There were so many interesting choices in the menu that it was hard to choose, but we started with an appetizer of papand with two chutneys, lamb jalfrezi, garlic ginger soup, a sweet lassi, chai tea and the bread basket (4 huge naan breads) we were pleasantly stuffed, with plenty of leftovers and then were offered complimentary rice pudding! The vegetable pakoras are delicious, the mango lassi is delicious, the kheer (rice pudding) is very good, and the entrees themselves are always very good, albeit sometimes too spicy for me (but I have the spice tolerance of a 10 year old from the suburbs). We had orders of chicken biryani, Shahjahani, and jalfrezi. The Shahjahani was mild and delicious, the jalfrezi and Shahjahani were a bit spicier and very good. The place is pretty small, with three booths and only 5 tables, but there is usually room to sit. The place seems family-run and the servers are always very polite and kind. The good: They offer dine in services during Covid, as well as pickup and takeout. The staff is friendly and is a family owned business. The food is great and I keep coming back for their Nan bread. I suggest trying their Butter Garlic, and their Cheese nan. Their prices are decent and they have a decently large menu with many of your favorite authentic Indian options. This review is mainly for the food. This is a family run restaurant that is understaffed but tries its best to keep authenticity of home cooked traditional north and east indian food. By food quality it's the best indian food place in the kzoo portage area. We tried paneer Makhni and goat Masala, samosa chaat, aloo Tikki with chickpeas. The best part of this place is that it uses high quality and fresh paneer and meat, you can just take a bite and tell. For a change, this place does not try to drown the dish with spice, so you can appreciate the actual main ingredient like the meat or the paneer. Also the garlic Naan was soft but had a slight crisp at the same time; again something that is what ideal Naan should be but very difficult to pull off but cumin does it well. Since the food is prepped fresh and the restaurant is understaffed , it takes an hour on average to get food on your table, which can be frustrating. The restaurant is pretty small so if you looking for fancy dinner this is not the place. If you are looking for authentic Indian flavor with high quality ingredients and willing to wait a while for it, this should be your go to. read more

Excellent food and excellent service. This was my first time having Indian and I'm glad my first experience was here. We started with the chicken samosa which was pretty good. And the Onion/ Potato Pakoras. Excellent!! Appetizers. I loved the sweet dipping sauce but the other white yogurty one wasn't bad. I'd definitely order the pakoras again. I ordered the shrimp hussaini which was excellent. I got it a little too spicy but I'll know better for next time. The garlic naan was so good that I ordered some to go with my leftovers, because I could only eat half of my meal. We samples the lamb marsala. It was good and tender and creamy. I'll probably order that next time. My brother ordered the chicken curry. I really liked that too. That's was my first experience eating curry. To top it off and to luckily take some of the string out of my mouth, I had the traditional mango lassi! It must be the original yogurt smoothy and it was wonderful. Went for lunch today. We hadn't had Indian food before. The onion hush puppie like things were awesome. The server help us with a few samples. The lamb was great. My sister ordered a shrimp dish,the server asked how hot she wanted. Sister said 4 out of 10 would be good. A 4 burned my tastebuds. The flavor was excellent but the heat was WOW. The garlic Nan was to die for. The yellow yogurt drink reminded me of drinking butter. The only part of the meal I didn't like, but my sister drank it. I should qualify that by saying, so far the dishes I've had there are the chicken tikka masala, the chicken vindaloo, and the chicken curry. You can get these mild to hot spicy. Te garlic naan bread is excellent as are the chicken samoas. They also have many vegetarian options as you'd imagine in an Indian restaurant. I can't say enough good things about this place. DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY FROM THIS RESTAURANT!!!! If there was a way to give no stars I would have in this instance. I ordered delivery. Cumin uses the Mr.Delivery delivery service. After waiting almost 2 hours I received the wrong order. As we were hungry, we opened up the order to see if it was something we would eat. The tops of the containers all have holes poked in them and the delivery service did not keep them level so all the food containers were covered in spilled sauce. The potato pancakes were cold and hard. The Naan was no longer warm. As we are vegan and all three of the dishes had meat, we were out of luck. We've had this place a couple times and it is good Indian food in the area. The chicken samosas are very good. The masala wada is a fried chickpea dish kind of like falafel that we would not order again. It was good not great. Our main dishes were awesome. We had Gobi Dilpsand (Cauliflower and potato dish) and a chicken dish called chicken jalfrezi. My husband got a level 8 spice and it was spicy for sure but great flavor. Would definitely recommend and would definitely get again. The meals come with rice and we like that. Rice pudding is also delicious but very sweet so keep that in mind if that isn't your thing. There were maybe three meat dishes to choose from but all chicken. It was not busy so we were greeted upon our entrance, we picked where we sat. Wow! I was surprised to find such good Indian food and with such a following in Kalamazoo! Coming from the east side of the state with a wealth of Indo-Pak cuisine, I really didn't expect much from a town with two Indian eateries. I took my daughter and her roommate here for a birthday lunch. We had friendly service from a waitperson who was known by and knew many of the customers. She knew the regular orders of many who came in, and was very knowledgeable of the menu, including level of spice. The menu has a good variety of vegetarian and meat dishes and all were great. My daughter loved her favorite paneer dish, and my lamb was excellent. The rice was good, and we all enjoyed the garlic naan. As stated by another individual, DO NOT ORDER DELIVERY from this place. You will either not get your order, and WILL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK, or it will be 2-3 hours. They know there is an issue and will blame the customer. Three months ago, I ordered $50 dollars worth of food, got a text saying my order was canceled but Grubhub never refunded the money since it was outside of their system. When I called the waitress told me the order was canceled, but later the cook said he made the food anyways and left it sitting there thinking that I would magically realize I needed to drive in. I checked out this Indian restaurant for their lunch buffet. The quality of the food was pretty consistent with most Indian buffets I've been to. It should be noted that Kalamazoo already has one Indian buffet that is of superior quality to most Indian buffets. There was a chicken in an orange sauce that was particularly good. I think it was Methi Chicken. The waiter brought freshly baked naan to our table and brought another basket when we ran out of that. The whole experience was a little "do it yourself." The silverware was in a tray near the buffet. If you didn't notice and grab it while you were up, you would have to make another trip. I'd like to give this a restaurant another chance, but not the buffet. For the same price, I would rather make the trip to Saffron. This place is great for a bite to satisfy your Indian flavor cravings. When my fiancé and I dine in, we frequently order the chicken tikka masala or butter chicken with garlic naan and veggie samosas. However, I docked a few stars for a couple of reasons we find to be consistent each time we visit. 1. The service is never stellar. The water is never refilled in a timely manner. You probably won't be checked on after your food arrives. And this will happen whether you are the only table in the place, or if there are 2 or 3 more. This may work well for some who don't like to see their server too much, but for me, I prefer to not always have to ask for things. 2. The music is always a touch too loud. In our latest experience, the pop channel was playing and it felt like we were in a nightclub! There was only one other table dining in when we arrived, so it's not like it was necessary to have music raised to blend in with all of the table conversation. 3. The quality of the meat in the chicken dishes is never really the best. It tastes good, definitely, but you know there's better quality meat out there. The flavor is really the only standout. That being said, I have not tried other meat dishes, so I can only speak to chicken. Saffron is another location in town where the meat matches the flavor quality, which may better suit your taste. While you do usually get more quantity meat I do think you pay for a little bit more than what you actually get. 4. You can pay just a few dollars more and have a totally different meal elsewhere. It's slightly overpriced, we think, for what you get. We are big eaters and love to dine around, but have noticed a slight shift in prices over the last few years that we don't believe truly matches the quality. All of that being said, we do enjoy our experience when we come, and generally like the food. We enjoy visiting, and like stopping by from time to time. It's definitely worth trying out! read more
