Attended the first annual Cosmic Chili Cookoff event at this space-themed bar in SF this past weekend. It was $15 for competitors to participate and $5 for attendees to sample all of the chilis and cast a People's Choice vote. My mouth was on fire from one of the participants who used six ghost peppers in his concoction. And there were certainly some unique ingredients in some of the recipes, including jerk chicken and secret alien sauce. There were only seven competitors, but the helpings were large cups, so we were stuffed from all the chili goodness by late afternoon. Live country music played in the background, and both the indoor space and outdoor patio were lovely and created an inviting setting. There were giant TV screens inside too, playing the fifa world cup while we were there. We had a couple beers and the ten forward cocktail off the menu, which had a light and fruity flavor I enjoyed. My bf also tried the Nixta corn whiskey, which was definitely unique. The bartender and staff here were friendly, and there was even an adorable cat roaming around on site. We enjoyed our visit on this laid back Sunday in July. read more

Not sure I understand the interstellar reference but let's go with it. The bar is rather dark inside so maybe it's meant to evoke the galaxy? Originally I tried this bar only because El Rio was closed next door. Over the past year, I've popped by a handful of times because their huge back patio is a big plus on a warm balmy evening. Besides, their signature cocktails have a certain insouciance that I like. Like, for example, the $12 That Coffee Thing, one of their winter specials, is a kicky mix of vodka, cold brew, coffee liqueur, and house vegan Irish cream (photo: https://yelp.to/xANvuPj4yX). That was a delicious treat, a sweetly potent variation on an Irish coffee that allowed this Nip a nip when the weather was quite nippy. During our first time exploring Bernal Heights, we stopped into Mothership to imbibe. Given the bizarre August misty weather outside, stepping inside Mothership provided an instant reprieve. The atmosphere is super fun inside, with a lot of greenery/plants and a surprisingly large back patio. I ordered the Opal while my partner ordered the Two Days & Two Nights. The Opal was a nicely spirit forward drink that had a subtle hint of cinnamon that paired well with the whisky and brandy flavors. The Two Days & Two Nights was our favorite of the two, with a lot of spirit flavors coming together that were nicely balanced with the guanabana, pumpkin seed orgeat, and lemon, that mellowed the drink out and added layers of complexity. Walked in on Thursday night around 6:30 PM. No crowd, so grabbed a seat at the bar. Got there in time for happy hour which was 5-7pm Drinks: Twin Palms - light, acidic, refreshing and a great way to start off the night. Cocktail was pretty balanced, not very boozy and enjoyable overall. Dinner Theater - sweet, boozy and spirit forward. Not quite what I was expecting, was hoping for a more savory martini like cocktail. Wouldn't order this one again. But if you get two it comes with a bag of chips. Atmosphere: The lighting and vibe of mothership is awesome, fun multicolored lightbulb change throughout the evening. Beautiful back patio with heat lamps. Dance floor in the back of the bar. $5 margaritas on Wednesdays! They are a must! They pack a punch but don't taste strong (that's the scary part). This is a great bar to stop by if you're in the neighborhood. Aside from the margaritas that will creep up on you, Mothership has a variety of other specialty cocktails. My favorite is the Ten Forward -- a vodka based drink with passionfruit and pea flower. I like that it is not as crowded of a bar, so you can always grab seating in their spacious back patio. They also have pretty good music playing so you can dance if you want. So glad we found this place and absolutely loved the vibe and ambiance. Typical dark bar but has an outdoor space which was perfect with todays beautiful weather in the city. We got a $1 off for their happy hour on their classic house cocktails. Bar tender was so nice and friendly - he was there all day and then getting ready to dj all nite! Husband has the knee deep which had his favorite ancho chili and I by recommendation from the bartender had the ten forward. Loved it - very deceptive - can barely taste the alcohol but left me so buzzed. It was so good that I had two before heading out to dinner. Ok this is the craziest story and made me truly feel like Angelina Jolie in the Changeling when the police are telling her the random little boy is her son when she's like no that's not my son. I walked in with a few friends on a Thursday night to get a drink because El Rio was closed for a private event. I ordered a Tito's and soda and paid for my drink. The bartender brings over a drink that is clear so I think all good. I take on sip and i had the WORST taste. I don't really drink other liquors so my reaction was strong to this, it was absolutely not vodka. I asked my friend to try it but non of my other friends were drinking liquor that night. One did smell it and said that's definitely tequila or mezcal. I brought this to the bartenders attention and he kindly made me another drink. I saw him use a Tito's bottle and thought I was in the clear. When he handed it to me, it was the same thing! I mean the liquid had barely hit my tongue through the straw but I knew it wasn't vodka. I let him know, but at this point he was busy and wasn't believing me? I asked him to dip a straw in the drink and taste it but he refused which I get for hygiene purposes, I just wanted him to believe me! Also, at the same time, a stranger came up next to me and kept asking me if I was going to drink the two previous drinks he made. I said no, but between feeling crazy and trying to get the bartenders attention, they took it upon themselves to take the drinks to their friends. I honestly didn't notice or care because I felt crazy. So I finally am able to talk to the bartender and I ask at that point of a house vodka and soda. He was visibly annoyed. He also took the Tito's bottle out, poured a bit in a shot glass and tasted it and said it was vodka!? I mean I literally felt taken advantage of for paying for the damn drink and crazy that this bar tender was accusing me of lying!! He then goes to make a third vodka soda and as he is making it he tells me I have to pay for it because I "can't just be giving out free drinks". I was flabbergasted! I didn't know the stranger who took the other two, I had already paid for a Tito's and soda and could not get a freaking Tito's and soda!! I said I wouldn't pay and he threw the already made drink down the sink. The stranger happened to walk by and I told her that I was being charged and she felt bad and went up to the bartender and said she would pay for the two drinks she took from me. I think at that point, the bartender understood I wasn't trying to take advantage of anyone, I truly just wanted a drink. He also refused to let her pay for the two she took? Why not charge her if he was going to so willingly charge me? I have no clue. Finally, he made me a FOURTH house vodka soda and it was actually vodka. However, he made me feel so absolutely crazy and gaslit me. I felt so taken advantage of too because I paid for a drink and then I didn't get one until it was a big fuss. I honestly would have rather just not gone there at all, especially if I was going to be accused of lying and handing out free drinks. Does mothership just fill bottles with cheaper liquor and someone messed up? Idk, but what in the world happened last night, but it was so not worth it. TL:DR- a bartender kept serving me tequila or mezcal and soda when I ordered and paid for a Tito's and soda. When I tried to explain to him that it wasn't vodka, he argued with me and almost refused to make me another unless I paid. They have live DJs sometimes, and tasty drinks, though the two that I tried (the knee deep and golden hour) were slightly on the tart side and had a lot of ice in the cup. Beam. Me. Up. I went out of my way to check out what was going on at the old Virgil's Sea Room spot, especially if there was a chance that it involved aliens. Plus, I had heard the owners are former bartenders from some beloved bars of mine. Service, quick and friendly -- everyone in my group enjoyed their drinks. And while we didn't do it this time, I dig that you can opt for a margarita pitcher or sub in mezcal. The back patio that lines up with El Rio's next door seems even more spacious than before, but we opted to bathe under the mothership lights. It made for some nice intergalactic chit chat and if I lived nearby, I'd go more often for sure. Other cool touches: the bar counter and mirror with a nice visual representation of traveling through the galaxy. Drink enough and you just might! read more

Security is horrible here. went to enjoy music and went outside to smoke. saw a no smoking signs on one side of patio and not the other. So I go to smoke on the side with no signs where other patrons were smoking. then proceeded to get harassed and kicked out by security since apparently the whole patio is a no smoke zone . This I would totally understand if the signage was clear. I've been a patron At many bars that have some signage of half and half patio so this was not uncommon for me to assume The security guard was abusive and physical I will never ever ever recommend this bar and shame on them for using such aggression on small women for it was just me and a friend under 5'2 read more

This place, which I'm told used to be Virgil's, has had a makeover and inside the bar looks a lot more modern like... well a toned down version of a sci fi space ship.... or I guess a mothership. :) It's got a unique combo of features: a giant patio out back with lots of heat lamps (and some pretty loud speakers you can escape if you choose the right table), a small dance floor inside, and an even smaller hangout area near the bar itself. The crowd is probably mostly LGBT and in my visits all kinds were welcome. Super friendly staff in often hilarious T-shirts. I miss this place just writing about it. read more

Amazing drinks and a very cute interior. All blacklights with a modern look to the bar. It looks tiny from the outside, but has a really big inside with what I think is a dance floor.
