What's in a name... Well here at No Name BBQ Sandwich it's exactly that. Located up in Kaimuki near the corner of Waialae Ave and 8th Ave there isn't any parking (that I know of) but just street parking which is lately impossible for me until I was thinking of visiting neighboring ACE Hardware which ended up being closed...sigh! I did notice what was open along with the street parking right in front of the restaurant. Walking in was interesting to see how spacious the space was where they do have a few seating but is nice and clean and right beside the service counter is the huge menu listing the various sandwiches. Not feeling much for meat I decided on their "Veggie Tofu Sandwich" which comes with all the classic cucumber, pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro and mayo but what's not basic is the sunrise egg which I didn't want as the tofu is enough for me but what a load of veggies it came with as I don't do cilantro but mom did so she had the load and love the generous portion as this single sandwich was totally shareable. We went to No Name BBQ sandwich for dinner tonight. We got there a little before they closed and we were lucky because there was a parking spot right in front. I swear I've passed by this place so many times but never had a chance to try it. Well tonight was the night. We were in the area and my husband wanted something light because we had a heavy lunch. I read the reviews and checked out peoples pictures and it really looked like a great choice for dinner. All of us ordered the BBQ pork sandwich. We were going to eat there but they packaged our food nicely so we just took it to go. The inside of the restaurant is quite small anyways, probably only fit around 5-6 people on tables. I was looking forward to trying No Name as it's an old establishment and one of the common suggestions for best banh mi on island, but it wasn't as satisfying as I'd hoped. It looked like house made bread which was lovely with great crust texture, but the sandwich size was noticeably much smaller than the average banh mi. I got the Vietnamese Special which had pork and pate, and while it definitely had lots of pate, it just wasn't super flavorful to me overall and was pretty chunky. It also didn't have sliced jalapeño inside which I thought was the norm, but maybe you have to ask for it here. The chili sauce they give you is quite flavorful although not very spicy. The BBQ pork had that pleasant fire Charcoal smell and taste. And the Vietnamese sandwich had a strong and creamy taste of pate that marks authenticity. The Sunshine Sandwich with egg and bacon is more of a morning breakfast sandwich. Even the spicy red sauce they gave us was uniquely spicy without toning anything down. It hit the spot. Unfortunately, the wait time from ordering in store to getting the food was a long 25 minutes for 3 sandwiches, and I can see that the 3 people were working hard but inefficiently, stepping over each other. It seemed like this is a family business that could definitely use better management system. Also they were not particularly big on customer service, getting more agitated with more customers walking in, not fluent in the English language could have caused more stress, and their mannerism felt rough. No smiles. Therefore I would definitely order ahead instead of ordering and waiting in the store to reduce face to face interaction and wait time. Always passed by but never had the opportunity to actually try them out until today! Banh Mi was amazing and fresh. You can tell this is a labor of love with how much effort they put into their product. Everything tasted fresh, veggies were seasoned, their bread is not hard so it doesn't end up cutting your mouth when you eat it, and each bite was so satisfying. The Vietnamese sandwich I got was a hit, and my friend's Pork one was delicious as well. Also note, they give you an option for hot sauce on the side. Tried no name for the first time after hearing many people recommend it and it definitely lived up to the hype! Photos of menu items #1 - #10 adorn the walls and instrumental Vietnamese music plays softly in the background making for a pleasant and catchy waiting or eating experience. Seating for around 12 people, although most people do takeout. Would recommend calling ahead to place take out order as all sandwiches are made to order fresh and if you walk in, you will probably have to wait at least 10 to 15 minutes. Located on Waialae Avenue in the building next to Ace Hardware, very unassuming store front with a no frills black and white sign announcing their presence. The Great: Do a few things but do them great is what I think of when I visit, they used to have few other items but now only focus on the Banh Mi. Great ingredients and the bread is amazing. Also get their home made hot sauce, way better then plain sriracha that I normally add to my sandwich. Our go to, wife gets the meatball and I get the Vietnamese because I adore pate, both are piled high with fresh cilantro with just right amount of pickled veggies. The Good: I do wish they'd bring back the spring rolls but that's a minor thing really. The food has always been great and now I'll compare future banh mi's to No Name. The Okay: Sometimes the street parking is limited but circle the block a couple times and you'll find a spot. Walking a couple blocks may also help build up your appetite.
