I've been on the hunt for a good Chinese takeout spot for a while now, so I went into No.1 Chinese with high hopes. I love all styles of Chinese food--from Americanized classics to more traditional dishes--so I was excited to try a range of items. I ordered several dishes to get a good feel for the menu, including sautéed mixed vegetables, egg rolls, steamed dumplings, wonton soup, and sesame chicken. The sautéed mixed vegetables unfortunately missed the mark for me. The sauce was extremely strong and completely overpowered the dish, making it difficult to enjoy. My roommate ended up finishing it and agreed--the sauce was just too intense. The egg rolls were also a bit underwhelming. The wrapper wasn't as crispy as I would've liked, and the filling leaned heavily toward meat without much vegetable balance, which made the flavor feel a bit one-dimensional. The steamed dumplings were better and one of the stronger items we tried, though I think a more flavorful or complementary dipping sauce--and a bit more variety in the filling--would take them to the next level. The wonton soup had a really nice, well-balanced broth, and the wontons themselves were cooked perfectly. That said, the soup felt a little lacking in substance. Adding vegetables like cabbage, carrots, or peas could really round it out and make it more satisfying. The standout of the meal was the sesame chicken. It was well-prepared, flavorful, and came with a good portion of broccoli--though I wouldn't have minded even more. Overall, No.1 Chinese falls somewhere in the middle. Nice to have a respectable Chinese American take out conveniently located in Berry Farms. The hot and sour soup was thick, and had a pleasant kick of heat to it. It was a little shy on chunks of goodies, just had a few sliced mushrooms and bamboo shoots in it, but was still enjoyable, and the large is a nice sized serving to share. The dumplings had a thicker than usual wrapper. They were quite tasty with a nice dipping sauce. Had ordered the fried dumplings, and they had a little bit of burnt flavor from pan frying, so I think we'd go with the steamed next time. The sesame chicken was good sized chunks with a thick crust, and might have been a little overcooked. It made them chewy, which I actually found I didn't mind at all, made the meal a little heartier. I also really liked that the plentiful broccoli was perfectly cooked al dente, and that they had a light hand with the sauce. It was plenty flavorful, and happily not the drowned in overly sweet sauce that the dish comes with at too many other places. Craving for chinese food and this was the closest we could find. They offer typical American-chinese fare. Food was good, we had ordered the salt and pepper shrimp, Hunan beef and house special tofu. The batter on the salt and pepper shrimp was not crispy when we opened it but still tastes pretty good. Hunan beef was listed as spicy, but it was really just a hint of heat. I regret to say that this is not worth trying. I love Asian cuisine, and was looking forward to trying a new potential spot as my new office location is nearby. I called for a To Go order and it was ready quickly, but the food is very bland. Little to no flavor. Dumplings are one of my favorite things to eat, and I order them everywhere. These were some of the worst I've had. They had no flavor or salt to them, and the dipping sauce tasted watered down. The shrimp in garlic sauce had very little flavor and no heat to it. Everything tasted like it was cooked without salt. Even the soy sauce packets tasted like they had no salt. Unfortunately, if no one suggests I go back to try a specific dish that they love, I will probably never eat here again. I recommend driving the extra 5 minutes to go into Franklin for Chinese food. read more

I loved my dinner tonight and I am so happy we discovered this place and gave it a chance! I haven't had Chinese food since I was a kid and what I order was delicious and very healthy!! First off, this is my first visit here and it's nearby my home. It is extremely clean, for any type of restaurant, much less Chinese which can be less than perfect. So this was a welcome surprise. The lady working the cash register was friendly and outgoing. As for the food, the servings were more than ample. The shrimp was fresh and they were large. Veggies were plentiful and fresh. The dumplings, same thing. If I have one gripe, it's not with this restaurant, it's across the board with Chinese and other international dishes. They Americanize it with sauces to make us enjoy what we think it should be. Having traveled extensively to Asia, it would be nice for a restaurant to use more traditional sauces and techniques and give a real reflection of Chinese food. But, as far as American Chinese food goes, this made the grade. read more

I recently tried this Chinese restaurant after eating at many others in Franklin, which were mediocre at best. I got take-out, but they do have inside seating. This restaurant's food was just awesome and fresh. I ordered egg rolls, sweet and sour pork and fried rice. There wasn't one thing that was not good. Most Chinese restaurants I have been to here, or anywhere, have maybe one, or if you are very lucky, two of the things you order that are good, but not the others. That is not the case here. I will have to say that I never like all the rather heavy coating on sweet and sour pork anywhere, so usually I take most of it off, and that was also the case for me here. I just like the taste of the pork, the sweet & sour sauce with just a little coating. Their pork was tender, flavorful, the coating was also good and the sauce was excellent. We particularly like our vegetables to be more crisp rather than mush you find at many other Chinese restaurants. No 1 cooks the vegetables perfectly crisp. Everything is fresh. This was my first visit to this establishment (a Monday evening). The woman who took my order over the phone was very pleasant. She stated my order would be ready in 10 minutes. It was ready and waiting for me when I arrived. Beef with broccoli was excellent. General Tso's chicken had a good flavor but the pieces were on the smaller side and slightly over-cooked (thus only four stars). Delicious egg rolls and crab rangoon. While this won't be our new favorite, this tiny little Chinese place is fine for what it is. I will say the place is exceptionally clean, which is great. Service was exceptionally fast, which is also great. I had the pork lo mein which was comparable to what I get at our "normal" take out Chinese closer to home, hubby had Sweet and Sour Chicken. In his case, it was literally fried chicken nuggets and sweet and sour sauce, along with fried rice. No vegetables, no pineapple, just chicken and sauce... which if we had consulted the large color photograph directly above where you order, we would've known. The fried rice wasn't the best, a little dry and tasted a bit of garlic it seemed. We had an order of crab rangoons, served hot and on par with pretty much any other fast Chinese place around. You get 8 of them, so it's a generous order. Yes, they only do bottle drinks, not fountain like another yelper said. We commented on how if you were just starting out, like they obviously are here, they do everything disposable (I'm sure 90% of their business is to go anyway), and doing just fountain drinks eliminates the need for cups, an ice machine, and a dispenser that you have to clean. Glass front frig, and they're good. The tables and chairs were very comfy - on the modern side and leather parsons style chairs - it's a tiny little dining room. We really enjoy Berry Farms and wanted to try them out, and if the occasion arose we would go back with friends or something, but hubby was definitely order differently. I was so looking forward to this place opening because it is close to the house. After trying it once, I will still drive further to Asian Taste on Murfreesboro Road instead. This place doesn't offer fountain drinks, therefore you can't even save money by getting water. They make you buy water bottles. The service was really fast which was good. The rice was not good at all and really dry. I wasn't even offered white rice as they brought out dry brown rice...I wouldn't even call it fried rice. I always eat all the rice and both my son and I tossed out most of the rice. The curry chicken and beef & broccoli was pretty decent. I really liked the dumplings.
