Tasted like it was made to order, good ratio of cheese to eggplant, eggplant was peeled, breadcrumbs didn't taste like the oil had been sitting for days before frying. Legit sauce. If you love cheesy pizza, you will love North Beach Pizza. I don't pretend to know much about pizza, or particular like it, but my husband and his friends got a deal for North Beach off restaurant.com, so here we are. North Beach resembles an old IHOP building, with it's Alpine A-shaped roof. It's interior is charmingly decorated with vintage signage, art, and photos of their regular customers. We ordered a large pizza for the 4 of us. Half Coit Tower (Mushrooms, pepperoni, italien sausage) and half Golden Gate (a very garlicky sauce, pesto, onion, chicken). The service was good, standard. But the kitchen was a bit slow. It was a Saturday night around 8pm and not particularly busy. There appeared to be a lot of wait staff for the number of eat-in customers there actually were, but they must be front-heavy because it seemed like back--of-the-house could've used a little more help. It took probably 25 minutes for us to get our pizza. When it arrived, it was hot! The cheese was soft and stringy, making it a little awkward to serve the slices, but isn't that what most of us love about pizza? Overall, the pizza was flavorful, but not lifechanging. read more

I strongly suggest to avoid this restaurant. Not only do they tend to have extremely poor customer service, but they are overpriced. They used to have a good vegetarian sub sandwich, but they discontinued it and won't be getting it back. I'd suggest trying one of the many other pizza places on University. This is my neighborhood go-to pizza place, and I've been a regular for at least 15 years. I usually order for delivery - free and fast delivery. Great pizzas, from thin to thick crust, and every topping imaginable. Great quality pizza. If you're a meat lover, I HIGHLY recommend the Coit Tower special - pepperoni, salami, sausage, and mushrooms. Yum! They also offer a selection of pastas, which are ok, as well as hot/cold subs, salads, soup, and entrees (chicken parm, ribs, etc). Pizza is really the star, though. For dining in - it has a cute, local pizzeria vibe, with red and white tablecloths and booth seating. There's usually football or baseball on their TVs. If you're a wheelchair user, don't worry about the booth seating - several of the booths are removable so that you can pull right up to the table with no hassle. read more

Every time I have extra money, I order the extra large pizza with at least 5 toppings and munch down on it for several days. Was pleasantly surprised by a decent (for this region of the country) chicken parm sub/sandwich from here yesterday. I've only had it once and haven't tried the pizza so this is just a review for the one time chicken parm experience. Sure, it came on what seemed more like a Dutch Crunch roll, but it was toasted just the right amount- fresh in the middle and crisp on the outside. The chicken was breaded as all true chicken parm cutlets in a sub should be, and there was alot of it (2 layers) so that the bread roll to chicken ratio was a good one. The marinara sauce was fine- not as delicious as my old housemate from Italy used to make but maybe not Prego or Ragu either. Good amount of melted parmesan cheese. The price is right and it even comes with a tiny little side of romaine and a couple of tomato slices, pepperoncini's and vinaigrette type dressing. Dressing was a little too sugary for my taste but I did appreciate some fresh veggies to round out my warm meal. It didn't match what you get at the pizza and deli joints in the northeast where I grew up, but considering all my attempts at finding something close to it in the greater oakland/berkeley area this is one of the closest in satisfaction if you're not too picky. I'll order it again when my next craving for chicken parm hits. Crossing my fingers the decency of this one is consistent. read more

I was on the way to work a swingshift and was craving something new. I called a to go order and everything went fine and food was promised on time. Upon arrival at the restaurant I noticed how dead it was on a Thursday night (not a very good sign). There was only one other party there at 7:30pm. The employees weren't too friendly. Don't go here, even if you got stuck in a 90-minute traffic jam and are running late to the Berkeley Rep and missed your reservations at Downtown by an hour and need food fast. There's a North Beach Pizza in San Mateo. I've never eaten there. Generally I don't eat much pizza and generally I avoid chains. But after a full day hanging out with my bro's kids I thought to give them a nice treat. I gave my nephew my iPhone and told him to use the Yelp app and find a pizza place. Basically I said, if you heard of the place then we're not going there: I.e., no Dominos, no Round Table, and hell no Little Caesars. Finally we stopped here because the kids were starving. The waitresses were very friendly with pretty smiles. We ordered pizza with pepperoni and garlic. My nephew proclaimed this the best pizza he ever had. The crust was second only to Domino's new garlic crust. WTH? Well I never tried the Domino's new crust, but how good can it be? The ingredients were good quality... nice chewy cheese and just the right amount of sauce. The pepperoni wasn't too spicy for the kids. The crust was nicely chewy, maybe 3.5 stars. HAHAHA! North Beach's pizza looks funny!! XD Looks exactly like frozen microwaveable pizza you get at the supermarket. The crust is nice and crispy, but I cannot call this quality pizza. I also echo the sentiments of fellow Yelpers that North Beach Pizza has surprisingly low reviews! We have been here a few times and ordered take-out, and each time we've munched on some good, hearty pizza. We love the North Beach special - it's basically a combo, and they're pretty generous with the toppings, which is a lot better than some of the other cheapo places some reviewers have mentioned. Also good is the Golden Gate special! Since these 2 are our favorites, we like to get half and half. Another plus is North Beach always has coupons that you can apply for discounts or free drinks, etc. Granted, the pizza isn't cheap, but it's a reasonable price for what you get. Yes, the decor isn't swanky or anything, but lots of buildings in Berkeley are old and it doesn't affect the taste of food. We've eaten here many times and they never bat an eye when my husband and I order two pizzas with the same toppings only mine is thin crust with easy sauce and his normal. They are not high-brow so don't expect an extensive wine list. However, they are one of the few pizza joints who also have fantastic salads sized for two. I had never been here before "ending up here on a whim". I'm glad I had not read the reviews prior to pulling in because we would not have stopped here and we actually had a really good pizza. OK - I will admit the service here is slow as can be so don't go if you have anywhere at all to be later in the day. We seated ourselves and wasnt sure if they knew we were there due to the amount of time it took to have them A) bring us a menu and B) come back and take our order. All said and done and probably 40 minutes later we were served our pizza. The toppings were generous and yummy! My girls and I kept commenting on how good the pizza was. I'm glad we waited because it crossed my mind to walk out due to the slow service. The thing that kept me sitting was the amount of patrons dining inside. I kept thinking "well, it must be good". The pizza did not disappoint. To keep the pace moving I sent my girls up for a to go box and I paid in cash. It would have been a much lengthier visit had we not done those two things. TLDR Version: It took over *two hours* to get my food. Long version: After coming back from vacation, not having a full-fridge nor a car to go to the grocery store, I was eagerly looking forward to ordering a pizza! Now, I used the NBP online ordering service, which is hosted through a 3rd party site, as you cannot do it directly for the Berkeley location. My arrival time was quoted at 45-60 minutes, which is what I expected. What I did not expect was that, after checking my order status and calling support to get an update on my food, was that it would take two hours. Nor was the bill that was presented to me accurate of what my actual receipt was (I was given a discount from the online service for the inconvenience). As for the pizza itself: half of the toppings fell off of the crust because of oil, and the half of the garlic bread wasn't even baked. No matter how hungry I will be after going on vacation, I do not think I will be going back here. read more

While the Chicken in the Chicken Parmesan was cooked correctly - breaded and lightly fried which just enough crisp - everything else about this place was really disappointing. Everything that comes with the Chicken Parm is incredibly sub-par: from the watery sauce on the spaghetti to the soggy vegetables that also came on the side. I should have learned from the above takeout and stuck to takeout pizza but I gave the on-site dining experience a try instead. There were gnats hovering over our food the entire time, the fried calamari didn't come with anything to dip into (when traditionally there hold be some marinara or something) and our waitress was confused the whole time regarding our check: the concept of the groupon was lost on her. We always have the nicest server ever- a sweet young woman with an Eastern European accent. There's not a lot else to recommend the place, though; the pizza's okay- boring.
