Ask the Community - Nipomo Optometry

How expensive are lens and frames?

Hi Lloyd, It's hard to give a definite dollar amount. Whether you have a vision plan or paying out of pocket, and what type of lens you require (ie; bifocals, progressive, etc).…

I cannot speak to Dr. Bylsma's expertise in glaucoma treatment and other inter-ocular surgery,…read morewhere he holds the majority of his stellar medical credentials. But for those seeking eyelid surgery, or any other cosmetic surgery, I would strongly suggest consulting a board certified plastic surgeon. At Bylsma's suggestion, I combined a minor medical eye surgery with a simultaneous mini blepharoplasty to remove excess skin on my upper eyelids. The blepharoplasty was fraught with issues that included a broken blood vessel that resulted in severe bruising for months, revisions, in one case, involving sutures that completely fell out while the wound was still healing (which led to immediately redoing the procedure over compromised skin). And other problems I won't detail here. Needless to say, I was not pleased with the end result that left both eyes with sagging skin and one eye without even an eyelid crease. I had a blepharoplasty done 15 years ago by a local board certified surgeon, so I know the difference in both surgical expertise and end results. Dr. Bylsma is an affable enough eye surgeon. But he needs to stay in his lane.

Please read before cataract (or Any) procedure:…read more Review of Dr. Zarnegar at Shepherd Eye Center, Santa Maria, CA In my early 70s, I began experiencing unusual symptoms in my left eye: intermittent fuzzy vision, the sensation of pressure like something was in the eye, especially in the mornings. Despite regular visits and discussions with my optometrist, these symptoms were repeatedly attributed to dryness or an emerging cataract. After trying punctal plugs (which later had to be surgically removed), I was referred to Dr. Zarnegar for cataract surgery and was approved for a multi-focal lens. In April 2022, I underwent the procedure on my left eye. During the surgery, I heard an unusual amount of commotion in the operating room and Dr. Zarnegar speaking loudly to his staff. It felt chaotic. The next morning, I was told I would be able to drive to my post-op appointment, but my vision in the operated eye was extremely distorted -- like looking through goggles full of water. My equilibrium was off, and I felt intense anxiety. When I asked Dr. Zarnegar if there had been an equipment issue (because of what I heard during surgery), his exact words to me were: "After over 40 years in this business, I have never had anything like this happen before. I don't know what happened! I could hardly see to do the procedure." That statement was shocking and terrifying to hear from the person who had just operated on my eye. Following the surgery, I was prescribed various medications, but none improved the situation. I was eventually told my cornea was damaged. After extensive personal research and consultations, I learned I had FUCH"S DYSTROPHY-- a corneal disease that was never diagnosed before the surgery, despite the fact that it can be identified through a standard slit lamp exam. Ultimately, the outcome of this ten-minute cataract procedure was that I required a corneal transplant. This could likely have been avoided had I been properly diagnosed beforehand. In my opinion, a specialist should have recognized this condition before recommending cataract surgery with a multi-focal lens. I share this review with great disappointment and to urge others: if you're experiencing unusual eye symptoms, please seek multiple opinions -- especially before eye surgery. Ask explicitly about Fuchs'dystrophy. My hope is to spare someone else the trauma I experienced.

Cataract procedure, February 2023: Dr. Zarnegar's misdiagnosis of my condition, before the cataract…read moreprocedure, resulted in two cornea transplants. Make sure you ask any doctor before a cataract procedure if they know how to diagnose eye dystrophies or if they have ever treated someone with Fuch's dystrophy or Map Dot dystrophy. Even if you're unaware, you may have such condition. If the answer is no to any of these questions, I highly recommend you seek another specialist. You may not even know you have any eye dystrophy, I did not, however, we rely on our surgeons to diagnose thoroughly and appropriately, before any surgical procedure. I have permanent damage to my eye, nor can it be corrected by any prescription lens. It's been a terrible experience and has destroyed my quality of life and independence by causing permanent vision loss in my right eye. When I asked for an explanation, this was his response: "In my 30+ years of practice I have never had anything like this happen, it's never happened before; I could hardly see to do the procedure. I don't know what happened". No compassion, and certainly no refund for the error he made I am still paying CareCredit monthly (3K) for an inner ocular lens which is hampering my vision.(The lens he used is not recommended for someone with Fuch's Dystrophy. Had I been diagnosed properly, a Dr. would have known that.) The cataract and subsequent cornea procedures left so much scar tissue I had to have reconstructive surgery done out of state by a specialist and another second transplant. Shepherd Eye nor Dr. Zarnegar have ever contacted me to follow up on what has proven to be a life altering experience for me. Please beware and as the patient you're going to have to research because many specialists don't take the time or don't have the knowledge. Get several consultations before any cataract or cornea procedure and check out the Corneal Dystrophy Foundation for more information. Your vision is precious.
