Well, they have a really nice outdoor patio! That's kind of their one perk. Otherwise, it's a bit overpriced and its patrons are a bit on the more obnoxious side... I just don't understand why people in Portland get dressed up to cheap beer outside somewhere, but I'm coming from a crusty NoPo point of view, and thus the whole NW seems a bit too fancy for me. Also, some of this is probably just my own insecurities coming out about seeming out of place and frumpy when I go to places like this. read more

This place became my home away from home after approximately 3 visits. It's up the street from my house, and on my walk commute. I love ALL the staff, especially Carlie (sp?), Joel, Erin, Emily, and Maura (in no particular order ;-) ). Oh, I can't forget the lovely lady with the side braid that works the patio; she's a MAJOR sweetheart. Their food is simply amazing!!! Only negative I can say is, I hope they figure out a different way to prepare the wings so that I don't see red when I bite into them. Bottom line: The food is waaaay above that of your average bar. One word: MUSSELS. I've read some of the reviews about the service and I must admit there are times when I'm out on the patio and I don't know where my peeps are (when they're busy, the servers are very attentive). But, no worries, I like this place and have no problem getting my arse up and going to the bar. Hell, I bus my own table. I just like them and don't want to be considered a customer; just a friend that came ova to drink (that's the Beav for ya). The music is TIGHT and they'll turn the TV inside to whatever you desire. In a nutshell: good food, personable staff, wonderful HH (all day Monday and 4-6 daily, even on weekends... and the discounts are $2+), tasty drinks, and did I mention the staff is the bee's knees? They let kids run out of control on the patio on. They were yelling and screaming. Staff was nice enough and when I asked them they said people were leaving because of them but there's nothing they could do. Sign of weak management that someone didn't step in and control the situation. Think the same poor management it showing up in the kitchen. Had a $13 burger that wasn't very good and served cold. Had their version of ceviche that comes with 5 chips and should be taken off the menu. We spent $70 and had a poor experience. Won't be coming back. read more

Amazing patio, I will give them that...but only that. My eggs were burnt, chicken with mole was rubbery, my husband's breakfast burrito was ungarnished and not wrapped the best. We ordered bloody Mary's same as our neighboring table mates. Ours came out in short glasses while they had pint glasses. We asked if they ordered differently the answer was no. We ordered a beermosa it came out in a plastic 16oz Widmer cup not exactly full while one table over was delivered a 20oz glass pilsner glass. Again no difference in the request in order. Ignored the rest of our dining experience, we felt singled out. Too bad for them because we are over tippers by nature and really low maintenance. Not blown away by this place. read more

My husband and I have always enjoyed the mussels here so we thought we'd try their March dining month menu. It was not good. The mussel chowder was so thick you could literally eat it with a fork. It was kind of like glue in your mouth with each spoonful. The steak entree with fried potatoes and green beans was lukewarm at best. The meat was a bit tough. The potatoes bland and flavorless. The crispy bbq chicken and fried rice was ok but nothing you couldn't purchase at any Asian restaurant. The chocolate cake sucked all moisture from your mouth with each bite. The apple turnover was a bit chewy from being microwaved to warm it up and it was pretty flavorless. We sat at the bar. Th bartender never once asked how our meal was. The entire experience was very disappointing, especially considering we dropped $100 on dinner. Not sure we'll go back now, even for the mussels. read more

We went to this place for dinner. We found out they had mussels. I'm not sure what they are more known for (mussels or beer), but the mussels were really good. We had 3 orders, Provencal, Garlic and Saffron and Tom Yum. They were all really good. We even ordered more bread just to soak up the extra broth. We were seated outside and had to find the working heater, but when we did, we were all good. The price not bad for our meal, we were all full. I love this bar! I'm a regular customer as I live just a couple blocks away. Usually I have the best service, but today was an exception. We sat at our table for over 15 minutes, which was never cleaned. We ordered drinks, but they weren't brought to us. I'm also disappointed by the change in the fries. I will be back and hope they were just having a bad day. read more

It was a busy Saturday in NW Portland and every bar we walked by was filled with people. I had seen North 45 numerous times in the past and that's where we planned to go. So, we got there and were totally surprised to see that there was absolutely NOBODY inside. That seemed odd. My "intuition" told me that maybe they had another room in back or something. Yep, a long narrow hallway out the back led to an outdoor patio. . .and THAT'S where all the customers were. We were greeted immediately back there by a friendly server and we sat at one of the many picnic tables. I enjoyed the patio because of its location which is totally isolated and far removed from the noise, hustle, and bustle of the street way out in front. A pleasant and peaceful atmosphere to sip cocktails and enjoy one of their many available Belgian beers. Overall, here's all the good things about North 45: their drinks were tasty and reasonably priced, the service was friendly and efficient, and I just loved that great patio. I'll come back soon and try their food too. read more

Pretty typical bar fare in a tiny pub. It's kind of dark, but overall a neat atmosphere. Our waitress was friendly and prompt. I got the mussels with the sun dried tomato broth and fries. It was really good. Small, but unique variety of beer. read more

My sister and I went to dinner here awhile back. Before that I had only been there for drinks and love the atmosphere and the patio! It's a great place to hang out in the summer. The food was amazing, though! I ordered mussels and my sister had the blackened chicken salad. The portions were huge and delicious. The pungent smell of mussels doesn't interfere with the awesomeness that is North 45. Like most bars this place has an extensive selection of beverages to get you silly, but I went for the Gargoyle with is made from absinthe. It'll curl your toes and put hair on your chest! The vibe was electric when we were there due to the Olympics. One moment I'm sipping away, and the next I turn to watch Phelps win us another one. We were sitting in one of the window seats, so I was a little shocked when I turned back around to see a huge crowd had gathered outside to watch....with me in between them and the tv...kinda...feels...awkward.... Just an oh-so-average bar on the bustling strip of NW 21st. It's a loud dive-bar, but when I compare it to places like the Central off on SW Ankeny, this bar is nothing special. They had very limited (one item) dessert menu, and beer selection is nothing to write about in comparison to taprooms of places like Labrador or Rogue. Basically, it might be a convenient stop if you happen to be in the area, but it is not a destination I would seek out. read more

I was surprised how packed the place was when I went. I thought it would be more of a restaurant than a bar. Even though it was packed, had a great time. The beer and whisky selection is nice and the menu has a lot of great stuff. I went with an order of the mussels and they blew my mind. The size of these mussels were like hard boiled eggs. The beer they used to stew them in added a great flavor as well. Definitely check this place out. read more

North 45 was a solid place to spend St. Paddy's Day. Being from Chicago I have pretty high St. Patrick's Day expectations and North 45 did not disappoint. Their back covered patio with heat lamps was nice and cozy. The bar and patio were packed making it a little difficult to move around, but the bartenders kept the lines moving and were very friendly as well. We came in for a drink having read about the hidden gem of a back patio. The patio is a little oasis in the upmarket Alphabet District with great picnic tables, outdoor TV, and copper top bar. Prices were reasonable for happy hour and regular prices. The two servers were preoccupied with a corporate happy hour takeover, but were apologetic about our forgotten appetizer and took it off the bill without asking. Would love to return on a less busy night. read more

It's a classy joint - I would come here at least once a week if they charged the same prices as "the Trappist" in Oakland, CA. But they don't. While I love Belgian beer, I do feel like I overspend for them at North 45. The food is borderline incredible and the atmosphere is very good. But I hate feeling like I am overspending on my beer. Four of us came in late on a Friday for some whiskey and g&ts. We were pretty tired from a long work week and the drive down from Seattle but this was a nice chill place to ease into our weekend. I liked the shared table while there were classy fellas sitting next to us, but got annoyed when some d-bags came in to take their place. The atmosphere was great, and I just got all excited at the mention of a backyard tent. I'll have to go back in the summer. Who the hell opens at 4pm on a Friday?? Why have a bad attitude towards your customers when they bring in a party of 12? I like their food and beer but their service needs serious help. If you don't like your job, go work in the sewer where no one has to talk to you. Customers shouldn't feel as though they are wasting your time.
