I came here for dinner with a friend and I had never been here before so I deferred the ordering to them. We started out with the house made focaccia and they served it with olive oil, cheese and tapenade. For dinner, we shared the pecorini al tartufo Nero which was served inside the Parmesan wheel. The sauce was incredible with the truffle and the cream, it was so delicious. I'm drooling still thinking about it. I, of course, had to take some of the focaccia and scraped the saucy goodness from the plate and the dinner was so satisfying. I had no room for anything else so maybe next time I'll learn not to load up on the bread (rookie mistake) and save some room for dessert.

If a restaurant is going to be a little rough around the edges, it really needs to earn it. More on that later. Osteria del Pastaio has the right ingredients for something truly special. However, issues with execution and high prices put a damper on the overall experience. What I Had and My Thoughts: - House-Made Focaccia: The good news is that the bread was cooked through, not the "play-dough" so many places pass off as bread, and it had pleasant olive oil and sun-dried tomato flavors. On the other hand, I felt it lacked the airiness of a great focaccia, becoming simply a solid loaf. The slightly acidic diced tomato on top did earn some points. - Calamari Fritti: The sauce was the calamari's undoing. I loved that these were hot, fresh, and lightly fried with only a thin crust. The squid itself was perfectly cooked and not at all rubbery. The issue is that on their own, they were bland. While there was a tasty tomato sauce, it was so watery that it barely adhered. Getting any on a piece required creating a modern work of art on the plate, which became impractical, especially when sharing with a larger table. - Fresh Maine Lobster Ceviche (special): With this one, I have no notes - it was perfect! I happily devoured this dish like no one's business. The flavors hit all five "receptors" of the tongue, making it the undeniable highlight of the night. - Gnocchi con Ragu di Carne: I fear this dish suffered from the same problem as the calamari: the sauce was too thin to properly adhere. The gnocchi themselves were soft and pillowy, and the braised beef was excellent! It was flavorful, savory, and melted in my mouth--and this is coming from someone who generally doesn't even like braised beef. Being cooked in the sauce, the beef absorbed plenty of flavor. However, because the sauce was watery, the gnocchi barely got any. This necessitated eating it with a spoon (which I did, shamelessly) for maximum enjoyment. As a closing note, the tiny amount of greens, carrot, and Parmesan seemed like afterthoughts. The greens, in particular, left little red stems sticking out of my mouth like a farmer with wheat between their teeth! Non-Food Notes: - Service: I want to give credit to the server for his efficiency. Typical pleasantries were discarded, which led to orders being taken quickly. I'm not saying the service was rude; not at all. I'm saying it was a bit gruff and surly, in the best way possible. When it came to speed, I appreciated that drinks and appetizers came out fast, though mains took longer than I expected. Finally, I liked that the service staff worked as a team. - Vibe: I felt that the vibe was tastefully done. The open ceiling gives the feeling of more space. The brown, gray, and black notes work well and aren't depressing, especially since they bring the focus to the table. This is aided by well-executed lighting, with LEDs illuminating the table and not much else with bright white light. The white tablecloths rounded out the experience. - Value: The jury is still out on this one. Osteria del Pastaio's prices are higher than I would expect. This might have something to do with the Mag Mile location. Still, I judge things based on the amount of sticker shock I feel when the bill comes, and there was definitely some. I think the reason is that the aforementioned execution errors made the dishes less than spectacular, which made the prices less justifiable, in my opinion. Then there was the water... - Water?!: Traffic on LSD meant I was last to my table. There was already a glass bottle of water there, and I saw most tables around me had the same. I thought this was them being "cute" and filling it with tap or filtered water... until I saw a waiter open a sealed one. Then the bill came, at a rate of $5 a bottle. It's better to be smart early: if you're offered still water, ask for tap water instead. Final Verdict: Osteria del Pastaio shines through great proteins and a well-executed atmosphere. However, the aqueous sauces and rough-around-the-edges service meant the overall experience was less than spectacular. All of this, combined with prices that demand a more refined experience, means the only thing truly enticing me to come back is the Lobster Ceviche. While not cheap at $26, the price for that dish is more or less understandable given its quality.

The cheese wheel pasta was the best and most flavorful pasta dish I have ever had in my life. Well worth the money and you get the tableside experience which is a bonus. The carbonara wasn't the greatest but it still was good. I have made better carbonara at home.

Loved the fresh homemade pasta and it was perfectly cooked as well. The standout dish for me was the duck pappadelle- the duck was tender and the flavors were well balanced. I would also recommend their espresso martinis- they're more on the strong side but the espresso flavor was delicious. Of course we had to try the viral pasta in a Parmesan wheel and it was creamy and a great show but the truffle flavor got a little overwhelming. I'd recommend skipping the tiramisu since it was mainly cream and the coffee flavor wasn't strong enough. The lobster ceviche was fresh but i felt like the mango overpowered everything. Service was friendly and attentive. The ambience is also super romantic so this would be a great date night spot.

The butternut squash ravioli was excellent. As was the bruschetta. Lovely dining room on a quieter street off Mag Mile.

Had to come here for the iconic cheese wheel! It is a pretty small place, dimly lit but I like the vibes for an Italian place! All our food and drinks came out very quick! To start I had a dirty martini, this was great! I had a Cosmo later which was also very good. We had the calamari and bread service to start. Bread service was good, I liked that it came with tomatoes to put on. The calamari was ok. We had three of us at dinner and we split the cheese wheel for our main, it was the perfect amount of food between 3 people. It was amazing. Sooo cheesy and the truffle flavor was perfection. Overall a great vibe!

How this place does not have 5-stars is BEYOND ME! The service is exquisite, the drinks are superb and the food was some of the best I've ever had. I would recommend any of the fresh pasta or the ceviche if you are looking for something light.

did this restaurant make me like gnocchi?!? - I have always been confused why someone would get gnocchi when you can get pasta.... but the gnocchi con ragu changed everything for me - every aspect of this dish melted in your mouth. the gnocchi just needed to be pressed with your tongue to melt away. the short rib was the same, soft meat that broke apart with a touch of the fork. the deep rich meaty sauced stuck to each bite like a glaze. - we started with a Caesar to offset the heavy dishes coming next. you can tell they make the own dressing, it's more parm than anchovy heavy. a bit grainy and thicker than usual but not a bad thing, just unique. solid salad but because not anchovy or pepper heavy it wasn't very rememberable or special - the duck pappardelle had way more Duck than it seems from the photos. there was a duck leg than ripped up bits beneath the stack of pasta. the cooked tomato's added a refreshing texture change. - the outdoor seating was super cute and our server was so so kind. perfect snout of attention to enjoy our table conversation but also feel cared for. only qualm is the price of the non meat dishes, pretty insane to think that's what it needs to be at to make a profit! the inside of the restaurant did not match that price tag, so sit outside!

Twirl your fork into pasta perfection at Osteria del Pastaio! This charming spot has quickly become one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Chicago. The housemade noodles are a game-changer--especially when they're tossed tableside in a giant cheese wheel. Yes, it's as indulgent and dreamy as it sounds! Every dish radiates freshness and elegance, but the truffle pasta was the real star for me, bursting with rich, bold flavors that had me savoring every bite. And let me tell you, the Limoncello Martini is a must-try. It's the perfect balance of tart and sweet, truly a chef's kiss in cocktail form. Whether you're here for date night or a special celebration, the cozy, warm ambiance makes it feel like an elevated yet approachable dining experience. Our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. I was practically scraping my plate by the end and already thinking about my next visit before dessert even arrived. This place is an absolute gem! Can't recommend it enough.

If you're looking for authentic Italian flavors, tableside theatrics, and an unforgettable dining experience, Osteria Del Pastaio is an absolute must-visit. From the moment you walk in, the warm, inviting atmosphere sets the stage for a meal that feels both elevated and comforting. The Showstopper - Cheese Wheel Pasta The tableside cheese wheel pasta is hands-down the highlight! They prepare it right in front of you, melting the pasta into a creamy, velvety dream inside a giant wheel of cheese, while burnt rosemary fills the air with an incredible aroma. To top it off, freshly shaved black truffle adds that rich, earthy depth--pure indulgence. Watching the process alone is mesmerizing, but tasting it? Even better. What Else I Loved: Focaccia - Soft, airy, and packed with flavor. Perfect for soaking up every last bit of sauce. Amazing Wine Selection - A thoughtfully curated list with fantastic Italian wines to pair perfectly with any dish. Panna Cotta - Silky smooth, light yet decadent, and beautifully balanced. Tiramisu - Classic, rich, and just the right amount of espresso-soaked goodness. Final Thoughts: Incredible tableside experience with the cheese wheel pasta Authentic Italian flavors & high-quality ingredients Fantastic service & a cozy, elegant ambiance Perfect for a romantic date night or a special dinner with friends This place delivers on both taste and experience, and I can't wait to come back for another round of that cheese wheel magic!

This place is one of the better Italian restaurants in the city - every single pasta dish our group ordered was unique and very flavorful, with the perfect amount of seasonings and sauce. They have the viral cheese wheel and we loved it - they prepare it table side and it tasted amazing - truffle, creamy, and very rich. It was double the price as the other dishes though, which I am not sure is worth it. The only downside was the service - It took 1 hour to get our focaccia appetizer and another 40 minutes to get the food. We weren't checked on for water or anything throughout and they brought the crushed red pepper after we finished eating. If it wasn't for the service, I would go back here often because the pastas were great!

It this like a super fancy place, what should I wear?

You can get away with jeans and a button up. If it's hot I'd say to wear shorts with a short sleeve button up.

    Do you need a reservation?

I highly recommend a reservation, but it's not required. This place gets quite busy especially for dinner.

Do they allow you to bring a bottle of wine if so how much?

Yes and the Corkage Fee is $28.

They light a new candle on your table and it was fun guessing how many hours it takes for the candle to melt all the way down. We came during dinner time and sat inside. We shared the Arancini, usually comes in 3 and they made 4 for us, since there were 4 of us. Very delicious and we all just took our time savoring the flavor. So good and it is also GF made with rice flour. Next I had the Umbricelli con Sugo d'Anatra. House made spaghetti with duck meat. Noodles were firm and didn't twirl on the fork easily. But it was really good. There were plenty of duck meat shredded and chunks. The cherry tomatoes were a bit tart to me, so I didn't eat them all. For dessert we shared the Tortino al Cioccolato Valhrona, like a chocolate lava cake. Very soft and rich chocolate. Had orange pieces throughout. Came with coffee gelato. Also shared the Vanilla bean panna cotta. Smooth creamy and light, reminds me of crème brulee. Had lots of cherries with crumbles of cookies. Both desserts are GF. I actually like the chocolate more... couldn't resist. They cleanup and give you a new plate and or silverware after each course. They are very good at keeping your glass of water refilled. Very friendly staff.

The inside of the restaurant is so nice and cozy, though they also offer covered patio seating if you prefer the outdoors. We sat inside for our 5:00pm reservation for a table of four, which I booked easily ahead of time. What truly sets this place apart is their incredible accommodation for dietary restrictions. Because I have celiac disease and am listed as a vegetarian on OpenTable, the host thoughtfully brought a separate vegan menu right to our table without us even having to ask. Their main menu also has multiple items clearly marked as gluten-free or gluten-free available, and best of all, they use separate fryers to prevent cross-contamination. I let our server know right away that I have celiac, and she reassured me that the kitchen would take every precaution to make sure my food was entirely safe. We started off with the arancini, which is made gluten-free in a separate fryer and was absolutely to die for. For my main course, I had the gluten-free radiatori tossed in a spicy vodka sauce, and it was so good that I ate every single bite. To top it all off, we shared two desserts between us: the panna cotta and the flourless chocolate cake, both of which were delicious. To drink, I enjoyed a refreshing Aperol Spritz followed by a glass of the moscato. From the top-notch allergy safety to the amazing drinks and food, everything was excellent. This is a must-visit spot, especially if you need gluten-free or vegetarian options!

We went from discussing funky wine profiles to diving deep into '80s horror films, which is absolutely my idea of a perfect tangent. Their enthusiasm and curiosity made the whole experience feel personal and spontaneous. As for the wine: unique, surprising, and delicious, even the pours I didn't expect to enjoy. Good Funk leans into exploration in the best way--nothing feels generic or predictable. Every glass had its own personality, and the flight felt like a curated adventure rather than a lineup. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, stylish without being pretentious, and perfect for either a solo wind-down or a lively night out. I'll begin by mentioning the drinks tasted great & the ambiance/overall esthetic and setup of this space is really wonderful. Unfortunately, my low review is because of the obvious distastefulness of some staff who are serving & bartending here. My guests visiting from out of state wanted a stiff drink in the afternoon & from the website photos + reviews, Vol 39 seemed like an awesome place that could accommodate our party with the large sofa seating. I even called ahead to ask about walk-ins of our size to be extra considerate. We received shocking dagger glares from a few staff members which made all eight of us immediately uncomfortable before even being sat. Like we were committing a major crime for thinking we could step foot in here. Empty stack of glasses slammed on the table with a water pitcher placed beside them; "I'll be right back." In a sharp tone. Ok. But not if we're paying $20 per person per cocktail. We were rushed and this attitude persisted, it is lazy.. especially given it was extremely slow.. super surprising for such an elevated establishment. Then, after a long while, we were all asked what we wanted to drink, like a fast casual burger joint. No, "any questions about our selections" or, "may I give some suggestions?" Never came by to check on us once despite the three other two tops inside. We wrapped it up fast since we definitely could choose another location with more attentiveness & basic kindness. We paid, a hefty gratuity in small print on the check which.. you guessed it.. was automatically included but no mention of this tidbit by the server. Maybe this is why we revived all this mean girl energy from the jump? Because they'll still get paid really well regardless? All eight of us have been a part of the service industry and this one stuck out extra frustrating & annoying. Never leave a low review, I'm writing today to management because they will ruin your repeat clientele, seriously. People can find another fabulous cocktail with way better service & vibes in the city. Overall, it was a shame my friends experienced this gross behavior today in the fabulous city of Chicago. Hope the staff does better in the future and works on improving their outlook.
