My kid's apartment in Mass. was airing out after a paint job, so she escaped to spend the weekend with us. Lucky for us, our Saturday turned into an excuse to visit a new spot. Tucked away at the corner of Deming St and Mill Hill Rd in Woodstock, NY, Nirvana is exactly what the name promises- it's a calm, sensory bliss, has warm lighting and a slight Indian spice in the air. Then there's the food. The tandoori shrimp came out sizzling hot with perfect charred edges, the garlic naan was tasty but it was the truffle naan that brought the fire. The real showstopper was my cardamom+saffron+ passion fruit cocktail full of tropical attitude. Service was great. Came here for dinner and it was such a great night! The restaurant has such a nice ambiance with both private and community tables. We made a reservation ahead of time and was promptly seated. The drinks and food were delicious but it did take over an hour for our orders to come through even though tables that came after us were getting their meals. Probably just a once off and the rest of dinner made up for that mishap. The paneer curry was delicious and the chicken tikka masala was so tender. When searching for dinner spots in Woodstock, Nirvana surprisingly never registered on my radar, but it was recommended to us by some bartenders at another local establishment. I quickly made reservations for the following evening and looked forward to trying it. When we arrived that night, we were in awe of how modern and beautiful the space was. They had 3 separate dining rooms and a small bar. The decor utilized a lot of dark colors, which, when paired with the dim lighting, made for a seductive vibe. Our server, Vee, was a complete sweetheart! He was super friendly and diligent on making sure we knew his top recommendations across the menu. We started by ordering cocktails, and I opted for something with gin, Indian spices, and passion fruit. It was tart, sweet, and boozy, and I loved it! We also decided to share the "Mini Masala Dosa" as a starter, and I put the name in quotes, as it was a bit misleading...in a good way! First of all, there was not a single dosa, but two dosaS. Secondly, they were huge! The South Indian crispy crepe was stuffed with spiced potatoes and curry leaves; the stuffing was packed with flavor, making the dish very addicting. The wraps were served with a coconut chutney and a sambar dipping sauce, though we were not fans of either. I ordered the Sea Bass Tandoori for my entree, and I had mixed feelings about it. The fish was cooked perfectly, leaving it delicate and tender. However, its hefty rub of mint, cilantro, peppers, garlic, and ginger was a bit too intense for my liking. I did, however, like that the meal came with some grilled vegetables, as well as basmati rice with peas for the table. While I ate my bass, my companion dined on the Lamb Vindaloo, which was an interesting rendition, as the sauce was more tangy and cinnamon-laced than we were used to. It was very good, just different. We also each ordered a Garlic Naan, which was excellent! It had the perfect amount of fluffiness and lots of fresh garlic. $6 per piece of naan instead of basket of naan is laughable. The fact the naan was more flatbread than naan makes it an insult. Add odd takes on the flavors, a "short" mango lassi in a tin cup more suited to a Moscow Mule, overhead lighting that constantly flickered, and a distracted staff (the "to go" portion of our order came out plated after we said no to dessert), the inflated bill makes me want to invite anyone who goes there twice to poker night. read more

This place is a gem. It replaced an Indian Restaurant which was, frankly, a disaster. Nirvana remodeling job is just beautiful. Chicken biriyani was flavorful with just the right amount of spice. Chicken pieces, plentiful and delicious and the bread covering yummy! Never had biriyani with the bread covering but loved it. Lamb korma cooked to perfection, with a sauce that was mouth watering. The naan is spectacular. Just baked to protection. Not over or underdone-- just right. We had the garlic and plain. Both A+. Underwhelming food - flavor was seriously lacking, and tasted like the ingredients were not cooked together long (eg, lacking depth of flavor, lacking salt, etc). We purposely didn't order naan and asked if each entree comes with rice - to which the answer was yes. They brought one tiny bowl of rice for two 6' tall grown men. Don't be so cheap guys. We told our waiter that we each wanted rice. Won't be returning. They also need to increase the heat in the restaurant - our table area was cold & drafty. read more

Some of the greatest Indian food I have eaten in a restaurant. Their balance of flavors with technique is superb, I liked this better than their sister restaurant Cinnamon in Rhinebeck. I gave this restaurant three stars due to the ridiculous wait time! We waited an hour before our first appetizer came out. And had to wait another 30 minutes for the second. Once that was served, our entrees came out. The food was very good. We liked the chaat platter, daal, duck vindaloo. They apologized for the delay explaining that they were down a server and the printer in the kitchen broke down. I live near Woodstock and have been to Nivana Woodstock twice now with a party of three. I've tried a variety of their offerings. This is a small upscale restaurant that serves different types of regional cuisines of India. It differs from most "Indian" restaurants which tend to serve one regional style (Punjabi, South Indian, Vegetarian, Keralan, etc.) which may differ greatly from another. This place has been open for about a year and is a popular spot. Reservations are recommended. Both times I visited Nivana, it was packed with diners. The noise level was an issue; it was difficult to hear what the people across the table were saying, and also what the server was saying. I prefer quieter places to dine. It's clean, with modern interior design and lighting. I should say here that I have lived in India for what amounts to years since my first year-long visit in 1971. I've lived in New Delhi and Mumbai (Bombay) and traveled extensively around the entire country. So I have eaten many regional types of food in homes and restaurants there. The food served at Nirvana was acceptable, and some dishes quite tasty IMO. This is upscale Woodstock dining, meant for the well off monied folks who don't mind spending up to one hundred dollars per person for a meal and a drink. Cocktails ($20) and I believe wine are available. One item I judge a South Asian restaurant on is their Roti, the unleavened whole wheat flatbread. At Nirvana, I did not enjoy the roti. It was thin, dry, and lacked the great taste of well made tandoori roti. The Nan (white flour usually made with some leavening) bread was better represented. Service is generally good, and the food well prepared with quality ingredients. read more

All our dishes were amazing and full of flavor. The ambiance is romantic - dark enough to be flattering with enough table light to read the menu. Lovely and chill vibe. Our spicy mango margaritas were yummy but had nothing on the rim. A mixture of sweet and spicy crystals around the rim would have been perfect. The service? Umm, not so much. We were very thirsty upon arrival so when our server finally came over, the first thing I did was ask for water but instead of bringing it immediately, he made us give him our entire order. Next, our expeditor brought the wrong appetizer which would have been ok except after acting surprised and taking it away, the server returned to tell us it wasn't his fault. Way to throw your coworker under the bus! After finishing our entrees, we specifically told our server we would skip dessert and order chai instead. But soon another expeditor dropped off a large dessert plate in front us with 2 spoons. We weren't sure if it was a gift from the chef or what and we sat there for a few minutes wondering what to do. I was about to dig in, and my dining companion actually picked up one of the spoons, when our server returned, mumbled an apology, grabbed the plate away (with both spoons) and gave it to the table next to us. Horrors! I would never want to eat that after some strangers sat breathing on it and touching the spoons! Ew! So the service was awkward, to put it politely, and that's why I deducted one star. I would still go back, though. I just hope that server gets his act together. read more

I hadn't liked the food at their Rhinebeck restaurant, which I characterized as "Indian food for Republicans." Of course, opinions differ on what makes good Indian food, and Republicans are going to want their Indian food to be a certain way, and they're going to want restaurants where they can get it. Nirvana, though, is not like Cinnamon in Rhinebeck. At Nirvana they make some of the dishes surprisingly spicy, which came as a bit of a shock to one of the gentler-palated people in our party. The food could use a bit more salt, but I was impressed with the unusual chana mushroom curry they had that I'd never seen anywhere else. It was nice and spicy, and I would go back again just for that. The gut remodel of the old Indian restaurant whose space Nirvana occupies has successfully purged it of its deep history of marginal hygiene, producing a cheerful cozy place with a delightful ambiance. My only complaint is the absence of mulligatawny soup. The old restaurant that used to occupy that space might've given you digestive issues, but they made the best mulligatawny this side of Islamabad. read more

The chicken korma was decent. The butter chicken in the center along with the vindaloo at the end tasted like they were flavorled with Frank's Red Hot. I have never had an odder Indian red sauce than I had here. If you're looking for chicken wings then order the vindaloo or the butter chicken. Not super impressed on my first visit. The Naan was good but how can you mess that up. Maybe they should have cut down on the cardamom and saffron on the kefir and saved more money for better peppers for the main dishes. Not impressed. Not quite Nirvana. The atmosphere is nice, cozy; the food was tasty but portions are very small for the price. The service was horrendous. It was not a busy night. Appetizers came out after dinner was served, after asking repeatedly for the appetizers before we had our entrees. We ordered naan bread with dinner, that showed up after we had eaten our dinner and we never received two of the items we ordered. When brought to the manager's attention, she became hostile and we had to ask for them to remove them from the bill. Hopefully, they will work the kinks out. read more
