While it doesn't have the large outdoor patio as the first Piccolo Sogno, the food and service are the equal. The advantage with Due is it is easier to get a reservation. I have been here twice already and each time the food and the service quality was the same. I love Piccolo Sogno (both locations) because they are one of the few restaurants who offer my favorite pasta dish, black spaghetti. And they cook the pasta al dente just like it is in Italy. Their wine list is extensive and love the fact they offer all Italian wines. Last but not least, their staff speaks Italian which gives me an opportunity to practice the language. I really enjoyed this restaurant. the prosciutto appetizer is freshly sliced when ordered and it was mouth watering. I ordered the special of spinach and ricotta cheese dumplings with black truffle and the only thing I felt was that instead of the actual truffle that black truffle oil would have been a better substitute but it was still delicious. we had a lot of picky eaters and they were very kind in allowing us to order spaghetti and meatballs which they greatly enjoyed. they also accommodated us and put together a table of 14 which was greatly appreciated. everyone enjoyed their food and we had a great meal so thank you! read more

My boyfriend and I had 7:30pm reservations here on Tuesday. We were told 4 times our table would be ready in 10 more minutes. We waited over 40 minutes past our reservation time just to sit down. It was clear the table wouldn't be ready in 10 minutes, so rather than the hostess being dishonest (and not very friendly), I'd rather her have apologized and have given us a more realistic wait time up front. Overall, the food was great, but with numerous other authentic Italian restaurants around Chicago with much better service, I'm not sure either of us will be returning here. read more

Horrible. I have been wanting to try this spot for months now and was finally able to last night, however our experience was not at all what we were expecting it to be. First of all, we arrived for our reservation about 3 minutes before 7:15 which we were then told that no tables were available. 3 different parties came in AFTER us to check in and are somehow all seated before us? It has now been over 15 minutes since we checked in for our reservation and while we were getting a drink at the bar another party that had checked in after us had been sat at a table, they then proceeded to change tables and were taken outside after I had specifically stated in my reservation that we wanted to be sat outside and then mentioned it again when checking in. After bringing this to both the hostess and managers attention we were met with horrible attitudes by them and received no help at all. I'm appalled at the way this business is run and how we were treated so rudely but the "manager". In fact, he was trying to lie and say it was our fault somehow? We ended up not even eating here and left for a different italian restaurant called Formentos in the loop which is AMAZING. Safe to say I will never be coming back to Nonnina again. read more

We went to Nonnina for the menu, we can't wait to go back because of how they executed it: the cocktails, appetizers, salads, mains, and deserts (and the service was good too)! The atmosphere was inviting and intimate, perfect for a birthday, retirement, anniversary, or date. I can't wait to go back and try more items on the menu but based on what I had this time around I would highly recommend the Eggplant al Forno, the Chopped Antipasto Salad, and the Crostata di Arance Rosse (blood orange curd tart). The desert was far and away the best I have had in Chicago and I've had wonderful deserts at some of the best Italian restaurants in the city, but this is just heavenly. Our service was great (they checked in a few too many times, but they haven't been open very long so I think they wanted to make sure everything was on par with the other top Italian spots in River North). Give them one more month and reservations will probably be harder to come by, this place is going to take off, it is too good not to. I was really impressed; I've been to Siena Tavern, RPM, Bar Siena, Formento's, and Sapori, I like them all for different reasons and I am happy to move Nonnina to the top of that list of places I want to visit again and places I would highly recommend! read more

Coming from an Italian, I would give this place 0 stars if I could. The baked clams had little flavor and so much breading. The linguine with seafood was over cooked, lumpy, and the seafood was not fresh and very fishy. They brought out the wrong meal for my stepdad so then they had to make a new one. He got veal but the "new one" that came out about 2 minutes later seemed like they just washed off the sauce and put the correct one on. The "veal", which was really pork, was tough, chewy, and had no breeding. Traditional Italian always has at least a little egg and flour - especially with veal. On their behalf, our waiter and the manager were very nice - but the food was horrible. I was here for vacation and was expecting the full Chicago food experience. We went to Nonnina for Valentine's Day! We had a great dinner! Each woman received a complimentary rose that eve too. We ordered Meatballs for a starter. Very large meatball with tasty sauce. A very nice place to catch lunch at. I know my mom and girlfriend were not that impressed, but I was. I mean, this was the best balsamic vinegar I've ever had and the restaurant had it made especially for them. When something that small has so much thought put into it you know everything else will be up to par. I love caprese salad and they had a fine one, they also make their own bread (lots of choices as well) and pasta. The Black Ink spaghetti is probably the best italian dish I've ever had. It's something I've never experienced before and now it's one of my favorite foods. Excellent Italian wine list (I had a Montepulciano) as well. Service was fine, atmosphere meh. I will say the pasta on my mom's Tagliatelle was not cooked correctly. Clumpy and tough to chew, something went wrong on that dish. My husband and I love Piccolo Sogno, so we recently tried Due. I'm pregnant and expressed to the server that I couldn't have unpasteurized dairy. Our server consulted with the chef who soon came out to go over what I could and could not eat in detail on the menu. He was so sweet about it and he totally made our night. I would be nervous to eat dairy at most restaurants, but the chef was so genuinely concerned for my well being. We had fantastic appetizers, entrees and as we were finished up our waiter pleasantly surprised us with anything we wanted on the dessert menu. If you want to go out for a nice Italian dinner, Piccolo Sogno Due is exactly what you'd picture. The atmosphere is really pleasant, relatively quiet and not too crowded. We had the gnocchi as an appetizer, which worked well- they're tasty and heavily seasoned, and just a few apiece was about right for my family. The fish dishes were incredible. We had the salmon (great) and the halibut (best I can remember having), both of which I really recommend. For dessert, the chocolate and pistachio mousse was good but not great, and the chocolate lava cake with vanilla gelato was incredible! This place looks promising but the service is weak. To begin with our table was not ready for our reservation. It is usually ok waiting at a bar but good luck getting a drink the bartenders could not get around to us before the table was ready. The atmosphere is so so, kind of a bistro. The appetizers were tasty. Try the cauliflower with mushrooms. The baked pasta thing I would not recommend there is plenty of food there, but it is not very good. By the time they took our dinner order they were shockingly Out of anything with protein including three premier items, the steak, the lamb, even the chicken. The branzino was a tiny piece with too much lemon nothing unique about it. Of course they were happy to offer more pasta! The carbonara was disappointing more cream sauce not cheese, not very authentic and the bacon was underdone and cubed. I do recommend the short rib served over soft gnocchi if you can handle anymore pasta. The waitress was from Italy she was gracious. read more

I have been to the main restaurant and thought it was great, but the real star here and one of the best kept secrets in Chicago, in my opinion, is the takeout lunch counter (enter main door and turn right). Try the buffalo chicken wrap, which isn't even on the regular menu -- it will blow your fricking mind. All of the other sandwiches I've tried are incredible as well. And prices are totally reasonable. Selfishly I hope they do enough business to keep the counter open but not enough to have a line out the door. If you work downtown, don't think twice about crossing the river to grab lunch here. read more

Tried Nonnina this weekend for the first time and was very impressed!! The pasta is homemade in-house and was absolutely delicious! I started with the beet, fennel and orange salad, which was great. A little heavy on the dressing, but the goat cheese on the salad cut through the heavy dressing. My dinner partner had the caesar salad and raved about it. I had the rigatoni alls vodka, and it was awesome. The sauce was not as heavy and creamy as usual, but I really enjoyed the lighter sauce. We also tried the Mafalde which was spinach pasta with mushrooms and asparagus. It had a garlic-y flavor and was very good. We brought home a Braciole alla Nonnina for a friend, which was great! The meat was so tender and the gnocchi were very soft. Overall, this dinner was wonderful and extremely reasonable priced for typical Chicago restaurants. Nonnina has delicious food, a creative menu that includes traditional Italian dishes lacking from many Italian restaurants, and caring service. I am of Italian ancestry, as are my husband and cousin. We went to Nonnina to celebrate my cousin's birthday on Saturday evening. The valet was prompt, and we were seated immediately per our reservation time. I am a vegan who is not fond of pasta, so Nonnina accommodated my request for the Mafalda dish to be served with fava beans instead. Excellent! My husband and cousin had the Mafalda dish as offered, and loved it, too. The pasta is made fresh at the restaurant, which contributed, I'm sure, to the flavor. The appetizers and salads we enjoyed were equally delicious. The service was attentive and thoughtful. We will definitely return. read more

Such a disappointment. Cannot understand what the buzz is all about. Grilled octopus was served on very sandy greens - clearly not washed properly. The fregola had a most odd flavor which I could only detect as artificial butter flavoring - something you'd taste on bad caramel corn. It clearly had a sweet overtone. Absolutely inedible. The rapini was dry and not well prepared. The crab pasta dish, had no flavor. Regrettable choice. read more

The flavor combinations were odd, some things tasted bland and the lamb sausage pizza was downright gag worthy. I am a big fan of the original Piccolo Sogno, food was very very good. But Due, needs some help. Great service and decor but prawns were overcooked and dry. The pasta was over cooked and the sauce on the mushroom rav was off. Maybe we just had a bad one off as this location had only been open a few weeks when we went last month or so. For downtown and now, I'd rather do coco pozzo in riv north or the cafe east of michigan ave around delaware by NWMH, they are very very consistent. read more
