My family loves this place. We most often order sushi (maki), specifically the salmon-avacodo/alaska and spicy-tuna rolls. We almost always get take out. Sandy, the lady who works at the front is very friendly. She recognizes us now when we call and asks how things are going. In our experience, the food is always very good and the price is reasonable for the area and time. I will warn that the wait for picking up the food has been long at times in the past and has been longer than we were told. This has been frustrating when it happened, but now I usually come a little later than she says, and I don't remember waiting in years. I'm not a sushi connoisseur or snob, but in my opinion the salmon avacado roll is essentially the same as other sushi restaurants in the area and they have one of my favorite spicy tuna rolls. (We have ordered other rolls in the past although I don't remember them well. We really decided these other two are our favorites at all sushi places.) Other things we have ordered include moo shu, lo mein, hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, fried rice, seaweed salad, various fried chicken dishes, and others. I ordered wonton soup chicken egg foo young and chicken fried rice. The wonton soup broth was flavorless the noodle was mushy with .000001 oz canter I threw it away. The chicken tasted like day old or frozen from last year not fresh. When I called to complain about my order they offered me nothing as i expected. I let them know I am not interested in doing business with them anymore. I did frequent this same restaurant 20 years ago the quality have diminished to the magnitude that I have to delete their number from my phone. Wonton soup broth had no flavor at all nor color and wontons were very loose wonton wrappers either no meat in them. Egg rolls were very small with flavorless filling. Located just off Cedar Lane west of Columbia, the restaurant looked authentic and well decorated, but it was empty on a weekend night. We recently visited this overlooked gem of a restaurant. The dishes we had (both regular and vegetarian) were well spiced but not overly hot. While called China Chef, the restaurant offers many non-Chinese items, such as Pad Thai, Sushi and Sashimi. And it is quite fresh: while we were there the restaurant was preparing fresh string beans to be used in the dishes. The restaurant itself is well appointed with Asian motifs. Amazingly during the last hour open on Christmas, they squeezed in an order for Peking Duck. After we tried to get from several other places, everyone was sold out, or a 2 hour wait. (I know, I know, should've planned ahead ) The folks at Peking Chef had our order promptly ready in 35 minutes! And let's not forget to mention how delicious it was! Been living in Columbia for 23 years but have never tried this Chinese restaurant until these past few weeks. May be because it hides behind Giant grocery and I hardly shop in that Giant. But from now on I will buy from this restaurant when I need my Chinese. Compared to all other carry outs around Columbia I will start buying from here. If you wonder why, here is my answer: Quality!! Quality!! Quality!!! when I buy General Tso I expect chicken meat! This restaurant gave me BIG CHUNK Of chicken meats!!! Not just tiny meat covered with LOTS of batter like MOST carry outs in the US!! This establishment gives MEATS! just like a real restaurant. Same with my Moo Goo Gai Pan and Combination Lo Mien. A LOTS OF Chunk of BIG chicken slices in my Moo Goo Gai Pan. Big and very decent slices of Beefs, Porks, Chickens and not just 4 tiny Shrimps. I'm talking about Lunch here. Very decent! This place has reasonable (reasonable, not cheap) lunch deals and a really convenient location, right next to Giant supermarket. I was excited to try it out. But I would not order from here again. The food was just not delicious. I took one taste of the soup and that was enough for me. The broth had a weird taste and the wonton was large with barely any filling: I couldn't eat it. The chicken with mixed vegetables was ok, not terrible. But it wasn't yummy. I think it was the taste of the sauce that was off for me. I'm also used to Chinese food having much more vegetables in it, in relation to variety and quantity. I only ate half of my dish because I didn't enjoy it and threw the rest out. Tried this place today after seeing the review for the egg foo young. Well let me say he doesn't know egg foo young!! It was bland needed seasoning and was lacking a lot! I have lived in Columbia, MD for over 15 years. I've seen my favorite restaurants come and go. Sadly, I think that I am done with Peking Chef. About three years ago I found hair in my food I ordered for take out. I threw it away but I did not complain because at the time, this was a place I loved to frequent, although I stopped going. Fast forward five to seven years later. Today, I took a chance. I was craving Seafood Combination. I ordered Seafood Combination at Peking Chef which was a mistake. Seafood Combination is squid, carrots, broccoli, shrimp,fake crab meat and other veggies over rice. I got four shrimp, two scallops, lots of veggies and NO squid (my favorite for texture). While the flavor of the sauce was good, I was so disappointed because the top layer had little seafood but the second layer was protein less. Nothing at all but all veggies. Not to mention that the scallops were not washed properly. My teeth are still gritty from the sand in the scallops, I couldn't eat the one I added to my plate. It was simply gross and a true disappointment. I could have made it better than what they gave me. It was such a disappointment to my palate and expectations. I will not be going back to Peking Chef anytime soon. I have two favorite Chinese foods, Shrimp Egg Foo Young and Combination Seafood. I cannot eat either at this establishment due to my dissatisfaction. I truly wish they would pay more attention to how they serve because while the customer service is excellent, the food is lacking. read more

My family has enjoyed peking chef for special dinners such as mothers/Father's Day, birthdays, etc for years. We are hugely disappointed that they have not reopened their dining room since the covid shut down two years ago. This food is wonderful but it was the calm atmosphere of the restaurant, the excellent service, and the overall pleasant dining experience that made us choose them. Meals are a bit pricey and we live a bit too far to justify take out. Finally, a good Chinese restaurant that delivers to Laurel! The restaurants that are closer to us are not good at all. We received the menu for this restaurant in Columbia and decided to give it a try. We ordered the egg rolls, edamame, egg drop soup, combination fried rice, and chicken broccoli. The delivery took an hour, but to be fair, the weather is nasty today and we are in a different city. The driver was very nice. The order arrived complete, no errors. Food was delicious. My chicken could have used more seasoning, but it was still good. Those egg rolls were yummy and not greasy. Edamame was nice too, not too salty. I liked the soup and my husband liked his fried rice. We have been going to Peking Chef since LONG before their remodel. The food is inexpensive, and consistently good. This is one of the few area Chinese restaurants where we can find cheese-filled wontons, and will often go to Peking Chef just for them, rather than other, often closer options. Unlike some other area Chinese restaurants, Peking Chef's food is not overly oily or "heavy". We will continue to eat here for years to come. read more

On a saturday with 2 tables, our party stayed just about ten minutes longer to carry on a conversation. The hostess and someone behind the counter start cursing at us in Chinese merely feet away, thinking we didn't pay attention or understand them. Very disrespectful. We weren't holding up any service (again, because they were only able to fill two tables on a Saturday), nor did we call any additional service after we hand in the check. "Meh" really does sum it up well. If strong flavors and distinctive character are important to you, this is not the place. If you like all your dishes to taste basically the same regardless of their ingredients, then by all means, give it a shot. The beef lo mein was utterly bland. It wasn't "bad" because that would imply some kind of...well, taste. But it was like eating when you have a cold--you can feel it in your mouth, but there's nothing to it. The orange beef was the same, although there was a hint of citrus to the blandness. The tuna and salmon sashimi, while fresh, had almost no flavor whatsoever. It was almost spooky how devoid of taste it was. It reminded me of the fish I buy when I roll my own sushi. I expect non-flash-frozen and truly fresh fish in my restaurant sushi. A good piece of salmon should be buttery and smooth, not just non-lethal. The dragon roll was the same. The rice was tasteless and even the smoked eel was mild (and I use "mild" only because I can't think of another synonym for "tasteless"). Since China Chefs closed my husband and I have been trying out the other local Chinese places in hopes of finding a suitable replacement and I think we've found it! We tried out the Shrimp Rolls, Wonton Soup, Dumplings, and the Chicken and Broccoli. I was expecting the Chicken and Broccoli to be a little bit spicier but even without it was still great. Extremely satisfied with the food (delicious) and the delivery (on time, polite). The one down side to the meal was that there wasn't any rice with the order? I'm not sure if I misread the menu and should have ordered it separately or if they forgot to include it. It's only a 3 star rating, but that that's entirely appropriate for a good family run restaurant. Just finished dinner with some friends and our kids- party of 12 all together. The dining room is open and gets a little noisy with the hard floors and 8 kids, but not in a bad way. We had cashew chicken, crispy beef, chicken lo mein, assorted steamed dumplings, and some spicy tuna rolls. Perhaps we have pedestrian suburbanite tastes, but we enjoyed our meals, particularly the sushi. There were no obvious quality gaffes, which is also consistent with our takeout experiences (unlike Hunan Manor, which is better known but always leaves me a little non-plussed). Service was a little erratic, but it looked like our server was a teenage family member, so our expectations weren't very high. Oh, and we fed 12 adults and kids for 75 bucks before tip. That is a pretty good value, especially in this zip code. Came to Peking Chef during lunch time and it was a complete Ghost Town. There was no one there, which I guess was good because we had the whole place to ourselves. I ordered the Spicy Salmon roll and the Combination Lo Mein lunch special. I was hoping the Sushi would come out before my meal as I wanted to eat it as an appetizer. Most places I go to, if you get Sushi and a meal, the sushi comes out first. However, this did not happen. So, I was left to play with the Chinese Year mat on the table while everyone else enjoyed their appetizer, Lol. With the Combination Lo Mein lunch special, you don't get rice, and I could see why. When the plate was sat in front of me, it was loaded with Lo Mein. I mean shoot, I'm not complaining, I love Lo Mein, but it was more of a dinner portion then a lunch portion. So, if your really hungry at lunch time, get the Combination Lo Mein. Needless to say, I left with a container full of leftovers. As I started eating my Lo Mein, is when my sushi came out. I mean, it is what it is, and I just ate them both together. The Combination Lo Mein was delicious. There was plenty of meat ( shrimp, beef, and chicken), and it was really flavorful.
