I feel like the yelp reviews should equivalently be just as good as the ones on google because this place is genuinely the best sushi I've had. The sushi is so fresh! The wait time is understandable since the owner is the only one making the sushi and working alongside his wife. I got the Kamikaze and shared it with two other people and the time it took to come out was 35mins since he had three other customers to serve which is not even bad at all but I'm putting this here just in case there are some impatient Karens. We left feeling satisfied with our meal! Only "negative" thing I had to say is that my cup had something stuck on the rim but I drank around it and scraped it off with a napkin so it's fine. Probably missed it while dish washing. Other than that, the place is kept very clean and we made sure to tip them lots because they deserve it! Mr. Yoshi put a lot of care into his pieces and came over to serve us more tea from time to time. Overall ambiance was quiet and calm. The food came out beautifully and tastefully. If you haven't tried, you're definitely missing out!
Best sushi in the Albany area. Quiet, unassuming restaurant that beats every other sushi place I've been this north of NYC. Don't make the mistake of going somewhere flashier. It's still BYOB, but who cares- food is amazing. We loved all the spicy salmon and tuna rolls. Gyoza was perfect and the yellowtail, you'll need more than one order.
No frills. Traditional Sushi all the way. A hole in the wall joint away from all the action. If there was a picture of a sushi chef needed for the dictionary the fella here would certainly fit the bill. I am a true lover of traditional sushi. A sushi chef has three jobs really. The procurement of great fish and seafood, the preparation of the ingredients and the presentation of the sushi/sashimi. It is clear that all of these things are happening here via a husband and wife team that has lots of experience. My wife and I sat at the sushi bar when the restaurant was fairly empty. They had note cards for you to make your selections. No Uni today unfortunately :( I attempted to hand my card to the sushi chef but he very intensely told me that his wife needed to walk over to take my card and hand it to him. I found this very odd but that must tie in to that whole traditional thing. I ordered the Kanpai which was essentially a sushi deluxe and elected to add on Salmon Roe. Each piece was delicious. Wasabi was placed under each piece of fish. I was recently educated by fellow yelpers that this is how traditional sushi is served. I don't like too much wasabi so it wasn't my favorite. Despite that, the rice and fish were wonderful. I almost never order the egg but it came with the order and it was outstanding. I saved my salmon roe for last and it was the best I have ever had. His source for this delicacy must be first rate. My wife ordered the Spicy Chirashi Don. A generous bowl of sashimi over rice with a spicy sauce. She loved it. I could see my self coming back to order it. I am not sure I would be running back to Yoshi but absolutely appreciated it for what it is. I most certainly understand why it is a go to place in the area. Word is that the couple running the restaurant is set to retire. You may not have much time left to try this authentic sushi experience.
I came to Yoshi as a stop on my Upstate Sushi Tour whereby I order the lunch special and a side of saba (pickled mackerel nigiri). Yoshi's lunch special includes both salad and (okay) miso soup and is an excellent value at $8.99. The selection is non-standard, however. If you look at my pictures the four "sushi" in the front to go along with the eight "rolls" in the back are: some crackly eelskin inside yet another roll; cooked shrimp; a sort of seafood medley in a nori collar with a prominent slice of clam; and a thin slice of seared tuna. These are probably the leftovers from last night's dinner, I respect that. But no chance to judge Yoshi's raw fish. As to the saba, I may have been spoiled by a recent visit to Unagi where they house-cure their mackerel but this was nothing special and the piece was a bit miserly and raggedly cut. By dumb luck/accident, however, I had also ordered "sake" or raw salmon and that gave me a taste of what Yoshi can do with nigiri. The piece was generous, perfect temperature, and so fresh I felt like it was still swimming upstream. I promptly ordered pairs of two more favorites, hamachi and maguro, and those were just as good Again, see my pictures. Appearance says a lot in sushi. This is a small place, plain but neat as a pin, and run by the Yoshi couple which is both charming and with drawbacks. Mr. Yoshi was doing everything himself when I first got there including taking orders, serving tea and salad and cashing out customers as well as making sushi. Mrs. Yoshi arrived just as I was leaving around noon. This multitasking does lead to some of the pieces being a bit raggedy, an issue that's been noted by other reviewers. And though Mr. Yoshi is a sushi making machine he can only do so much and you may have to wait a bit at busy times. If I lived near Yoshi's I'd be in here all the time. It's excellent sushi and a good value (including the a la carte pieces, though they are obviously much more expensive than the lunch special).
I can't believe so many years may have passed since we last had sushi from Yoshi. So many people have said the best sushi they've had in the Capital region was at or from Yoshi. But we kept on trying new places over the years as each one opened. None of them that are still in business today ever became a regular for us. Some had better and fresher sushi than others, and some offered fancier and bigger maki (rolls) that were almost a meal in themselves. But I think we may now start returning to Yoshi's to make it our regular sushi place. It's a warm and inviting, no frills type of place. First of all, the Miso Soup is just the way we like it. It is flavorful with just enough dashi, tofu, seaweed, and green onion. But most important is the freshness of all the fish used in the sushi. We had probably ten different fish on this visit and all of it was deliciously fresh. A real positive for my wife was the size of the maki pieces. She was able to easily place a whole piece of maki in her mouth without biting it and having all the remaining contents fall apart. The nigiri have an ample amount of fresh fish on each ball of rice allowing for two or three bites. Just looking at the pictures provided by reviewers should be enough to encourage you to visit. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of what is served. Interestingly, a comparison with a menu from seven years ago shows many prices have not changed. Service was friendly, fast and efficient. Large cups of hot tea were offered as soon as we sat down and refilled as needed. Yoshi Sushi does not have an alcohol license, but their web page says BYOB.
I returned on a weekend afternoon, to find a completely empty restaurant save the one chef and one server. With zero waiting time, there was no distraction from the food. (Previous rating was lowered due to long wait time.) ...although I think I saw the chef cheat with the spicy salmon maki - with a bottle of Siracha (the maki was constructed from freshly cut strips of fish, not some unknown paste/filler that is too common in lesser restaurants). But it actually was spicy. I will gladly return soon, but I'll just need to ensure seating times when there are few other customers. 2019 05 04. S22.

I wish I had room for more!! As I entered the restaurant I was immediately greeted with friendly faces. I sat down at the sushi bar and as I was sitting down I was given hot tea & a miso soup without asking (which was VERY appreciated on this 18° day). Their menu was easy to look through with plenty of options and a nice casual environment to go with it. I got the Linda roll and two different types of nigiri and holy portion sizes!! They were full and incredibly fresh bites. Highly recommend, will be back when I'm in town again. read more

Recently went back with a group and learned the restaurant is now under new ownership. There are currently two sushi chefs who are also handling waitstaff duties. When we arrived, two tables were finishing up, and not long after, our group of five and another group of five were seated. We didn't order anything excessive -- just a few rolls each and some edamame. The sushi quality is still great, but it took nearly two hours for our orders to arrive. During that time, the two tables that had been occupied when we came in still hadn't been cleared, and we eventually helped ourselves to water and tea refills. I'm sure we'll be back again, but I'd recommend giving the new owners some time to find their rhythm -- and hopefully bring on a dedicated server to handle the non-sushi-making tasks. read more
Still the best sushi in Latham by far! Yoshi has a different owner now. Mr Yoshi has finally been able to have a well deserved retirement! We ordered takeout and were so glad to see that the quality is still the same. We got the Banzai Sushi Platter which includes 33 pieces, salad and Miso soup and 2 other rolls, the David roll and the Rainbow roll. The David roll had a delicious combination of eel, salmon and avocado. Yum! We got 3 salads and 4 Miso soups? Not sure why but the number was perfect for us. The sushi was generous and also fresh tasting. Looking forward to see if the new owner adds some other menu items. read more

The highest quality sushi in the capital region. We frequent this place quite a bit because it is delicious and they don't get the cheap type of fish like many all you can eat sushi places. The place is very quiet a nice place to go on a date. read more

Authentic food - served by a Japanese gentleman. Clean and quiet ambiance. Service was excellent. I would definitely go there again for sushi. Reasonable price. Plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. read more

My favorite sushi restaurant! When I step in I feel like I'm back in hometown Izakaya! The best quality in Albany! Very reasonable price!!! If you like real sushi I highly recommend this place! Thank you Taisho(chef) for providing a wonderful sushi. Please stay safe and healthy! read more

No, I'm not in a bad mood. Just back off. This is a small Mom & Pop, like a lot of other sushi restaurants, and when it's busy they have a hard time keeping up with demand. But an hour after being seated we still didn't have our meals. Oh, the company was good, and I was the least likeable at this point because I was becoming impatient (imagine that! ME impatient!!! ha ha ha). I digress. OK one server, one sushi chef. Others got their meals before we did. I hate that. You ask about the food???? WELL, the salads and miso soups were excellent. The shumai were a delight. The lunchbox special was a deal at $9.95 with lots of fresh raw fish sushis. The shrimp tempura roll, no raw fish for the weak at heart, was crunchy and creamy and perfect. I hated my Dinner Box ($20). Not attractive, and there were only 2 pieces of sushi!!! Well, not technically - only 2 raw fish sushi. I got a shrimp sushi and an egg sushi and a smoked mackerel sushi and a giant piece of cooked mackerel sushi. Too much mackerel. I burped fishy for the rest of the day. Our server, one of the owners, was obviously nervous when she saw that I was taking notes. She got nicer and a bit more attentive after that, but that was just as we were leaving. Up to that point she was ornery at best. We have many many sushi choices in the Albany area these days. Yoshi is low on my list. Maybe they should just hire some help? Probably my fav sushi joint in the capital district. It's in a small strip mall, parking seems like it would be an issue, but it has never been for me yet. Inside, always customers there, other ppl who know good sushi. Sometimes packed and I had to sit at the bar, other times only a smattering of other folks. Don't expect special lighting or music. No frills, just for serious sushi lovers. Onto the food: App: gyoza. It was good, not mind blowing, but a good warm up. Sushi and sashimi combo: sizeable pieces. Each piece carefully prepared by the sushi chef. This is probably more than enough for most people, but I am not most ppl, and I knew that, so I also got 4 more salmon sushi. And THAT, folks, is the perfect combo. Healthy, delicious. :) Yoshi sushi is now my regular sushi place. :) read more

Best sushi restaurant ever. I haven't had a real sushi for a long time. This place has so so so good sushi! Also, this place look like a traditional Japanese restaurant. Who is looking for real sushi, I recommend this place for you guys! The prices aren't too expensive, everyone can deal with it. After my sister paid, I feel like I ate more than my sister paid. read more
I love sushi, and have had it all over the world. The best sushi that I've ever had was Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. The second best sushi is right here at Yoshi's. The third best was at Morimoto's NYC. The fact that we have such a great sushi location right here in Albany is truly amazing, but to enjoy the experience there's a couple things to keep in mind. 1. When I say "sushi", I mean nigiri sushi, a small pillow of rice with a piece of wasabi on it, covered by a piece of raw fish. This is the sushi that I had in Japan, as rolls are a Western food, and not a Japanese food. My wife and brother in law have ordered rolls here, and found the taste of the rolls much closer to sushi, with more fish, and less fillers and dressings, but I still prefer the sushi. I've also had their miso soup, crab and shrimp shumai, and a couple other items over the years, and all have been quite good. 2. Price is on the higher side, but that's because good fish costs more. Each single piece of sushi is an average of $3. I can easily eat 20 pieces, which would run about $80 with tip and tax. However, I rarely do that here, as there's places like Kuma Ani for gorging myself on sushi. Here, I savor each piece as I eat it, the flavors are clean and delicate, the texture perfect, there will be no bones in your unagi, the uni will taste the same as it did in Japan, the hamachi will be perfect every time. The size is quite generous as well. 3. Every piece of sushi is made by Yoshi. That means that every piece of sushi is perfect, but also that it takes time. There's seating for about 30 people in the establishment. If every person order 10 pieces, that is 300 pieces. At even 1 minute per piece of sushi, that's five hours! They're open 11 AM - 9PM daily. Avoid being there 12-2 and 6-8, unless you have a couple of hours to sit, relax, and enjoy the complimentary tea. The hot items are prepared by his wife, and take minutes to come out, so you will not sit hungry. Much on the gyoza, shumai, soups, or whatever else your heart desires. One of my best experiences here, was with a friend, coming in half way between lunch and dinner. The place was practically empty, and we sat at the sushi bar. We asked Yoshi to just start making sushi for us, and giving them to us one at a time. There was no wait, as by the time we finished a piece, the next one was ready. We also were able to experience his selection, which was excellent. read more

Ok here's the deal. There seems to be a ton of sushi places opening up in the area. I have eaten at most. And they are all varying degrees of ok. But Yoshi's is something special. Fresh. So fresh. Yoshi knows what he is doing. Yes sometimes the rolls look a little rushed when being crafted but who cares since the taste and quality is exceptional. Plus Yoshi is the only sushi chef making every order. The miso soup is excellent. I know you may think so what right? Well of all the miso soups I have had from the area this one kills the rest. The nigiri is delicious and fresh. And with that hint of wasabi makes it exciting and authentic. The staff which is Yoshi and his wife are very nice and friendly. If going on the weekend be prepared to wait even after you have ordered. Remember Yoshi is the only chef preparing the sushi. But it gives you a chance to relax and enjoy your company. It's well worth waiting given how good this place is. I can't say enough good things about this place. read more

As for someone who had lived in NYC for over 15 years and spoiled with tons of real Japanese food there, plus 3 trips in Japan, it has been my mission to find real Japanese food after moving to Capital Region. Finally this is the only place I found so far that the chef/owner is Japanese. And right away I can tell the food is totally different. My first time there, I went with a big group. Yoshi prepared us a special homey dinner. It was such a treat. It was like I went to a small private party of a big Japanese family. I then was there many times later. Lunch Special is also really special. Yoshi picks what in it himself. So it is different every lunch. I enjoy it very much. read more
If you look up "no-frills" in the dictionary, you'll see that it's defined as offering or providing only the most important or basic things: not fancy or luxurious. You may also see a picture of Yoshi Sushi. Although my brother and I were the only ones in the restaurant, service was essentially nonexistent. We were served water once we were seated but never asked if we'd like anything else to drink, or what we wanted to eat for that matter. The menu, which contains a handful of appetizers but is otherwise entirely sushi, is a single sheet of paper on which you mark off what you'd like to eat before handing it to the chef. We ordered a couple lunch specials and a bamboo roll (eel, cucumber, avocado) to share. At $8.99 for the lunch special, it's significantly cheaper than the other sushi bars in the area. Lunch includes miso soup, salad, 4 pieces of sushi, and 8 pieces of roll. The soup and salad were tasty but nothing special, and the sushi, while fresh, was middle of the pack. I love eel so I was especially looking forward to the bamboo roll, but it missed the mark, failing to deliver on flavor. The standout for me was the shrimp, which was cooked nicely and super tender. Despite being average in taste, at $8.99 you'll be hard pressed to find a better deal for lunch. However, if you're looking for outstanding service and exceptional sushi, there are other places to go. read more
