We came on a weekend, and by the time Nomikai opened for the night, their kitchen was already closed, so heads up in case you're thinking about getting some snacks with your drinks. Service is a bit slow (we had a table and kept having to look for someone to take our order, ask for water, get the check, etc). Bathroom (especially women's restroom) gets crowded very quickly. A great place to start for a night out in Downtown San Jose! I came here recently with friends to grab a first drink on a Friday night. It was earlier in the evening around 9pm so there was plenty of seating however later in the night it is known to get pretty full. We had a couple kamikaze shots and a tequila soda while we enjoyed the live DJ there that night. Every Friday a local DJ by the name of Yurimagination is there and I enjoy his SoundCloud mixes so I was excited to stay and watch for a little bit. I haven't tried the food here but I saw they have pork belly bites and other items on the menu so I am curious to try something next time I'm in. Overall, this is a great place to start the night and have a couple drinks or if you're looking for a chill vibe. I would defiantly check out other places in the area when I'm in the mood to dance since there is not really space for that in Nomikai. Nomikai is one of my favorite spots downtown. My favorite drinks are lychee martini and sake bomb (hot sake plus beer, good for sharing, we split among 4 people). The sake bomb comes with plastic cups that have a built in shot cup. I would like to come back on a less busy day and try out their food sometime. On weekend nights they do play music super loud so while it is a more chill location for downtown, it's still not the best place for conversation. read more

I came here with my friends on a Saturday night, and they claim that Friday nights are way more busy in DTSJ than Saturdays. They all ordered around 5 rounds of drinks together and chilled, we managed to fend for a table and we had a good time. I was DD so I was only able to get a small taste of everything everyone had ordered :( but the Pandan Old Fashioned and Lychee Martini were delicious. The paloma and mojito weren't half bad either, the Thursday punchbowls seem very promising and like you won't go broke if you split it with a large party lol. i stopped by here on the friday night before the holiday break with 2 friends and it was a pleasant experience! the place was well-decorated for the holidays without being overly decorated to the point of sensory overload. it was hard to find seating - we ended up taking up 2 chairs at the end of the long table. i also felt that it was kinda loud. the service was attentive - a server came up to us and asked if we had been helped yet and offered to take our order. the same server also checked in on and helped me when i was looking for water. we ordered the five spice duck pizza and some of the holiday cocktails (shine bright like a diamond, smells like christmas spirit, billie holiday). we had never had duck pizza before so we were excited to try something new. it was pretty decent, but nothing standout. generally the same can be said for the cocktails. read more

Nomikai was super nice in accommodating our big party! We were able to take up the majority of the long table in the middle of the place. They did offer tables with actual seats but the wait would be longer but we were fine standing with the long table. There were a few bar stools underneath so it was pretty chill. Drinks were pretty yummy! I got the Mugi Mule includes: yokaichi mugi soju, vodka, house made ginger syrup, fever tree ginger beer, and, fresh lime juice. Super gingery and bubbly. This place is totally universal. You can go out and have some drinks on the weekends or you can enjoy a delicious dinner on a weekday. On Thursday nights they have fishbowls which are great if you come with friends and you can share with them. Make sure to have at least a minimum of 3 people. I've also come for dinner. My friends and I decided to share a few appetizers and I had the Mac n cheese for the meal. The Mac n cheese was super cheesy and I loved the addition of the breadcrumbs on top which added a crunch. Our server was super friendly and she was really helpful when choosing what to eat. I would definitely return. Stopped by here prior to a concert. Happy hour is from 5:30PM-8:30PM Wednesday-Saturday. Got to love those hours. For drink (because there must be drinks during happy hour), I had the Getaway - a mix of coconut & ginger liqueur, unfiltered sake, and Japanese whisky. Strong, lot of coconut flavor, and I liked the spice of the ginger. We had the sweet chili chicken wings, the Vietnamese garlic noodles, and the five spice duck pizza (scallions, sesame seeds, bell peppers, duck, mozarella). I'd recommend all of them. The lychee martini is a must try for people who like sweeter and less strong alcohol. It basically tasted like juice! I've been to Nomikai a number of times and have had enjoyable experiences, but my latest visit was sub par due to the overall service. I felt that the wait staff members were totally unaware of their surroundings. Five minutes after we were seated, a larger party sat next to us on the counter. We were visibly ready to order our first round of drinks... and I mean, we've BEEN ready to order. We had our menus closed and were craning our necks around to make eye contact with our server way before the larger party had sat down. Our server, however, took the larger party's drink order first even though they were still obviously scanning the menu. Furthermore, the kitchen was slow AF that night. Our food and drinks took forever to come out. At least the food was good and my expectations. We ordered the miso mac 'n' cheese and roasted cauliflower dip off the happy hour menu. Can't say that I could taste the miso in the mac 'n' cheese, but that wasn't a make or break for me anyway. It was rich, cheesy, yummy, and comforting - all the things that make a solid mac 'n' cheese. The roasted cauliflower dip was super smooth and creamy, but it had an acquired taste. I think there was a hint of garlic to flavor the dip. The focaccia bread was a nice touch, and I liked that it was soft and toasted. Additionally we got the five-spiced duck pizza off the entrees menu. It did not disappoint as it was a unique take on an Asian fusion pizza. The flavors reminded me so much of a Chinese steamed bao. The drinks were fine. My friend ordered the Saffron Sparkler, and I got The Getaway. You'd think that the Saffron Sparkler would be yellow because of saffron, but we were all so confused that it came out looking gray. The color must've came from the creme de violette. I couldn't taste the spice from the saffron. In fact I could only taste the floral notes of the violet, but it was a nice, refreshing sparkling drink nonetheless. It also tasted way better than mine. A lot more people started rolling in around 9:30-10 and they also have a DJ come in later on for live music. We all ordered two rounds of drinks as well as some food. Service was great, the waitresses were super attentive. The lychee martini was great and so was the rose Royce, but the rolls Royce was a bit stronger than the martini. Not sure if they just didn't have it for the day or anymore because it's still on their menu online. Ordered the pollo adobo and sausage fest instead. The pollo adobo was good, but nothing crazy. With 4 people and 15 drinks on our bill, I was a bit disappointed that we were hardly even buzzed from it all. So even though the drinks were pretty cheap, they were weak. We ordered the Kimcheese Fries, Mac and Cheese, and Sweet Chili Chicken Wings all for $5 each on the happy hour menu. While the mac and cheese and wings (good kick of spice though) were okay, my favorite was the Kimcheese fries! The fries were covered in nori seasoning and then topped with melted cheese and a kimchi salsa and green onions. I wished I ordered more orders of the fries instead, to be honest! We also ordered the Five-Spice Duck Pizza ($17), which was a very unique take of a Chinese-inspired pizza. I loved that they had all the Asian versions of a pizza taken from Korean, Filipino, and Vietnamese. Although a bit pricey, the pizza was delicious! The drinks are great here! I had a bowl with the group I was with and it was nicely made. I can't seem to find the menu as they won't serve bowls on Thursdays. It had nice flavors of lime, mint, cucumber, and gin. My group didn't like it, but I loved it. It had a nice citrus lime to it, tastes refreshing, and the alcohol was not super noticeable. I don't really get it; I thought this was a hip fusion place with great food, as suggested by their reviews. A four-star bar and lounge is difficult to come by in DTSJ, where many places try to accommodate the young adults who attend SJSU. We had seen Nomikai many times in passing, and finally decided to try it out during SJ restaurant week. We came on a Friday night, and there were only four other people in the bar. Odd, because we came at dinner time, and it seems that although they are a bar, they specialize mostly in bites. Unfortunately nothing stood out on the drink menu, so I went with the trusted lychee martini. If I remember correctly, it was a happy hour item and we had just made it on time, so that was a plus. However, the drink wasn't too strong...overall unremarkable. We ordered the duck fat popcorn and the banh mi pizza to share. The popcorn was overpriced and hardly tasted like it had been cooked in duck fat. It's a very distinct taste, and the popcorn had no flavor. We were pretty disappointed with it, and I would suggest avoiding it. It's merely something to chew on while drinking. We only got the banh mi pizza because honestly, nothing else on the menu that night looked appealing. We don't even like banh mis, but it was unique so we figured we'd try something new. I decided to check out Nomikai for a quick dinner before heading to a show at the San Jose Stage Company since I saw that they had a good Happy Hour menu from 5:30-8:30pm. The timing for the Happy Hour was great as I feel like most Happy Hour usually end pretty early around 5 or 6pm. They have Happy Hour every week from Wed-Sat from 5:30-8:30pm. When we arrived around 6pm on a Friday night, I was surprised that the restaurant was completely empty. We didn't have to wait at all and was seated right away. Our waitress was super nice and really took the time to explain everything on the Happy Hour menu to us. As she was explaining she also made a lot of recommendations about what is popular or good. She definitely added to my experience here and made us feel really taken care of. We ended up ordering a Kumquat Cooler and Lychee Martini for drinks to start. For food, we ordered the Kimcheese fries, Sweet Chili Chicken Wings, Mac n Cheese (Miso based), and Crispy Crab Rolls. It was definitely way too much food for two people but we wanted to try different things on the menu. It sounded like they change up their menu by the season and try to experience with different things on their menu. For example, the Mac n Cheese dish was special since it was made with miso rather than their usual Mac n Cheese dish. I really enjoyed both the drinks and highly recommend the cocktails. For food, I thought everything was just okay. Despite really wanting to like the food after the waitresses gave us all the recommendations, I thought the food was good but not amazing. The Kimcheese fries was good but I towards the end I thought it got a bit too heavy. For the Sweet Chili Chicken Wings (probably my favorite of the night), the skin was really crispy and the sauces were good. The sweet chili sauce is actually really spicy, so if you have a low tolerance, I highly recommend asking it to be on the side. I think the most disappointing dish of the night was the Crispy Crab Roll, the sauce (supposedly a jalapeno ginger sauce) was really sour and did not match the flavors of the roll. Also, since the roll was stuffed with imitation crab, I felt like it the roll was on the sweeter side than I would've liked. I originally thought Nomikai was a restaurant. I came with hopes that I could enjoy a nice dinner on a Saturday night but instead, was greeted by a idk? What would you really consider this place? We walk inside, it was dark, there was a DJ, there was dancing, there was chilling, and then there were people at the bar. The lego movie was playing, the DJ was spinning some 90's hip hop and R&B, and the overall vibe seemed cool. There was just too many things going on at once. How am I supposed to enjoy my slice of banh mi pizza, watch the lego movie, and dance to 90s hip hop songs all AT ONCE . The DJ then decided to play Portland and then thats when everyone started going crazy. You play Drake and everything becomes a mistake . The banh mi pizza was exactly like a banh mi pizza. Pork chunks, pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeño, cilantro, and some sort of hoisin mixture all on top of a thin cracker crust. The chicken wings were sweet, savory, and crispy. I loved the concept of the kimcheese fries but I cant say I enjoyed them very much. The cheese was too slimy and didn't compliment the kimchi flavor. The fries were extra crispy though! Happy Hour is the jam here! Glad I finally stopped by after years of hearing great things/reading rave reviews on Yelp. Wife and I had a bit of a choose your own adventure date night Saturday, starting with drinks and Nori Fries at Nomikai. She ordered the Saffron Sparkler, a gin & sparkling wine concoction, and I went with their Yugi Mule, a play on a Moscow Mule. My drink was super refreshing and I loved the ginger kick from the ginger beer and ginger-infused syrup. Nori Fries were simple yet addictive and awakened our hunger within. Our stay was brief as we continued our CYOA at boba a couple doors down then Thai food shortly after. All in all, a great night. And Nomikai was a big reason why! read more

Still like the vibe here. You can't go wrong with happy hour and Whiskey Wednesdays! Happy hour runs late here, compared to most other places. And they have happy hour on Saturdays!! $2 off cocktails is pretty decent, especially when ordering a lot of Japanese Old Fashioneds. Great place to get your FRYday on, with their seven-spice Nori Fries. I prefer these over their Kimcheese fries for less mess. Their duck fat popcorn and crispy pork belly with jalapeno ginger are my other HH staples here. Got a special off of Groupon for two flights for $30, combined with ebates/ibotta you get a % back from the purchase. My friend I usually go to Paper Planes but this is the first we went in to drink. Daniel, our bartender, assisted us in our redemption and did a nice presentation of showing us the flights. As well, usually most places when you go to them won't point out about happy hour. When they do its after the fact right when you order or discover it is happy hour. Majority of places don't have it in easy viewing so you never really know until you get there or remember. But right before we even showed our Groupon, he notified us that happy hour closes in five minutes and even after the time, because we sat down he would honor the order after our flights. What honest service! Our flight was three different Japanese whisky. And even though it was placed down in order, Daniel suggested in the route to drink in. And as we sipped each one, we couldn't have agreed more. This is an old bartending trick that I learned as a bar-back; serving sparkling water with flights to cleanse the pallet/tongue before moving onto the next glass. But majority of places don't do it anymore because they want to rush onto the next customer. Daniel took the time to pour it and instruct us to drink it before each flight. If your bartender isn't doing this, take note! I was also impressed that the host was also helping taking out orders from the kitchen. A lot of team work on the staff, impressive. After our flights, Daniel took hour order for happy hour. Ordered Kimchi Fries, and even though its Happy Hour food, IT WAS A LOT OF FRIES. I was meeting up with my sister and friend and we yelped to find a good happy hour. The happy hour here is Wednesday-Saturday from 5:30-8:30 so it was perfect for after work. I got a Lychee martini based on everyone else's reviews it was light on the alcohol but good. My sister got a Coco berry which was strong in the coconut flavor. My friend ended up coming a bit earlier than us and started with a Sangria. It was pretty good! Located on first street and included in the trifecta of 3 bars/lounges to go if you're on 1st. The more chill place that places hip hop/rnb rap. Has hot sake which is pretty rare for downtown sj or bars in general. Usually has tables you can sit down at if they aren't reserved for bottle service. Their food as actually pretty good just make sure you order before cut off time. Loud inside or course. For parking gotta find downtown parking of course but there's also a parking structure across the street that's $13 i believe but it's probably gonna go up by the time someone sees my post. Usually has food stands outside. Dimly lit of course, and as clean as a bar/lounge usually is. Guys bathroom line can get long. Went there for happy hour. They have 3-dollar beer, cocktails, and small bites on the HH menu, I recommend the kimchi cheese fries and garlic noodles, they are both $5, vegetarian, and delicious. For cocktail, I liked the allusive gin and tonic, it was more than gin and tonic! They put cucumber and berries in it, it was subtle but went went well with the drink! Love the shark tank bowls on Thursday! I came here on a Thursday night with a few friends and since it was a weekday it was not really crowded. We got the shark tank and something else (I forget what it's called but it's the one right underneath the shark tank with grapefruit in it). Personally, I really liked the shark tank because it was really sweet and tasted good but I wasn't too big of a fan of the second one. Service was great as the staff there were really chill and polite which made the experience overall even better. The menu was also pretty big offering other things like beers, soju cocktails, sake, and food. While the shark tank was a little pricey, it's not too bad if you guys with some friends and split it. I was watching the staff make the drink and I will say that it's like 35% drink and 65% ice which helps dilute the drink but I feel it's a little bit too much ice. Overall great place to chill at and grab drinks. I would come here again but I'd see if it's possible to go a little lighter on the ice lol read more
