I blew the reverse gear on my '75 Scout and drove it like that (always needing to park where I had a roll back getaway plan) for longer than I'd like to admit because every other shop quoted me such a high price to fix it. That is until I was recommend to Nor Cal. They gave me a best case (just replace reverse ) and worst case (would need a full rebuild based on how the rest looked) quote before tearing into it to. The rest of it turned out to be shot, I came in and saw the components before they trashed them and I'm shocked it went forward at all with those. BUT they still ended up charging me less for a full rebuild than other shops wanted to just to replace reverse. That was 2 years ago with a lot of me beating on it in between and it still runs like a top with nice clean shifts. I also went in this week due to a clunking noise I couldn't put my finger on with another vehicle and it took 2 minutes of a test drive for Don to let me know he was 99% sure it was my transfer case. He didn't even hesitate to crawl under as well to get the best look he could without tearing it apart. That one happened to be covered under factory warranty or I would have used them again because they again quoted me a very fair price if they did need to rebuild it for me. Not many shops like this any more. They really are honest and just trying to help people out vs. gouge them. Russel even offered me a ride home when I dropped my Scout off and the ride I thought I was going to get from my GF wasn't working out. I brought my 1965 Mercury Comet Caliente to Don's shop to get my transmission rebuilt. Don ran into some issues trying to find parts for my old Transmission. That being said, Don got the parts needed and did a fantastic job. 2nd gear would always pop out down shifting prior to the rebuild and now its better then new. There are a lot of shops out there to chose from... I would make this shop my first choice, if you have transmission issues. Fair, honest, reliable and most of all, he cares about the quality of work coming out of his shop. They kept car for a month and didnt even bother to tighten bolts that hold engine, 2 fell out onto road while driving. Guys at Jiffy Lube on Hartnell helped screw the one back in. I never did find the other, they said its a miracle I didnt drop engine on freeway, it was hanging by a thread! I dont feel I still owe $100 after this kind of negligence! I owe a HUGE THANK YOU to Don and his team at Nor Cal Transmission in Santa Rosa. Despite the fact that I didn't have an appountment and some of Don's employees couldn't even get to work yesterday (due to the fires) he managed to prioritize a repair for my van because he knew I'd been donating it for helping with fire relief efforts around the North Bay. He got me out in a few hours and only charged me for the parts, no labor. He said he just wanted to help get me back on the road ASAP so I could try to use the van to try and do some more good for fire victims and relief efforts. Don is a great guy to deal with. Had to deal with a warranty issue on a transmission (bought by previous owner). Don has been extremely helpful in getting this resolved. I am very pleased with the quality of their work. The guys even replaced a rear main seal I forgot to mention that had a minor leak while they had the transmission out. He also noticed a loose driveshaft bolt and replaced it. (not even anything related, but could have been a big problem). I typically do all work on my vehicles myself. I haven't taken a vehicle to a mechanic in 14 years. As a very picky mechanical engineer and machinist all I can say is GREAT JOB!!! read more

I've dealt with the good folks at Nor Cal only twice. Ten years ago I severly damaged the automatic transmission in a 1992 Chevy Blazer while trying to rock it out of some snow by throwing it between reverse and 1st with my foot on the throttle. They rebuilt it with heavier duty parts in a process that involves lifting the body off the frame to get the tranny out for not much more than some places charge to replace the clutch in a front wheel drive sedan. I couldn't believe how reasonable the price was. The quality of the work was absolutely first rate, it has been just under ten years since that repair and the transmission is still working as smoothly as the day it came back from the the shop. The second occaison was when I went to them to have a bushing from a small manual transmission inspected and honed. They did the work while I waited and refused to charge me for it, saying it took so little time it didn't matter. One of the best automotive service shops I've ever dealt with. read more
