Dining partner ordered Chicken Shawarma OR Chicken Biryani, not sure which!
    Kimberly G.

Food: I especially LOVE the veggie combo and the lentil soup. The meats are often dry so I don't order them anymore. Service in house: is pretty good. Always friendly. Sometimes trouble getting the attention of waitstaff. Ambiance: prefer to use take out. It's a cafeteria like experience in the restaurant. Note: I used to go there more, but prices have increased to the point that it's a special treat for me.

Shwarma King is a fantastic spot in Kalamazoo. The food is excellent in quality and highly authentic. I got the Shish Tawook dinner plate with rice and french fries. The chicken was perfectly grilled and was so moist. It had an excellent charbroiled flavor with a wonderful marinade that had an earthy spice. The rice was perfectly cooked and moist and it complemented the chicken very well along with the fries. It also comes with a dip, which I believe was toum or garlic mayo. This place has me giving it a 4/5, however, because the restaurant itself. The floors, walls, and corners seemed like they haven't been cleaned in ages. It was really unappetizing to look at and I stopped being hungry while waiting for my food. The wonderful dishes were a good distraction from the ambience. Unfortunately, this restaurant is better as take-out than dining in if you want to maintain your appetite.

Luckily, they had a couple juices on hand for tasting purposes. Even after I tried a few I still had a hard time because I liked everything I tried! So there I was stuck in juice turmoil. I told the customer behind me to go ahead and they seemed like they knew their juices. They ordered a quick shot of a concentrated juice and then they were on their way. It sounded perfect. And it was. Being super tasty and super cool makes this a great hidden gem on the Mall.

I've learned what my personal preferences are, and that's a big thing with making my juice purchase worthwhile. I seem to enjoy veggie based juices with a good hit of sweetness- like adding pineapple, lime, or apple. I don't enjoy juices with ginger, just my taste. My favorite juice on their current menu is "Raise the Barre", which is a green juice with some sweetness from fruit and a hint of spice from jalapenos (it's not hot). I've tried some of their natural snacks as well, like the fruit rolls and dehydrated tomato pizza bites. Again, all great. I would highly recommend anyone check out Juicy Leaf! They seem pretty active on social media- facebook and instagram, so check that out for menus and even some deals/ discounts I've seen. Gives you an idea of price, too. While I recommend this to everyone, I always warn/ inform people about price. I'm inclined to think that many people don't know the appropriate price point for these types of juices (Gee, a bottle of simply orange juice is $2 at meijer!). From what I've seen at other cold-pressed juice places, the prices here are pretty average. Remember that you're getting a whole load of fruits and veggies! 8oz are usually $5, 16oz are $9 for most juices. They do offer cleanses, too (not my thing though). Do note that their bottles note a warning regarding that they are not heat-processed, etc. May not be a good choice for someone sensitive to allergens in food- definitely ask the employees if you're concerned. I personally have never had an issue but just a note to keep in mind for any product of this nature, not just here! So all in all, I'm not mad at price. I do consider these juices a splurge for me personally, but I'm cheap and also consider buying coffee at a shop a splurge! Oh, they do offer coffee and warm drinks too. Employees are nice and knowledgeable. Definitely check it out!

That would have been good to know that we needed to ask for our food. The Thai Chicken Salad (ordered without wontons) and dressing was good. I usually order the Chicken Pesto Flatbread and the salad was a nice alternative. On our first visit to Playa Bowls, the workers were so patient and informative (and cheerful!), helping us with our order and answering questions we had (for example, possible substitutions of ingredients to make the bowls Vegan). The menu that is on the wall is so varied and expansive that at first, ordering can seem daunting. However, after their explanations, our options became clearer. I suggest looking at their menu at playabowls.com before going. (For Vegans, generally: Blueberry Flax Granola can be changed to Vegan/Gluten Free Granola for 50¢, Whey Chocolate or Vanilla Protein can be changed to Vegan Chocolate or Vanilla Protein. Honey can be removed from orders. And the Coco-Whip is Vegan.) The workers pride themselves on the artistry of the bowls! So many times at other fast food or fast-casual restaurants, the food that is served looks nothing like the photographs in the advertising. However, at Playa Bowls in Kalamazoo, the bowls often look better than the advertisements! Because we had such a wonderful time and the bowls were so delicious, we returned multiple times over the next couple of weeks. Sometimes the workers were the same, sometimes they were different, but every time, the people there provided us with the same warm and welcoming experience and beautifully crafted bowls!

I only ate about half and it tasted great leftover, too. (It is NOT like pizza!) My friends both had the lentil soup and grape leaves and enjoyed both dishes. I've tried grape leaves before and don't care for them, but my friend convinced me to try it - and it was the best I've ever tried! The leaf wasn't tough and there was a nice wrapper to filling ratio. I knew I had to get the knafeh, again a dish I've seen on tv but never had. I was doing the Food Dance! It tasted more like a casserole with the thick heavy base, and did not have the Mediterranean taste we came to love in our time living in the Middle East. This felt like a poor facsimile of American pizza with some Turkish toppings. These two items came to $38 quite a premium for two items. It does keep you full though...
