The ice treats come in all flavors but I wanted to try something I haven't tried before. I first got the rose pedal ice cream and it was creamy and tasty. It was more savory than sweet and it was just the way I like an ice treat. I then got the cheese ice cream and I thought it would be cheesy but it was savory and the cheese was not as creamy. You can taste the cheese bits in each bite. These ice cream are soft but the taste is solid and the ice cream doesn't get soupy even after a half hour of still enjoying it. We loved the mangonada mini that was extremely large and we could not finish it with two people. Mango was fresh and the mango ice cream was refreshing. While in the Mission, I felt like getting some ice cream, so I stopped in here. They have a lot of different flavors, some of which sound similar on the menu. Note that they charge an additional $1 for using credit and debit card to pay, regardless of amount, so bring cash if you want to save money. I opted to get the rose petals and burnt milk ice cream. I tried the guava, but wasn't a fan of it. They accidentally gave us one cup of rose petal and one of burnt milk but let us keep it - we intended to just get one cup with one scoop of each flavor. It helps if you know some Spanish. The rose is very syrupy and has strong rose flavor. The burnt milk tastes like creme brulee. Almost skipped out on this place after someone just answered "no English" then hung up so quickly and suddenly when I called to ask if they accept cards or cash only (ps- they now accept cards, but with a dollar fee)! Although there was only one person in front of us, we waited at least 5-10 minutes because the staff was busy hopping away. There were at least two others working there but only one actually working on the orders so I found that to be odd. The line was really long as we were leaving but it was still well worth the wait because it was so fresh. Both items cost only $8.50 for both so the prices are also reasonable. I had already had lunch but they also have elote for $3 on the cob or cheaper in the cup. The Mission is becoming less and less the mission, so thank God for places like Cinco de Mayo holding it down with delicious Mexican treats of all sorts in the heart of the Mission, right by 16th St BART. I saw raspados, bionicos, mangonadas, liquados, and jugos on their menu and of course had to go with a mangonada. They offer an array of sizes and I went with the mini, which was the perfect size right after a meal and was only $3.50. The chunks of mango, mango sorbet, and chamoy were everything I had hoped. Most mangonadas I've had used an icy mango blend instead of sorbet and I thought this was definitely better. Enjoyed my mangonada so much I was thrilled to learn there's another location in the Fruitvale, so I don't have to cross the bay for a Cinco de Mayo mangonada. The store also has lots of other Mexican candies and treats for purchase as well as homemade ice cream (stoked to come back soon and try the corn ice cream!). I am a big fan of shaved ice, and was so happy to discover this place just in time for the heat wave. I've been back three days in a row and have so far tried The following shaved ice (raspado) flavors: coconut (coco), guava (guayaba), and vanilla. I was impressed that all the syrups are made in-house from real/fresh ingredients (ie not artificial flavoring). Each flavor was so so good, and I'm definitely going to try all their shaved ice flavors. The vanilla wasn't something I would have thought to order,but I saw several people order it and it looked so good I thought I would try. It had a nice milk and cinnamon flavor along with vanilla, was delicious. The coconut and guava were equally good, so just get whatever flavor you're in the mood for, can't go wrong. Their other desserts all look great: the nieves, the elotes, the banana splits, agua frescas, etc. Will need to come back many times to work my way through the menu! This place is popular with the locals which is always a good sign. And the prices were extremely reasonable ($4 for a small shaved ice), especially compared to all the artisanal ice cream places nearby. Hubby and I went into this spot looking for Limón Agua Fresca. We've been in this place a number of times and gotten Mangonadas, Ice Cream and the like. This time we were craving Aguas and when we got it, it was a highlighter green. It wasn't the Agua de limón like we were used to, instead it was a melted raspa that of which was called Ague de Limón. How funny - the place is a mini-neighborhood market, selling produce and assorted dry and canned goods, yet all but one of their reviews are for the mangonadas (including mine). Then again, that just tells you what you're supposed to get here! Groceries? Plenty of alternatives you can buy them at. Mangonadas? Those are a little harder to come by! Now, if you aren't familiar with them, mangonadas are a delightful Mexican treat that's a cross between fruit drink and slushy dessert. Broken down, it's made up of mangoes (duh), chamoy sauce (which is made from pickled fruit), chili powder, and mango ice cream with a tamarind straw (there might also be lime juice too...). Together, we're talking layers and layers of flavors - spice, sweetness, acidity, and tartness. Since I was already pretty full, I ended up just sharing my friend's large, which was HUGE ($10.00). So huge that it probably made the decision not to go with a smaller size a bad one, though I don't think she cared since she LOVED it. Personally, I thought it was a little heavy on the chamoy sauce (pretty pungent), but I don't disagree with her, otherwise. In particular, I really liked how the fresh mangoes and mango ice cream balanced the spice/heat and how refreshing everything was as a whole. Definitely a mouthful of flavors! Now, if mangonadas aren't really your thing, Nieves Cinco de Mayo offers up alternatives if you're looking for a snack, such as a variety of "antojitos" and Mexican ice cream (so many flavors!). However, if you've yet to try one, definitely give the mangonada a go. More solid four stars than five for me, but it's clearly a favorite here! read more

Have you ever had a special hankering for a mangonada? Truth be told, my answer is a tentative "not really but...". So I was watching a marathon run of "Pati's Mexican Table" episodes on CreateTV, and sure enough she would inevitably find herself at a food stand in Mexico eating what looked to be colorful variations of mangonada like fruit gazpacho and bionico (fruit salad with crema and granola). She would take a bite and moan audibly to show her native zeal for these sweet creations. Those kinds of Mexican desserts just aren't all that common in these parts. That's why I was intrigued that this little produce market across from the 16th Street BART station actually served handmade mangonadas. Who knew? It's primarily a produce market though you hardly see people other than the staff walk beyond the ice cream counter at the front of the store. This is where you see the various cup sizes for the mangonada. Coincidentally, the only other mangonada I've tried is at a same-named spot near the Fruitvale BART station, although that one is truly just an ice cream stand. On the upside is the fact that the blend of sweet and spicy has been mastered here even though nothing appeared to be carefully measured. The palpable difference between the two locations, however, is the price. At a whopping $10, a Large is double here what a large is over there ($5). Welcome to San Francisco! Granted it's an awfully large Large with huge chunks of mango making up most of the cup with scoops of orange sherbet in the middle and on the top. I'm so glad we have a Nieves Cinco de Mayo in SF- especially with the number of sweltering hot days we have been having. I went here just 3 days after visiting their main Oakland branch- that's how much I love the frozen treats. This time I got the chamoyada- the fancier, fruit laden cousin of the raspado (which is a snow cone like thing with spicy tangy and sweet flavors). The medium chamoyada (8$) was big enough to share between two but you can definitely finish it alone if you wanted to since so much of it is fruits (melons, mango, pineapple and cucumber, possibly papaya). It's very refreshing- with syrupy crushed ice in between the fruit, a stick of the sweet and spicy tajin (that you usually see in a mangonada), seasoned with lime and Chili. You choose the flavors of the base (I went with mango and tamarind), and I loved mine. While the chamoyada was great, I'm craving for a raspado again and and will probably order that a few more times before trying anything else. At 4$ for a medium, it was a pretty great deal. I've been on a big mangonada kick lately! I've been exclusively seeking them out as the weather has gotten warmer...at least by SF standards! I hate to give a small, local market a less than average review, but I was very unhappy with my mangonada. The mango was cut into large pieces and it was really hard and unripe. There was very little slush/ice cream and they were heavy handed with the chamoy, to the point where it was overpowering. The tamarindo stick was also pasty instead of firm and chewy like a fruit roll up. And on top of that, the medium, which is the average size offered at most places, was $7.50. Definitely the most I've paid anywhere. Maybe I went on an off day...but I was pretty disappointed. Sweet and ripe mangoes are one of the main draws of a mangonada...and if they're not ripe, they shouldn't be served! read more

I am a weekly customer here especially since I work wednesdays and fridays right outside for a non profit community organization. Today I asked to use the restroom, as I am a repeat customer, and was harrassed by the employee( a middle aged hispanic male) that told me I could only use the restroom this one time. 7 minutes later, if that, he came banging on the door and jiggling the knob yelling at me to get out. I Quickly got off the toilet and washed my hand exited the bathroom. As I was walking out I was confronted with the employee and he told me to get out and never come back again and that I was never allowed to use the restroom that I had taken too long and there was a family waiting to use the restroom. I proceeded to let him know that I am a weekly customer and that I work right outside at the non-profit giving back to the community every week twice a week, he ignored everything I was saying and overtaked to me yelling at me that he didn't care that I needed to get out now With no explanation. I asked him why and what is going on he refused to let me know and I proceeded to let him know it is not my fault if my stomach is sick. He cared nothing of what I was sayi'm and I try to get his manager but he refused and said that he was the owner and would not give me his name and then told the other employee to ignore me and not tell me his name either In Spanish. He did not know that I speak Spanish fluently and that I am Mexican in Spanish. I am light-skinned and pass as a white female, the so-called family that needed to use the restroom and who were so-called waiting for so long were Hispanic and obviously so which made me feel like it was a race issue. I've never had this problem with any other of their employees before and don't understand where the anger and rage came from when I was very cordial and respectful. I've never had this kind of experience at this particular place or any for that matter. I will be contacting the true owner and manager about this horrific experience. I'm appalled and disgusted to be treated in such a disrespectful way with no logical explanation at all. read more

My favorite type is the tamarind, but I've also liked the lime, mango, and pineapple flavors as well.
