This is some of the freshest sushi I have ever had in this area! Food: 5/5 I could not highlight more how fresh the fish tastes. The sushi in this area is mostly average, but this is comparable to the fresh servings I've had in Maui. Please go try the sushi. We also got the seafood pancake, which was not greasy and delicious, but noticed there wasn't as much seafood as I have seen in other seafood pancakes, more chives (which was still yummy). This is a great local restaurant for fusion Japanese food. Conveniently located in the old town Ellicott city district, next to the Mochi donuts shop. Owned by Korean, so you can get the best of both Korean and Japanese food here. We have been coming here for the past several years, never had bad experience. The seafood pancake is the best in EC though, very crunchy , with fresh shrimp and calamari. The service is pretty good given we were the only customers. 6.2.23 I was in the mood for Asian cuisine tonight for dinner and don't eat Japanese very often so decided to come here to try their bento box. I went for the Chicken Teriyaki which came with rice, California rolls, gyoza, and shrimp/veggie tempura. The apps included miso soup and a sesame house salad. Loved the sesame dressing. It is the best dressing I have had at any Japanese restaurant. Onto my bento box. Of the veggie tempura my favorite was the sweet potato. The shrimp tempura was delish too. Loved the crunchiness. The tempura sauce and soy sauce for the gyoza were delish too. On the sweeter side which I like. The teriyaki sauce for the chicken was so yummy I dipped my jasmine rice in it. I believe a good sauce or marinade is key to making everything taste better. The chicken was broiled and generally I prefer it to be roasted or grilled. It was on the softer side and I prefer the texture to be crisp. I normally don't like California rolls, but thought I would be adventurous and try it again. Big mistake, I choked on the wasabi. I don't do spicy. My eyes started watering and I had to gulp water. So much for trying to be adventurous. The restaurant is small. There are counter seats where they make sushi and tables on each end of the restaurant. They are located in Frederick Crossing. They have a lunch menu on weekdays from 11:30-3pm. Friendly and attentive staff, and the food was delicious! We ordered seafood pancake, which is Korean, and Platter A. The pancake was crunchy outside and seasoned perfectly inside. My friend who has probably eaten at every restaurant in the area said this place has the best seafood pancakes. Platter A came with California rolls, spicy rolls, salmon and red tuna sushi, white tuna sushi, those sushi with eggs on top, another with shrimp and yet another with eel. I probably forgot a couple because I didn't know what fish it was. It was a lot, and super delicious! I also took home fish stew, and my husband and I gobbled it up to the last drop. Not fishy and oily like other places. Very refreshing soup, and the fish tasted fresh, not from frozen. Definitely a place to return again and again. It was close to Rita's, too. Recently got takeout from here because the wife was craving sushi. Yelp recommended this place for good sushi and they were right! Got some shumai, my wife's favorite, and it was really pleasant. I sometimes find shumai to be too wet from the steaming but this was solid. The vegetable tempura was good; I just wish I had more sauce. We opted for Dinner Box A, which allowed us a try a few things. Most was good, especially the gyoza. The chicken teriyaki was a bit disappointing - the chicken seemed overcooked and the sauce thin. But we came here for sushi and it was all great. Oshinko (pickled radish) can be hit or miss, but this was a hit. The seafood rice is literally my favorite thing to get. It's a light refreshing meal that hits perfectly in the summer and the warmer days. The fish is fresher than the other spots I tried, a little heavy on the lettuce but it's probably because they want to be stingy on giving more seafood. Please keep in mind it's raw fish. I came to Niko Restuarant with my family, and we were greeted and felt very welcomed by Howard, the sushi chef/owner. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very peaceful with some decorations, and there is music softly playing in the background. We were seated promptly, and the menu is very straight forward with two sides. There is a separate a la carte menu that you need to ask for that lists all the various special rolls and nigiri pieces. The prices are very reasonable for the sushi, and they also serve hot food for those who don't eat sushi. The sushi taste very fresh, and I would highly recommend the Chirashi Sushi because it contains a good amount of variety with enough fish to serve one person. VERY clean restaurant and a tentative friendly staff. The sushi was extra fresh and really really good. The avocado was just right the roe was great and the crab was fresh. Amazing sushi!! I came here on a Friday afternoon for my graduation. It's kind of hard to find because Apple maps doesn't tell you where to enter the shopping center and you end up driving right by it. In addition, there's no entrance where Apple maps takes you, so you have to turn around - but this is apple's fault, not Niko's. There were 9 of us so we ordered Platter C. Platter C is listed to feed 4-5 people, but family doesn't eat too much so it ended up feeding all 9 of us. We started with miso soup and salad; both were good. Then they brought out the shrimp and vegetable tempura, which was also very good. THEN they brought out this massive boat full of sushi - my dream come true. The boat has nigiri, sashimi, and sushi. Really great value with their Bento Box lunch which as you can see from the pictures includes six pieces of sashi, a large piece of teriyaki salmon, a salmon roll and a small stack of tempura. Plus a salad and a bowl of miso. If you order a meal, you also get a salad. Ton Katsu ($16): Three thin breaded, fried pork cutlets. Not too greasy, still crispy and hot, served with broccoli and cabbage slaw with a creamy dressing and rice at the side. One of the best ton katsu you'll find at sushi joints in the area. Bento Box C ($20): Get this option if you have a beast appetite. There are three bento boxes: all include cooked teriyaki meat or fish, rice, sushi roll, gyoza, and tempura. Box C comes with teriyaki salmon and nigiri. Everything was good! Sushi: Prices are low, averaging $5 for a regular roll and $12 for a specialty roll. Rolls come with 6 pieces, though the specialty rolls are wider and more substantial. The raw fish had great texture: tender with the right amount of give when you bite into it. The servers were very kind and the food came out very quickly. My family ordered the largest sushi boat and I got the KatsuDon. We ordered tempura on the side for the family to share. My family all seemed very pleased with the quality of the sushi. I can't say that I've had a KatsuDon before, but I found it to be very heavy and a bit greasy. I needed wasabi in order to finish the dish. However, with the addition of the wasabi the dish was very good. This place is located in a strip mall and the parking is relatively easy so definitely a plus for this place. The restaurant itself is a decent size and gets pretty busy for dinner so I'd suggest playing it safe and making reservations. I am always excited to try new restaurants, especially sushi, but I also get anxious. You see, I've noticed sushi restaurants fall into 2 main categories: heavy use of rice to the point it overpowers the flavors of the roll or light use of rice to compliment and accentuate the flavors of the roll. Now the former may sound negative but I've come across people who appreciate a nice rice base for their sushi. I, on the other hand, prefer the light use of rice approach. So, I was thrilled to find Niko doesn't overpower their sushi with rice! Sorry to my rice base-preferred brothers and sisters. Among the numerous rolls my wife and I tried, the Ginza Roll, Green Monster Roll and Rock & Roll all stood out and I recommend them for anyone to try when coming here for the first time. The one dig I couldn't get over is when we were done eating, several times, the waitresses walked by and did not acknowledge us, despite our attempts to signal to them we were ready for the check. I've been searching for good sashimi all through out the DMV and i finally found it all the way out in Ellicott city. I wish this place were closer to DC just for my own selfish pleasure. Atmosphere is pretty casual, looks like a regular korean restaurant with simple tables and chairs. No extravagant decorations. When we went for lunch it was full of families with young children. The tables are close together in a quiet setting so you can hear everything. Service: we went during the day so it wasnt that busy. Service was fast. They gave a couple of free appetizers but not the whole spread like they usually do in korean restaurants. In their defense it's sashimi not traditional korean food with side dishes. I asked for a focus on salmon (my fav) and they gave us double the amount! Food: ugh soooo good. They give you nice pieces like sea urchin. The quality is great everything tastes fresh. Seriously why can't I find this in DC? Price: pretty pricey but worth the treat. We got the deluxe sashimi set which was $68. We didn't even come close to finishing it. This place used to be a Korean restaurant called Hansung, but the owners decided to do a total renovation transformation of this venue and swap it into a full Japanese restaurant. The owners are the same! Some servers have gone and been replaced. But the warm & friendly vibe still lives on. I have only ever gone for lunch, and they have some good lunch specials that are great if you are in the area. I hope Niko does well in the future and finds its place in the Ellicott City neighborhood as a delicious, consistent, and affordable local sushi option! PS: The restaurant is very small with limited seating. I don't think it can seat more than....35 people, approximately? My last few meals here as been very disappointing. The sushi/sashimi portions have shrunk considerably in size. Prices have gone up. This Friday while dining in, my waiter completely forgot my meal while my entire party had already received their dishes. When we reminded them, there was some confusion amongst the waiters and they came to tell me that they forgot my order and it would take them another 20 mins to prepare my dish. The original waiter that took my order was no where to be seen. Since the members in my party were almost done with their dishes, I declined. Extremely disappointed that they did not even try to make amends for their blatant error. There appears to be a growing number of alternative places with similar cuisine. Wow! We had the most amazing meal at Niko Restaurant tonight! We had been to Niko years ago when they were at Normandy Shopping Center and they have improved 10x!!! They were good before, but WOW they have raised the bar! My son said, "Best dinner I've had in a good while. That was great!" We had a feast and everything we had was 1st Class! The sushi is on par with the best we've had, and we've had great sushi all over the country. The owner Howard was so gracious and made us feel like VIPs.
