Joe the proprietor is everything a service provider should be. He is honest and detail oriented and he takes the time and the trouble to explain what he will do and what he has done. From the reviews I read in choosing his auto service I see that he meets another important criteria that many service providers don't. He is consistent. Cars are not my jam but the are clearly Joe's. Nothing was more evident than when my car was picked up and returned to me and I read the three page list of things he had done and saw my bill which was less then he had quoted me. Yes, you read that correctly and no, you do not need to read it again. Or maybe you do. Yes please read this again. In fact read this entire review again and commit it to memory. Because I have, for whatever reason known to man, met every other type of service provider this month and none of my experiences were anything like getting my car serviced here. I will leave you with this. My back sensors or the sensors in the back...whatever they are called :) have not been working. The dealership told me they could run a diagnostic for $XXX (yes, I caught my breath too and there were real numbers when they talked to me!) but...were quick to point out that they 'could not begin to tell me what the true cost of fixing the sensors would be since they hadn't run the diagnostic yet.' Now you have to know what kind of car I drive to know the tone their service staff use but let's just say they strive to be condescending in everything they do. I got my water pump replaced but that did not solve the underlying radiator problem. Price was just slightly cheaper than the dealer. So they are not cheap. Perhaps I should have taken it to the dealer because for just a little more, I could have solved the problem for sure. I feel I paid for a temporary fix. read more

Took my Honda Pilot in for transmission service, differential service, and replace the timing belt. Thought I was in a dealership by the way I "urged" to get a 90k service and other stuff. I specifically went to Nishikawa to avoid the standard dealership servicing crap. The dealers standard services don't match up with the Pilot recommended servicing, because each dealership is allowed to design their own servicing marketing. Anyway, I opted to add oil change to my visit, and the mechanic that did the oil change lost my oil drain plug and replaced it with some non OEM item that stripped the threads out of the oil drain hole. Now I get to have the entire oil pan replaced for about $400. Also, they never serviced the differential. I used to have faith in this place, but never again. read more

OMG, I just used to LOVE these guys! Until recently.I have taken my car there for about 2 years, like everyone stated here, a stellar job every time.THEN four days after a service and air conditioning service, the car over heated I had to stop and look under the hood and there was not a drop of coolant. No leak in my driveway etc. After a long time they said they couldn't figure out why now after replacing coolant why it kept over heating. They told me they didn't have time to figure it out and although they didnt' charge me for the check, like reviewer Vicki H. I got the extreme cold shoulder. Our very friendly relationship just got really weird. It was almost like they were admitting guilt by having nothing to do with me or my car. I was in shock, WTF? Be on the look out for Joe and David having some serious mood swings. As for my car, its still over heating and just may be history. Every one makes mistakes, and I think this one is on David, as he probably forgot to put coolant in or at least check on it. These guys lately have been acting like they are on drugs. Just weird. this place got great reviews....but i was not happy with the service....they kept my car for days cuz they are not open on the weekends and the problem was hard to find? well they finally found the pin head hole in the compressor that caused the freon to leak .....took days and then they didnt find a used part but instead put a brand new one in.....which cost 500.00....mind you this car is 10 years old...i really didnt need a new one....would have been happier if i paid half the amt.....so i cant give them rave reviews.....not planning on going here again....thank you. read more

I've taken my cars to Joe at Nishikawa for 10 years. He's found and fixed problems the stupid dealer couldn't figure out, including a clutch issue that the dealer said was normal wear (a new clutch every 15K miles is not normal wear, guys). After I got my new car I was actually happy when the free service period expired because I could start taking the car in to Nishikawa for the periodic service appts - I trust them way more than any dealer's service dept. I've taken foreign and domestic cars to them for service and I've never had a single problem - they're always honest, helpful and reliably good mechanics. Great people and great service! We take both our Toyotas and just took my moms 198? Jeep Grand Cheroke that a previous shop had gotten so goofed up it was nearly impossible to get it out of park! And this after over 2 grand for a rebuilt trans and taking it back twice. Naturally Joe and the folks at Nishikawa got it fixed in no time and for very little money. Great great great. I was very disappointed. I trusted these people and very dishonest. Get a second opinion before you let them work on your car.

I faced the daunting proposition of getting my 1980 Toyota through its latest smog test. (It emitted a lot of exhaust, smelled of gas, and had barely passed last time.) Fortunately, I decided to bring my car to Nishikawa Auto Service on the basis of recommendations by people I know. It turned out (as I understand it) that the EGR port was completely plugged solid with carbon. It took a fair amount of work to just get to the deposits. Rusted-solid bolts didn't help! After that, cycles of soaking with solvents and cleaning were required to free up all the passageways, inch by inch I imagine. They worked patiently at that for several days. The next obstacle was locating replacement parts. For a 32 year-old car that is not easy. (About 10 years ago I got the last ceiling light that a dealer in Alhambra had.) The necessary parts were found at a location in Tennessee, the last stop before ordering from archives in Japan itself. David had to make a second run to the smog testing center as one measurement didn't quite make it, but I was not charged for the extra time consumed. Sheer persistence on one of those "awkward jobs" that do not admit quick and easy solutions plus the fact that I only paid $547.00 (which included the cost for taking the car to the smog test station) requires a 5-star rating. At all times they were unfailingly courteous and helpful. Their duty driver gave me a lift home. They were also willing to pick me up at my home, but that proved unnecessary. As a bonus, the knocking/pinging problem went away. (I had tried to resolve that problem at another place but without any luck.) They also noticed evidence that a battery cell was going bad, something that could be dealt with later. Joe, honest as always, did inform me that my long wait could have been shortened had he taken an alternate route in addressing the problem. But at the time, given the information available, he made what he thought was the best choice for me. In football and auto mechanics 20-20 hindsight is but a dream. Reality involves uncertainty that is only minimized--not eliminated--by a mechanic's skill. To sum up, I have found a new mechanic. May Joe and David stay in business for a long time! read more

I had an airbag light come up on my car that my OBDII scanner could not read. The dealer wanted $160 just to read the code. I called Joe and explained what was going on, and he was shocked (but probably not) that the dealer wanted to charge that much. He told me to come by and that he would read the code for free. I stopped by that afternoon and Joe pulled the code - a defective seat belt buckle, which is a warranty item. Had it not been a warranty item, I most likely would have had Joe repair the issue. A little bit of goodwill goes a long way. I will certainly keep Joe in mind for future repair work, and will recommend him to others. Thanks Joe! read more

Really nice staff, my truck broke down around the corner from here and they allowed me to hang out in their lobby and leave my truck outside untill the tow truck arrived to pick me up. They told me what was wrong with the truck free of charge and directed me to places where i could get parts for it since it is a classic truck. Even though they didnt work on the truck the guy was nice enought to come out of lunch break to jack up the truck and tell me what was wrong with it with a great attitude. Been going here for awhile for oil changes and other simple problems that cant be easily fixed without garage space. Stopped in without an appt because my AC was intermittently going out. They didn't have time to take the car in, but still brought someone out to take a look under the hood. The mechanic quickly identified the problem and told me how to replace the offending part and where to pick it up. I followed his advice and my AC was fixed for $6 instead of what had been quoted as at least $100 at the dealer. That is service to be proud of in my opinion and this place has definitely won my loyalty. read more

i stopped taking my car here and so did my boyfriend after sweaty Joe took my car for a joy ride on a lunch break. He also told me that I needed new brake pads and gave me the percentage of wear. I decided to wait. I finally had them done a year and a half later, but the percentage of wear still did not match their quote at the place I now take my car too. i am a very patient woman, but i don't appreciate being taken for a ride. read more
