For me, that's a big downside. I usually use a packet of Splenda in my coffee, so I actually had to go out to my car and grab one before I could drink it. That really bugged me. What kind of coffee shop doesn't offer at least a few sugar options? That said, the black coffee was actually really good. I was happy with the flavor and would definitely order it again. I love this place so much, I wished it was closer to home. But honestly, I do not mind making the drive to come here, because it's so worth it. I stopped by recently on my way up to Big Bear. The shop was very busy and had a line nearly out the door. The line moved relatively fast. The inside is more on the medium size with chairs and tables for guests. Customer service was friendly and he provided me some recommendations on drinks to try. They had a nice menu with different lattes, matchas, food, and teas. I tried the Con Amor Latte half sweet with oat milk. The drink was ready within 5 minutes after ordering. My go-to study spot and caffeine pick-me-up in San Bernardino! They present as a trendy, contemporary-coffee shop, but that doesn't sacrifice their personality. They seem to be very community-orientated and staff have been friendly to me. They also have flyers posted of social events in and around the area. Some additional perks include a free water station, several charging outlets, and a section for their stylish merch. I once tried the chicken pesto sandwich, which comes with ciabatta bread, chicken, cheese, avocado, pesto, tomato, greens--as well as a side of potato chips. It was a two-mealer for me and didn't feel super cohesive in flavor for some reason. The matcha/chocolate cookie I tried was okay and quite sweet. As for the drinks, they almost never miss! The double matcha (Kyoto-Bliss) may sometimes be a bit watery for my palate, but if you wait until the cream top settles it feels more full bodied. The San-Banana matcha is popular, but can sometimes have a watered down banana/matcha flavor. I enjoy the coffee and have tried a range of their speciality drinks, such as the Sweetheart or Hermosa, which are on the sweeter end. I also like their Americano, which is simple and not very acidic. I've yet to try more from their rotating seasonal menus and will be back for more! :) read more

I am a matcha lover. We mostly gave up trying to find matcha treats in the Inland Empire because most authentic Asian goods are found in Orange or Chino. This garnered a heated discussion with my colleague that Nine Eight Five Coffee can be a rival. I heard of Nine Eight Five but never been. Honestly, knowing that it is in the ghetto San Bernardino veered me away. My wife, however, got a Kyoto matcha from there and recommended we go. Happy wife = happy life. Driving there, my thoughts were: "yup, we're in the ghetto" when we saw three homeless in the nearby 7-11. There was a small red sign reading "985 Coffee" which we almost missed. We were warmly greeted by the barista when we walked in. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was a clean interior with a few seats (possibly additional seating when it gets busy?).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was hungrily eyeing the menu and settled on a chicken pesto sandwich and sans banana matcha drink. My kids noticed the sweets and immediately requested a chocolate dipped matcha cookie and peach iced tea. My wife doesn't like overly sweet and settled on the coconut matcha. The drinks came fast but the food took a while. My wife wasn't quite happy with the appearance of her coconut drink because it was literally matcha foam on coconut water. But, the coconut water's sweetness contrasted with the bitter matcha notes. It was a fantastic drink. My son didn't like the dark chocolate half of the matcha cookie but ate all the non-chocolate parts. The matcha cookie was chewy and non-overly sweet. My daughter ended up stealing my sandwich. She LOVED the chicken pesto sandwich. The bread was soft, the chicken tender, slices of fresh tomato, arugula and generous portions of avocado pesto. She even ate the arugula and tomato!! She now has a new favorite sandwich. My wife was apprehensive with the sans banana matcha. In her words, "it's just banana." It ended up as our favorite. The banana did not taste artificial (usually the main problem with anything banana), and it complemented the matcha really well. The Sans Banana is the only banana matcha that my wife approves. As a matcha lover, I've tried a lot of spots around the Inland Empire, and Nine Eight Five Coffee is easily one of the best matcha places in the IE. The matcha here is bright green, well-prepared, and clearly crafted with care. You can really tell they use quality matcha and take their time with the preparation. My friend and I decided to get the Signature Matcha Flight: The San Banana, Nube De Coco, Kyoto Bliss, and Te Quiero Matcha. We wanted to try several of their drinks at once, and honestly the price is pretty reasonable. The whole flight is $14.50, which comes out to about $3.63 per drink, so it's a great way to explore different flavors without committing to a full cup. Here's how I'd rank them from favorite to least favorite: Kyoto Bliss - My absolute favorite. Super balanced, smooth, and the matcha flavor really shines. San Banana - Surprisingly amazing. I usually don't like banana-flavored drinks, but this one tasted like banana pudding layered over a matcha latte. So good. Nube De Coco - Light, creamy, and refreshing with a nice coconut flavor. Te Quiero Matcha - This one was my least favorite mainly because the strawberry flavor was a bit too strong for me, which overpowered the matcha. The ambiance is really calming. The café is spacious with lots of seating, and when we visited there were a lot of people studying or working on laptops. It definitely feels like a great study spot or place to hang out for a while. Stopped here on our way back to San Diego. I ordered the Dirty Chai (6/10), and while it was okay, it wasn't anything particularly memorable. The Little Mountain drink was much better at 8/10.
