Shawarma King? More like Shawarma Joker. While the hospitality here is great, the food was absolutely disappointing. My family and I only enjoyed the vermicelli rice. Most of the entrees tasted stale, especially the okra and carrots that were coated in tomato sauce. All the meat were dry. On a Friday evening we ventured out to crave something different and decided that some Shwarma King was in order. A little distance from home added to our anticipation of a hot buffet, filled with great food. To our surprise, the restaurant was pretty empty but the buffet table was full and hot. We started with fantastic lentil soup and a salad. The lettuce was a little old (and a bit brown), but it was still good, with fresh tomatoes too. We piled the next plate with fresh hommous and baba ganoush and dipped our pita bread in accordingly. Main course was plentiful, with chicken and beef dishes accompanied by different rice blends and a little falafel, which was a bit dry for my taste. Overall, for a $16 buffet, I would come back occasionally for some good middle eastern fare! read more

This is truly some of the best Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food I've ever had. I used to eat regularly at a large buffet in Fort Worth, Texas and although this place doesn't have their variety they are definitely their equal on quality. Every time I visit Kalamazoo, this place is a stop I absolutely MUST make. It's one of my favorite places to eat. They offer a variety of fresh, hot, tasty foods on the buffet including my favorites: chicken shawarma, rice with the little noodles in it, hummus, garlic sauce, salad, crunchy fried pita chips, and a variety of vegetables. What I love the most is being able to add as much garlic sauce as I please to my meal. The customer service is always warm and friendly at Shawarma King. Food: The food was fresh and had amazing flavors. The lentil soup was extremely rich in flavor. The shish kafta was very savory. Environment: It was pretty empty when I went during their dinner hours. Due to covid most people rather take their food to go. I enjoyed having the dining area to myself. It was nice and quiet and very neat and up kept. Staff: The staff are very nice and helpful. I never have a problem with their well mannered staff. Due to covid the staff have to make your plate for you at the buffet, but you can stand next to them and point out what you'd like. This place, is a jewel. I love Lebanese food, not only is it good for you, it tastes good too. The price is good and I the food is well made. The hummus and tabbouleh are perfect. The meats and bread are seasoned well and tender. I always make sure to have some salad too, very nicely dressed and savory. Only problem it is on the other side of this am from where I work, so I don't get to eat there often. Just driving through the area and found on Yelp. So happy we did! Arrived with the intent of trying buffet lunch ($13). Cold/salad bar (about 8 choices) and Hot/soup/entree bar (about 12 choices) had very good selections. Food is not heavily seasoned but has the distinct Lebanese flavors in certain dishes. Standouts for us were: hummus, baba ghanouge (spelling?), garlic dip, fresh deep fried pita chips, salad, Falafel, majoudra (spelling?), chicken shawarma, lentil soup & okra stew. We ate 2nd & 3rds of these items in particular. Rice pudding dessert was good but not as thick as I prefer. The two buffet bars are VERY clean and so is the restaurant. Entrees all look appetizing and are kept filled. Pepsi products with free refills. A basket of generous pita bread comes with meal. Staff is very, very nice. Great keep up with clearing tables. Restaurant stayed busy with dine in and carry out (7.99lb.). They have been around for 15 yrs when I inquired. I see how they have maintained the business with the great quality of food and service. Pretty good. I went here for lunch today when in town visiting friends. It's definitely not anything fancy, but they had beef and chicken shwarma, as well as all the garlic paste you want (yesss!). Lunch is $9.99 a person which is fair, too. I had some shwarma, falafel, potatoes, mint tea, and rice pudding, for dessert. I unfortunately wasn't super hungry today but next time will do some damage here, ha. My favorite items were the beef shwarma and the rice pudding. They also had soup and salad. Waitservice was extremely prompt and they actually come around with a coffee pot full of tea, for the mint tea refills, too. After reading the other reviews and looking at pictures I was really excited to try this place. It was well-packed for a Thursday evening. I opted for the buffet. Sadly it didn't meet my expectations. I tried all the meats: lamb, beef shawarma, both kinds of chicken, vegetable soup, pita chips, hummus, baba, falafel, and collared greens if I remember correctly. Everything was dry and quite bland. I dipped pretty much everything in the hummus/baba to make it more palatable. The pita chips were too greasy and I like greasy foods. Nothing tasted bad, but there was nothing that made me particularly excited to return to the buffet station for round 2. Service was fine and the staff were really nice. I hope the regular menu options are better better. I was super curious about this place for about a month and I'm glad I finally tried it. I just don't plan on returning. read more

They have great budgeted sandwiches if you aren't feeling buffets. They will now serve you for your buffet which is good especially with Covid. Their to go buffets are weighted per pound. I have been coming to this restaurant for about 12 years. Every time I'm in Kalamazoo I stop in and recommend it to everyone. If you eat a single plate of food it costs $12.99 for unlimited. If you are in a hurry and need to take it to go? Now that plate is $18.99 because they want to include things like hummus and tahini in the weight. I won't be ripped off because I don't have time to sit and eat. The amount of food eaten didn't change nor your food cost. What changed was you wanting to double the price for the same amount of food. If you can't understand why that's awful to do to your customers? Then you don't deserve long term customers and people bringing new people in there. Change the price on the weight to be equal per pound to the dine in rate. One plate should cost same as Buffett, more than one plate charge more. read more

On this trip I had to kill few hours in Kalamazoo and I decided I'll try this place out. Their buffet is most popular and restaurant was packed around noon for lunch buffet. Buffet offers: Main dishes. 2 vegetable dishes. Chicken Shawarma Beef Shawarma Grill chicken 3 types of rice. Falafel Side dishes. Garlic butter. Hummus Salad Yogurt salad Tahini sauce. Lemon Fried pita And more. Variety is good. Service was wonderful. Food was good and definitely great for being far from major cities. I like spicy. Their hot sauce was more close to Tabasco and I'm more of a fan of chili sauce. Wasn't too impressed. I didn't see a single Middle Eastern person dinning in a full restaurant so I'm sure their customers love them and they should. Cost of buffet is $9.95 which was a good deal. Drinks are extra. My favorite buffet by far. If you love middle eastern food and as much garlic sauce as you can eat... this is the place for you. I've been here at least 4 times now and have not been disappointed yet. They have never ending chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, multiple rices, GARLIC SAUCE, hummus, pita, baba ganoush, lentil soup, and more. And if you're not feeling the buffet (who wouldn't though!) you can come in purchase a to go box and fill it up!! It's awesome because the buffet has also allowed me to try new things and stray from my usual chicken shwarma sandwich that i get every time lol. The staff is very nice and they are always stocking the tray line with fresh food. There were some standout dishes on the buffet, the green beans were my favorite, big ones in a rich tomato based sauce, the lentil rice called moujadrah and the lentil soup which had a wonderful flavor. There were a number of meat dishes, a chicken shawarma and a chicken kebab in a gravy, a beef shawarma, and a kefta kebab in gravy as well. I think these aren't meant to be eaten on their own, they're fine as is but really come to life when topped with the garlic sauce, tahini and the cucumber yogurt. I had fun making little sandwiches with the Lebanese thin pitas they put down on each table. There is also a yellow rice pilaf and a white rice pilaf. It's rounded out with okra, greens and falafel. The side table had hummus, baba ghanoush, a delicious mixed salad, and a few other sauces plus rice pudding and fruit for dessert. There were some dishes that I didn't care for, the flavor was odd to me but overall it was above average and a nice change of pace to find a Middle Eastern buffet. What really made the experience though was the really wonderful waitstaff. We came in with three kids and they were so kind and attentive, patient and understanding. Our kids can be fussy, eat very little and we ordered off the menu and they split it. They totally understood, brought us a heaping plate and wrapped it all to go. It wasn't worth it for the buffet for the kids and some places are weird about it, but thank you Shawerma along for letting the adults get their Mediterranean fix. I've eaten lunch here three times (twice dining in and once ordering takeout) and the buffet was great on every occasion. The standout dish for me is the chicken shawarma--eaten on pita with hummus and the superb garlic sauce. They have a good variety on the lunch buffet: at least three different kinds of rice, salad, falafel, steamed veggies, some different stewed vegetables, and of course shawarma (both chicken and beef). There's also soup and plenty of other dishes I didn't mention here. The waitstaff is very friendly and attentive as well! We never went without soda refills and our waitress was always prompt in collecting our used plates. The lunch buffet costs $9.99 plus tax per person and beverages are $1.50. This is a very fair price considering the variety and quality of the food available. You can also order a takeout box from the buffet which is weighed and priced per pound (I think this is something like $6-$7 per pound) and includes complementary pita bread. I accidentally overdid it when I got takeout; I paid about $11, but I had plenty of great food for two big meals. Overall, Shawarma King is great and I will definitely be coming back in the future. read more
