A relative told is about a Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant in Roseville, and our response was, "No way!" So, we decided to give it a try on our way home in a road trip. We got there in the late afternoon on a weekday, so it wasn't crowded. The hostess have us some great recommendations on tacos and cocktails. The servers were very helpful and spent time explaining the stories behind the food and restaurant. The tacos were delicious, and the guacamole was fresh and also tasty. I really like the corn tortillas, but the server said they is hot are ordering takeout, the floor tortillas may hold up better with the sauce. We had the churros for dessert, and they were crispy instead of soft. Since I like old-fashioned donuts, I enjoyed the dessert, but just be aware that it's different then most churros. If you are on I-80 on a road trip, Nixtaco is a great place to stop and eat. Well, So many five star Yelp reviews teed up my expectations for a superior, tasty and surprisingly good meal. And my 3 tacos, beans, cocktail and flan was way below those expectations. Truly I was not really happy about the meal. Busy, boisterous, loud and festive capacity crowd in the dining room had me primed for a party-in-the-mouth. Everyone looked so very happy. My big complaint: The pork belly, chicken in mole', and house special Nixtaco combination all tasted the same. Dark, smoky, mysterious and kind'a boring. You know I get it, that this regional menu is Oaxacan cuisine. Even the bowl of beans I ordered as an extra had the same mole' dark smoky flavor. Tacos are wet & saucy enough that the blue corn tortillas melted and fell apart after the first bite. Pancho Villa Negroni cocktail is tart. Tasted no different than any generic Italian one. At $19 this signature small 3 ounce cocktail with the giant cube of ice conceals how small the drink is, for the price it's a rip off. Highlight of the meal was the creamy rich and thick flan. I shared it with my wife and a friend. The girls had one bite each and they were done. Michelin Bib Gourmand awards regardless, there are many small family owned Mexican eateries around Roseville where I've enjoyed much better meals. This was my second time visiting Nixtaco and I am left super happy. I visited on a Thursday evening and it was very packed, thankfully there was one table that just opened up as we arrived so we did not have to wait long. However, it was about a 5-8 minute wait just to be greeted, but with a busy crowd it wasn't a bother to me. They offer inside and outside seating, their outside patio is small but still has a cute vibe. T They are located in Roseville, on cirby way. Nixtaco offers quality ingredients and fresh made tortillas with all your tacos. I absolutely love their "farm to fork" concept and can taste the quality and flavors in each bite. Not to mention how impressed I was with their chefs special margarita, the best I've tried in a while! Hands down some of the best tacos I have ever had. For most tacos that I've had, the tortilla is just a vehicle for the meat and other ingredients j side, but not here. The homemade tortillas boast such a wonderful flavor and texture that I'd consider them a main ingredient too. So much so that I bought a pack of tortillas to take home. My barbacoa taco was juicy and flavorful, with the avocado adding a great complementary texture. The pollo en mole taco was equally excellent, with the house made crema pairing nicely. Of the vegetarian tacos, the cauliflower was my favorite due to the diversity of textures and of course the excellent taste. I've heard it gets pretty busy and difficult to get a table, but we came on Memorial Day for lunch and we're able to walk in. Imagine it isn't like that for dinner. The salsas were tasty and presented nicely, in ascending order of spiciness. We were so full that we couldn't even order dessert, despite our desires. All the staff were friendly and helpful. This unassuming restaurant is located in a residential neighborhood strip mall. I wouldn't have ventured out to find this place but it was recommended by a relative who absolutely loves it. When we arrived the staff was welcoming and friendly. Our waiter gave recommendations on favorite drinks and tacos to order. We started with guacamole and chips and each ordered three tacos to try. The guacamole was good but not my favorite since there was a bit too much lime for my taste. My husband enjoyed it though. Of the three tacos I tried, my favorite taco was the Nixtaco Combination. This is a definite must try! There was so much flavor going on in this taco. The shrimp was saucy and delicious with the Rajan con Queso, chicharron and the added peanut chipotle aioli. The second favorite taco was the fried chicken which had a nice crunch and paired nicely with the peanut chipotle. The third taco I tried was the Quesabirria and came with a side of the beef drippings. One thing that stands out with all the tacos was the fresh corn tortillas which had a good thickness and were so soft. We finished our meal with an order of churros. These were sadly underwhelming. We came here during the weekend no reservations. So we came in as a walk in . The lady in the front said it would be an hour. We would normally sit at the bar but I had my son with me . After waiting outside we went back in to ask again about the time . A sweet waiter sat us down but not in the normal area it was passing the kitchen . They have a whole other room. We both really enjoyed the assortment of salsas served with chips to start the meal off, the salsa verde was probably one of the best I have ever tried. We decided to order 5 tacos, and our favorites were definitely the pork belly, al pastor, spicy shrimp, and carne asada. The tacos were SO flavorful and unique. We also had tried the short rib barbacoa, but it wasn't my cup of tea. The service was quick and attentive, and we also decided to order churros for dessert. The churros had a bit too much sugar on them for my liking, but I'm glad we tried it anyhow. We probably wouldn't get the barbacoa taco and churros a second time to be honest. Busy inside and out, but we were seated immediately inside, which is very loud. Server came over fairly quickly to take our drink order. I ordered a mango margarita at $14. Hardly any mango in the drink at all. The chips and salsas here are pretty good. 4 different salsas and heat levels. Liked them all. Food - I ordered a cremini mushroom taco and a spicy shrimp taco. The mushroom taco was very boring and one note in flavor. One tiny slice of avocado on top. The spicy shrimp taco was the most bland shrimp I have ever eaten! Yes they were fresh, but absolutely not one bit of spice on the shrimp! Also the cheese was missing as well. I told the server about the shrimp taco and that she should tell the kitchen. I was just ignored. Hubby ordered the flan and it was very good. Very thick flan, not the normal bouncy flan you would normally see. But tasty. Hubby's cocktail was $19 - ridiculous. Well, this was a surprising find in Roseville! Nixtaco is our new go-to place for tacos in the area. They have a great selection of tacos, and everything is home made and made to order. I love that they offer flour tortillas in addition to corn. I tried the picodillo, al pastor, and the salsa verde pollo tacos. All three were awesome, but the picodillo was my favorite; very flavorful. My husband and dad both really enjoyed the chicharones taco, and my sister liked the spicy shrimp. We ordered to-go. you have to order online through their Toast web ordering, and there are ways to make modifications to the tacos on the platform. I do wish that we could have just called to order though. Another downside is that if you get takeout, you have to pay for the salsa. When you dine in, it is free. I think that $1 for a tiny thing of salsa is silly. The inside of the restaurant is smaller, and definitely fills up. I would recommend making a reservation if you're going on a Friday or weekend to ensure you don't have to wait too long. We will be back to try more! read more

Do not spend you your money here! My son and I heard about this place. We were told the food was delicious and the place was Michelin recognized. Impossible. We went inside and the hostess greeted us right away. It was super dark (like night club dark) and we asked to sit outside. A server came promptly, said hello and that they were going on break but someone would be by to take our order. 15 minutes later someone showed up. My son had already made his way through the small bowl of chips they provided along with a flight of four salsas: tomatillo (flavorless), creamy peanut based (weird...peanuts with chips), tomato salsa (standard, tasted like another restaurants honestly) and one that was supposed to be "very hot" (no heat or flavor). When we finally ordered, I got three tacos: potato, cauliflower and birria. My son ordered the carnitas in a burrito (you can get tacos as burritos here). The food came dripping in oil. My son's burrito looked like a big taco, just a burrito shell folded over. He said it lacked any flavor and the consistency was like baby food. I had the tacos. The potato was flavorless (anyone know how to use salt here), and dry. The cauliflower has some gross, smoky sauce that made it inedible to eat so I just ate the cauliflower, and the birria? I took one bite. Absolutely no flavor....none and dripping with grease. So we spend $39.88 for 3 tacos, a burrito, 2 small bowls of chips and horrible service (no one ever came back after our food was delivered, we saw our server walking back into the building on his phone on our way to the car). I actually had to just go inside and ask the hostess to check us out because no one came back. She asked if everything was ok as I already paid and had my hand on the door to leave. This place is wonderful. It was quite obvious why they have achieved a Michelin rating over several years. Four of us tried it on a last-minute lark, although we did make a reservation for dinner, and we're glad we did as the restaurant was packed. We were seated immediately, and the place isn't all that big. It's in a strip mall shopping center, and it was bustling with activity and hungry diners, a very distinctive energy abounds. Water was delivered right away, as were chips and a variety of four salsas... all excellent with a different level of spicy 'kick'. The chips are fried a bit more than I like, with a good crunch, yet they hold up well with the salsa on them. One of the few times chips with salsa didn't drip all over. This is not the typical Tex-Mex style restaurant, like Chili's or Chevy's, with huge platters of food, piled high with rice, beans and whatever, but rather a higher quality offering of primarily tacos and burritos. And, yes, it is pricier at between $5-$7. per taco, yet the superior quality is well worth the value. No, I am not a friend or know the owner or anyone who works here. There was no need for the QR code as a very attentive and patient waiter was most helpful and accommodating. Service throughout was tops, even with the pressure of a busy dinner crowd. We ordered the guacamole, and it was fabulous, fresh, tangy, and delicious with pickled onions on top. More chips came with it... they never missed a beat. Each of us had a beer from a very nice selection. I chose the Living Haus Harris, a pale ale with a nice smooth and bit tart taste, perfect for tacos! What impressed me was that one of us doesn't drink alcohol and when asking about non-alcoholic alternatives, the options were vast and although not listed they will do whatever pleases, including 'mocktails' from the cocktail items listed! They are not adverse to customize, the sign of a quality establishment that isn't cookie cutter. We each ordered three tacos apiece, more than enough food as they are quite hearty. My order consisted of the Pollo en Salsa Verde, Carne Asada, and a Pork Belly "Roadkill". They were all exceptional, different, and very tasty. Each bite was a sheer pleasure and taste treat. All the meat choices were tender, fresh, and perfectly cooked. The accompanied ingredients are a perfect match for each selection. What is truly amazing are the homemade tortillas, some of the best I ever ate, and they held the fillings perfectly. Unlike the usual tacos that either fall apart or everything tumbles out, these soft tacos made with blue tortillas hold their own. This is specifically why I'm not all that fond of tacos, but now I am. OK, I really love this place and will be back. For all those who complain about the prices, to each his or her own... It would make a great date-night spot, though it might not be ideal for larger parties due to the noise level. What struck me, though, was the smell of freshly made tortillas wafting through the restaurant as you walk in--a truly memorable way to be greeted. As for value, I do think it's overpriced. I was drawn to this restaurant because of its current Bib Gourmand distinction in the Michelin Guide, and while the price tags reflect that, I'm not sure I felt like I was experiencing Michelin-worthy food.
