    105. General Tso's Vegetable Chicken

I just ordered a bunch of stuff from NO1 Chinese, which has been my go to place for some broccoli. Here's what I got this time: 1. 10 piece fried Chinese donuts: an absolute MUST!!! While this is a pretty standard item it is always sooo delicious and decadent. Beautiful, simple, perfection. 2. Egg roll vegetable: this is actually just fried spring rolls there is no egg. It was fine. 3. Diet Steamed Broccoli with side garlic sauce: the broccoli was cooked well and still nicely crunchy. I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce but it wasn't bad. I love the broccoli. 4. Vegetarian "chicken" with general tso sauce: the sauce was very good, the vegetarian chicken had a nice flavor but it was very chewy and hard to eat. I think I'll stick with the tofu next time. 5. Szechuan tofu: the tofu was cut into strips and triangle shapes which was different but tasty. The sauce was okay. I think I would have preferred to get it on the side. 6. French fries: AMAZING!!! I don't know if they were running low on the shoestring shape fry and mixed it with the crinkle cut but having a combination of fry shapes in one order was one of the greatest pleasures imaginable. If this is a consistent thing from them then I would order the fries every single time! Overall I had a good experience trying all these different dishes from NO1 Chinese and I think the restaurant makes a great go-to staple food location.

I stopped by for lunch doing my neighborhood traveler thing trying new restaurants and this was the place today. The place is small with about three tables in the front windows and the menu is big with all the usual offerings. The place has Christmas decorations hanging from the ceilings and is divish looking. As with most Asian places I visit it's empty and take out is all that's going on with the phones ringing and orders taken. I was back and forth with the Mongolian Beef lunch special or the Singapore chow Mein fun on the menu and the Mongolian Beef lost and I got an order of pork egg rolls. The food was cooked to order fast/hot and I was on my way in 10 minutes. The egg rolls were the smaller ones of today's kind with a golden crunchy shell with mostly veggies in it and just average. The Singapore chow Mein fun is a spicy/curry thin noodles dish with shrimp, chicken and pork basically. The dish had just the right amount of chicken, pork and shrimp so it didn't seem skimpy and spiced nicely. The noodled were cooked perfectly with some firmness left in them with that curry/spicy flavor. Overall this place didn't dethrone my favorite Singapore noodles spot and it was not bad but just average and it didn't really wow me and I'm not saying it's bad at all. I have certain places for known good dishes that are the bench mark that all others are judged by.

This is a fabulous local restaurant. The takeout is tasty and quick. We love their egg drop soup! Tonight when I was there, two young men waited on me. They were very friendly and helpful. Even in giving them a 100% tip (well-deserved!) the bill was less than $10. Love this restaurant. Our go-to for Chinese takeout.

Wow they have the balls to somehow edit my actual review. You guys sold me a uncooked chicken dish. Then denied that my order even contained meat. Seriously... There are way better Asian options around here. Avoid this place.

The restaurant is in a tucked away strip mall and is modest in size and decor. The strip mall also contains hidden treasures like a Chinese bakery/BBQ and an Asian store. We went early on a Saturday evening with friends. The service was excellent, although with some staff there were language hurdles. No matter - everyone made it work and we were left with an abundance of amazing food at a reasonable price. Wine and beers are served, as well as smoothies and other non-alcoholic drinks. BF ordered crab rangoon as a starter, which was good. He liked it more than I did, but it was nice and crispy. I just didn't think it compared to other dishes. My vegetable egg roll was very good as well, but nothing terribly unique. He went bold on the entree and ordered the pork intestine and blood cake dish. He really enjoyed it and said it was quite spicy. The portions are generous and he did bring a lot home. I ordered the homestyle tofu, which normally has pork. I got it without to make it vegetarian friendly. The textures were very good and the sauce was intensely flavorful, but mild. I also ordered a supplementary dish of braised mushrooms and Shanghai greens. Everyone at the table enjoyed this dish, particularly the greens, which are a variety of bok choy, called pac choy. The mushrooms were wonderful, with the texture of wood ears. I also had plenty of leftovers to eat the next day. Our friends ordered the Szechuan spicy pork dumplings and they got rave reviews. My cousin did say they were not overly spicy. She went on to order the sizzling black pepper beef, which she said was good, but not nearly as unique or deeply flavored as the other dishes. Her husband ordered the pork intestine with clear noodles, which he enjoyed but said was extremely spicy. He did leave a lot of sauce behind since it was so hot. He also had the ox tendon and maw in spicy sauce, which came with chopped peanuts on top. He seemed really pleased with that dish. We agreed that we would happily go back to explore the menu more. Everything was excellent and I thought the prices were generally quite reasonable, especially for the quantity of food. I do wish the menu had more descriptive text, so I could familiarize myself with the dishes. The choices are many and overwhelming and the menu is huge. I'd also love to see a symbol for vegetarian options since it's very hard to know otherwise and many of the vegetable dishes included pork or other meat. As we left the restaurant was getting increasingly busy with people waiting by the door for seats. This is a popular place for good reason.

The Spicy Pork Dumplings have become my go-to appetizer, and the fried spring rolls are also very good. On a most recent visit, we ordered hot pot. Our server brought us the sheet to make our selections. You can choose from mild broth, spicy broth, or half tray of each. The spicy is pretty hot with lots of red chili peppers soaking in it, so I scooped out the chili peppers to keep rhe flavor but lessen the impact on my palate. For 2 guests, I recommend choosing 3 items from the list, maybe 2 protein and one veggie or 2 veggie and one protein to start. You can order more if you finish and need more. This is in addition to the two appetizers you will choose, which is included with rhe hot pot dinner. It's a great value! Sze Chuan remains on my short list of go-to's for Chinese dining, and I look forward to my next visit, whenever that may be.

There seemed to be no one working at the host/hostess station by the door or at the bar. We had to wait several minutes before someone noticed us to seat us. The chicken pad thai was a HUGE portion and looked/smelled incredible. I definitely want to try this in the future. The waiter was nice and attentive without being annoying. For a chain, I think the food is pretty dang amazing and the menu is quite extensive. I would recommend PF Chang's over the foot court any day!

On entering the restaurant the hostess was nowhere to be found and two servers unfamiliar with the role tried to get me a table. Once seated I waited for 10 minutes for a server to approach me and ask for my order. A bit surprising in that the dining room probably seats 125+ and there were only 17 patrons eating or being served. Things did pick up as I was finishing my meal, perhaps they had just opened service for the evening. I ordered an appetizer, Dynamite Shrimp ($14.29) and it arrived quickly. It consisted of 10 medium sized fried shrimp on a bed of lettuce, carrots and cabbage, lightly and unevenly covered with a spiced sauce. The shrimp were nicely cooked and the sauce imparted a kick of heat. I ordered the Chang's chicken ($18.29) for my entree and an order of Chili Garlic Green Beans. ($9.29) which came with a serving of brown rice. The chicken dish was good, spicy but a bit oily. The green beans were delicious. My server was attentive, checking in on me and refilled my soda ($4.29). All in all the food was good but a bit on the expensive side coming to $60 with tax and tip. Food was plentiful so I left with enough for a second meal at home. My impression is that Chang's is still a quality choice for an evening meal.

But with these last past 2 deliveries I can't support any eatery who essentially steals from customers. I had to order through Doordash because their driver only serviced Wauwatosa residents. And with the 1st order they totally forgot my almond cookies. On the order the next day, they did send the cookies, but went and billed me an extra $4.47 because I requested sweet & sour sauce to go along with the 2 orders of Chinese fried chicken sticks that I had paid for. I was thinking I'd be receiving a container of their homemade sweet & sour sauce (they advertise this on the menu for $4), that's why I didnt make a biggie about it. But then I get the bag and inside there's like 10 of those generic packs of sweet sour sauce. Like WTH! These should have automatically came with chicken sticks. Shouldn't have to pay almost $5 extra dollars for those. And both of their soups, the chicken noodle & wonton was near the spoiling stage & not very good at all. And $9 for a quart of soup when it was mostly noodles. Oh c'mon on. The Almond cookies where they used to give 5, for like $1.25, now you only get 2 of them for a whopping $2.50. What is going on? And they were soft and wet, with a strange texture. They used to be flavorful and crispy. Just ashame that a once great Chinese take-out has succumbed to this low level. One redeeming quality that they do possess, is whoever answers their phones (I've spoken with a man and a lady) are really patient, polite and nice. And that does go a long way when running a restaurant. I'll give them an extra star for that. However, I just can't get past my last experience & won't be ordering again.
