I'm very surprised this place is in business at this time. Came in and no customers inside which should have giving me red flags right away. Floors and restaurant seemed dirty. Looked under our table We ordered beef rolls, pork soup dumplings, bbq pork Bao buns. They asked if we wanted "special soup" - which tasted like watered down chicken noodle soup with small pork wontons. The beef rolls came out and i was shocked to see a cold flour tortilla, lettuce and beef rolled up like a taco. This is no where near a beef roll and was informed they do it differently. They kindly removed it from our bill. I believe they have recently changed their name to dumpling house. Or maybe they have recently changed from dumpling house to Yamato sushi house. I'm not sure which. Their sign out front says dumpling house and their menu still says Yamato sushi house. Identity crisis, no? We went in thinking this was dumpling house so we ordered dumplings. I was craving some soup, dumplings, and shrimp hao gaos. At around 13 bucks each, they were quite good. And just because I don't quite feel full with having just dumplings for dinner, we also ordered their fried rice noodles. The pictures really don't do justice for this amazing dish. They don't have fried rice on their menu, but this noodle dish tasted just like fried rice And smelled like it too. Hubby and I were really pleasantly surprised. We added a chicken to the dish, but if coming back, I will stay with just a noodles without adding protein. Our server who was Chinese, spoke very fast, and I had a hard time understanding everything he was trying to explain. But he was very eager, very nice, and very excited about us trying different foods. As it was Chinese New Year's week when we went in, he told us to try their special New Year's soup and that he was really really good. In fact, he was saying this to everyone who came in. The soup was about $13, but not big like a bowl of pho. It came in the medium size bowl, clear broth, with a bunch of mini dumplings inside. It's really not something that I would normally order, especially after ordering two orders of dumplings, but I must say the taste was pretty good. Would I have it again? I will have to remember not to get pushed over by the nice enthusiastic server. Since we didn't know, this was a sushi place going in. I had no sushi and don't necessarily think I will. The menu is literally half from the previous restaurant which makes it seem like the whole menu is somewhat of a second thought? All of the food was mid. Maybe 3/5. BBQ pork buns were very average, the buns themselves were tasteless like styrofoam. The xiao long bao were small with not a lot of broth in them. The sauces to dip had weird sediment in them. The chow mein was not special tasting, seemed like it could've been frozen from Costco. Short noodles that are soggy and overcooked. The sushi was fine, nothing special. The owner? Or whoever was taking our order came every 2 minutes to ask us if we were ready to order even after we requested some more time because there was a lot of random stuff on the long menu. There was also a 20% tip included in the check for our 6 person table which wasn't mentioned to us. Overall, poor experience. Date of visit: December 9, 2024 I needed a place open on a Monday for lunch in the western Wauwatosa-area, not an easy feat! I came across Dumpling House and was glad that I did, as it was an overall great meal. The place was deserted, save for one other table, but that didn't bother us. The club music soundtrack was an interesting and unexpected addition to the meal, though neither I nor my boss minded it. They were known for their dumplings, so of course we got those. Outside of the burping I did after the meal, they were quite tasty. My chicken teriyaki was decent; didn't love the bed of onions that it came on (definitely should have mentioned that on the menu) but other than that, it had a good flavor and the chicken tasted fresh. I've been here twice now and ordered different things each time. This time around, I got a few other things to try. I started with the marinated beef, which came with a side of hoisin, I believe. The waitress let me know of a special going on with a soup. I can't remember the name, but it was delicious. I don't see it on a menu, so I believe it was limited time. It was a tasty broth with some dumplings. Very good. I got a roll with crab, avocado, cream cheese, eel sauce, and shrimp tempura for sushi. It's not on the online menu but on the physical one. Lastly, I got the stir-fried noodle with shrimp for my entree. I love thin rice noodles, so I had to try them here. Delicious! Staff is always kind and food comes out quick. read more

My wife and I often have lunch here. It's a mash up of sushi and Chinese that seldom disappoints. There are not a lot of people there because it is in the back parking area of a strip mall. The place looks to be in need of some TLC and feels like it used to be something very different when it opened, maybe a night club or bar. And, the service is spotty and often surly. It seems like the negative reviews come from a certain type of person who is not familiar with this type of food, but this place is the real deal. Delicious, authentic dumpling-focused northern Chinese cuisine with friendly, fast service. Prices are acceptable, restaurant isn't the most fancy, but it is comfortable and peaceful. The kitchen is.. particularly authentic, which is a polite way to put it. I can see why this place turns some people off, but we've enjoyed every single meal we've had here and we would absolutely return. Don't be afraid to ask your server for recommendations as some of the wording can be a little confusing. Also, make sure you ask for dumpling sauce (black vinegar) if you weren't provided with any. Stopped by Dumpling House on an early Saturday evening for dinner. It was early enough in the evening (5:30ish) that the dinner crowd hadn't arrived yet, so it was just my dining companion and I and a couple other occupied tables. We started things off with drinks. I ordered a Manhattan and my dining companion opted for a beer. Though I ordered a Manhattan, I received a French Martini (which was a shock to the taste buds as by the color, I didn't notice right away that it wasn't a Manhattan!). When I was in my early 30's, French Martinis were my jam. They were my go-to order so, while it wasn't what I ordered--I did appreciate the opportunity to reminisce a bit! We ordered their bbq pork buns to share and for my main, I got their teriyaki salmon. The pork buns were solid and the teriyaki salmon was delish. It was perfectly cooked and came with ample sauteed vegetables. It was bursting with flavor. My dining companion got the chicken teriyaki which came and was such a large portion, she was able to take half home. Their prices are reasonable ($7.95 for cocktails? The buns were frozen food. We ordered the beef slices as appetizer but it is as thin as a piece of paper and most of lettuce is in the plate. Fried chicken was over cooked so it was super "hard". God I love dumpling house- I was recently in the east coast for a wedding where I ate my fill in lobster rolls and oysters and when I was back to the Midwest I was CRAVING Asian food, and Dumpling House always hits the spot. The inside hasn't really changed from Yamato, and in fact the whole Yamato menu is available, they've just added dumplings and buns. We started with pork wontons in chili oil - just no. The sauce had nothing to do with chili oil at all. It was a slightly sweet peanut butter glaze with very little heat. I wasn't expecting peanut sauce and wouldn't have ordered them had I known. If you love peanut butter you might feel differently. My husband had a volcano roll that he described as "ok". It didn't look like much in the presentation department. Finally, the xiao long bao which are made in house. The dumpling skins were light and delicate, and the pork filling was really good. There was very little broth though, and it lacked that porky unctuous-ness - it was thin and again, a little sweet. Not bad at all, but Momo Mee is way better. Service was great - lightning fast! We enjoyed the juicy dumplings and meat buns that were fresh and hot out of kitchen here. The Xiaolongbao with the specialty house-made dumpling sauce had meat soup inside the thin dough and the sauce really gave them a nice sweet garlic kick. Highly recommend it. The chicken popcorns were crispy and not very salty so tasted good to us who prefer lighter seasoning. The leek and pork buns and shrimp and pork dumplings were less impressive but still tasted homey. The shrimp and pork dumplings even had real shrimp on top - which is no traditional as the shrimp is usually mixed into the pork to create a slightly seafood taste and I personally would have enjoyed that traditional flavor more. But still, we enjoyed the freshness here. They also sell frozen cooked meat buns if you want to get a bunch to take home. We steamed and ate them in the morning and loved the juicy and yummy breakfast. read more

I love bao and dumplings. Unfortunately this was not the place to find them. Very disappointing. It is in the old Yamato restaurant. I had a menu from there with a few new pages added. My friend I ordered dumplings to share. Part of our order was lost but at least we wetr not charged for it. It was very pricey for what we got. It was really hot but we got no sauces or real plates. The bao was not good tasting, it tasted old. I have made it and eaten it out and should be fresh. The other dumplings were so hot and liquid came burning our fingers. I hope it was soup. We had to ask for our credit card as the waiter forgot to give it back. The bathrooms were out of paper and soap. Luckily we carry that with us. Overall it was terrible. I don't think they even wroth for 1star. We ordered 2 different buns, xiao long bao, marinated beef, sashimi plate and popcorn chicken. Marinated Beef that shows up on our table are thin as paper! Mostly lettuce on the bottom, and very small plate. Really don't think it's worth this price! Totally different than the picture whoever posted on the reviews. Popcorn chicken is the same. Everything is small pieces, even thought the onion and green peppers. Cut everything as small as fingernail! We even asked if the plate is popcorn chicken, and he said yes! That's totally different than the picture I the menu too. He even kept convincing us to order the soup that not on the menu. At the beginning we told him not, but he still told us we need to try. Keep back and forth, we said yes. In China, soup is sharing, it usually comes in a big pot. We worried it will be too much and we already ordered quite a few things. But then come with a bowl of dumping in the soup. I was shocked when I saw that. That not even called soup. The table is small, we are trying to finish our food faster and make some room to not be crowded. But no one took our empty plates. Bad service I ever had. Sashimi plate are also expensive and sashimi are thin and small, portions are disappointing too. The whole meal that we had today is worse and upset. I feel like I paid a lots to be sad. read more

Date night. Tried a new spot I've been eying. Food was mediocre Chinese food. The soup dumplings were the only thing that stood out. We grabbed marinated beef, did not expect a cold dish. Reminded me of beef that is used in pho. Got fried shrimp, nice large shrimp and crispy fried goodness. Also got popcorn chicken, light breading, on the salty side. Also got the fried rice and added chicken. This was decent. I'd have to rank the meal overall 5/10. There's better spots for Chinese food, but I'd go back only for the soup dumplings. We've been here about 5x now and have enjoyed every visit! I came across it after going to Taiwan and South Korea last fall and got home craving dumplings and was surprised to see this was right near our house! They're always very friendly, there's a good variety between dumplings, sushi, tempura, and udon and the staff is helpful in explaining things I'm curious in trying. My favorite item is the long bao pork dumplings which have soup in the inside. I had these in Taiwan and was so happy to have them again! Give it a try! read more

Overall, pretty good and definitely would come back, but only for some select dishes. For context, we've been looking for good Xiao Long Bao / Shanghai soup dumplings in Milwaukee for a while now and also the more impossible to find Sheng Jian bao / Pan-fried soup dumplings. I'm sure people that love soup dumplings know there's limited options here and I can say that this definitely hits the spot for soup dumplings but it misses for the pan-fried variant. Their soup dumplings had a great porky/savory flavor, a good amount of soup, and the skin was pretty thin too. We got the pork and crab ones and preferred the pork ones as we didn't feel the extra expense for the crab added anything extra. When we come back, this will definitely be the thing we get, especially since it's not as busy and close to the Zoo. The sleeper hit was the popcorn chicken. It had a light breading, good crunch, and was a nice salty bite. I could definitely see it go well with a beer. It's similar to the Taiwanese popcorn chicken but maybe a little lighter breading. Again, another dish we'll get again. Here are the other dishes we got and will probably pass on: - Pork potstickers - Veg and Pork Steamed Dumplings - Pan-friend pork buns (Sheng Jian Bao) - BBQ Pork Bun - Beef Roll The pork potstickers were just ok. I would have preferred them to be even crispier but the main thing that threw me off was their filling. While there's a lot of filling and it is very juicy, the filling is a bit too soy sauce forward, so you didn't really get to taste the meat and other ingredients. I think if they made some tweaks to the filling, this would be amazing. Same goes for the veg and pork steam dumplings. The skin was a bit underdone too. Anyways, I think you can just buy better frozen ones and make them at home. The Pan-fried pork buns were meh. Even though this is the only place I know of in Milwaukee that has them, I'd still pass on them. The dough is more yeasty and bready, so it's not like the ones you get in Shanghai. Flavor is okay, but it's more just a pan fried smaller pork bao than anything else. The BBQ pork bun was just meh as well. The filling could have been sweeter, but the bao part was too mealy and not soft and airy like other places. Again, I think you can get these better elsewhere and even frozen from the store too. Lastly, the beef roll was just okay. It had lettuce for some crunch but the flavor was mainly dominated by hoisin sauce. I prefer some other spots version of this so this will be a pass as well. As for service and setting, the place was pretty big and good for families and kids. We got there at 11:30am on a weekday and were the only ones there at the start so we got a nice big booth. Parking was easy too. The ambiance is still from the previous Yamato restaurant (even the menus said Yamato on them).
