, but actually were really soggy. I believe the problem was that they covered them with the hot fried fish and it took away any crispness they had originally had so I only ate 1/4 of them. The steak sandwich my husband had he said was not bad, but as soon as we started leaving he was complaining about his stomach and continued to have pains the rest of the night. My husband can literally eat anything and never have stomach issues so this surprised me. As for the rooftop, it's nice to be outside, but there is no view at all from the roof. It's about half of their roof and it's the half that is not near state street so you can't see all the charm of downtown Schenectady from up there. Also, people smoke up there while you're eating and if you're okay with that then it's fine, but it is not my preference. Since we have so many amazing options in the downtown area I don't think I would come back to Nico's Rooftop because nothing about seemed to really thrill me. I always have a great experience when I come here. The wings are very good and they have a variety of sauces (honey mustard and the thai are my favorite). Their famous peanut butter and jelly wings are always good too, but I only like them bone in. Also, the Black and Tan onion straws are A+. For the most part the bartenders are good. Let me start by saying the food is great! We came in on a Tuesday night and we practically had place to ourselves. Even with that we waited awhile for our food. It was longer than anticipated, but worth it. (Hence the 4/5 stars). My boyfriend had the boneless wings, half peanut butter/jelly and the other half Jack Daniels BBQ. He preferred the PBJ, but both were good. I had the Mac and cheese with Buffalo Shrimp. It was fantastic. Looking forward to a return visit for sure. read more

Although their food is great; I have noticed that this place isn't handicap accessible. The only way to get upstairs to the bar, is by walking up the stairs, and there isn't an elevator available for individuals who have to use a wheelchair. I hope that they read this review, and possibly take some consideration in providing handicap access to the upstairs lounge. By limiting your customers, you are missing out on their money. They are spending it next door at Bombers, because Bombers provides an elevator for the handicapped. read more

I walked in to pick up an order that I made and it was sweltering hot in there, they forgot 2 things on my order so I had to sit there and wait for them to make the missing items. It costs $13 for an order of chicken tenders and french fries. The chicken tenders were awful, they were so hard I couldn't even bite into them. The BBQ sauce that came with it was nasty too, it was more of a watered down sweet ketchup mixture. My co-worker ordered a sausage sub and they forgot to put cheese and sauce on it like she asked so it was just bread, sausage and onion, she didn't even bother to eat it because it was a mess. Had an encounter with this establishment for the Schenectady Soup Stroll. They had run out of their original soup, but luckily I arrived when a new batch was ready! Great news. I headed upstairs and got in line. Not a long wait, after getting to the front I asked the server what kind of soup it was. He said, and I quote, "honestly I don't even know". Okay. Upon tasting, I could easily figure out what it was. This soup was a creamy broth watered down about 50/50 to an uncomfortably milky consistency. Drifting in the were soggy oyster crackers. Now these are traditionally served alongside soups, but today a thoughtful chef got them good and squishy for me. The real gem of the soup were the mixed vegetables. They were akin to what remains in your sink strainer after washing a large sink of dirty dishes. I've eaten canned mixed vegetables before, and let's just these were worse. Please, if you run out of soup, just be proud enough to say you're out, and have some dignity. read more
