They do bring you their garlic knots right at the beginning of the meal, but they did not look or taste much like my other fav Italian place in NE Houston. The bread at Marsala's was dry and crusty (the other place has soft and pillowy bread) and there was no drippings or garlic butter resting at the bottom of the bowl, so I just ate a little of the interior of the knot itself. I ended up choosing a lighter dish, shrimp scampi, since I was still full from lunch and my dining companion chose the chicken penne. I'm not sure whether the chef was out sick or what happened exactly, but both dishes came out from the kitchen really bland. There was no salt or seasoning to the food. The pasta also didn't seem like the water was salted during cooking. We mentioned this issue to our server, who then told the manager. They were really apologetic and even comped our entrees even though that wasn't our original intention. I just wanted to know what happened and why there was no seasoning at all in the food. We left and of course didn't bother to order dessert. In summary, the service was really good, I will give them that much, but the food was barely edible. I'm just not sure I would even come back to try other dishes since these two we ordered just could have been so much better.

The inside of the restaurant is just not set up well in my opinion. When you're waiting at the front, you're basically on top of a table of diners. The tables are all very close to each other and it feels like it's a very tight space. I do believe that the patio is a better vibe for seating, but we didn't really get to check it out. The food was just okay. It wasn't bad but I also wasn't very impressed. We shared the mediterranean sampler. I ordered the chicken piccata while my husband had the sausage bianco pizza. The bartender added lemon juice to it when we wanted lemon twist. That said, they made it right and it turned out delicious! The calamari was good. I ordered the chicken fried steak and my other half ordered the petit filet. Presentation on the plate was great! The chicken fried steak was good, but very thin. The mashed potatoes and green beans were great. The wedge salad my other half got with his steak was wonderful. The blue cheese was very mild and excellent (and I'm not a blue cheese fan)! The petit filet was cooked perfectly but the risotto was clumpy and mushy. I hate to say this, but the steak was good, but not $50 good. My other half said it was kind of bland. The interior is a mix with some nicely updated areas and some outdated areas (e.g. their restrooms). Their happy hour lasts until 7pm 6 days a week....which is practically unheard of these days. It has a good food selection with 11 hearty dishes ranging from $9 - $18 currently. As far as drinks, they have the $5, $6, and $8 basic drinks, and then the higher priced specialty cocktails (5 of them) for $11 each. I tried the toasted ravioli and mussels. For drinks, I tried the margarita and an old fashioned. Toasted ravioli - I have to admit....Houston is probably never going to beat any of the restaurants serving toasted ravioli in St. Louis. Here, they're more rubbery and you can barely taste any beef. Mussels - a big disappointment, they are steamed in garlic herbs and white wine, but on my visit they tasted sour and putrid. Margarita - a very smooth drink made with triple sec. I liked it, but it was a little pricy for happy hour considering I had just had a great $7 margarita down the road just yesterday. Old fashioned - this was a good cocktail with simple ingredients but it was made well. Again, a little pricy for happy hour as I visit another restaurant in the Waterway which uses better quality whiskey and is priced a few dollars less. I was a little disappointed about the service since the bartender was working the bar area and also several tables in the general vicinity. I ended up finishing my first drink and then waited nearly 15 mins before they even asked me if I wanted another. I also had to battle with a crawling insect on the bartop. I initially brushed him away from my plates....but later found him crawling on my pant leg. Uggh...so annoying!
