What did we do wrong? My wife and I drove up to Long Beach from Oregon City for a long overdue fun and local overnighter. What started with great service and an OK craft beer selection got weird when my wife went for our second round of Boneyard IPA and was served water. We were like, OK? My wife was not drunk and I was driving so, what the heck right? Then we waited for quite a while for the large pizza that had we ordered to go. The restaurant was all but empty at this point. We waited for such a time that we felt very unwelcome, given that water dis and all. So I went inside to close out our tab and see about the pizza just in time to hear a female worker ask the only male worker, likely her husband, "Oh, they didn't leave?". This was clearly in direct reference to my wife and I. Ouch! We went to spend some money with a PNW small business. The pizza quality was what should be considered embarrassing to any respectable business. Two words: Canned. Mushrooms. We won't be back. And if they didn't want our business for whatever reason, oh well, just say so. No biggie. We felt totally profiled and shamed at this establishment. I can only imagine any problem as having an appearance that doesn't suit a social perception. Not a good experience. Some people's compass at this joint needs some recalibrating. NBT has quickly become our go-to place for good food, beer, cocktails and entertainment. Where did I begin? OK how about the beer? Check out the board for the large selection of craft beers from local brewery's, including North Jetty and Ft. George. Drafts and growler fills are available as are a selection of canned beers, including a $3 Rainier (as of this writing they also have Irish Death for $3). Yummy big Pizza & cheesy calzones with all the choices of toppings your heart could desire. Burgers & paninis are great. My favorite are the grill choices - out on the patio the grill master prepares burgers, hot dogs, oysters, corn on the cob, steamed clams and the best - Tuesday steak night! For $16 you get a salad, baked potato and generous cut of grilled steak (the cut varies each week from T-bone, filet, top sirloin or ribeye). Mon is pizza night - 3-topping medium pizza for $12. Craft cocktails are delicious (the best cherries, too - Oregon maraschinos and Italian bings. There is live music Thu, Fri & Sat on the "Columbia Stage" featuring the best local talent playing a wide range of tunes - blues, country, rock, oldies. On Sun there is a jam session if you want to join in! The owners are great - hands-on and doing a lot to make the LBT even better, with improvements to parking and keeping the menu fresh. This is a 5-star rating for a great little bar/restaurant; not expensive "fine dining", but good food & drink and a lively crowd. Stopped in here after a beer at the North Jetty and Tap Room on the server's and a local at the bar reccomend it. Mariners on the tube, felt a bit like a locals vibe but no one was unfriendly and for gosh sakes it was Monday night and I'm sure they stay home on the weekends to avoid the tourists. It was a full service bar with one server who was also the bartender. He hustled and gave good service with about 20 customers. About 8 beers on tap. I had the the North Jetty Red my wife the Iron Horse Irish Death. Had a large ranch chicken bacon pizza. Although it took a while to get it out of the kitchen it was actually very tasty with a good crust amounts of ingredients cooked perfectly. read more

The atmosphere is less than desirable. It lacks a lot of things and could easily be improved on and made to a great location. The owner told us they don't take credit or debit cards "because of Obama, and his laws" and we all had a slightly awkward chuckle until we realized she wasn't joking. The nachos were.... Not something anyone should eat. The hats hanging all over the ceiling give it kind of a extremely redneck vibe. The waitstaff (or from the two times I've been there) is a single person who can't handle the small crowd that should be expected at any bar. Go for entertaining yourself but be warned. I can sum up the Pioneer Tavern in three words, "Absolutely No Character." If you like drinking beer in an echoing room with cafeteria style tables then this place is for you. I would have had a more enjoyable experience if I'd picked up a six pack from the grocery across the street and sat in the parking lot to drink. On the other hand, people who go there like it...but then some folks drink Miller Lite in a can and see nothing wrong with that either. read more

So this is the second time I have tried this place and I won't be back. It has great potential if they ever decide they should have more than 3 people working on a Friday with one delivery driver. If you want any food in less than an hour and a half you should probably call in and ask for delivery and then carry your pizza in. Sadly this was deja vu from the first time I came in 7 months ago. Three staff working their butts off to cook, clear tables, get and fill drinks, take cash, make the food all to no avail. They can not keep up with the demand however I noticed if you call in for delivery this seems to be the priority. It's not the 6 person table of friends you brought in to order food and drinks for hours, if we could have, while listening and dancing to the great bands. What makes more money? One pizza delivery or 6 people for the works? The owner, like the first time, arrives too late to try to stem the flood of disappointments for the room. Maybe the owner should value her staff more by not sabotaging their efforts to provide quality service and create happy customers. We got hangry and when food finally arrived it was burnt pizza and salad was forgotten. We ate it because we were all starving by that point. I assume the only people who write 5 star reviews are coming in when it's slow or just have a drink or two if they are lucky. So sad I can not recommend this place. read more

Excellent local bar just outside of Long Beach. It's close to a couple popular hotels. The service was great and very friendly. They had live music on both Friday and Saturday. We stopped in on a Saturday...great music from just a two person crew, it wasn't to loud or crazy. It has a large outside area which would be great in the spring and summer to sit out. Reasonably priced for cocktails and beers. We did not eat but the pizzas looked temping. Definitely will return. One star off just because we didn't eat. I will update read more

I've been to the Pioneer Tavern several times, just because a friend of mine has a house out in Long Beach. The best part about the Pioneer Tavern is the people. They've always been friendly. There isn't much in the line of food, but they usually have a decent selection of beer. There are pool tables, and a jukebox, and on any given night, there is a local or two or three hanging out. So if you find yourself on the North end of Long Beach, check it out. Just make sure you eat before you go. read more

This review is solely for the pizza delivery, as I have not been to the tavern under new ownership. I love Long Beach (we are summertime residents) but hate that I can't get food delivered like I can in Portland. I saw the "we deliver" sign at the NBT and decided to give a chance. I called at 4:30 and was told I could have a pizza at me door in less than 45 minutes, so I ordered one. 39 or so minutes later, the friendly pizza delivery guy was here. My pepperoni pizza was still very hot and looked great. It was a very solid pizza- I am 99% sure that the crust was made fresh, and it was well cooked. All in all, it was a good pizza delivered quickly, and that is all a guy can ask- I can't get any better pizza delivered to my house in PDX. Mike C read more

The pizza has potential to be the best ever but ours was severely under cooked and doughy. There was one person working both kitchen and bar, she was more worried about us waiting which we were not at all in a hurry....Make sure to get yours well done and you'll have the best pizza ever....or a plate of soggy dough. My wife and I stopped in on Monday April 10th for a drink and dinner. The staff is always friendly and neighbors were there to say hello and catch up. Our bartender/server was Alex and she is simply amazing. She is professional, friendly and efficient. Everyone felt welcomed and were served in a timely manner. We ordered the special - a 12" pizza with 3 toppings for $12. Contrary to the recent review in the local paper - the crust was thin, crisp and perfect. The veggies were fresh (you get the choice of having them sliced or diced) and the sauce was a terrific balance of tart with a hint of the tomato's sweetness. It arrived piping hot with the fixings (crushed red pepper flakes & grated Parmesan cheese). Yes we will be returning - sorry no pictures the pizza didn't last long enough for a picture. Small, seemingly local hang-out on the outskirts of downtown Long Beach, which my husband and I like. Full of fun older people; Cash only. ATM on premises. Good pizza! They were playing the Women's World Cup and, of course, the Mariners game. The bartender was SUPER nice, friendly and helpful. They had local craft beers which were only $3.75!!!
