Me and my fiance have been going here for over 5 years. It has not been consistent but it is normally the best sushi in the area. For a long time I held Nori as the standard in north Jersey. Lately they have slipped a bit. I think the original manger left for some time and standards began to slip. But thankfully after my last visit I saw her back floating around and greeting customers. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in the mood for fresh sushi. Also get the wasabi shrimp. Its AMAZING. Some other good spots but not as good. Aki and mamoya. read more

Hands down our favorite neighborhood Japanese spot! Nori is a family owned restaurant, it has awesome food, with great prices, and their fish is always fresh. They have amazing rolls: Montclair, Caribbean, Godzilla, Verona, Wasabi, Jalapeno, and Mexican to name a few. Their sushi and sashimi is always of high quality that is reasonably priced. The menu has quiet an extensive offering of chef specialty rolls, special appetizers like our favorite; Yellow Tail Jalapeno and Spicy Tuna Naga-Ochi Along with many of other great Japanese and Pan Asian dishes Their staff and service has always been Warm friendly and helpful. They also have a BYOB policy and every time we stopped by late in the evening to pick up a takeout order, they managed to put the order together just as we wanted it. Great spot in an otherwise overpriced Montclair section of Bloomfield ave. Wait staff is extremely friendly. Cater to my food allergies (gluten, dairy, fruit) pretty well. Sushi portions are good size, sushi seems fresh and they churn out the rolls pretty quickly. Only once was there an issue with a bone in my fish but that was quickly remedied and the roll was taken off the bill. Have been countless times and look forward to it every Sunday. I usually order 8-10 different rolls so I've tried a great deal on their menu, including the different specials. Their spicy mayo is spot on as well. The girlfriend, who usually accompanies me, gets the Tom Yum Kung Soup (Thai Hot and Sour Soup) filled with all types of seafood and loves it every time. read more

One of my favorite places for sushi, always fresh and delicious. The setting is intimate and comfortable for dinner with a friend or a date. My only complaint is that the wait staff are slightly out of whack sometimes - I'll place an order and then another waitress will come up and ask to take our order again, or there have been times where I've felt kind of rushed to finish eating and order dessert when I'd like to just sit and talk a little after my meal, so it seems there's a little miscommunication there. I was pretty disappointed with my rolls here. I ordered two rolls and they mixed them up by putting the toppings of my specialty roll on top of my regular spicy tuna roll. My spicy tuna roll was just okay. The specialty roll was horrible. FIrst, it was TINY... probably smaller than a quarter. One of the better sushi restaurants that I've personally been to. They serve great rolls and are generally quick in preparing it, though occasionally during busy times it is understandably slower, but well worth waiting for. Mistakes are few and in the 5-10 times I've been here I have only experienced one small inconvenience. The decor is highly appealing, setting a nice atmosphere for diners. This is the second time I am writing a review for this place, and the fact that I am writing a second review for this horrible experience is saying a lot. I went last night with a friend, and I cannot even begin to tell you what a horrible experience it was. We came in around 7ish, it was busy but nothing too crazy, there were still tables open (at least 5 tables were open minimum) . We were seated, we waited and waited for a good 20 minutes. We had a bottle of wine, all the sudden our waitress (she had black hair up in a pony tail and was wearing glasses: aka the most rudest server ever!!), or at least we assumed she was our server because she did not introduce herself, she just dropped two wine glasses at our table. She did not say hello, she did not even introduce herself. Nothing. It was so bizarre. Oh and forget the fact that we got no water either! So after about 15 minutes, I said excuse me to her, because again we must have been bothering her asking her to order some appetizers, and we were hungry we were waiting a long time, never mentioned anything about waiting a long time or that we were hungry just said excuse me can we order some apps real quick because this girl made me afraid to do anything because I would have gotten a nasty look and worse service (if that was even possible!)! My friend saw her behind me roll her eyes and make a face. Mind you I was as sweet as can be, and I even was annoyed since we already were seated for over 30 minutes with not even a hello, glass of water or anything. My friend asked for a glass of ice for the wine, and she rolled her eyes again, you would think she would have brought us water, WRONG! We then order an appetizer (edamame and 2 miso soups), of course she got the miso order wrong, when we clearly said 2 soups three times she kept repeating one. So another 20 minutes goes by, we got our edamame, which took a while for some heated up vegetables, and we still did not have our miso soup. Finally we get our miso soups, which why it took 30+ minutes to get a miso soup which is pre made is beyond me! Of course when she dropped them off she was rude, almost annoyed, did not say a word. This waitress was not slaving running from table to table she literally was standing there doing nothing, so get us 2 glasses of water, clear off our table, and ask us how everything is! Finally we grab her attention again, (so sorry we bothered her!) and we ask for more ice in a glass for the wine, I kid you not she did not even have the energy to bring us back a cup of ice, or better yet two glasses of water, she brought back a spoon and stood there with it in her hand, it was so odd and awkward. Not once did anyone come to see how our food was, nothing, or even clear off a plate, other people eventually cleared our table every now and then if we were lucky. Finally our sushi comes, delivered by someone else, as well as the edamame which was delivered by the same guy, sushi was good, experience was horrible. Experience was so bad it was laughable, which is all you can really do in these situations.. Not once did she come and ask us how everyone was. Ok anyway here is the kicker, were are basically done with our sushi and all the sudden our waitress is yelling with the hostess and about 1 or 2 other servers in another language, and loud. clearly it was about something that was going on, we thought it was about us! We pay our bill, swallowing our pride and tipping her, which honestly we did not even want to tip, but again we felt bad. We go to use the bathroom and there is our waitress, I cant make this up, yelling at about a party of 10 telling them that she is busy, she literally ignored them and paid no attention to them and they were upset, rightfully so!! But you should NEVERRRR yell at a customer the way this girl was yelling. She even said oh now your going to write a review. They should with the way they were all treated. We told the group of girls to not feel so bad because she was our server too and she was horrible. Upon us leaving we went to the hostess and asked to speak to a manager, because we were afraid our food was going to get spit in, because we got eye rolls and bad service, and the hostess this tiny little girl all the sudden was like nasty, telling us there is no manager, no one we could talk to. So you have no manager or owner for anyone to speak to? HORRIBLE!! If you don't want to be there, go home and don't make peoples experience miserable or better yet a job, because you do not want to do your job. The sad part too is that anyone who did NOT have this waitress who even came an hour after us was done with their dinner way before us, and I am talking a handful of people. I for one am totally an understandable person, my husband has served and works in the restaurant industry for years so I completely am understanding, but OH MY GOD, this was unacceptable!! read more

The customer service at this place is horrible. Beyond. 2 friends and I came for sushi Saturday afternoon, banking on good food and a good time. What we received was mediocre rolls and distasteful service. So, my two friends got there first and told me that they weren't even acknowledged for about 15 mins before they had to wave someone down to take their order. We started off with the harumaki, seaweed salad, kani salad, and miso soup. Perfect, even though the soup was kind of cold, no complaints there. We waited about another 20 mins before someone even came over to clear the table. And when he did come, he took away one plate and never came back for the rest! So another 10 mins past before he came back to take our sushi order (someone else realized that our table looked like pure garbage and finally removed the used dishes). One of my friends noticed the "Specials Menu" and decided to try the "Coconut Shrimp Lobster" roll. We also ordered the "Donkey Kong", "Ichiban", "Digimon", "Verona", "M16", "Avocado & Eel" and "Dragon Salmon" rolls. Obviously, we came to eat. While we were waiting, a guy at the table in back of us was yelling and complaining because they were waiting a long time for their food. He demanded they take of 20% of his bill, which they did (please remember this part). By the way, the decor is very beautiful, especially for such a small sushi spot. Moving forward... So we finally received our sushi and was completely disgusted with the presentation. Seriously, it was so sloppy and ugly (I worked in a Sushi/Hibachi restaurant prior so I'm pretty well versed in the Japanese cuisine). Sushi is usually so beautifully presented, I was extremely disappointed. Nevertheless, we began eating. The special that my friend ordered came out with this hideous green sauce that tasted a million times worse than what it looked like. We read the special again and realized that it did not state that it would be topped with a sauce. We were completely turned off. How did they know if one of us weren't allergic to an ingredient or something ? Never mind the DISGUSTING taste. After such a traumatizing experience, I was hesitant to taste the next roll. But surprisingly, everything else was okay. Everything else except for the "Ichiban". Idk who came up with that combination, but please do not pursue a culinary career...ever. Because we were so displeased with those two rolls, we politely asked if they could please take those two rolls off the bill, but we would pay for everything else because it was good. After consulting 3 other staff, they refused to adjust our bill. We were told management was no where to be found and no one could help us. So, I reminded them of the table earlier who rudely demanded a discount that was given to them. The waitress proceeded to tell me that that was a different scenario. No. The only difference was the age and ethnicity of the other customer. They continued to deny our request. All of us have experience in restaurant customer service and were completely baffled at the blatant discrimination and horrible customer service. All in all, this place will never receive our business again or anyone we know. ------------------------------------------------ IN RESPONSE TO THE OWNER'S COMMENT: Wow! It's so awesome that I got finally a response from management a month after the incident..seeing as "there was no management available" at the time of the incident lol. I'd like to take the time to thank you for addressing this. But your points are invalid. 1. I definitely complemented positively on the decor and the food we did enjoy. 2. Seeing as you reviewed cameras with no audio and are going strictly by the account of your extremely rude staff, AND no management was at your establishment at the time (very odd to be running a business like that) I gather that you have absolutely no veracity of what occurred. 3. Please don't insult us by saying we paid only half the bill. That is a lie. We simply deducted the item your staff refused to take off. 4. I personally worked in a Sushi restaurant. Your chefs gave us sloppy presentation. 5. They did take off 20% of the other customer's bill. We were sitting right behind him and heard the entire thing. I'm pretty sure you're aware of how small the restaurant is... 6. I never wrote a bad review on a restaurant because I've never had such a horrible experience. 7. Two stars means completely mediocre and unmemorable but also not inedible. Tried four different rolls and could hardly taste the fish. Even the rolls with jalapeno slices had no flavor. Hands down the best sushi I have sver had... both locations. I have tried at least 15 other places but no one can compare to Nori! Sushi pizza and Snow mountain are the best on the menu, but i also love the mango shrimp and spicy caldwell. It can get a little pricey if yoh want a variety but it's so worth it because every bite is delicious. The acoustics in this place are pretty bad, however, but it's totally worth sucking up the noise through a wonderful meal. read more

Decided to try this place because of the great reviews. We arrived around 5pm and it was pretty empty with only one other group there. The guy at the front told us to choose any seat so we did close to the front. Five mins went by and still no service. A lady approaches the front to acknowledge the waitress to let her know she had a group of 4 to be seated so they tended to them. I was beyond annoyed that the place was so empty & no one had came over to give us menus or even service us. I looked at my husband & said let's go! Great sushi spot! Came here a few times and loved my meal every time! A great variety of sushi rolls, sashimi and other hot (non sushi) items. Nice atmosphere, friendly service, and delicious food. WORST PLACE EVER... A few girlfriends and I went there to eat and I really wish we went elsewhere. Customer service and the quality of their food has gradually gone down. The servers/ waitresses including front desk service are very obnoxious. After we were seated for over 10 minutes, they literally ignored us to the point that we had to keep saying excuse me to get someone's attention in order to get menus. We had to ask for beverages, and the green tea was served cold. To top this off, after ordering, we waited for over 40 minutes till we got our food, about 15 minutes into eating one of the girls working there( and I only address her as that because we didn't have a waitress) comes and drops the bill on the table and insisted that we pay now. We got there at 8:50 and wasn't served till almost 9:45 ish. She proceed to remind us that they closed at 10:30. We politely addressed her and told her that we wanted to quickly order dessert. She bought 1 menu to the table for three people. We asked her for another menu she bought just one more and so we had to ask her for a third menu. After waiting again, the desserts came with dirty utensils. So unprofessional, they gathered in a group and just kept talking loud and looking back at our table. At the end of it all, no one is ever perfect, and at time we need to just let it go because we are all humans. However, I am also a firm believer, of doing your job well. And they did no such and so I am posting to fore warn another sushi lover who may just want to be simplistically happy... read more

We had an unfortunate experience with the ethics of this restaurant. We walked in at 630 (party of two) and were shown a two-top. As the restaurant was virtually empty, we asked for a larger table. We were told that all the tables had reservations. I told them that we were going to eat quick and will likely be done by the time they would need the larger tables. Let me point out that virtually EVERY SINGLE TABLE was open.... The reality is that they just didn't want to accommodate us and it bothered us. When we left about 45 min later, most of the larger tables still remained opened. I remarked (a bit of sarcasm) to the waitress and front desk....what happened to all the reservations??? They ignored me. Ohhh, how was the sushi? It was good, but the lack of focus for customer appreciation was enough to turn us off. Came here with one of my friends for dinner on friday night. Good food and staff was nice. HOWEVER, after we paid, they were on a small wait. we were still talking. The hostess or maybe manager or something asked us to leave. She was polite and pointed the wait but thats not something you do.... Montclair Nori restaurant has a wonderful ambiance; the decor is a feast for the eye. The two entrees we ordered were so beautifully prepared that we did not wish to disturb them. Finally we did and they were delicious. Each mouthful was to be savored and we enjoyed it slowly. The host and waitresses were extremely friendly and caring. Pretty good sushi, but not the best in town. They really don't do anything special but nothing is bad either. Personally, I prefer Dai Kichi or Nouveau Sushi. Both are better but more expensive. Nori isn't a bad choice though especially if cost is a consideration. read more
