We were clearly not local, but everyone made us feel at home. The sweet tea was perfect, sweet but not sickish. The special was veggie beef stew and a grilled cheese. Both were simple and delicious. Our family of four just stopped here at The North Star on our way to the Shenandoah Valley. We enjoyed a late breakfast consisting of biscuits and gravy, pancakes, bacon, hash browns, sausage, and coffee. My grandfather drove from Roanoke to eat at your restaurant because of the raving review in the paper. He arrived 3:05 and was told he was to late and they were closed. What kind of restaurant first closes at 3 and second turns away a guest that traveled to eat there! Being a general manager myself, my guests come first. What makes them happy makes me happy. Wow, where to start. After 1.5 hrs we watched ever single table but ours get served before us including ones that just walked in. We asked the lone server twice and were told they were regulars so ... as if that is an excuse. Every. Single. Table. My husband was literally reduced to eating the jelly packets on the table (pictures available upon request). Left $5 for 3 coffees then left. Server said not my fault as we were leaving. Only cash here no credit cards -- in my opinion seems sketchy. Couldn't wait for breakfast any longer as they would be switching to lunch soon (not that we would get that either as we aren't regulars apparently). Nice fresh flowers on the table though. I stopped by on the recommendation of friends, and my first meal, on Friday afternoon, was wonderful. Generous portions, inexpensive price tag, great service. Based on that experience I decided to go back on Saturday evening. Boy, what a difference a day made! I ordered the rib-eye steak, and it was probably the worst steak I've ever had. Not much lean meat to the steak, and what there was, while tender, was totally tasteless. I ordered fries, and they were overcooked and hard. The cornbread was cold and pretty tasteless, too. I should've just left everything on the table and gone somewhere else. The service was terrible, and when I paid, I was short-changed $5. When I called it to the waitress's attention, there was no apology. She just handed me the $5 without comment. I had planned to go back on Sunday for breakfast, but decided not to. Amazing food, great people! We stopped here on our drive from Harrisonburg toward Roanoke on a road trip after missing a different restaurant. It's a small place and we were kind of skeptical but after being greeted we sat down. The bacon cheeseburger was amazing! If you don't have a large appetite, two can share. I also like her BLT sandwiches, hamburgers are awesome and a wonderful Chief Salad too. This was a really cool place to stop on our way from Virginia to Chattanooga Tn.! We had the burgers and they were fresh, large and cooked great! I live in NY, food heaven, most of my life, but I spent 4 1/2 wonderful years in Buchanan, Va. There are many splendid things about Buchanan, including its incredible natural setting, the wilderness, kayaking and hiking all around it, including the James River running through it, it's Civil War look and its welcoming people. For me, one of the highlights was the small, friendly little "diner" right outside town, near I-81 - the North Star. The food is delicious. The price is right. The atmosphere is great. The owner, Debbie is great (I'm presuming she is still running things). I haven't had a chance to go back for a few years (it's a 8-9 hr. drive and forget about flying - $$$$$$). But, when I have, it is a must for me to have breakfast there every day, if I can, even if I'm staying in Roanoke, a half-hour away. I love NY, but I miss Buchanan and I miss this place. If you are ever heading down I-81 and you get to exit 162, get off and head a little north on Rte. 11 somewhere between a 1/2 to a mile, and you will find it on your right. I'd stop in on Buchanan too, a little further north, although you might find it sleepy if there is no event going on. But, it's a beautiful place. read more

We stopped in this restaurant while driving South on Rt. 11 because it was packed with cars. We placed our order and an hour and a half later after watching everyone else in the restaurant get served, including those who had just walked in the door 10 minutes before, we paid for the coffee we got and left. When we asked the waitress where are food was and why the fellow who had just walked in got served she said well he's a regular. Since that's the way they treat people that are not regulars this one is off my list. By the way looking at other people's food, it looks like it's probably delicious. read more

Authentic, non-pretentious local place. Ordered 2 pancakes (should have only ordered one, but I ate both), 2 sausage patties and coffee. Total price was $4.85. The local regulars get their own coffee and kept coming by and refilling my cup. They also bus their own tables - I didn't. Only one waitress so the service is not real quick but the food is worth the wait. If you want modern surroundings and prefab food with quick service, this isn't your place. Great alternative to the fast food/gas station food road trip standard. Stopped for lunch on a short trip. Kids got chicken and cheeseburger kid's meals. Adults ordered BLT's, which came with ample bacon and nice thick cut tomatoes (because seriously, what's more annoying than paper thin tomatoes). All meals came with crinkle cut fries. Food wasn't anything out of this world, but hit the spot and was crazy inexpensive (around $21 to feed our family of 5). Staff was friendly. As a bonus for us, we are outside at an adjacent grassy area with picnic tables. This gave us a chance to let our dog out and let us stretch our legs instead of getting everything to go and eating on the road since we can't exactly leave the pup in the car. Looks like a place for locals. Two police officers eating lunch when we got there (isn't it always the case that local cops know all the good places to eat?). Not sure how this place stays so busy. We tried it a number of times and every time the food was bland or overcooked. The last time I went I ordered pork chops. They were paper thin and like trying to eat leather! Oh, and worst of all they ONLY take cash. Who carries cash anymore?!? Not really horrible but it is 2015 people! read more
