I used to be scared to enter this place, mostly because I had never seen the inside and usually drinking establishments with zero windows = sketch factor++. However, after getting inside once and finding out that they have a respectable selection of fine brews and that not everyone in there looks like an alcoholic or meth addict, I started to feel a little more at home. This place is great because it has a feel completely different from the other bars on this block, and since I live nearby, I need to break up my drinking styles a bit from time to time in order to stay on my toes. It's a great place to chill and converse with someone in a bit more of an intimate setting. The funkiness of the interior shouldn't shock any of you, you live in San Francisco, for fuck's sake. This place has always been my #1 favorite bar, with all it little nooks and crannies, its the best place to chill out, get to know someone, or get intimate with your significant other - over a glass, or two, or three... of Chimay, of course! The dark industrial decor reminds me of what you would find in east Berlin - I hope that never changes. Because this joint is so unique and unlike any other place here in SF, I give it a well deserved 5 stars. No more smoking allowed indoors however, you'll have to join the bums outside for a cig or head over to Amber. And if you are in need of a set of Chimay or Duval glasses, the owner is kind enough to sell you a set - that was how I procured my first set of Belgian beer glasses. read more

Noc Noc is kind of the perfect bar to black out at. ^I'm really going to lead with that. I feel like it's a judgement-free zone? Or maybe I just happen to end up there really drunk and often? I asked the bartender what I wanted to drink, visibly wasted the other weekend, and he recommended a bottle of sake. So I bought a bottle of sake... and blacked out. Thanks, Noc Noc! Everything here is super cheap and the inside feels like someone made a dark bar out of your childhood tree house or Pee Wee's Playhouse. There are fun, unique nooks to sit at, drinks are super cheap and they take cards. There really isn't a particular crowd it attracts either. Noc Noc is kind of for everyone. read more

If you're tired of look-alike bars, give Noc Noc a shot. Not only does it have a bizarre tribal/alien ambience, even the seating and layout is extremely creative. We wound up at a table that was essentially tucked into a hole in the wall. Good beer selection, including something I'd never heard of, "El Toro presents Jasper Poppy" or something like that. Is it really poppy-flavored? Possibly. At any rate it tastes like little else in the SF beer canon. Essentially, Noc Noc and it's neighbor Toronado should form the backbone of any good Lower Haight pub crawl. Just remember there's no hard liqour here. read more

So, when I was a kid my Mom never liked me eating candy, or watching rated R movies, or staying up late. She cooked "really healthy", which meant I ate twigs and berries. So one day, my buddy Jeff calls and asks if I could spend the night, I asked my mom if I could have a night off from our little prison camp. Surprisingly she said "OK". She took the heavy chains off and instantly felt liberated. I grab my sleeping bag and tooth brush and hit the mean streets of Poway and walked a few blocks to his house. His house was awesome, his parents shopped at a place called "Price Club". Which meant they had 500 of every kind of food ever made. And if that ran out, there was more stored in the garage. Anyway, his parents went to sleep, we stayed up all night long eating Airheads and Sour Skittles, watching all sorts of horror movies, with aliens, blood, guts, you know the good stuff. We planned on staying up all night, but eventually the sugar high wares off and all those frozen pizzas we ate start making me heavy, as well as my eyelids. That night I had the worst nightmares I have ever had. Gnarly shit, like aliens, blood, weird fucking places. A lot of years later I enter Noc Noc, and it all came rushing back to me. i walked and was like "what kind of nightmare-before-christmas-ass-shit is this?" it's like the walls, furniture and fixtures are coming alive to envelop you in shadows. it's tim burton's version of hell. [but thankfully everything just sits there while you drink your beer] kooky as it is, it isn't a bad bar. just don't try dinging "feliz navidad" once inside. or yelling anything regarding the oakland A's. One of my very favorite bars--also seems like one of the few bars where strangers talk to each other, especially if you stand at that center table. I've been bought drinks here, had female friends make new "gentlemen callers," and I really like the owner. I prefer the harder stuff but if I'm sticking to beer, this is the place I prefer. I like that it's dark and trippy--I'm a Lower Haight "denizen" and this place feels like the epitome of what my hood should be. Very interesting/bizarre bar. Alternative, hippie, different, fun all blended into one space. Good selection of import beers. Our Belgian friend and his gf brought us here one night since he knew Noc Noc had his favorite selections....had a nice time until his gf had quite a few to drink and decided to get "hot and heavy" on him by landing him huge kisses all over his face and mouth, hence we decided it was time to go.....Guess she couldn't "wait" to land him the big one! :) Woohoo.... read more

You find yourself acknowledging your place in this great city, all of your favorite neighborhood digs and you find yourself wanting a night filled with a bit of unique flavor: enter Noc Noc. This place will take you off your feet and make you feel like you are having a great trip in the midst of a Tim Burton film. The tall chairs, unique array of seating, vibrantly colored walls, astounding crowd, and incredible DJ are often just what the doctor ordered. Awesome psychedelic bar which feels very Flintstones meets Tim Burton. Dark and divey without being scummy. Good drink choices, friendly bartender, welcoming atmosphere but you can also do your own thing. Side room is dim and cozy, and would probably be a great spot to bring a first-date. It was one of the highlights of our recent trip to San Fran- definitely check it out if you want a funky but chill place to grab some drinks. read more

Pretty cool/wierd joint. A fun place to diffuse. The decor was just plain old crazy ass, but I mean that in a good way. My sister and I asked if there were any more seats and the bartender arranged seat cushions on the floor. The DJ was spinning really good hip-hop which I don't always listen to, so that was cool. They had saki, and a good beer selection but I was boozed out, so I got a sparkling mineral water. When It was closing time they were playing Novelle Vague and other chill stuff like that. read more

I love this bar. Weird interior that feels more the way SF used to feel. None of that yuppie bullshit in here. I like the yuppie bullshit, but sometimes you want something a little divey and with a lot more personality. That's why you drink at Noc Noc. Plus the beer selection is legit. After eating, drinking and socializing at a restaurant our group gathered ourselves to this small dark bar, which I had avoided before because I could never really see inside, but I'm glad I finally went in. I've been here twice...and I really liked it both times. I mean, come on, they have Racer 5, Speakeasy IPA, Fat Tire, and Sierra Nevada PA on tap? That's my entire evening right there. Very nice beer offering, and the bartenders are cool, they let you sample before committing. Sake available for those who do not consume beer. Then there's the decor. Totally bizarre and kick ass. Crazy weird decor and lots of little nooks to sit in with friends. The bartender knew a lot about beer and told us that she is a fan of aging beer, something I had never heard of before. We stopped in here after having a burger at Nicky's. When you enter yes, it feels like you are inside a cave and I felt like I stepped into a Flintstones episode. The vibe was relaxed. It was a lounge and the menu offered some interesting beer selections. My friend chose a sour beer, and I chose an Uncle Pat that is a cider with Guinness on top. Never tried that combo but it was surprisingly good. The music isn't loud enough to drown out your voice. So, if you're looking for a change of pace away from televisions, go here. read more

Sometimes I can be a real dick. I know it's hard to imagine with such a sweet face and bambi-esque eyes, but really, if I'm in the mood to be a prick I'll be as vindictive as I possibly can be. So the other night when Aussie Chipotle and I went out, I ordered him a bottle of La Fin du Monde...which translates into "The end of the world." And rightfully so! This shit goes down great, packs a whopping 9%, and gives you the worse fucking hangovers known to man (well, not THAT bad, but still). Thank goodness the noc-noc is around...great beer selection, the owner has had a fascinating life, and where else can you pretend to be inside a b-2 bomber?! And to be able to get a huge Australian drunk with a surer-than-i'm-going-to-hell (a.k.a. guaranteed) hangover...what could be better? read more

Very low-key and inviting neighborhood divebar in the Haight. Inside feels like i'm in beetlejuice land due to the interior, or perhaps the patrons wearing costume? It is the night after halloween after all! Drinks here are cheap and the servers are nice and accomodating! It's a tiny place so if you have a big group coming here, prepare to be dispersed. My only gripe is the weird smell coming from take out food that other patrons kept bringing in. Yes! They allow you to bring in outside food here! So the group adjacent to had had pizza and caesar salad and some garlic bread...so guess how the smell came to a mix in such an enclosed area? All in all, this place is great to get your drink on, plus they were playing awesome tunes from different genres! read more

I am moving away from the lower Haight and I already miss my stumble home bar. The reviews have been great but notably lack mention of their delicious sake bombs. This bar has always reminded me of the Flintstones if they died and went to that Beetlejuice purgatory. One night, near closing time, but no time near Halloween, a large group of zombies in tattered clothes staggered in looking for brains. Zombie 1: "Look at her, she's hot, she's beautiful. If only she were alive!" Zombie 2: "No, no, I like her dead." This is a good place to get drunk for cheap and meet interesting creatures. I don't know how this is even possible, but after living in the city for the last 7 years I finally came to this place for the first time last weekend. I loved the furniture - very different than what you'd find in most bars, and the little cave like nooks to sit in by the front windows were super cool. They have a ton of different beer selections, and even gluten free beer, which I've never tried but this is a good thing to know as I have a few friends who don't (or can't) have gluten. Noc Noc is great! The first two thoughts that that came to mind were Encino Man and acid trip. The funky, eclectic decor instantly made me smile and left me wanting more. They have a ton of seating and great little cut outs to get cozy in. The black lights, the artwork and the funky dance music really make this a fun bar. The night I was there they were playing a Charlie Chaplin film; I love the juxtaposition of the cave-like walls, black lights and old black and white film! The actual bar itself is small and surrounded by awesomely huge, wooden cut out chairs so you have to do a little maneuvering to get a drink. They have a great selection of beer and wine but heads up, they only serve beer and wine. I wanted to try something new and the bartender that tended to me was a very kind and friendly older man who picked just the right brew for me; I don't remember what sipped on but it was good. It's in a great location and it's easy to get to which may explain why the crowd had a nice mix and I was able to meet some cool people. I really like Noc Noc and definitely foresee some more good times at this place. read more

I walked in and was blown away with the funky decor but then this is haight afterall. I like that this place looks so cave like but there was like many cavemen and cave women artists who went on a mad brainstorm here. So colorful and dark. The bar is super tiny with bar stools that have super high backs which is kind odd because it blocks the view of the bar. Nonetheless, this place have character and the music is good to dance to. who knew this place serves sake bombs with large glasses of beer?!? O.o And oh, love the fact that the DJ is hidden in another room but you have slits to peep in. Only down side is they don't take credit card. Bah!
