There were other parties behind us and we were the only ones told this. Will never be trying this place I don't support places that discriminate. We were the only Latinos in the restaurant. Woke up Saturday morning craving beef noodle soup and finished lunch well-satisfied. When we first arrived a little after 11 AM, there were only 2 other couples in the restaurant. I was a bit hesitant given how empty the restaurant was but decided to give it a try. The menu and order sheet were in both Chinese and English, and the menu also helpfully included pictures for every dish. The mala noodle was crossed out, which was odd considering the soft opening sticker on their front door. I wasn't sure when they opened, but it seemed it was too soon after opening to have an item crossed out already. We ordered the signature Lanzhou noodle with extra thin noodles (cannot resist chili oil!), original Lanzhou noodle with wide noodles (seemed to be knife-cut), seaweed salad, and lamb skewers. The beef in the photos didn't look that great, so I was surprisingly pleased when they turned out soft and tender. The seaweed salad was refreshing, and the lamb was well-seasoned without any 'gamey' taste. The servers were polite and attended to us well, and the main dining room was clean and decorated Chinese modern. There was also a small separate room to the side for any of you who might be looking for a private dining room. The bathroom, however, could do with some updating or at least some basic fixing. It looked like whoever used the stall next to mine gave up on the weak flush toilet. With all the competing restaurants in the area, this place is definitely worth a visit! read more

This place is amazingly good. It was my first time here and I order the signature beef noodle soup. Huge portions, could not eat it all as much as I wanted to. You can custom order the thickness of your noodles, which blew my mind! The soup literally tasted like someone's grandma was in the back cooking up homemade soup so you know it's fresh and has wholesome ingredients! Their menus are even nice. They are leather bound and clean, along with the rest of the restaurant. Now every time it's rainy weather season I crave this soup. I had shrimp fried rice, stewed beef noodle soup, chili oil noodles, green beans, and a couple of Chinese flatbreads. But then my wife and I got severe food poisoning lasting 2.5+ days. Severe stomach cramps. We narrowed it down to the chili oil noodles, which we shared and which also contained raw bean sprouts, which seemed the most plausible culprit. Could have also been chili oil, if it had been left in hot or room temperature conditions for long enough (days or weeks). I called the restaurant the next day and told them of these facts, and left my number, and they promised to call back. They did not. So, 4 stars for the food. Minus 2 stars for the food poisoning and failure to follow up. [added 2 stars after further communications with owner] Dun Huang owners: I don't know if it was the bean sprouts that had e.coli or salmonella or any of the other usual suspects, but you should make sure your staff washes them thoroughly. read more

The new Irvine location is as good as the Rowland Heights one. Very spacious and clean interior. We've done both dine-in and to-go. Service is good and the overall food quality is as expected. The beef pita sandwich is juicy on the inside. My husband loves it. I like their extra thin noodles. We've had their signature beef noodle and the Shaozi noodle. I'll start off by saying we did not plan to come here... But me and my roommates were in the area and we're looking for a place to eat. I am super glad we came across Dun Huang because it was definitely a delicious surprise. Apparently this was their soft opening so the place was not packed but... However, I do suspect that they will find themselves packed on a daily basis. The environment- there's a fun new age theme with the restaurant. The mixture of warm and cool textures with a wide seating arrangement. It was kind of interesting because when I sat down in my chair I kind of slid into the chair since The seat itself was inclined. They are also abiding by covid safety precautions and they do offer takeout so I highly suggest if you do not want to dine in definitely take something to go. The service- The stuff here was very on top of making sure we had what we needed. They were constantly making sure our cups were filled with water and even our teapot was constantly filled with hot water. I definitely appreciated that !! The food- this is probably one of the very first restaurants that I could say the food had this amazing balance to each dish. I got the sweet and sour pork rib and It was really delicious. There was no flavor that was overpowering and each flavor lingered in your mouth. We also got the lamb skewers which also had this really delicious smoky taste to them and a fine crisp to the meat with a very light flavor. I then got there number four noodle entry. Now is very surprised with this dish because it reminded me so much of albondigas. It's one of my all-time favorite Mexican soups to make myself. so it was really interesting to kind of have this fusion of noodles and my favorite soup. The flavors were so delicious and I cleared the bowl despite being full. My roommates each got different noodle entries both were amazingly delicious. Dun Huang's noodles are also made in house and the amazing thing is they absorb the flavor of the broth and every ingredient within it. I honestly think that's really what did it for me was the fact that when you ate the soup you really absolutely tasted everything. I was very surprised when we had gone to this restaurant because I didn't really know what to expect. I know they're testing the water is right now to see what works on the menu and what doesn't but I will honestly say there wasn't anything I had here that was not delicious. I will find myself going back and enjoying other options of the menu since I really want to explore the flavors that they work with. Was really pleasantly surprised by this place. The food was very clean and tasty. I love how it reminds me of this style of cuisine that I've eaten overseas. Sichuan, Lanzhou style cuisine can be spicy and numbing without being oily, and Dun Huang has totally achieved this. We had: Mung Bean noodles which I thought were very delicious. We usually go to Sichuan Impressions for this dish and this one is comparable, though different. Signature Beef noodles: nice light, but flavorful broth. The best thing here are the various types of hand pulled noodles. The soup noodles do have one negative thing is that the longer it takes for you to eat them, the softer they get. Dun Huang cold noodles which were some of the best I've had in OC is delicious without being greasy and the noodles are perfectly textured. Great consistency. I would come here just for the springy noodles alone. Okra salad: really refreshing and I like to take bites of this in between the noodles. They have a version at JA JiaoZi and I love both of them. Decent beef noodle with a variety of choices available for noodle size (thin, flat, etc), which you don't see at many places. Not that spicy to be fair and I found myself having to add more chili. Flavor was solid if a bit light but the noodles were fresh and firm with enough chew. Beef was quite thin. Lamb burger was very good and flavorful. Crispy flat bread was a good appetizer even though it arrived after rest of food. Best was the lamb skewers which had plenty of meat, not too much fat, and a good spice blend. Service was inconsistent and from some waiters, just disinterested. Lamb burger must've sat before someone delivered it to the table bc it was a bit lukewarm. I've only been here once, so I'm not sure if this is a fair assessment. Overall, I think the restaurant is okay. The service was alright, and the food was average. Nothing to blow me out of the broth. Set up: it's very spacious, occupying the prior spot of Chef Hung. It's situated at the junction of a turn, so it's not easily visible from the parking lot. They have ample spacing outside and inside for covid six-feet distancing. Service: even though it was pretty empty when we dined here, there were some delays in seating and in service. Food: I got the beef noodle soup. Broth was bland and very light. Noodles were good , though. They were firm with good thickened and chew. Came during soft opening. The service is a little awkward - they said we can sit outside but only at 2 person tables, otherwise they'd have to give us To-Go boxes. So we sat inside, but then some of the items still came To-Go stlye? Also, they drop off a paper menu to fill out, but when they pick it up, they have to go through the noodle selections (5 kinds of noodles) and confirm each item... So maybe just take my order the first time then and keep it contactless? Don't get me wrong the food is great! I'm a fan and so glad they have this in Irvine now. The other location is in Rowland, so this is much more convenient. The noodle texture is awesome! We got the signature Lanzhou beef noodle (THICCCC), the cold noodle, the zha jiang mian, the skewers, and the spicy lamb sandwich. So good! The weakest dish was the zha jiang mian. The temperature was weirdly coldish/warm and the dish was super oily. All the lamb items were perfect and the cold noodle is worth coming back for. I would definitely come here regularly over any of the other new skewer places in Irvine. I just wish they had an alcohol menu. Maybe visit. Maybe don't. I don't want to wait to get seated lol. As a fan of beef noodles soup, I was extremely disappointed here. The proclaimed hearty broth was purely soy sauce. The beef chunks were dry and tasteless. The hand pulled noodles were great - if I wanted soba. I thought the burger was flavorful but the meat was dry. We also tried the lamb skewer - nothing special, just salted meat. The service here is frustrating. It was dinner time but the place wasn't even half full. It took more time to flag down someone to take down our order than for the time to bring out our food. Does this make any sense? When we were ready to leave, how many times do I have to ask for the bill? After the 5th time, we got impatient and walked and waited at the cash register. Dun Huang is a city in northwest China and its regional influences reflect in their menu. Apparently this is a chain from the east coast that started its first location in Rowland Heights last year and opened here in the infamous Diamond Jamboree square two days ago. Currently in their soft opening, they said they're serving everything on their menu. I got the signature Lanzhou beef noodle and large lamb skewer. The Lanzhou beef noodle is just as you'd expect: a mild but flavorful clear broth with a not overly oily tongue-numbing Sichuan peppercorn chili oil. Thin pieces of beef shank and their standard noodles. I didn't realize there were choices of noodle widths (I'm a bad Asian) until after I ordered. Also got the lamb skewer, which is about on par with what'd you expect from western Chinese lamb skewers with the fennel and cumin spiced roasted lamb on a skewer. No real strong smokiness, but I actually don't mind that it doesn't. I'll be back to try the rest of their menu. read more

This is strictly take-out review, because well, covid-19 is still alive. Anyways, was waiting for this one to open for a while, and I saw a review pop out yesterday stating they have soft opened. So order lunch today to give it a try! Packaging is great! Toppings, noodles, soup, chili oil all packed separately, I had a sip of the soup before I mixed everything together. Wow! That sip took my back to China! Very rich flavor and definitely authentic Lanzhou taste! Thin sliced beef is very tasty too! I got the flat noodle. Noodle itself is good! Chewy and but absorbed tons of flavor. Also orders the lamb skewers, pack of 5. I finished them before I can take a photo, oops. Only suggestions is, the soup can be a little warmer/hotter, not sure if it is because of the weather today or strictly liability reasons, but I like my soup hot. Well there is a good 10-15 minute between the drive so that could be a factor too. Highly recommend! I was craving for this flavor for so long and they definitely delivered it! Let me start off by saying that this was my 3rd stop (but not the last stop) after Coco Ichibanya and Pepper Lunch. I only had one night to try a few of the places in Diamond Jamboree since I am not from the area. Some say "hunger is the best spice"- so if you are not hungry, the food won't taste as good. Well, I wasn't that hungry by the time I arrived at Dun Huang. But hey, please don't stop reading! Great service. I was surprised to see 3 people working the floor and each of them attended my table at least once. I swear, they have a radar of the dining area for whenever a table might need attention. I'm pretty sure I was in and out within 20 mins. Signature Lanzhou Beef Noodles had more chili oil than I would like. The broth was light in flavor but I like the simplicity. The noodles were decent, I highly recommend the thick noodles for more texture. Presentation - A disaster. My first time criticizing food presentation on yelp. Usually I don't really care. As long as the food tastes good, I'm a fan. Egg - One tip on the side of the egg was gone and there's a nice thick Fault Line running across the surface of the egg. It's fine if this is home cooking but to serve it at this kind of venue is lowkey unacceptable. Also, the placement of the egg confuses me. Why is it in the center of the bowl?! Usually the egg is placed on the side so it doesn't push down on what's underneath. Cilantro - You want the cilantro to be in the center of the bowl to pull the eyes. It's the only greens in the dish, there is no reason why you want it floating on the side. That would be a whole lot better than that egg in the center. Noodles: Although it was pushed down by the egg on top, the cook should "lift/pull" the noodle upward after the soup is poured to give it more volume. I think the dish would look better if we are able to see more of the yellow noodles beneath the red broth. It'll add more color. The side ingredients would also be elevated since it'd propped by the noodles underneath. Honestly, I don't think this would be this big of a problem if that stupid egg wasn't in the middle. Or maybe this is how the dish is supposed to look, I am not sure. Also, I think it might be a good idea for people to add their own chili oil. I ordered Six Alleys on doordash and they had chili on the side instead of in the soup for the same dish. Pork Pita - same meaty flavor as Six Alley but the bun was more toasted (a huge plus!). The hamburger pita bun was cut like a Gua Bao, which means after each bite you take, there will be less meat the following bite... I didn't realize it at first since I ate the pork pita out of the bag and never took the whole thing out. Needless to say, I was a bit upset with myself when I got to the end and there was still a good portion of the bun left but very little amount of meat. This meaty dish is heavy by itself, you'd definitely want something light to go with it. Lamb Skewer - Amazing! The only thing I would come back for. It's well seasoned and perfectly cooked. Contrary to some of the other reviews, I think it's reasonably priced for the portion they serve. I would definitely swing by to pick-up a skewer the next time I visit Diamond Jamboree Shopping Center. This is the worst 4 star review I've written. The lamb skewer and the service saved them from 3 stars. That damn egg lost them a star... It's the most despicable egg I've seen in my life!!! read more
