I should have read the reviews carefully before I went there because I was surprised to find out there were no chairs around the bar. I guess they have recently changed to take out only. It looked like they were accepting phone orders for pick up as well. Although I was disappointed to find out that you cannot dine in (since I wanted to try their pho), my BBQ Pork and Shrimp noodle bowl was great! It literally was ready within a few minutes. Honestly this is the only place where I get my Vietnamese food. They have traditional and flavorful dishes. I'm vegetarian so I love their dry noodle bowl with bbq tofu, as well as their bbq tofu spring rolls. I love that they offer nondairy milk for their boba drinks. Overall, great place! I've been coming here for years and for the price, this place is awesome. Not many asian options in Monterey, and this convenient place is wonderful. It's cash only and they only have about 10 seats at the counter. I love the spring rolls and peanut sauce. I always ask for extra peanut sauce! The bbq chicken rice plate is really good with a saffron infused rice giving it a bring yellow color. Sometimes the chicken can be dry and over cooked but usually it's very tasty and tender. Worst experience ever. I ordered broccoli beef, chowmein, and fried rice. The total price was over $50. Not only is it extremely overpriced for what you're getting but it also has bugs. I was eating and talking with my daughters when I looked down at the to go box and saw that on the beef was a cockroach. I was gagging nonstop and had a strong impulse of wanting to vomit. I still feel that impulse now, and it's been over 2 hours. I don't even know if I had already eaten half of it because it was half of the cockroach there. FOR ALL I KNOW MY DAUGHTERS COULD HAVE EATEN ONE. I went back to the restaurant and asked for a refund, the cashier asked if the whole thing was infected and I answered that I didn't know. He didn't want to look inside the container and just snatched all of them right out of my hands and rudely answered "okay okay here's your money." He didn't even apologize and he threw the money on the counter. I got home and checked the amount of money and realized that he didn't even give me the proper amount. I am super disappointed, we're here trying to help small businesses to stay open and they still have the audacity to be rude and not apologize. Having cockroaches inside the food just proves that they aren't taking precautions and that they don't cover the food nor keep the kitchen clean. I honestly do not recommend this place. This is a legit community table "bar". This is the original location and it's always busy like the Marina location. I come here on Tuesdays when the Marina location is closed. I order: Chicken Pho or Combo pho (haven't ordered the vegetarian one from here). I also order: Pork Egg roll & thai tea boba (and I have to dilute it, way too sweet, don't let your kid have a whole one!) Since it's so small and someone is constantly walking by you to tend to other patrons it's easy to get a servers attention. Didn't like the half order was still $4. Rare Beef and Meat Ball pho - decent broth and liked the meat balls. Beef was a bit overcooked despite the rare beef description. Locals move in and out of here vying for an empty stool or picking up large to-go orders. My daughter and I shared the chicken chow mein. The bok choy and green onions were freshly cooked. My boyfriend enjoyed his BBQ chicken over rice, made extra spicy to order. For all the complaints about cleanliness and crowding, it's a hole in the wall for cheap delicious Vietnamese food. I ordered the 5 Spice Chicken Noodle dish while she ordered the Rare Beef Pho. For dessert, we ordered fried banana with vanilla ice cream. I liked the flavor of the dish but didn't think it was "spicy" which was probably why I liked it as much as I did. Good portion, things were cooked well and relatively decent flavors. Very good food! So good, actually, that I don't care how small this place is. I've been to this place a couple of times now. I was always lucky to have found a spot for one person. They only have bar seating and the place doesn't accommodate more than 10 or 12 people. If you're very hungry or in a group of more than 2 I would recommend take out. Easy parking. As for the food. The Chicken Pho (Pha Ga) is the best I ever had. Also, Chow Mein and Spring rolls at another occasion tasted great. Prices are on the low side, especially considering the HUGE portion size. read more
