I have lived on the peninsula for over a year, and the best meal I have had was at Castaways on Feb. 4th, 2026. My husband and I ordered beverages and an appetizer of Korean bbq pork skewers. Pork tenderloin was wrapped in bacon, put on skewers, and served with a delicious sweet and spicy bbq sauce. For dinner I ordered the seafood lasagna. It was served with toasted baguette slices and was surrounded by a cheesy sauce that was so delicious. The lasagna was made with a white sauce and was full of shrimp and crab. It amazed me how much seafood was in the dish. My husband ordered the salmon and a baked potato. The salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned. It came with a side of squash and mixed veggies. We were more than pleased with the quality of the food ordered. The service was top notch. Our server was attentive and kept up with drink refills and making sure we were cared for. We sat in a booth, and the atmosphere was quiet and made us feel comfortable. There were full tables around us, but it didn't feel like we were rushed at all. It was a great dining experience. My four-top was underwhelmed. Ev started with a Caesar salad, calamari, & clam chowder. The main courses moved onto A crab melt, a burger, a club sandwich, & steamers. The service was without complaint. We have been patronizing this establishment for the last 25 years whenever we would be able to leave the city hide on the beach for a few days, with or without & well before kids. Castaways was the highlight of our Long Beach visit. The decor inside is awesome - lots of very cool photos of Long Beach from the past - and the vibes are great. It's very centrally located on the main strip. We ended up sitting at the bar to avoid a wait for a table (the entire bar section is open seating) and the bartender was super friendly. I ordered a steelhead burger with garlic fries off the specials menu and my husband got the Lighthouse cheeseburger. The food came out super fast and was SO delicious. I'll be thinking about those garlic fries for a very long time. The food was hot, super fresh, and so tasty. I cannot wait to go back and try some more things off the menu! read more

Took a road trip thru Long Beach. Out of all the restaurants to choose from, I'm glad we stop at the Castaways. Great service, thank you Karleigh B. Fish and chips are really good. Just the right amount of batter. Ahi cafe salad is delicious, a great combo veggies, fruits. They had a lady playing the violin and she was really good. Will be back. We had a lovely first meal on the coast here. We were quite surprised because we just went here on a whim without much research. My husband a tasty bowl of chowder then fish tacos that were absolutely perfect. My seared tuna bowl was fresh and delicious. The ambience was a bit sporty but everyone was pleasant. I had a great dinner this evening, the Ahi Tuna Csfe Salad. The tuna slices were coated in sesame seeds and expertly seared. Beautiful! Gorgeous avocado, diced mango, cucumbers, greens and a sesame dressing. Yum! I got through half of it and will enjoy the rest tomorrow. Lovely server, checked in on us a couple of times, which is appreciated. My sweetie got the salmon and enjoyed it. read more

Last visit was back in 2013, time for an update. Again, this was our first meal after arriving in Long Beach (6/16/25). Nice to see it thrive after our previous visit 12 years ago. We timed it well because both the bar and restaurant was full house during our onsite meal. We shared their clam chowder. Tasty. I opted for the Club Sandwich with garlic tots. Goodness such a generous entree. This took me three sittings to finish it. The Homie had the Captain's Plate which included cod, clam strips, oysters, and shrimp. All well battered, seafood remained tender, and perfectly executed. This came with sides like broccolini, sweet potatoes, and whipped garlic potatoes. I snagged some bites...wow, flavor packed! Our waitperson was very friendly, checked in on us, and kept us well hydrated. No room for dessert, but we patted our stomachs carrying our takeout boxes back to the car. 11 years after our first visit, I'm happy to report that Castaway's still has 5-star clam chowder -- among the best I've ever had. The atmosphere was inviting and cozy, and the service was competent throughout. We were there right at opening, and you could tell the chowder was freshly made, and it was chock full of goodness, in a base that wasn't too thick. It was perfect. Unfortunately, the scallop "shareable" dish that we ordered wasn't quite on the same level. The presentation was gorgeous, with the seared scallops lined up on a square plate, in a bed of their "zesty cream sauce" -- and freshly grilled French baguette slices on the corners. But the scallops themselves were overcooked and slightly rubbery, with a bit too much "seafood-y" flavor. Definitely not on par with the best scallops I've had. So moral of the story... definitely get the chowder when you go to Castaway's. read more

Food was delicious (with the exception of the seared ahi, not much flavor and wasn't a good eating experience as there was the stringy part of the ahi made it hard to cut/eat). The appetizers were great. My pasta dish was good however it was a little heavier than I expected. The way it was described on the menu it sounded like a lighter dish. Carla, was covering the bar and hi tops. My lovely wife and I sat at the high top nearest the pass. With a past in restaurant operations, I was very please to encounter a staff focused upon their guests and service level rather than gathering at the pass or nearest wait station to gossip or climb on their phones. I inquired of the manager, and was informed that it was their day off and one of the active staff was the lead for the shift. To hold this level of service when there is a manager present is one thing. To see this from a team and their lead, is cause for applause! We ate here twice during our stay in Long Beach, and both times the food was excellent. The servers were all incredibly friendly and welcoming. When we were unsure about the clam chowder, they offered us a sample--which we ended up loving. I had the island tacos with blackened cod. The portion includes two flavorful tacos and a side; I opted to switch mine to a small Caesar salad, which was fresh and delicious. The fish tasted fresh, and the seasoning was spot on. I also had the PNW mocktail, which was flavorful and delicious--perfectly balanced and refreshing. As a group, we shared the fried calamari, which our 11- and 13-year-olds both enjoyed. We also ordered a side of bread that wasn't listed on the menu--sliced baguette with olive oil, garlic, parsley, and Parmesan. It was a simple but incredibly tasty addition. The ambiance was great--relaxed and inviting, with a coastal charm that made the whole dining experience even more enjoyable. This is a lively busy place. Food was good, tasted fresh. The fries portions that accompanied the fish and the halibut sandwich were good, however the size of the sandwich and the 3 fish pieces were on the small size for the price. The fettuccine pesto with crab was very good, but the winner of the dinner was the award winning chowder. It was delicious. Again portions are on the small side. I'm aware that prices are a reflection of the inflation that is happening everywhere so I understand that they have to price their food accordingly. First time visiting and we had an excellent meal with the family here. Everyone raved about their meals and the food came out quite fast, considering it was dinner time on a Wednesday night in October, they weren't very busy. The service was okay, not quite as attentive as we'd have liked, but adequate. The decor is nice inside as well, but not stuffy or super fancy, so I'd feel comfortable having either a casual meal or a nicer special occasion meal here. read more

And a bottle of wine, which we did not finish, but the waitress corked it, and sealed it in a bag to take back to our room. Have never seen that, and we were impressed. Let's get back to the meal...it was so very good. The salmon was by far the highlight! Wanted to love the squash mash that is their specialty with each meal apparently, but it was way too sweet for our taste. We tried adding pepper to make it palatable to us, but nope. Has a good experience here. Google said it opens at 11 but that is wrong they open at 11:30. Best to get there early because it gets busy and the wait can be an hour long. They don't take reservations. Food wise, we ordered the oysters, Cioppino, steamed clams, Brussels sprouts, lasagna and the burger. The steamed clams had a bit too much oil. The Cioppino was good and thick. I hoped that the oyster shell was cleaned more but it was delicious. The brussel sprouts was good. The calamari was great! Although not that special but just fresh! In general the seafood is all fresh so that is good. A bit expensive but seafood was good! read more

Gluten free clam chowder was awesome! So tasty. Clams were tender; it was creamy without being super thick. Had the grilled cod fish tacos for gluten freedom. Tasty! Only the bartender on duty, but she kept up with all of the tables. We were cozy sitting in the bar, but the main dining is also very nice. read more

Ate around 3pm on Saturday, it wasn't busy but for some reason it took around 20 minutes just for our waitress to get or food and drinks order. We were considering walking out because she was talking to every table but ours. She was a little snarky but lucky was ending her shift because we didn't see her again. Probably had a long shift and just wanted to get off. Other than that the food came out so quickly and our new waitress was super sweet. They almost served us the wrong food but it was for a different table. I have to say their Bloody Marry's were the best we ever drank. The cider on draft was a Portland cider company I think it was blood orange guava. They say they have the best claim chowder but it was a little to watery for my liking. The fish and chips were very tasty as well. The ambience was nice till our first waitress came around we only interacted with her maybe three times and all three times their was something off putting and or snarky. After she left we had a splendid time. The food was more on the pricey side but I'd say it's almost worth it. Would've been a 5 star if we didn't have to wait for a salty interaction. read more

You know a place is delicious when you aren't hungry walking in and you end up ordering more food! We needed a quick break from the beach so we originally came in for an oyster shooter and a cocktail. We saw the clam chowder go by and we had to try it. Then my daughter decided she needed the clam strips. The clam chowder was fantastic! It had so many chopped clams that it actually tasted like clams and not potatoes or filler. It wasn't overly thick or watery. It was the perfect consistency. The clam strips were fresh. Once you bit into the light battering they melted. They weren't chewy. The Valentine oyster shooters are mine and my husband's second favorite we have ever had. The flavor combination was so delicious that my daughter decided to try one. After we all finished our first one we ordered a second round. The bloody ceaser was above average. The ambiance started off quite pleasant but quickly plummeted. My daughter just got out of camp and we wanted to hear all about it. The noise level was so high we were litterally having to shout back and forth with our server. It can get very noisy. I'm talking like being at the stadium during a UFC match. Pro tip: if you get in early enough try not to sit by the door!!! We were right next to the hostess station and the ammount of people that crowd in and leave the door open is unbelievable. It doesn't matter if it's freezing, windy, or raining..... people will leave that door open. It does tend to ruin your meal when you are shivering or you have to give up your coat so your child isn't uncomfortable and they can eat their food. People tend to lack common decency these days so maybe a giant note about closing the door behind them would help. I felt terribly for the three little boys right next to the door that were shivering so hard one spilled his drink. Bring an extra jacket incase someone needs it and be prepared for the noise. read more

Everything was absolutely wonderful here! We were visiting Long Beach for a girls trip and this resturant came highly recommend. They resturant is super cute inside and has a rustic feel. We were seated in the bar area and they have bench seating or pub tables. Our server was so kind and sweet. She recommend so many good things. We ordered drinks and got the bacon parmesan fries as an appetizer and of course oyster shooters. The fries were AMAZING!! There was so much fresh garlic and cheese- galore. The oyster shooter was phenomenal!! One of the biggest oysters I've ever gotten in a shooter. I ordered the open face crab sandwich with the side of clam chowder. The chowder was chocked full of bacon, clams and potato. It was soooo flavorful. My sandwich was just ok. The crab tasted a little rubbery. Still, everything else was great!! The food and service were average. We liked the menu because it was more than just fried seafood and burgers like most coastal restaurants. They had grilled seafood, tacos, cioppino, and dinner salads. First, there is nothing island about their island tacos. There is no pineapple, nor lime. The server even admitted they havent put pineapple in their island tacos for months. We should have been comped something for the old bait and switch. Instead of island tacos, we just got served regular tacos. Second, the seafood in the cioppino was good. There was shrimp, crab, salmon, and mussels. Portion was good. However, the broth was like a thick creamy marinara sauce. That's not cioppino. Next, the service was spotty. It took awhile before we could order our food. It was at least 10-15 mins. The server was friendly and helpful, but I think she had too many tables. The upside was the restaurant was very clean, nice ambiance, and the coconut shrimp app was delicious. read more

Called in an order for pickup on a rainy Thursday afternoon. We ordered a cheeseburger with fries, a cup of ranch, a cup of clam chowder and an order of garlic bread. ($37.50 ) The cheeseburger and fries were great my daughter said. Except for they charged us for her ranch that we never got. Upon opening the garlic bread there were 3 little peices of bread that were covered in cold garlic chunks and topped with huge chunks of parmesean cheese. The bread itself was cold to the touch. The cheese looked like it had been sat under a heat lamp to make it seem like it was heated. My main reason for our order was the clam chowder. Im a local of 20 years. I have sent numerous customers to this location for the chowder alone. The chowder had huge chunks of chewy bacon and was watery and tasteless as could be. When my daughter took the bread and chowder back for a refund the server Marissa told us that she would refund us for the bread, but not the chowder because everyone else today said the chowder was good?! Today, marks the day I will never recommend this restaurant for anything besides a drink at the bar or a plain cheeseburger to eat ever again. read more
