Excellent dishes overall especially the hot pot with beef & string beans. Love the stir fry egg plant. Great service & very friendly wait staff. Busy as usual ambiance but great service

This is located at a shopping center next to H-Mart so plenty of parking. Ordering is self-service through a QR Code provided. Service is fast and staff were accomodating. We had shrimp wonton soup (a little bit on saltier side) Popcorn chicken is good, crispy & meat is tender. Pork belly skewers serve in cute box platter. Beef Rolls were flavorful in a light wrap. Dan Dan noodles always is good and satisfying. Beef Noodle Soup is my favorite, it was flavorful and noodle is perfectly done.

I have seen multiple locations of Northern Café around and I finally got to try it out for myself. This location is in Irvine, in the Westpark shopping area, near H-Mart, Yuk Dae Jang and The Cut. They welcomed me in to sit at any empty table. There was a QR code at the table to scan, but I think they also go around and take the orders. I already entered the majority of my order by the time someone came by, so I just finished my order on my phone. Since it was my first time here I ordered a lot to get a variety and to-go what I couldn't finish. Charcoal Grilled Chicken Hearts ($3.99) - Comes with 2 skewers, with 4 hearts on each. They overdid it a bit on the seasoning. They brought it out on a whole board when I only got 2 skewers. A bit dry cause they opened up the heart instead of leaving it whole. Sauteed Bok Choy with Garlic ($13.99) - A healthy addition to the meal. I like that there was a generous amount of garlic. Scallion Pancake ($7.99) - Interesting presentation because they put it on a platter where the scallion pancake covered 2/3 of the long plate. It was crispy and tasty, but a tad more expensive than other scallion pancakes of the same quality and quantity served at similar restaurants. Xiao Long Bao | Juicy Pork Dumplings ($12.99) - Comes with an order of 8. Contains peanuts. I don't feel like the peanuts were needed with this plate, but it might be a regional touch. The skin was on the thicker side, but it was as juicy as the name promised. Pork Wontons in Spicy Sauce ($11.99) - Not too excited about these. I usually like the pork wontons in spicy sauce at other places. These were okay but not great. Sesame Balls ($5.99) - I like it. Served with 6 small sesame balls. There was red bean filling. It really hit the spots for my cravings. Overall they were about average tasting compared to restaurants of similar offerings. Service was minimal but of the interactions I had they were positive.

First time here and brought me and my team (about 22 of us). About 2 weeks before my planned visit I called and made a reservation for a Sunday 1pm. They typically don't take reservations on the weekend but they were able to accommodate, which I'm insanely grateful for. Staff was very nice about it and confirmed the reservation with me a few times too! Once arrived, they already had the tables set up and sat us right away. It's not the biggest restaurant. Maybe able to accommodate about 50 people at once? So we ended up taking almost half of the restaurant! We were split into 3 different tables and food came out very fast. We could order from the QR code or order with a server. Food was so so good and hot when it came out. I especially loved the sesame cold noodles and spicy wontons but you honestly could not go wrong with any of them. Overall, we had a really great experience. Parking was easy, staff was super nice, food was delicious! I loved it here! Again I've never dined in at Northern Cafe before but I'll be sure to come back and come back soon.

I have been here twice to pick up food to go and the food and service has been very good. For the pork dumplings I was disappointed it didn't come with ginger. Instead, they provided black vinegar which ended up leaking out of its container. Other than that, the dumplings are good with soy sauce and sesame oil if you have any at home. The Sautéed Bok Choy has a good amount of garlic and is good on its own or with a side of extra white rice. The Garlic Pork Ribs is very flavorful and is well fried. It is cut into small pieces and has a bit too many bones though. I would recommend this place for good Chinese food! Depending on the time of day, parking is plentiful and there are spaces exclusive for pick up only.

In the Irvine or South OC area and looking for an affordable weekday Chinese lunch combo? Northern Cafe has you covered with 15 stir-fry dish options starting at $15, and each combo comes with soup and a drink. Portions are generous -- honestly enough to share or save for to-go. If you're craving something lighter, their dumpling special starts at just $7, with 6 pieces. Highly recommend the juicy lamb dumplings and juicy mala beef dumplings -- flavorful and rarely found. Also recommend the stir-fry pork if you love spicy IG: socalhkfoodies

Nice spot for Chinese comfort food! Food is great quality and pricing is very reasonable. Highly recommend the combo (select three items at the counter), beef noodle soup and beef roll. The waitresses working here are pretty nice and you order by scanning the QR code and selecting your items via your phone. I like the self service model but I can see why some people would appreciate more engagement/recommendation from the staff.

Rating: 8.5/10 Our go to restaurant for reliable Chinese food in Irvine. The inside has many seats, and you sit down then order on the QR code. The interior is lively and has sports/Chinese food videos playing on the tv. The lamb skewers are very tasty but the pieces are very small so make sure to order 10. Chong qing chicken is amazing, chicken pieces are big and seasoned perfectly. Cold dish section has a variety of choices, and they give huge portions. All dishes are pretty authentic Chinese food, but nothing mind blowing, overall 8.5/10

We've been here several times and it never disappoints. We came on Christmas Eve and got lucky with the last table and didn't have to wait. Some servers are more friendly than others. We got lucky again and was greeted by a nice one this time! We both ordered different dishes we have tried yet. We both enjoyed our dishes. Next time if I want hot pot though, I will stick to the spicy beef hot pot instead of the Golden Soup beef pot.

Food here has not disappointed, always meets expectations and more! They have a variety of dishes, from noodles, rice, skewers to dumplings. I got the lamb skewers which has just the right amount of cumin. Some other places have it too overpowering. I also got the chicken fried rice and the chicken is very tender wiith a good amount of meat as well. The juicy beef dumpling was also made fresh, with just the right amount of flavor and soup inside. They have a few stir fry vegetable options, and I got the bok choy this time. It has that nice wok taste, but it is heavy on the garlic which does add to the taste but also can be too much if you don't like garlic. They have a cold dish section, where you can choose 3 sides for $14.99 or $12.99 if all 3 sides are vegetarian. They are very generous with these portions as well! Service is great, you order through their QR code system and food comes out fast. Keep in mind that even though they open late, they only serve grilled and skewers items after 9:30 pm. Definitely a good to spot if you're looking for some good Chinese food or skewers! Plenty of parking in the shared plaza.

The second Irvine restaurant at the corner of Alton Parkway and Culver is a much-welcomed addition, as it is a lot closer and more convenient than the UCI location. We've tried a lot of different dishes, and I have to say that most things were good, and a few were outstanding. One of the shining stars is the scallion pancake which was aromatic and flavorful. The edges were crispy while the pancake itself was soft. There were enough scallions, but not overwhelming. There XLB's are larger than those that you'll find at most places, and more importantly, each of them contained a nice spoonful of soup. The skins were thin, and the meat fillings were tasty. Based on the size and the quality, these are great values, especially in Irvine. We also tried the potstickers which were also delicious but not outstanding. The Shanghai stir-fried rice cakes were also good, but I was surprised that the only option was chicken. The typical Shanghainese version is typically stir-fried with shredded pork. For apps or snacks, their egg rolls were good. For dessert I highly recommend getting the fried pumpkin pancakes and sesame balls.

3 Cold dishes - veggie (seaweed, potato, mushroom cucumber mix)

There are two locations of northern cafe in irvine close to each other but this one is way better. Last time I went to the other location, all the food was incredibly salty. This location we got: xiao long bao, popcorn chicken, 3 cold dish (veggie - potato, seaweed, and mushroom/cucumber mix), beef skewers, and spicy wonton. The XLB were yummy with a chewy skin. Popcorn chicken could have been a bit more seasoned - I'd pass next time. 3 cold dish was plentiful and delicious. Beef skewers were great! ("super tender and spiced perfectly" according to my partner), spicy wonton was a tad too salty but still yummy. Their menu is plentiful with a lot of yummy looking items. inside is clean but the tables are a bit close to each other. Service is efficient and fast, I also love that you can order via QR code (but sadly cannot pay through it)

This place is always spot on, went recently with a friend and she was impressed at the flavors and portions. We ordered the beef wrap, popcorn chicken and spicy pork wontons and we finished everything. A true testament of how good it was.

    Are there gluten free options?

If you order stuff like skewers or the appetizers from the "steam table". There is no noodle or dumplings that's gluten free. Also, soy sauce is used so if you're very gluten sensitive then I would say no.

Not that I can say I'm all that surprised in hindsight, but it's still kind of a shame. Mostly because I just wish the food had been better, but also because, despite how impressive the OC food scene is, I hadn't come across any BBQ joints/Cantonese restaurants that SF has so many of until randomly stumbling across this place! Then again, maybe I've just been too distracted by the many Taiwanese options that the Bay Area is so criminally short on... Compared to some of the Chinese BBQ joints that I frequent in the Bay Area, this place felt so much newer and a whole lot cleaner/nicer. That said, while the menu appeared to be a whole lot narrower, they still had a decent selection of offerings to choose from. Along with their nearly twenty different sides/snack dishes, which include items like pig ears with chili sauce, cucumber salad, chicken wings, wontons in chili oil, and tofu skin salad, they also had BBQ meats, like Roasted Duck, Soy Sauce Chicken, and Char Siu, a mix of rice and noodle dishes, and combination plates of their BBQ meats over rice or noodles. Sadly, though, no crispy skin roast pork, which was a huge bummer. -- SWEET FRIED CORN Admittedly, this initially didn't catch my eye, but I'm glad we ended up trying it. Every piece was crispy and I liked how sweet and flavorful the corn was. Plus, it was how this wasn't all that oily, though, I wouldn't have minded a bit more batter for some added crunch. -- WONTONS IN CHILI OIL Not too shabby. Although the skins felt a little overcooked, each piece was fairly plump and I thought the filling was pretty tasty. It was also unexpected to see a bit of broth with the chili oil, but it had a nice flavor to it and just the right amount of spice. -- TWO BBQ ITEM RICE PLATE with Char Siu and Roasted Duck I was the most excited for this, but it left me feeling conflicted. On the plus side, the bowl had a fair amount of both meats and the duck was really good - really juicy and the skin was golden brown. On the other hand, the char siu was super fatty and the rice was mushy. -- DICED GROUND PORK ON RICE...$13.99 More solid than spectacular, but still satisfying enough. Like with the BBQ plate, the meat to rice ratio favored the former and I thought the egg and the veggies complemented this well. At the same time, I wish this had more sauce to it, as the pork look a little dry/pale. In addition to how convenient it was to come here (there was a steady crowd, but it never got packed inside), I appreciated how fast our food came out. Also, I'm not sure if we just got lucky, but it wasn't nearly as hard to find a space in the complex's parking lot as it seemed it would be. Between all of that, the food being decent, and the relatively friendly service, Frank's BBQ & Noodles wasn't bad for some Chinese BBQ. However, it definitely could've been better, especially if Roast Pork had been one of their offerings!

The food still tastes pretty much the same, although some portions did get a little bigger. I still wish it were more like the Rowland Heights location where the skewers are grilled right in front of you -- that experience just makes the food feel fresher and more enjoyable. The service was okay overall, but some staff members definitely had attitudes, which made the experience a bit annoying. They're only open at night now, which honestly makes sense since this type of food is more of a late-night craving spot. I also came back to try their crawfish for the first time, but personally I feel like 949 Grill does it better. The crawfish tasted fresher there, and I think their skewers are better quality now too. Business also seemed much slower than before. I think being closed for 6 months really hurt them because a lot of people probably forgot about the place.

The dining area was noticeably cold, and the temperature didn't appear adjusted for the low occupancy. This became more obvious as the food arrived, since everything cooled down quickly. Even with metal warming trays, the dishes struggled to retain heat, and once barbecue items turn lukewarm, both texture and flavour decline noticeably. Across the meats, there was a surprising lack of differentiation in marination. The lamb skewers, beef tongue, and other grilled items all seemed to share the same base seasoning, with only the sauces changing to distinguish them. The lamb skewers themselves were very lean, cut into uniform blocks that looked tidy but lacked richness and the expected fatty depth that gives lamb its aroma and juiciness. The beef tongue was slightly more enjoyable, but still arrived lukewarm, which dulled its texture and impact. The signature chicken wings were slightly dry, with a sauce that didn't add much dimension. The grilled scallop dish was the most disappointing--mostly vermicelli with only a minimal amount of scallop, leaving it dry and lacking substance. That said, the highlight of the night was unexpectedly the fried chicken skin chicharrón. Crisp, airy, and indulgently fatty, it delivered exactly what the rest of the meal was missing--heat, texture, and unapologetic flavour. I didn't explore much beyond the barbecue items and a few appetizers, as the consistency already raised questions about the rest of the menu. The meal ended up being mostly cold beer paired with lukewarm meats and limited service attention. Even getting staff attention for drinks required effort. Overall, the experience felt flat and underpowered--especially because the core dishes never held temperature or distinction long enough to build impact, with the exception of a single standout in the fried chicken skin.

All the tables were full and there was one party of 11 just ahead of us. Our wait for a table was like 30 minutes or so. Once we were up we were guided to a table towards the back for five. Our server asked if we been here before and if we wanted anything else besides water to drink. My brother and his fiance split a full order of the beef ribs and side order of sauteed garlic green beans. My mom and step dad split a full order of beef ribs while I ordered a full rack of baby back ribs which came with two side orders. I picked coleslaw and onion rings which I shared with the family. The food came out promptly. Everyone enjoyed their food. The baby back ribs were moist with flavor, smoked and went well with their bbq sauce. The rest of the family really like their beef ribs. And they even commented that it was better than the other bbq places we been to. Definitely will return and highly recommend.

*** SCAM ALERT *** I…read moredon't use the word "SCAM" lightly, but that's what this was. My adult son called in a $281.62 order off the menu for Mother's Day. They would not accept the order or payment over the phone because the order was "too big." They asked that someone go there and pay up front for the entire order. Since it was the evening before Mother's Day, I drove to them and paid for the order. Yes, I was also presented with a minumum 20% TIP screen, which I declined. When I got there at pickup time (4:00pm) on Mother's Day, the price changed to $325.51. I was told that, for some reason, they had cut about 50% larger portions than the menu specified (see the line items, which should have been 1 lb. each), so they charged me for the difference ($325.51 - $281.62) which was $43.89 (about 50% more for the 2 items they cut heavier). No, there was no mention when I placed the order that the total cost might change due to extra meat. Neither is it shown on their web site or printed menus. When I protested, there was no option. If I don't pay the $43.89 difference, I don't get the Mother's Day food. After about 20 minutes of bickering at the counter with two different clerks (note the time stamp differences on the credit card slips), I was given my original order, with a net price reduction of ($281.62 - $254.93) $26.69. My persistence had paid off. On a positive note, the cook did, twice, walk up to me and quietly apologize for what was going on. I know many folks would have folded in this situation, but that's not my nature. I don't stand for dishonesty. Yes, it was embarrassing, other clients in line were not happy (I let them skip ahead of me so as not to inconvenience them). None of them had price increases. I don't know if the clerks wanted a tip because the management doesn't pay them much, or it this goes deeper and is standard operating procedure that assumes most clients will simply approve of the overage and pay up. In any case, from this client's point of view, this is a SCAM! When it was all over, I took my 11 and 12 year old grandsons (who had been sitting patiently waiting for grandpa to pay) and my food package to the car, drove home and proudly presented the meat to my family. After all, I am a hunter-gatherer; and the food was great!
