I have really enjoyed each of my visits to this fun venue! The garlic fries are amazing! Super fun place to meet for drinks!

My first review!! After attending the Bite of Oregon 2009, and trying the beer steamed mussels from NW 45th, I had to go and experience the other types of mussels. Not only that, but I was meeting a consultant of mine for the first time in my business, and I told her and her husband, that if they liked mussels, this was the place to go! At the Bite, it was $5 for a heftly serving of mussels. On the restaurant website, it was $15 for a meal of mussels. I thought it portions must be much bigger. Upon arrival, my husband and friend ordered a beer (two different ones) which they were both out of. After everyone ordered drinks, she took our order for food. I was looking at the website all day, knowing that I was going to order the Coconut Lemongrass Mussels. Guess what? They were out! So I got another kind, which was so-so. When the mussels came, they were not too much bigger in portion size than was at the Bite. I was a bit disappointed, and a little embarrassed for my consultant for talking up these mussels so much. It was pricey, for not much food, and were out of a lot of stuff. On the other side, there was live music playing which was great, the service was good, and the environment was comfortable. Not sure if I would eat there again, if I would, I would get something other than mussels. read more

North 45 is one of my favorite bars in portland. It has an amazing relaxed vibe, great food and even better drinks. You have to try the Moscow mule it comes an awesome copper cup. Service is also excellent they make you feel at home. We will always be regulars here. read more

Came in here yesterday night with a larger group (about 15) and sat on the patio. The waitress did an amazing job. She had the entire patio and did her best to get to every table an equal amount (even when some people were being rude). The only reason why I'm giving this place three stars was because of the food and drinks. I had a basic gin and tonic, while my partner had a basic vodka soda. We honestly both tried them and couldn't tell the difference between them. I ordered the Mac n cheese with the fried chicken breast on it and it was the most bland Mac n cheese. This place seemed so low-key, yet packed the night I went. With a mellow ambiance and nice, steppin' music, I felt very comfortable. I really enjoy the back patio area. I came for a Yelp event and accidentally got addicted to the mussels. Awesome! The other food is good too, like the macaroni. But the mussels are amazing. I had really goid drinks there and the staff was really nice. The back area is a bit blended in it seems, but makes it feel a little more exclusive back there. It seemed like a good place for a dj and some dancing, some kind of classy, chill event. One of my new favorites up there in the NW neighborhood now. I appreciate the recommendation. read more

Went for happy hour and the patio, the place is always comfortable and welcoming. We were greeted and served by Sebastian who has a great sense of humor and honestly seems to want everyone to enjoy themselves. We had garlic fries and chicken wings, the wings are great, the fries were crispy but unremarkable. Good beer selection and reasonable prices for wine. Its a kick back place. read more

We came to a Portland Thorns match party: We started inside but they weren't able to find sound on the stream for over the first 20 minutes of the match. There was sound outside, we asked our server if we could tab out and move outside and she said we could keep our tab open and she would still be our server. She served the table next to us three times and didn't check on us even though we didn't have drinks (we came outside with almost empty drinks). They ordered food and had it served and still nothing despite making eye contact. We ended up ordering from another server (who felt badly we weren't served and was very attentive after it was brought to her attention)....the server from inside never saw us again, made eye contact but didn't stop. 2 stars because at least they have good beer, but sorely disappointed in the service and lack of prep for hosting a watch party of one of the most beloved Portland teams. read more

There are so many great places in NW Portland to hang out at, and this place isn't one of them. Poor service, horrible management, pompous attitude, and generally a bad place to go. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy, much less a friend. I've had better experiences at truck stops. The only shinning feature was the food, but judging by the management, I'm sure they'll mess that up somehow too. If I could give them negative stars, I would. read more

I'll start with the good: the patio in the back is nice for a city place. The drinks were good and overpriced for Portland proper but not for the neighborhood. The bad? Miserable people abound. Had the same feeling here that I did when I journeyed to Big Pink and landed at Portland City Grill: self-important meh-holes who make too much money for what they do and spend too much time doing it to enjoy any of the money so they piss it away at a watering hole with all the right 'clothes' so to speak. Eye rolling, whining, and fear abound. Come on, people. Is this really why you went to college? Did you really grow up aspiring to be the jerk whose only sense of meaning comes from making not-so-subtle sideways remarks to the folks you dragged with you to the bar in the hopes that you will feel better so long as they feel worse? You're better than that. At least, you can be. read more

North 45 is great place to kick back, enjoy a tasty cocktail and revel in their yummy selection of happy hour menu items - the chorizo mussels will leave your mouth watering! They have a great selection of German beers and an eclectic cocktail list. My new favorite hangout! read more

A great place to get good Scotch. I heard about this place when they had their specials for the Super Bowl - cheap chili dogs and nachos! It stuck out as a great place to drop by for happy hour or to meet up with friends before a night out. read more

This is travel inspired Pub takes me back, and I don't mean just the pictures on the walls of friends and employees trips, the maps, and the displays of flags and foreign currency. When I first walked in North 45, first thing I loved it's the marble tables and counter tops and the wood finishes, having grown up in Europe you just don't see this often enough on the west coast. But wasn't only the charm and the quality finishes of the space that won me, that's the set up, the best was yet to come. The quality of food, brews and one of the most complete bourbon, Irish whiskey and Scotch I've seen in a few continents. What also struck me is that regardless how crowded is the bar the food quality doesn't take a critical dive to bad, most places I found out that to have a good meal you've got to go on a day that is dead. That won't happen at North 45. If that wasn't enough the staff makes you feel at home and has always awarded me with great service. Of course it gets busy... of course, and for those who don't like waiting just letting them know that a good poured pint of Guinness takes a few minutes and it's frigging' worth it! It's a great atmosphere during the weekends and a great spot for a drink and happy hour daily. read more

So this my favorite stop in the neighborhood. First came here to check out the mussels - which were great - but keep coming back for the service and the whiskey wall. Not only a huge selection of spirits but one of the most, most diverse selection I've run into yet in Portland. A super friendly (and funny) staff as well as a huge patio that is apparently heated in the winter. And the music is pretty good too! read more

oh. my. garlic. Mid-way through a NW pub crawl, it was a slice of heaven walking into a smoke free bar! But this was clearly a sentiment shared by many, as the entire population of Nob Hill seemed to be squeezed around the short L-shaped bar. But guess what? No one in the growing crowd of attractive young professionals had a cigarette in hand! Cheers. SO - dear yelpers, I have a theory to present. And knowing me, you can expect this theory to be the epitome of factual scientific research... Garlic - as crowd control. Think about it. It doesn't take a Maslow-virtuoso to know that people need oxygen to live. Without the smoke that assures a high level of customer rotation, North 45 had to effectively create a reason for customers to buy their drinks and LEAVE. Cue Garlic. By the clove. It overpowered the bruschetta and quesadilla appetizers, I have a sneaking suspicion it was slipped in the drinks...and my wool coat swears they pump the stuff through the air vents! I sneezed and now my entire condo has been overrun. At least I'm safe from vampires for the time being. In conclusion: North 45, unlike every other bar on 21st street, is non-smoking. Therefore, they've implemented their own revolving door technique to avoid bar-camping. It's their polite way of saying, thanks for coming, now get the F*** out. I love this bar...and I will sacrifice my post-party "plans" any day for another piece of that bruschetta! read more

Last night reminded me why I love this place as much as I do; it is everything that a neighborhood bar should be! Consistently great tap choices and favorite standbys. The food is delicious. Every time I go in there I feel like I am hanging out with friends. The staff is so friendly. There is one particular waitress that always has a smile on her face, her happiness is contagious. This place is a gem. Atmosphere is fun, eclectic and friendly - no snotty servers, or bartenders here - so check your attitude at the door. Looks like I'm bucking a trend here, but I'm just not impressed. I've had horrible (bartender having sooo much fun chatting with her buds at the other end of the bar that she couldn't be bothered to acknowledge - let alone serve - a thirsty me at the other end) service here. Yesterday the service was a little better but the lunch was not. Pathetic fish & chips. Fish was so heavily breaded that it resembled a turnover. I could get better out of the frozen food section. Limp fries. Cole slaw was terrible - ate 2 bites and wished I hadn't. Also ordered a spinach salad that wasn't bad. Pulled them all the way up to 1.5 stars and I'm generous in rounding up. read more

Very cute and cozy little pub in uptown. So sad they don't carry their jambalaya anymore, which was the best I've had at a restaurant. I mainly come here for the food, because it's delicious, especially any of their seafood items, but they have really good drinks too. The muscles are served with a variety of broth flavors you can choose from. Great place to hang out! read more

The bar has a huge back patio with an outside bar. It's great to just sit at a picnic table and enjoy a drink with friends.

"Wow, this place is pretty crowded." "Yeah. Well, it's $9 beer night." Great bar and awesome patio. Can't say much about the food here since we just hopped in to grab a drink and check this place out. What I can say is that, yes, you are going to be paying a lot for a drink. Their beer menus consists of almost all imported Belgian beers which have an average price of $9. Skip the draft beers as they are not good, granted you'll be saving $4 but only by drinking a lousy $5 pilsner. Now that I know what to expect I'll be sure to go again as my expectations of the place have changed. I have to give this place props for an awesome outdoor patio and great Belgian beer selection. But I have to give it anti props for having mediocre food and service. And the final anti prop comes in the form of that mediocre food being overpriced. Damn. Between the two of us we had a few Belgian beers, two different types of mussels, and a pickle plate. The pickled vegetables were fine, but nothing special. It came served with a tiny portion of chevre and what tasted like day old fred meyer white bread. We were starving so we finished it anyway, and then got our mussels - Embarcadero and Argentine. Both were fairly mild in flavor. I feel like if your "shtick" is going to be mussels (I assume when you have mussels and Belgian beers that's a thing you're going for/trying to do well) you should probably do it better than they did. Both broths needing some punching up and let's be honest, the bread could be an easy upgrade. Our server checked on us a couple of times, but wasn't very attentive. We asked for water and were pointed to a water station (it was a slow night, I get it, but she could have offered to bring us some water) - and maybe when you server beer you could pour it in the glass? IDK. Just a thought. 4 drinks, 2 mussels and a pickle plate and was still over $90 with tip. Overpriced, under satisfied. The same patio is next door at 21st Avenue Bar and Grill for more affordable drinks, and plenty of good places in the hood to get good food. read more

I've been to this bar several times before. The beer selection is good, the outdoor patio is great. I wanted to try some bourbon. I went to the bar and saw various bourbon on the middle shelf that I was familiar with, ie. Knob Creek, Pendleton, etc. I pointed to a bottle right next to Knob Creek. The bartender poured the shot and I drank it. I asked for the check. It was $75!!!! I asked him if this was a mistake. He said it was not. I was embarrassed. I paid and left. I came back to speak with him about an hour later. I told him he should have told me how much it was before I drank it. He said his "clients" are offended if he brings up the price. This is bull. No one in that bar is ordering $75 shots. I will never go back. read more

I live in the neighborhood so I frequent this place sometimes. On my birthday, I decided that I REALLY wanted calamari so I gave this place a try and it was one of the BEST calamari dishes I've had in Portland. Perfectly cooked and wonderful coating! The sauce was tangy and the rings were quite reminiscent of calamari that I've had in Italy. Sometimes the bartenders can be a bit stand offish and not really servy. The patio is lovely. read more

I came here on a Monday night (all night happy hour on Mondays) when it was nice and warm... They were totally unprepared for the onslaught of customers, and so we waited and waited for our food. When it came out it was tepid. I think on a regular night this place would be a decent deal but still not sure I'd go out of my way to come back, with so many other options around. read more

A NW favorite for some Portlanders, and a NW afterthought for others. What happens here is totally bizarre. They have an awesome bar, awesome menu, but not so awesome hours for their back patio and not so awesome service. Such a shame! You can sit outside and watch people pour out of this place around 10PM. You'll ask yourself "whuhhh? what's going on? where are these people coming from? Well unfortunately there is a noise ordinance that prohibits them from having their patio open after 10PM, so they must shut it down. So if you are going to sit on the patio, make sure you give yourself plenty of time. Don't sit on the front sidewalk either, unless you want to sit and wait until your beer is empty, then wait another 5 minutes for the waitress to notice, then another 10 minutes for your other beer to arrive. Is it really that busy, you ask? Nope, it isn't! People are generally simple creatures. They want to people watch, get some drinks, possibly eat some decent food, and they want to do it quickly. This place has the ability to put these components together, but isn't making it happen currently! Get it together, North 45! You have the potential to rule NW 21st, and the surrounding area, all you have to do is apply your staff and get your service together. read more

The drink is pretty good and the service is very friendly. They also have internet access. The kitchen opens late so you can order calamari or fish and chips whenever you like. The place is a bit loud filled with suburban crowds. That can be a bit annoying. The environment is also very nice and casually romantic. It is also the only bar in town that serves mussel dishes like bar snacks. They can be a bit pricey. read more

Very disappointing. Service was slow, tables were dirty, and food was less than mediocre. The waitress informed us it was the cook's first day, and it showed. We got mahi mahi tacos - the fish was bland and unseasoned (not to mention an incredibly small amount), the "beet salsa" was basically chopped beets, and the tortillas were way too big and tasted like they came out of a bag. Some of the worst service in the NW. My first experience was with family on the back patio. There was 10 of us, the place was empty, and it took the wait staff 15 minutes to even ask us if we would like a drink...we came to drink. After we asked for service, inside, little changed in the staff attitude and we packed up to go to a better bar. My second experience on the patio: order beer, wrong beer arrives, beer is taken away, 10 minutes pass before another wrong beer arrives. Order second beer, 15 minutes pass without a beer, walk over to waitress and ask for the beer, waitress says the beer was sent to the table, I say it did not, she says I am wrong. Wow. Second beer finally arrives...wrong beer! I ordered a burger medium/rare. It was extremely rare, mushy and gross. I told the waitress the burger was not good, but did not want another one. When the bill arrived, we were charged for both beers and the burger I did not eat. Wow. I live in this neighborhood and strongly recommend searching for a different spot to eat and drink. Too bad, because the outside patio and inside bar are cool. I wish I could write a solid review. read more

Good, interesting food and fine drinks. Usually crowded and kind of noisy. This seems to be largely a pickup spot for affluent young professionals, who range from cool and smart to rowdy, loud and dumb. The food is not cheap but it's pretty good. Good music, at the pop end of indie rock. read more

I really love the entire back patio of this place - the bar is great during the winter. The food is fair, other than the good mussels, french fries and fairly good happy hour. It's a fantastic place to meet up with friends for dinner or drinks any time of the year. They usually play decent music too but I think it's a mix off the owners ipod. read more
