My husband and I went to Anita's for dinner last night. We'd been here once before back in the winter. We found out about this place on accident going to a birthday party next door. The party was running behind so we went to Anita's to eat and kill time. We enjoyed the food and there was a really nice live band playing the night we ate there. We decided to go back last night and had a very different experience. The food was good, but the service and atmosphere was horrible! You have to go to the the register to place your order and pay and they bring the food to your table. I also had to go to the front to ask for water. They bought out a little plastic hospital pitcher of water and sat it on the table. My husband wanted to order a beer, but you can't order a beer at the register you have to order from the guy that brings your food out(if you can catch him). I heard the table next to us asking questions to one of the girls that bought out their drinks about drinks in which they were told the words "I don't know" several times. She did go in the back to ask, but the staff doesn't seem knowledgeable about the menu and drinks at all. The last thing is the food took forever! My husband had gumbo and I had a seafood boil. I also lied when I said the last thing.... The seafood in the boil was good, but the overcooked corn on the cob and mushy potatoes were horrible. I've had better service at McDonald's and it didn't cost $54 dollars. read more

I just ate reheated gumbo and it was amazing! The portion size was great. I ate two helpings and my fiancé ate two helpings all from the full size serving. The seafood in the gumbo was plentiful. The taste of the roux was flavorful but not spicy which was a plus for me. I didn't go get the food but my fiancé said the people were pleasant. Let me start off by saying I love gumbo, so I was really excited to try this place out. Unfortunately, the excitement stops there. I went to Anita's the other night & ordered the signature gumbo. THANK GOD I didn't pay $20 for a full order (which in itself is ridiculous),because it was mostly chicken. I had maybe 3 little shrimp, a few pieces of sausage, 2 oblong things that resembled no scallop I've ever eaten & they were tough & no signs of any crabmeat. When it first opened it was called Anita's Gumbo and it was stellar. We would purchase the Signature Gumbo and it would have scallops, huge shrimp, plenty of okra, and real crab legs, not to mention the countless amount of chicken breast and the roux was delicious; so much so I would request additional cornbread muffins just to dip! After a while we noticed slight changes and received some foul crab legs and decided to take a break but it was so good we decided to give them another try after a long hiatus. Last week we ordered our usual fare and it was completely and utterly disappointing! Not only are the shrimp small, there was only one piece of okra in each of our Signature Gumbos, there were no scallops, still plenty of chicken...probably because it's cheap, hints of andouille sausage that was more like your average smoked sausage from your local neighborhood corner store, and the crab meat, YES MEAT, no legs, was in a small plastic container normally reserved for ketchup! Lastly, the roux had been reduced to a dried gravy like substance, gone was the juice that did my tastebuds proud...corn muffins were the best thing but you really didn't need them sans roux! Needless to say WE.ARE.DONE!!! I guess since they dropped the "A" the quality went with it! read more

Heard about Anita's from my friend and since she was in my neighborhood, I gave her a try and I am sooo glad I did. Her signature gumbo is authentic, hearty, and delicious! My hubby had the gumbolaya and my friend had a tangy shrimp po boy, which was all delicous. Her service was courteous and they had my food was ready when they said it would be time. Decided to try this since they had a booth set up @ The South Side Soul Festival. I tried the Gumbo Wings & The Seafood Gumbo. The wings were nothing more than the wings having been "soaked" in the roux. I didn't particularly care for them The Gumbo was pretty tasty however they probably should turn down the spice. It has a "kick" that will be too much for some people. Overall I would buy the Gumbo again but not the wings read more

My coworkers and I decided to try the gumbolaya and we really enjoyed it. It wasn't too spicy, but I it had a kick to it. I had the shrimp and the only problem I had was there weren't enough veggies, but the portion was adequate for the price. My coworkers all had the chicken. They loved it. So far everything I've had from here is delisious. the Carribean Gumbo, the buttermilk wings, the gumbo wings, the shrimp and chicken gumbolaya, the sweet potatoe pie, the gumbo rice, all of it! The lunch specials are a great deal and a great option to try some higher priced menu options or only $6.50. Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner..... As a native from the Bayou state, I know my gumbo. It was positively delish, large pieces of snow crab legs and clusters, along with andouille, plump shrimp, and sea scallops....hubba hubba. In addition, the young man making the delivery was extremely mannerly, which in todays age is delightful. I ordered several items as I wanted to try a bit of this, that, and the other and I was not disappointed. The wings, both bw and gumbo were a tasty bit of joy. Needless to say, I highly recommend Nita's and I will most definitely be a repeat customer. First time here and ordered the Friday lunch special which consisted of 4 wings, gumbolya, and can soda for a little over $7 (great value)! Customer service was great! The gumbolaya was awesome, full of flavor and consistency was perfect. My only issue was with the wings, tasty but were not meaty. Let's start off with the positive. It is surely a pleasure to see a black-owned establishment that opens on time. I called the restaurant 15 minutes before their scheduled opening time and they answered the phone. I actually first learned about Anita's from the huge billboard on the Dan Ryan. After that all that publicity it was actually not the easiest to find. The signage isn't highly visible. It's on a corner of a tightly packed strip mall. On to the gumbo.. It was salty and overall just okay. My major issue was with the process at Anita's. -First the staff was not very accommodating: I requested to have rice and gumbo separated because I was counting carbs. I was told that this is not an option with the lunch special and they try to avoid customizations. The cashier. then added that they used to serve separately but customers reported that this was too cumbersome. Hmmm, Okay while I can appreciate that... This customer is requesting rice on the side. Oh well says Anita's, no can do, you have to order the 1/2. This essentially means no lunch special for me because I want rice &gumbo separate ... This is clearly because they want to give you a smaller portion and fill the container with mostly rice. Thats understandable because lunch options are generally smaller, so putting my rice and gumbo in 2 separate small containers seemed likes the obvious solution, but not to Anita's. Smh I won't be back because I wasn't wowed by the food and I was irritated with the service. First time, all the food was good. Got a chicken gumbo and the fried shrimp was sooo good.

Well, I have not been back to Nita's Gumbo since mid-July and will NEVER patronize the place again!! On July 22, 2017, I had the worst experience out of a recent string of bad experiences with them. I must quickly point out that I had been a frequent customer, and my only complaint was I could never place a phone order because no one would answer the phone (two friends of mine had the same problem and thus, refused to spend money there). In my passion to support our businesses, I ignored the signs. This all changed during the week leading up to July 22nd. On the 19th, 20th and the morning of the 22nd, I called Nita's gumbo to place an order for enough gumbo wings to feed a party of thirty (60th surprise birthday party). No one answered, OR called me back! Desperate, I drove to the establishment, twice, the morning of the party (10am and 11:30 am). Both times I found the store's security shutters pulled down and locked. I called a couple more times and finally, around 12:15pm, someone answered. I told her about their phone problem, and asked why the store was closed. No response, so I tried to place my order. It was then that I heard a female's voice in the background say, "We are closed, we don't open until one o'clock!" My contact then attempted to tell me to call back at 1 pm to place my order. I told her would not do that because no one answers the phone. I explained that I could come back there if I have to but I need to get this order placed. I then asked how long would it take to prepare. She said about an hour. She then said: "Sir, I really can't talk right now, but I promise I will call you back at one o'clock." That call never came. So, at 1:30 I had to call them. This time, I realized that I had reached the female voice I heard talking in the background earlier. I told her I was promised a call back so I could place an order for gumbo wings. This lady proceeded to lecture me on the company's policy regarding advance notice for catering orders. She scolded me about how they require a minimum of 48 hours (totally ignoring my complaints about unanswered phone calls days prior). Because I was not in a position to debate with her I said, "That is not what I was told." I hung up. I moved to a private location and called back. The same woman answered the phone and immediately placed me on hold. She didn't ask, just barked hold for a moment. I held on for over nine minutes. I hung up and called back. This time I received the original associate I talked to. I asked to speak to a manager. She told me, "She's kinda busy right now." I said, "what did you say?" She replied, "hold for moment." I held for nearly 7 minutes. I hung up and called for the last time. A male associate answered. I told him, "Tell your manager I know what kind of game is going on here. I have spent too much money with Nita's Gumbo to be treated like bullshit. I will be taking my experiences to facebook, google and yelp. Good bye." The sad truth is that despite the horrific parking (totally nonexistent) and poor customer service, I continued to patronize them. Perhaps, that's my fault. read more
