I ordered the mapo tofu over rice and it was shockingly good and huge. I could only eat half and couldn't stop eating because it was so tasty and piping hot. This restaurant has been around since 1991 for a reason. We came today for lunch. Everything was so good. We ordered fried udon, fried flat noodles, and soup noodles. Nothing was disappointing. You order at the desk, and pick up the food when the beeper beeps. No hassle. Did not get to try their drinks today, but there are definitely lots of choices. This place used to be so busy and poppin a few years back in my college days. I have been coming here strictly for their Bubble Tea. I'm not gonna lie. It's always been pretty consistent. However the Customer Service here loses major points. I'm not saying the entire staff is unfriendly, but the guy who usually works there, I'm assuming the manager, is very unfriendly. I've asked a simple question of whether or not they offer spare ribs. And the guy scoffed at me and said spare ribs isn't usually an authentic Chinese food. But we do have barbecue pork, which is right there with the picture on the menu. I felt a little belittled And baffled. It was only a question and he took it to another level. Like excuse me, I didn't know this was authentic Chinese cuisine as it offers 90% of the dishes I would find at any Chinese food spot. I haven't been inside to order my drinks or food for a while, I've always had my boyfriend go in and pick stuff up for me. My boyfriend had always said the guy there is straight out rude. But I didn't believe him until now. It makes me not want to go back because of him. The food and drinks are pretty good, but I wish that one guy did not work there. If you're having a bad day, stay home if you have a bad attitude, don't be working upfront deal dealing with customers. Simple as that. read more

A Rutgers hallmark. I visited with a Hong Kong native and he gave it 5 out of 5. I'm no Canto kid myself, but I have to agree. The food was fresh, flavorful, and plentiful. It wasn't too oily and you could tell it was made to order. I had sampled my friend's duck and it was decadent. Their bubble tea is mid, but compared to the prices for bubble tea elsewhere on campus, it gets the job done. The location is spacious with plenty of seating. Plus the mini arcade is a nice touch. A big group of us decided to hit Noodle Gourmet last minute and the staff were nice enough to take our order even though the kitchen was going to close in a couple of minutes. Noodle Gourmet fed a whole generation through their college years and the food is still very good. The pandemic has definitely changed how things operate and Noodle no longer has servers and has changed to a take-out model and seat yourselves to eat. It may be a little outdated but the food and workers are still as great as they were 10 and 20 years ago! Definitely order to-go! Our favorite has always been the beef with string beans and garlic sauce and beef with tomatoes and eggs. This place is one of the reasons why I love living in New Jersey- and would be devastated if I had to leave- that's how good it is! It is a hidden treasure in the community that offers amazing Asian cuisine. Unlike other take out places that are quick but unhealthy, this place is fast and fresh. It is superb in every way! The best Asian "fast food" I have ever had. I always order the Udon Noodles with pepper, which are absolutely heavenly. The portion size is generous and satisfying. The atmosphere is adorable, as it is located near a college campus. I have been here countless times and never get tired of it. I am not into bubble tea, but I have heard great things about it here. I tried it once and it was decent, but I am not an expert on bubble tea. This place never disappoints and always has a lively vibe. They recently added a mini arcade area, which I had fun playing while waiting for my food before they closed. Really nostalgic place, can get good noodles here any day. The staff are almost family and we've been coming back since collage days.

I have to say that this spot has the best contactless pick up I've seen since we've shut down. I love the way everything is laid out by name or delivery service so you don't have to come in contact with anyone in the restaurant. The food was flavorful and it provide a great portion for the price. My only complaint was how greasy the vegetable rolls were. They were soooo good (and I would go back for them again and again) but the oiliness was a bit of a turn off. read more

I love Noodle Gourmet! I've been coming here for years! They have the best bubble tea in town!

The endless bubble teas and slushies flavors are popular for Rutgers college students, but I usually come here for their oriental style noodles. The food reminds of my Hong Kong background. There's a 10% coupon found in some Chinese newspaper/magazine. The prices are pretty cheap and you'll definitely be full. The restaurant is comfortable and ordinary. There's only one waiter for the entire place, but the place is fairly small and most people seem to do takeout orders anyway. The waiter is nice and brings you these fried Chinese strips if you dine-in. I thought the cashier was a little rude because I was standing at the register ready to order for awhile and she was just texting on her phone in plain view. It's pretty hard to not acknowledge someone standing two feet away from you. The place is located on Easton Avenue and the only parking available is street parking, which can be hard to find during busy traffic times. read more

Was on the lookout for late night bubble tea after dinner. We knew that this area would be the perfect place to find restaurants that were open late. And also this place has a very extensive menu of different bubble tea so that is also why this place was a good choice. We got here pretty late and there was a line which was expected and it is filled with college students. There is some seating available but many people just coming in grabbing something to go. We stood in the line and was just overwhelmed with the different flavors of bubble tea and toppings. We finally got to order and I felt rushed to know what we were ordering. The employee seemed to have a bit of an attitude as well. But it didn't bother me much. We waited about 5 minutes after ordering to get our bubble tea. I didn't feel too adventurous and had just ordered honeydew bubble tea with tapioca. The honeydew flavor tasted okay with the tapioca being cooked a little on the bland side. It was just okay. My old favorite from Rutgers days... On a recent pass-by, I was magnetically driven off-course to this humble joint, the greatest of all time noodle shop in NB! My favorite item to order is the "Oriental" noodle soup with two toppings - sliced roast pork and shrimp wonton but because I wanted something more filling, I went to my next favorite off the rice platter menu - the D40, Beef and Eggplant in Garlic sauce, hoping it'd still be as good as I had it 20 years ago. And yes, yes it was still that good - portions were still generous, overflowing with large chunks of delicious, garlic-sauce-slobbered eggplant wedges and tastily seasoned beef. I could've asked for tea service but stuck with water - you defnitely can so do so if you want. Only thing that really surprised me was the price hike. I was put off that my 2-topping noodle bowl now costs a whopping $9.45. It used to be $3.25 in 1998. A 200%(!) increase in 20 years. I understand prices need to rise over time, but I think it's now overpriced. The whole reason I loved the noodle soup was because it was like appetizer price which was fitting because it's not as filling as a rice platter. Now it's priced same as a rice platter. Would've been better if it stayed at $7ish. Lastly, I'd recommend saying "Asian" instead of "oriental" in the menu - it's an outdated term from like the colonial era that can be viewed as offensive to Asians. Firstly, I'm a major "foodie" and I LOVE Chinese food. I was originally introduced to Noodle Gourmet back in 2008 by my nurse while at RWUJH. I dreamed about your Shrimp & Lobster Sauce with your pillowy-Chow Fun noodles, but I left the area and parking is a BEAR. When food delivery service expanded their mileage, I quickly ordered but today reminded me why I haven't ordered from here in awhile. Starting off with the delivery - Packaging is awful. When it gets to you, sauces are open and spilled all over, dietary requests aren't followed, and careful when you open your containers because whatever is in it, spills all over you and anything else in the vicinity. Missing egg roll (again). BOTH (ordered 2) Steamed pork dumplings came with a container (inside the container the dumplings are in) with the top smashed and halfway off, spilling this red dye liquid all over the food. No regular soy sauce offered/included in bag. In the garbage they go. I've never seen wonton soup (again) come with cloudy broth (which tasted like bean sprouts water....) and half the QT container was filled with bean sprouts. I didn't order "bean sprout" soup with wontons. In the garbage it goes. Chicken & broc for dietary reasons was requested with white sauce and it came in brown sauce. In the garbage it goes. Egg drop soup looked delish, tasted like egg drop ware soup with a dash of salt. Eck - in the garbage it goes. I remember your chow fun noodles were always the best around. I ordered the shrimp & lobster sauce chow fun. Lobster sauce was tasty, but the shrimp were overcooked, they were hard to swallow. Your pillowy-wonderful chow fun noodles were a solid block, and there was no separating them. In the garbage it goes. Not even going to try the general Taos..... I'm going to chock this up to a $120+ loss and there are soooo many Chinese food establishments that do a better job. Reading all the reviews again today - sounds like this place needs a complete overhaul. Thoughtfulness all around is needed. Driving through the campus recently, there are so many NEW places to eat from the original fat cats to grease traps. Whatever your flavor, there are more choices. Just something to think about. Noodle Gourmet is a Rutgers staple. Prior to covid any time you walked in the place was bustling with Rutgers student and staff. Since covid they have nicely arranged a system whereby they have the menu on the wall near an intercom. You choose your items and let the counter person know, and they cook it up and bring it out to you all packaged up ready to go and you pay before taking your bag, It is practically contactless aside from the money (or credit card exchange) transaction. The soups are the best items in the shop and are very tasty and filling. You can select several different options and customize them, and they are all good. I haven't had one I haven't liked yet. The rice dishes range from excellent to average take-out (I particularly like their beef with tomato and egg! Omg yum) and the food is always fresh and made to order, and decently priced. The waitstaff sometimes seems a little bored, but they are never rude and are efficient and quick for the most part. If you're in the area and are looking for basic Chinese food, this place is recommended. If you're looking for really good noodle soups, I highly recommend. read more

Not sure why it has taken me this long to write a review for NG but I've been coming in for 11 years and I love it. I first discovered it while I went to Rutgers but I still try to visit now that I've graduated many years later. Richard is the owner here and he's great - very friendly and always welcoming. The restaurant could use a little renovation as the chairs and tables are looking pretty old and not as comfy as they use to be. Food: Of course it's all about the food. My favorite dish is Sweet Corn and Chicken over rice.... you may think it's an odd choice but I love it. No one else makes it like they do and you hardly see this offered at other asian places. I also love their California noodles - crispy and soft at the same time. I love all their noodles here! Bubble tea is good too! This place holds pretty strong sentimental value for me but it's also because they never let me down with their delicious foods. Not expensive at all...always a great deal! read more

Good portions and excellent selection and flavors. I honestly can't remember the noodle dish I got here the last visit but I don't remember having a bad meal. If I were to venture a guess, I would say I got #11 and #11 was bomb! Spicy minced pork over yellow noodles. Noodle Gourmet really isn't a gourmet spot. Most of the customers are from nearby Rutgers University. Grab a menu and order at the counter. The servers will bring the food to you. Today I ordered their roast duck & wonton flat rice noodle soup. The duck here is always fresh, plump, meaty, and the skin; the perfect balance of fat and oil. Yes, I like my meat with fat attached to it. It gives it that buttery melt in your mouth taste. They will not give you bony pieces like some other places. I recently tried their hot peanut milk tea (not very sweet) and have been hooked on this drink. I order it every time I come here now. College staple. My favorite place to go to when I was an undergrad student. I still find myself coming back here whenever I'm in the area. I love them for their noodle soups, shrimp rolls, and slush bubble tea. My boyfriend's favorite dishes are the pepper steak with onion, and chicken wings. It's a good place to get Chinese take out food and they're open usually till midnight depending! You can still sit inside and eat but they'll give you your food in to go containers. 4 Stars because: it offers delicious Cantonese style Chinese food at cheaper prices. I lived in Hong Kong for a year and when I left I was so sad to leave behind the food! When I stumbled upon Noodle Gourmet, I was reunited with some of those dishes and have been thankful to them ever since. For your regular Americanized Chinese dishes (like beef and broccoli, sesame chicken, fried rice, ect) they do those top notch too. So if that's what you want I still highly recommend this place. But ah, it's the Cantonese style dishes that have my heart here. It's rarer to find places that make these dishes in Central NJ and make them right on top of that. Noodle Gourmet does both. In general if I had to describe it, Noodle Gourmet dishes are not oily and instead focus on bringing out the flavors of the ingredients and the sauce. That's what separates it from other Chinese fast food joints. My Favs: Beef with Tomato in egg sauce over rice, Chicken with Sweet Corn over rice, Beef stew soup with egg noodles, Gourmet Chow Udon (altho it can be oily sometimes), Beef Chow Fun, Roast Pork over Rice, Eggplant with Beef in garlic sauce over rice, and Macao spicy chicken over rice. My sister likes their sesame chicken also. Service: Most people are aware of the generalization to not expect great customer service from Chinese restaurants. Personally though I've had okay experiences with everyone here. They're all fast at their job so it can feel rushed and impersonal to some ppl but they get the job done so I don't have any complaints. Chefs: Just a note that very seldomly the dishes are not up to par with how it is normally made. I suspect a substitute chef. Perhaps when the main chef needs a day off? It is rare but has happened and I can tell right away. One night both the usual dishes me and my sister got just tasted off and we didn't eat at Noodle for awhile after that. But we couldn't stay away for too long and luckily it hasn't happened in a while since then. Bubble Tea: For bubble tea fans, they serve your run of the mill bubble tea here too! Full line of flavors in slush, cold or hot. Don't expect real tea flavors to come out in your drink though. I doubt any goes in. It's more of just the powders, sugar, non dairy creamer and syrups, which is how most venues make it. Also, they have the lid machine that seals on the tops which makes them perfect to transport with take out. It's so convenient to order one with my food and drink it as a dessert afterwards when I'm in the mood for something sugary. I'm really glad Noodle Gourmet is a Rutgers staple. Before COVID, Noodle Gourmet was the hangout spot for my clinical group during nursing school! Boba was average but they do have fun flavors and a long list of options. Food was 4/5 - not exactly the best but definitely enough for comfort and for filling up. As for COVID, they have a really good contactless system and I felt safe ordering food from them! This used to be my favorite spot back in the 90s when I was attending Rutgers. My wife and I frequent this place via take outs, eat ins, deliveries. Always good and a lot of fond memories. Having a chance to visit New Brunswick recently I figure I need to revisit. What a mistake. While the decor never changed since the 90s which is crazy in itself, the service and the food also went down hill. Imagine if a restaurants food, decor, and service are all bad...what's the redeeming value? My favorite food back in the day was either beef chow fun or chicken curry. Portion was generous and very tasty. Even the delivery person was nice. In my recent encounter the food is now generic Panda Express food. Portion is small and proteins are skimpy. Maybe the property tax in NB is higher now. The service is shameful too. The young lady behind the counter roll her eyes all night long with customer. That higher than thou attitude is criminal, especially in the service industry. She must be the owner's daughter otherwise I can't imagine hiring someone to be the face of the place with this level of negativity. Losing customer. Well they lose me for sure. This restaurant is just one of those typical Chinese takeout food place. The food is ok, but not bad for a cheap/quick meal or snack. If this is your first time here, you should try their dream taro bubble tea. It's a slush and it's always everyone's favorite. This place is also open later than pretty much every other bubble tea places around here, so if you ever crave bubble tea late at night then this place is the way to go. There's nothing much special or too bad about this place. Parking might be a bit hard to find since it's right off of Rutgers and you'd have to find a street parking. They also have a credit card limit, but you can also venmo them if you have no cash. read more
