Since Made In Hawaii Foods closed, I have been hoping to find a spot I could get amazing mochi from. I had high hopes when coming here and I don't even know why. Don't get me wrong, you can get your basic mochi choices: Azuki, chi chi dango, and so many others I didn't bother picking up. I figured I'd try the basics and see how it is from there. I'll just say it's basic-basic. This shop is just too far for me to travel to for basic mochi. The parking is awful. And mochi just isn't cheap. If you haven't tried it, I would say try it. Best mochi on island! They constantly make good quality mochi and there are a variety of different types of flavors. The workers package it for you very nicely and it is sealed with their sticker. The only thing you need to try here is their peanut butter mochi. The mochi is soft and chewy and the peanut butter is smooth with some pieces of peanuts for a bit of a crunch. Delicious. Peanut butter mochi is their top seller. It was amazing. I ended up with only one peanut butter mochi on my first round. After the first bite, I had to go back and order three more pieces. I should have ordered 10 pieces more. We also got the chi chi dango (individually wrapped mochi bites) and I wasn't a fan of it. These come with no fillings. They are good but I like my mochi with fillings. I brought the assorted box and it came with three flavors. The flavors were strawberry, blueberry, and orange. I was fortunate enough to finally find this shop after having it on my To-Visit list for literally years back in March. Let's just say when I returned in April on another trip it was the second stop from the airport after the also-delicious Zippys nearby. When you go it's hard to resist ordering basically one of everything but it's worth it especially if you happen to be adventurous with your sweets. Being from the Bay Area, I am fortunate to get high quality mochi (and when it comes to the classics, Nisshodo isn't my top choice) but chichi dango is much more difficult to find and so I try to buy as many as my stomach can handle whenever we visit Honolulu. I am a HUGE fan of their kinako chichi dango which is dusted with soybean powder. There's nothing inside these little pink and white slabs of sweet mochi but they're so perfectly chewy and satisfying that I can't get enough of them! It is extremely rare to find an old school Japanese wagashi shop nowadays. This one operates amongst a cluster of warehouses, so it might be difficult to find. Once you do, you enter an unassuming shop filled with a variety of Japanese mochi and manju encased within the display counter. *Salivating now. They have a number of mochi flavors and they are a mix of traditional and local flavors such as taro, lilikoi, coconut, and pineapple. Each flavor of mochi is $1.25. Daifuku (bean filled) is $2.00ea. I went with a half dozen which included lilikoi, green tea, lychee, and melona. Their mochi was very well done; of a perfect density and softness with ample, pasty filling. I wish I had enough sense to get a piece of daifuku but they do seem to showcase the mochi flavors on top the most. The flavors though were spectacular and really highlighted the corresponding flavors to a tee. Green tea and lychee are an automatic favorite, but the Lilikoi as a less traditional flavor really shined too. I wasn't really a fan of the Melona as that particular fruit is a bit too in your face. I brought these home with me in the plane ride and consumed them throughout the week. They held up pretty well after refrigeration. High quality only with these traditionally prepared (by hand) Japanese sweets! read more

This is easily the best and freshest mochi that I've had in my life. The staff were very patient and attentive as we decided which of their many mochi flavors we wanted to try. Out of the ones that we tasted, I would say that the lilikoi and the peanut butter were my favorites. It is located behind the little Mall in the industrial section and was a little bit hard to find. The place has a variety of delicious mochi ranging from peanut butter to Coconut flavors. The retail store is small & simple, and the rear of the building is mainly used as he Manufacturing facility. The prices are quite affordable. This is a old-time establishment, but I wasn't impressed. I might have had high expectations going in. Yes, as did most of us born and raised in Hawaii, I grew up eating the soft chi chi dango treats when soccer moms would bring them for kid's parties, sporting events and asian holidays. So I was more than excited to try all the azuki and mung bean filled mochi options! The peanut butter was the best of the choices (bc I'm partial to pb) but other than that and chi chi dango and kinako, I wasn't a fan. Coarse and smooth azuki bean fillings were dry. The lilikoi, coconut and pb fillings are mixed with mung bean (aka white bean) filling. I don't think the flavors complement each other, although it's definitely a novel idea. Peanut butter mochi is good as well as unique, but our favorites were coconut and lilikoi. Chi chi dango is definitely a do not miss purchase, we loved both the original ( pink and white) as well as the mixed fruit that had 4 flavors. Place doesn't look like much from the outside and could be difficult to find if you don't know where you are going, but it's worth it. I grew up eating their chi chi dango and it's different from the Japanese version since there's coconut milk in it. This time I tried the lilikoi mochi and it was incredible! Dare I say it was even better than the chi chi dango? The mochi part was smoother/softer and the an (the bean filling) was tart and fruity. Come early since they sell out of their favorites and be sure you check their hours since they are not ideal for the working person. If you're a tourist, just know that it will look like you're driving into a narrow lot of a bunch of warehouses crammed together, and you will have come to the right place. read more

This little candy shop is hard to find! You'll have to follow Google maps, but it's within this industrial area that you would not expect to find a candy shop in! There is parking out front and you'll see a sign marking the store. Inside, the store is very small and there's one woman selling the candies, most of which are mochi. There are plenty of flavors and they are very reasonably priced (around $1-2 dollars each). I got the melona mochi and the coconut mochi, both were quite good and had strong flavors. The fillings were nice and I could taste fresh coconut pieces in the coconut one. It wasn't overly sweet either. Overall, quite a unique candy store and the mochi tasted very authentic! I bookmarked this place a year ago and finally stopped in! The older lady was very helpful in explaining the different flavors and which ones were her favorite. I got green tea, lilikoi, melona, lychee, manju, and azuki bean mochi. They were all pretty tasty. Lilikoi was my favorite. It explains why there were only a few left. The softest mochi I've had since my last trip to Japan. The manju wasn't that great. Maybe I was spoiled by my grandmas fresh flaky manju growing up so that was what I expected. It was nothing like that... in fact it was cold in the middle. Maybe out of the freezer? They are pretty reasonable in price. Smaller and more affordable than the Instagram based mochi makers. Their chichi dango is a family favorite, it runs out within a day between 3 people. Their parking lot is a bit difficult to get through, I barely know how to do it myself. I have unknowingly been eating the chichi dango from here for years. Recently, when searching for the best mochi on the island, I came across Nisshodo Candy Store and Yelp and immediately recognized the paper wrappers from the chichi dango and wondered why I had never come here before. I visited close to closing time on a weekday and was happy to find that there was still a wide variety of mochi available. In fact, they brought out a whole new fresh batch while we were in the shop. It took me a while to decide what to get because there were so many tantalizing options. Always a fan of trying new things, I opted for some of the flavored mochi. I ordered a green tea mochi with azuki filling and a lilikoi mochi. My husband ordered a melona mochi. I was not sure what to expect from the lilikoi and melona but both were really good! They do a good job executing the flavors and I love that I can keep coming back and trying new ones. With a wide variety of offerings and high quality, Nisshodo is definitely the spot to go for mochi. read more

A little hidden mochi gem behind a little shopping plaza. I have to admit it was hard to find at first but it's definitely well worth it. I came here on my last day in oahu to pick up my mom some mochi since she loves eating it. It held up my 11 hour flight back to NYC. Most importantly it remained really fresh. My mom loves it! I must say it was the best Mochi I ever had to date. Two little ladies running the store you can tell they had their hands full. They answered every question I had. BEST MOCHI! They have mochi at the store to purchase but if you need a lot I'd recommend calling ahead of time. Their website also has helpful pictures and descriptions under "Gallery" if you are unsure of what type of mochi you want. I needed a pack of 30 so I called a week in advance. I did a variation of peanut butter (yellow), habutai - smooth azuki (white or pink), yaki manju (baked), green tea (brown), and lychee (white). The mochi is so soft, the perfect texture. They also don't overfill the insides, it has the perfect amount of filling to complement the mochi. I wasn't a huge fan of their yaki manju. Their store is a small hole in the wall, but just look for the sign and park right in front. I went mid morning on a Friday to pick up and luckily their front stalls were open. If it's busy, I'd recommend parking in the lot on the other side by Hana Tea, Lox Bagels, etc. and just walking over. read more
