The wife and I are in Chicago to see a couple of baseball games and we were looking for a place to eat dinner close to our hotel. Our first stop was Gino's. But the line was out the door and around into an alley. Our second stop was Rosebud. I was a little hesitant because the outdoor dining space was packed. But fortunately, the enthusiastic manager said there was space upstairs. Inside, it was fully ambiance. Lots of families. We sat next to an Asian family. They looked like they were having good time. Ok... let's get to it. I had the Baked Ziti. I looked at it and said to myself there's no way I'm going to finish this. The portion was huge. However once I was finished, I didn't feel heavy at all. It was really good. The service was good. The waiter, Jaime had an accent I couldn't quite make out, but he was friendly. The manager came by to check on us. He did that with everyone. Once we left, I saw New York Yankees play by play announcer,Michael Kay, enjoying a meal with his wife. Definitely a place to stop by again. read more

My sister and I spent a while looking up different restaurants, but since we were staying at the Residence Inn just down the street, we decided to pick a spot within walking distance. I made a reservation on OpenTable and was able to find a table for two within about 45 minutes. When we arrived, the restaurant was busy, with many people enjoying the outdoor seating, which made the whole place feel lively and welcoming. I also enjoyed their wall of famous people who haven't eaten there! We were seated downstairs near the bar area, which had a cozy atmosphere and a view of the outdoor seating. The noise level was definitely on the louder side, but we actually enjoyed it because it felt comfortable to have our own conversation without feeling like other tables could overhear us. We started with drinks: the Venetian (Prosecco, Aperol, a splash of soda, and orange peel) and a glass of the house Chardonnay. Warm bread was brought to the table along with grated parmesan and olive oil. For food, my sister ordered the Rigatoni alla Vodka and I chose the Chicken Parmesan. The rigatoni was creamy, perfectly cooked, and somehow felt both light and comforting at the same time. Our server joked that he was bringing out my "small order," and I quickly understood why - the Chicken Parmesan was enormous and could easily feed 2-3 people. The chicken parm struck the perfect balance between crispy and creamy with the sauce and melted cheese. The tomato sauce tasted fresh and homemade, with a subtle sweetness balanced by just the right amount of tangy acidity. It was flavorful without being overpowering and tasted like it was made from quality ingredients rather than coming from a jar. I ended up taking about half of the Chicken Parmesan home, and we also ordered tiramisu to go, which was outstanding. Decided to get takeout at this place after some intense Lollapalooza activity. The service was quite pleasant and ordering was seamless. However, the one thing that was inconvenient was that I was overcharged for one of my items (luckily I was able to dispute this with my payment POC) The food itself hit hard and definitely satisfied my Italian cravings. Been wanting to try this place for a long time! Finally got a chance to go last week and it was a good experience. The bucatini cacio e pepe was very very under salted unfortunately but the rigatoni alla vodka was nice. The stars of the show, however, were the garlic knots and the chocolate cake! The garlic knots were some of the best I've tried. The service was very friendly and the food came out very quickly. If you want to spend a good amount of time there, take your time to order! Made a reservation here for a Friday night dinner while in town. We originally had reservations for another place but the menu here seemed more accommodating and had plenty to offer. We were sat in the dining room downstairs. From that moment we were handled by an army of waiters who took our order, filled drinks, etc. We started with the caprese salad which they split at the table. Standard execution of this - nothing to complain about - very fresh and tasted good. For my entree, I popped on the rigatoni vodka and added a meatball. The meatball seemed to be a focal point throughout their menu, so when in Rome. This was very good - the flavor was on-point and the meatball was very very good. Really liked this a lot. For dessert I ordered the banana cream pie which - well - wasn't. The execution of this wasn't very good and the only thing that tasted like banana were the brulee'd bananas next to it on the plate - really disappointing. The chocolate cake which was the size of the Sears Tower however - was really really good. Moist, plenty of icing and we didn't even try to finish it. Walking by after dinner across the street and the sign says business casual dress and we are def more on the VERY casual side. The maître d' saw us looking at the menu and welcomed us in. Took us right to two open seats at the bar. It's cozy, warm and inviting in the basement/downstairs area. The bartender Alison was so great! Our cocktails were incredible!! We wish we had been hungry, the food walking by looked SO GOOD! We heard people saying the steaks were better than Michael Jordan's steakhouse at the Intercontinental. Rosebud is a solid choice for classic, traditional Italian food in the city. I made a reservation for 3 and even though we arrived 20 minutes early, we were seated right away. The tables are close together as someone else said and it can be noisy (we were seated next to a very large party) yet service by Jaime was excellent. He had a great sense of humor and was very attentive. We enjoyed the bread basket but still ordered the garlic knots. The two pasta entrees we ordered were not huge portions but they were very good. My chicken Milanese WAS huge! I thought $39 was a bit steep compared to the pasta dishes but I got a lot of food with plenty to take home. Adding one glass of a delicious rose wine and a hunk of their amazing double chocolate cake (highly recommend!) came to about $200 for the 3 of us so we wouldn't do it every day, but it was a nice meal out. read more

We came here for a business dinner while we were all in the area for meetings. We made reservations and it was a good thing as they were pretty busy. They sat us at a nice table downstairs and our server was great! Very engaging, helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. The menu here is outstanding! I can tell you that everything everyone else in our party got looked amazing and they all said tasted great. After our server described the breaded chicken used for the chicken parm, I wanted this, but didn't want chicken parm. My dish came out perfectly and exactly the way I wanted and it tasted amazing! The slight spiciness of the pasta sauce was great and the amazing texture of the homemade pasta was excellent! Then, add to that their outstanding chicken and it made for an incredible entrée!!! I even came from the airport, and the Rosebud staff stowed our luggage while we dined. 1 Star. Food - We ordered a number of appetizers for the table, but the most memorable for me was the Caprese Salad. With the colors of the Italian flag, the fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato was a cool palette cleanser for my main meal. I chose the Bone-In Chicken Vesuvio style. The chicken breasts were pounded thin and sat in a delightful garlic and lemon broth. Four large potato wedges surrounded by the tender, flavorful chicken. The potato wedges were made to be eaten with the delicious broth. It was one of the best dishes I've had at an Italian restaurant. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. Dining there tonight was anything but intimate. There's no longer a piano player but there are now TV's playing college football. The vibe of the restaurant has changed so much. Came across Rosebud from a Google such of a brunch spot in the area. I ordered the hobo skillet (not a fan of the entree name) and my friend ordered the huevos rancheros (at an Italian restaurant SMH). The skillet is beautifully prepared but had no seasoning; salt and pepper is a must. The huevos rancheros was deconstructed...they over poured verde sauce on a tortilla shell which made it soggy at first bite. She didn't finish it. I won't be a return a customer. read more

Cozy Italian restaurant located near the magnificent mile in Chicago. They brought out warm bread with olive oil and cheese. I love warm bread so it was a really nice start to the meal. We had the meatballs and calamari to start. The meatballs came on a bed of polenta and was very good. The calamari came with a really good red sauce. If I had to choose between the two, I would just get the meatballs. For my entree, I had the orichietti with sausage and broccolini. I appreciated having a pasta dish that had both a protein and a vegetable. It was very lightly seasoned with olive oil and a slight spice. It was a bit plain and I'd probably try something else rather than get it again. The restaurant is actually quite big with several levels but tables are places close together so it has that cozy Italian restaurant feel to it. Service was good. Wow we had a DELICIOUS meal and wonderful time at Rosebud for our anniversary! Jaime, our server, was exceptional who offers excellent recommendations and ensures prompt service. I ordered the chicken parm and asked for his advice on pairing it with pasta and wine. He suggested vodka pasta and The Prisoner Cabernet, and the combination was absolutely wonderful. He also recommended Cacio e Pepe with shrimp which was also wonderful! He also highly recommended the banana cream pie with pistachio ice cream and it was also absolutely wonderful. Great service and cute ambience with very generous portion sizes for food however I thought the food was overall very average in comparison to the Italian food scene in Chicago. We tried the eggplant Parmesan and I subbed the penne marinara for penne Alfredo. We also tried the gnocchi vodka. Both dishes were ok. The eggplant was thinly cut and stacked with sauce and a thick layer of cheese in between each eggplant. The vodka sauce wasn't as flavorful and the gnocchi wasn't as soft as I thought it would be. This is a solid Italian option in Chicago. I really appreciate the clear labeling of gluten free items on the menu. The vibe in the restaurant is nice and it is a great spot to bring out of towners for nice Chicago italian. We did have a reservation and had to wait at the front for about 20 minutes for our table, it was very crowded and hard to find room to wait. When we were enjoying our meal we did feel a bit rushed as well. I know this is a popular restaurant but I took a star off because I think reservations could be organized a bit better. Come for the portions. Come for the service. Come for the delightfully taste offerings. Dinner at Rosebud last night with colleagues was memorable, enjoyable, and a true culinary delight. A dear colleague arranged it who has been enjoying their offerings for years and we were poised to enjoy because of his stellar and well-traveled tastes. Our server, Edgar, was very knowledgeable and made sure we were very well taken care of. We dine upstairs by the windows which provided a nice view of the surrounding area. We started with an assortment of salads, including Caesar and Caprese, sampled refreshing white and red wines (I loved the Pinot Grigio from New Zealand's Oyster Bay), and raved about the enormous meatballs which we prepared at our table to share with all. The stuffed mushrooms were savory and filling. I had the Gnocchi in Vodka sauce for the entree. I considered the short ribs with polenta but stepped away after the recommendation by Edgar when I asked. It was a slightly tougher pasta than I'm usually accustomed to--I like a soft, pillowy Gnocchi--but the flavor was great and I got the hint of basil. I sampled a colleagues veal parmesan which was a great accompaniment to my pasta. We didn't have dessert because we all were leaving to head to a dessert reception for our meeting/conference but we hated that we had to pass. Edgar seemed to be a little despondent that we chose to not enjoy dessert there but there will be other times. We ended the evening after delightful conversation and catching up after a day of policy making for our profession sampling each others food, which was so great. Rosebud's is good for dinner with a large group. Celebrate a birthday. Have a romantic dinner. Dine with friends. To be very honest, this was one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had in Chicago. Let me start by saying that we came for a friend's birthday dinner on a Sunday at 4:30pm. When we arrived, we asked where our party was (we made a reservation a week in advance) and the hostess told me and a friend that we could just walk down and check the dining room but she wasn't sure who might be there. It would have been nice to have someone walk us to our friends instead of having us search the restaurant for such an established well known business... the table they sat our party was right next to the bar and not comfortable at all. The bartenders spilled near our seats (apologized) and repeatedly bumped into us. The waitress was one of the worst parts. She was incredibly rude and unkind to everyone, including the birthday girl. We are a very polite group and it was between 4:30-5pm when we all had arrived -- not a busy time AT ALL. She rushed us to order and when we asked her for recommendations she said everything was good and kept rushing us. When the food came, we were asked to pass our plates down to others instead of each of us being served, while seated at a round table. I understand it can be difficult to get around a table but there was room to serve at least half of the table... it felt like a chain restaurant. When it was time to cut the cake (a service we paid $25 for) she insisted cutting the cake for us because the knife was sharp and she didn't want us to cut ourselves. We declined since we wanted to cut our slices per the wants of each person and when she handed us the knife, she repeated again almost mockingly that we should be more careful since it was sharp... we understood this, and it was a normal kitchen knife. All this to say, we wanted to leave as quickly as possible. I found the manager and spoke with him about our experience to which he apologized and offered me to come back and have a comped meal. That's kind but doesn't make up for the absolutely horrid experience. Was it worth $500+? Not at all for me. Giving them 2 stars because the manager was kind but the actual experience was one star. I didn't even mention but the food was mid. I ordered the ravioli and the noodles were overcooked. The sauce tasted bland and I had to add salt. The crab cake and calamari appetizers were just ok. read more

The meatballs were superb; moist, tender and flavorful, with a delicious marinara. The The raviolis came next and easily met my expectations-the pasta was tender and filled with a very creamy ricotta filling. I was dining here last night with my dad when one of the servers, Celia, walked past us. She had the cutest rose pin on her shirt & I complimented her pin. Our food was good but our checkout experience was a bit of a nightmare since we had a big group. As far as the food: it was very yummy! I had the eggplant stack and it was delicious! My husband had the lasagna and also loved it. Everyone really enjoyed their food and drink. They are great at making sure you always have water too. With paying as a big group: they CANNOT split the bill if you don't tell them before you order and if you want to use multiple cards, they have to put an even amount on each card. I've never been to a place where this was the case (they said it'd "crash the system" if they did different amounts?!?). We ended up having to put it all on one card. People in our group left grumpy which was a bummer. However, if you have a smaller group (or if we knew this ahead of time) it would have been amazing! Definitely yummy food. read more
