Just brutal service, on Father's Day no less! We arrived for brunch around noon and the place was relatively busy but our family of four saddled up to the bar in the front. That was the highlight of the experience. After 40 minutes, my wife's smoked salmon egg dish was brought out all by itself and nothing else came for 15 minutes (we clocked it). Then my son and my burgers arrived, both double burgers instead of the singles we ordered. Then my other kid's meal showed up. Then my wife's hash browns show up, 20 minutes after her egg dish. Everything delivered piece meal. Caramel roll never showed up and we had to have bartender remove it from the tab. Never a single apology for the service. And not a single "Happy Father's Day, guy!" well wish! The food is good but there is simply no excuse for the indifference of the entire staff. Just brutal. read more

I have sooo many positive things to say about this place & 1 fairly strong negative comment, so I'll begin with the negative - the cooks in their open kitchen (some with longer hair & several with facial hair) aren't wearing hair nets or hats...I couldn't help but notice. & now for all the positives! We got a babysitter in order to go out for a birthday dinner for my husband. We live about 5 minutes away & had been wanting to try this spot since it opened. Even though it was Saturday night & a party of 3 ahead of us was told the wait was 10 minutes or so we were seated immediately at a table for 2 by the open kitchen. Our server appeared promptly & gave some great recommendations & descriptions of their beers on tap. They have some unique options! I also noticed they have a cold coffee on tap - I'll keep that in mind when I return to try their brunch menu. Based on all the previous reviewers we ordered the fried chicken waffle & the French dip sandwich. Bear in mind that the waffle on the chicken & waffle plate IS AN EGGO waffle - however the dish is incredibly delicious. Also bear in mind that the French dip sandwich is NINETEEN DOLLARS - however it was honestly worth it. Definitely the best French dip either of us have ever tasted by a long shot. We got a couple pieces of pie for dessert (the apple with cheddar crust was pretty awesome) & then walked next door to 5 Watt for some coffee. In the end we made it home in less than an hour, we almost felt silly for having booked babysitting for such a short night out, but the experience was fantastic & we will definitely return to nighthawks. ...I just hope they follow the health code & get their kitchen staff into some hairnets/hats. read more

We tried out Nighthawks on Sunday for brunch. I thought they had been open a few weeks, but then we discovered Sunday was their first brunch service! I was pretty impressed for a maiden voyage brunch. There were 4 of us and we all loved what we ordered... pancakes, cheeseburger, wild mushroom omelet and eggs/hasbrowns and toast. Loved the trendy but relaxed environment and the staff was all very friendly and seemed to be working well as a team (assisting each other with cleaning plates etc). I could have given my review 5 stars, but I have two critiques that really bugged me: 1. One of our party ordered a side of bacon. The order came and it was 1 strip of bacon. Who eats one strip of bacon?! That is almost a mean trick. Not to mention that it was $5. $5 for 1 strip of bacon. Another in our party got a side of sausage and it was 3 nice sized sausage patties. So we actually brought it up to our waitress and she confirmed it was correct...but there is a "full size" side of bacon you could order and that was $8. I have no idea if that is 2 strips or 3 strips or what...but $8 for even 3 strips of bacon is just absurd. You should get 3 strips of bacon for $5. 2. They indicate they serve things "diner style", which means they bring out the plates when they are ready. That kind of annoys me because 1 person at the table had food and no one else did...so then you sit there awkwardly waiting for the rest of the food to arrive. I get it - it either sits up on the prep counter under a heat lamp or they just bring it out. But, my dad ordered eggs, hashbrowns and an order of bacon. The hashrowns came out on their own plate...then he waited about 4 minutes...and then another plate came out with a single strip of bacon...and then about 3 minutes later a third plate came out with eggs on it. Clearly that should have all been grouped on it's own plate and brought out at one time. I chalk this up to a kink that needs to be worked out. Besides these two complaints - The food was fabulous, ambiance was great and staff was friendly. I look forward to trying it again after some of the new dust settles! read more

Since this new restaurant opened in the neighborhood, I've been excited to give it a try. I did so last night with my mom. I was underwhelmed. The interior space is fine but nothing special. I don't recommend sitting at the 2-top tables if you can help it. You'll likely get nudged or bumped by someone walking by. The wine list is limited. At a restaurant in this price range, I should be able to get a glass of some sort of white wine for under $9. (pro tip, most people don't consider Rose white wine) My mom and I talked to the waitress about sharing the meatloaf special and the waitress really discouraged this. When we got our entrees (both having ordered the meatloaf) we were each presented with a piece of meatloaf that was easily three servings (the piece was a 2" thick 4" square). It's the type of presentation I would expect at the Cheesecake Factory. And it was ok, but nothing special. The potatoes and gravy were of a similar taste and consistency to what I recall being served with my elementary school hot lunch. I don't understand why the waitress discouraged us from sharing. I can't shake the feeling that her desire was to maximize revenue, which is unfortunate since I ate about 1/3 of my meal and my mom finished even less of hers. It was also a bit frustrating to have the music turned up, abruptly half way through our meal, to a volume that basically precluded us from continuing our conversation without having to shout at one another. I had high hopes for another great neighborhood place but based on this experience, I won't bother coming back. read more

I really wanted to like this place since it's so close to me and I tend to eat out a lot. Every time I come here, my food takes forever to come out. I was trying to impress my guest from out of town with the new spot in my neighborhood but we waited over 45 minutes for breakfast. For eggs. We sat there while customers who came in after us had food in from of them. No one came by to apologize or even refill our coffee. And when the food finally came out it was ok but nothing special. Was very disappointed at first when they didn't have the special available for Friday nights which was the Fish & Chips. It is safe to say they made up for it by having the best food I've had in a while. The nighthawks dog was one of the best hot dogs I have ever had. Spicy cauliflower was incredible as well. Our group lunch at Nighthawks was terrific, we had a couple of Frito pies, Pastrami sandwich, a Chicken sandwich, a soup and sandwich special and one other item I can't remember. There were no complaints, in fact everyone agreed the food was good when I inquired. What we especially enjoyed was the service and attitude of the crew working there this past Wednesday afternoon. They were quite helpful getting our party settled in, assisting us with a wheelchair in the front door and the stashing of some other mobility devices. In a sentence - excellent food, extremely poor service. We arrived at 4pm and practically nobody was there and all the booths were empty, they said we couldn't have a booth because they were for parties of 3 or more. I ordered the cobb salad, when I got it it looked more like a wedge salad. Stuff wasn't chopped up, it didn't look very appetizing to me. I politely asked the waiter if I could send the salad back and get something else instead. The waiter said yes took my order and left, but he left the salad in front of me. From that point on he was pretty much ignoring us. He came over again later to bring the gorgonzola/carmelized onion/balsamic fry bowl I ordered instead, and I asked him to please take the salad away but he just looked at me and walked away. I don't understand why he had to make such a big deal about it. At the end the cobb salad was still on the bill in addition to what I ordered to replace the salad. They charged us for half a cobb salad. Why didn't the waiter tell me when I sent it back that they were still going to charge me for part of it? So weird. The entire staff seemed to know what was up. We were getting looks from cooks and other servers. We were afraid to order dessert because we were afraid he would spit in it and we were also concerned someone was going to spit in the replacement food I ordered. When we got the bill I told the waiter I was disappointed that they charged us the the salad. He said he was busy and would have to come back to discuss. Nobody came. After sitting for several minutes I gave up and just left cash and left. My fries were incredible, the Nighthawk's dog was so delicious and our banana cream pie was so excellent it didn't even matter that the crust was burned. Really good food. Nighttime pancakes and cocktails are two things I think should go together all the time. Friday night visit with a large group, which was accommodated really well considering no reservations. I ordered the peanut butter and chocolate chip pancakes because I'm me and I have a raging peanut butter addiction. Husband and I split a half order of bacon which was weird. The pieces were comically huge and fat, but it didn't taste like bacon. It wasn't crispy and really tasted like fatty meat more than anything. For $6 it's a definite miss. Overall, folks seemed to enjoy their food. I was surprised the vegetarian hot dog was in fact a carrot. I'm not sure if that's genius or cheap. read more

I liked the king field spice better than the buffalo sauce one. The fries are superb. Everything I tried on my friends plates was equally top notch. Came in for dinner after work last month as I've wanted to try this place for a while. We tried to go to brunch last year but they were closed - they have late hours not conducive to early risers like myself - and we ended up at Blackbird (mistake). It was nice to finally try! The inside is really nice as they've kept the integrity and look of the original historic brick building they're housed in. It has plenty of natural light and the seating wraps around the bar so don't be deterred if it looks packed on first glance. Our waitress was super friendly (overly? a bit handsy) and served us drinks right away. However, after we got our food, she seemed to disappear and we were kind of in the corner out of eyesight and there was a lot of time we were waiting for her to reappear. I got a cheeseburger with an egg and bacon and fries. My side of ranch (I can't eat fries without it) was way too heavy on the dill - which shouldn't be in ranch anyway!? - so both fries and ranch went to the room mate. The burger was very delicious though so no complaints there. My room mate's French Dip was also amazing with the highlight being the shallot jam. They had a decent beer selection, too, though I went with an Arnold Palmer. Next time I'll save room for dessert. read more

Stay away if you are gluten free!! My husband ordered a burger, no bun and coleslaw and was assured by the server (who also said she was gluten free) that it would be fine. He was very sick within a couple of hours and spent most of the night in the bathroom, which happens when he ingests gluten. Was on vacation when my friend suggested this place for breakfast. Walking in its a nice spot everyone is very friendly and you can tell they genuinely enjoy their jobs. I ordered the English muffins with the cream cheese spread topped with raw salmon and chives. Wow what an amazing dish, this isn't something I'd normally order but it was extremely flavorful and refreshing for a breakfast dish. I also had a Pineapple Shandy which was excellent (a bit much on the blood orange but nothing crazy) I would highly recommend this to anyone in the area looking for a good spot with great food! read more

I have never, ever, had a pastrami sandwich like this before! The best around! Also, before 6 they have a great special, beer and a huge hot dog for $10, which is such a great deal. The hot dog is not just a plain hot dog either, it's served on a fresh, gourmet bun with lots of interesting and tasty toppings. The french dip was great too, cannot go wrong with that either. Fries were fresh cut and my favorite style with a great mayo dipping sauce. We took dessert to go and the banana cream pie and chocolate pie were awesome as well, great presentation. This place has it figured out! Great food, fast, pleasant service and overall a great experience. We will recommend and be back for sure as I need to try the chicken legs and the pancakes next time! We survived. My friend and I went here because of all the great reviews, and we were very disappointed and a little sick. We knew it was not health food, but for an upscale diner, this place should either be a lot cheaper or a lot better. I had the french onion soup, which was just a salt fest. Could not finish it. Yes, french onion soup can be salty, but that should not be its one and only quality. We split the pastrami sandwich with fries. Even splitting the sandwich was dangerous to the gut and the fries were mediocre at best. Our server was very nice, and we might come back for dessert some day, but never ever again for the "food." read more

They also have the sweetest waitress ever, I wish I could remember her name, she's an older woman who is the best waitress I've ever had. We love the Eggs Bennie, Burger, & Caramel Rolls. Hit or miss. We've been to Nighthawks three times. The buffalo cauliflower has been great each time. On 5/19 everything was way overly cooked, it seemed like whoever was running the fryer didn't know what they were doing. Fries tasted dry and reheated (they were great on a previous trip) and our chicken sandwiches were black. The chicken was chewy and way overdone. We'll probably come back someday, but they're not getting many more chances. read more

We've been here a few times. First time I had the Beet Salad - it was delicious. We tried it again last night. We asked for a booth at 6:30pm and were told that the booths are saved for larger parties than 2, ok but your tables for 2 are so small you can barely fit at them. Bartenders need to pay attention.... when your wine glass is empty you might want to offer another drink and not wait for the customer to ask. Keep your hands out of your pockets and pay attention to customers. I had the hamburger- I think it was like 4oz. of meat and came with a teenie cup of not-so-great potato salad. Food selection is slim. Not sure we will be back. :( I really wanted to like this place. read more

I am a fan of Nighthawks - I live near by and have brought many friends for lunch and brunch. I woke up this morning thinking of their cranberry and ginger pancakes - got there - sat alone at the bar by the kitchen. I looked at the pancake short stack menu and my choice had gone off the menu. I ordered the blueberry lemon and chatted with the chefs. I mentioned that i was looking forward to the cranberry ginger cakes, and they said - no problem - we have cranberries and we have ginger. Hats off the the great customer service - the chefs and the staff - they went above and beyond for my brunch today... I will be back - next time I will stick to the menu... read more

So disappointed that Nighthawks discontinued their happy hour specials and guacamole and chips. It was so nice to have a place in the neighborhood to sit down and have an inexpensive beer and appetizer. We had told many people that we really enjoyed going there. Yesterday it cost $35 for 4 beers and an order of fries. We communicated our frustration with the manager. He was dismissive and rude to us. I guess I will be telling everyone not to go there. I tried this placed out for brunch today and boy was I impressed . Great staff , great ambience and last but not at all the least the food was great . I tried the breakfast sandwich and a bit of the poutine. Amazing ! There are so many great items on the brunch menu that I have to come back again several times to try them all out. That always is a great sign and itself should tell you that the place it definitely worth checking out. The place opened less than a year ago and definitely is a great addition to the neighborhood with Blackbird and Five Watt coffee adjacent to it. Also they let you go get your favorite Java from Five Watt that you can bring in while you dine in there . read more
