I scheduled an appointment with Northern Auto after trying to schedule an appointment with another repair shop in Ferndale. I was was not able to get through to the Ferndale shop, despite numerous attempts, as their number went to a fax machine. I went to Northern Auto's website and it was a very user friendly way to schedule the appointment. Plus, I received both text and email communications. They even respond to questions via text! The team was professional and Kamile, who does the intake, asked all the right questions to get to the root of my issue and assist the tech with the diagnosis. They finished my car in a day, and the issue I brought it in for seems to be resolved and my car is riding like new. This was my first time at Northern Auto Repairs and I am thrilled with the results. I had been working with another local garage for several years but in the last year, I just didn't feel I was getting the quality service I had previously experienced. So, I decided to try Northern Auto based on word of mouth and their great reviews. I called, spoke with Rodney, then took my car over and the experience was great! It was like taking my car to a terrific doctor - Rodney listened, asked questions and recorded its "symptoms" and I felt like my car was going to be taken care of by top-notch auto repair experts. Based on what I said, they spent time doing a thorough diagnostic check and called me with the results. Rodney put a name to what was wrong with my car, explained why it was happening and the recommended fixes. He quoted a very reasonable price for the work. Terrible! I will never return here or recommend this place. Rodney fits the "used car salesman" stereotype. Just not trustworthy and will tell you anything to make an extra buck. Long story, short... They tell me my car will be ready 1-2 days, just need a part from Ohio. 6 days later my car is ready. And then all the sudden after fixing it, Rodney calls and says there are other issues and it's 1k more. I like supporting local businesses, this one will never get my support again. read more

I had gone to a dealership and they had recommended to me that the rotors were scored from rocks and needed to be smoothed out. The dealership didn't take the wheels off the car to make the determination. This was to cost $125.00. Wanting a second opinion, I went to Northern Auto Repair. They pulled the wheels off and said that the rotors were in good condition and didn't need any smoothing. Much like Brett S, experience from 1/2/2023 the car was brought in for a battery replacement and the front manager told my daughter's friend who brought the car in for us that he had to do some diagnostics, but did not quote her a fee for all these diagnostics. Turns out we were charged over $250 for the unwanted/unnecessary diagnostics and now we have to go to the dealer to get the battery replaced as their cost was $100 more than the local dealer. You draw whatever conclusions you want, but I am the owner of the car and spoke to this manager and he was not concerned about the "communication error" and that we did not expect them to do ANY diagnosis and bill us for it, so pay up. Not a great experience, live and learn. read more

Aug 2015 - This is my edited review where I remove the word "untrustworthy", include more pricing detail from my records, and give them one extra star for trying real hard. Thanks for the certified letter by the way. I hadn't seen one of those in decades. I forgot that I had to go to the Detroit Post Office to pick it up because my post office quit handling them years ago. Imagine my surprise when it was more unwanted mail from Northern Auto Repairs regarding a poor decision and an unpleasant experience from a year-and-half ago. I took my car in for some needed repair and chose Northern because it was close and had favorable ratings. When I picked up my car they told me I would soon need about $600 repairs - largely for replacing all four brakes. I was shocked at how much they would charge and highly skeptical that my car with 50,000 miles on it would need all four brakes replaced at the same time. I had always understood from my retired-brake-engineer father that the front brake pads wear out faster than the back brakes. Some quick comparison shopping taught me that I could get all 4 brakes done for less than $200 with a coupon at Firestone. Still I didn't think I should be needing brake pads at all at 50k miles. Meanwhile a deluge of marketing mail began arriving in my mailbox and email. A few months later I had a mechanic friend replace the front pads and the old ones were about half worn. They did not need replacing, just as I'd suspected. Still I wasn't motivated to write a negative review until until Northern sent one of those fake-check coupons designed to look like a tax return check. You know the ones with the official warnings on the outside, "$2000 or 5 YEARS IMPRISONMENT". Northern doesn't think that kind of marketing is deceptive, just kind of funny. Besides all that marketing works (just not for me). Why else would the big guys like Suburban Group Dealerships send out all the sh*t they do? If you are looking for someone to point out to you all the things that might go wrong with your car and set you up to pay for prevention and repairs on a schedule so you can feel like you are doing everything in your power to keep your car from breaking down, then I'd say NAR is for you. However, if you are looking to pay a fair price for the repair you need now, without worrying about some repair you may need later; then I suggest look elsewhere. read more

Awesome local repair shop: reasonable rates, great customer service, timely repairs and good mechanics. I took in my VW Jetta for something minor, and they sent me a digital inspection (with pictures) explaining the issue. I called and the mechanic working on my vehicle went over the details before making any repairs. I got my car back the same day, and they vacuumed my floor mats and left me a cookie with an oil change coupon. My only advice is to call ahead of time as they're typically busy. read more

She is very friendly and takes time to get to know you and welcome you as a customer. I also met the owner, John, when I brought my SUV in for repairs. He's an affable guy who's been in the business at his Woodward Ave. shop for 50 years this year. He likewise took some time to casually chat with me and share some stories and insights about the business as well as for the problem I was coming in with. I was delighted and surprised by the shop's very modern and convenient text-messaging system to keep you updated on your vehicle's status during service. This included diagnostic findings with indexed photographs (including a shot of the extensively draped/covered interior Re: COVID precautions to assure you of their high level of hygiene during service), explanations from the mechanic, and an itemized list of repairs, parts, and labor charges to complete the job. I'm a 'car guy' and everything on that bill was fair. They showed excellent transparency in the costs, and listed other incidental maintenance services for my vehicle they could offer without any high-pressure sales or up-charge vibes. Speedy service, I was in and out done before 2 PM same day. I even got a follow up text from the owner 5 days later to inquire of my level of satisfaction. You can drop off your vehicle and know nothing about cars and trust that they are honest. Plus they put a 24,000 mile, 2 year warranty on their work that they will honor nationwide. Surprisingly disappointed with the staff here, specifically one employee. Brought my car here to be looked at for a door handle issue. Was charged for a inspection fee when there was specifically no inspection mentioned on paperwork I was given. Front "manager" tried to pull a fast one and sell me a bunch of repairs without addressing the issue I came in for. When brought to his attention that there was no inspection noted he claimed it was an "internal error". Woman working at front understood their issue and provided refund and handled situation appropriately. Don't love trying to support a small company and one of their employees comes off as a greaseball. Owners are apparently out of town for over a month, which is understood but surprising for this busy of a time. As others have mentioned, would try multiple other places in area prior to coming here. read more

This was my first time at Northern Auto and I was really impressed. I took my Escape in to fix the A/C on the hottest day of the year - a little worried that I might get overcharged. But it was very reasonable. They also provided an extensive check-up (with pictures & estimate) of other stuff that may need repair. While that was more expensive (& I didn't do it) it does let me know future things I may need to tend to. I was especially impressed with the Contactless COVID-19 safety measures they took - including plastic covers on the gear shifter and steering wheel as well as paper to protect the carpet. Had another trip to Northern last week. This time, it was for my 2004 Ford Econoline conversion van. We were planning on going away for the weekend, and the brake light decided to light up on Wednesday. Great timing. I took it to Northern on Thursday morning, without an appointment, and they got it in to look at it, and had the repairs completed by 4 PM on Friday. As usual, they were courteous , and they did a fantastic job helping me out. They've even followed up to see if I'm having any issues. I really appreciate all they've done to help me out! read more

Very disappointed My son's car needed alignment. They quoted $103. When we dropped the car off the price doubled to $207 because they needed to loosen up 4 extra bolts for "camber" adjustment which is a part of alignment procedure. Carter, Camber and Toe. After a first test drive car was still slightly pulling to the side and there was rattling noise in the front because they forget to tighten something up. Had to return car back to the shop. They refused to refund extra charge. Will be calling credit card company to challenge this transaction. Do not recommend this shop. read more

UNETHICAL. OVERPRICED. UNPROFESSIONAL. Such a big departure from my first visit in June. Now I understand the conflicting reviews Northern Auto consistently receives on "Yelp." If you don't want to read about my entire experience, just skip down to the section that starts with "COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF" to learn about truly unethical implications of this business. But here's the whole story for folks who enjoy this sort of thing. I dropped off my car at Northern Auto at 9:30am yesterday to do follow-up from the air-conditioning recharge they did in June. My "check engine" light popped on a few days ago, so I asked them to look at that while they were reviewing the A/C work. They told me they would finish the review of my A/C at no charge, but I had to sign off on $100 fee to hook my car up to their computer to get the reading on the "check engine" sensor. You can do this for free at several local auto part stores, but since the $100 would apply toward any work I was having done that day, I figured I'd be spending it anyway. I went ahead and signed the paper. That is the last $100 bucks (plus tax!) I will be spending at this place. Two hours later, I received a text from N/A with a link to photos of my car and explanations of what needed to be repaired and why. There were four items listed in "URGENT" need of repair. They included: 1. the condenser for my AC-- which was leaking the freon they had put in in June. They included a photo of the phosphorescent die indicating where the leak was. 2. the heat shield on my catalytic converter. They even included a video of my car running that showed the heat shield rattling when my car idled. 3. the coolant temperature sensor. The failure of this sensor is what caused my "check engine" light to appear on my dash. A photo with a diagram of where the sensor was located was included on the analysis. 4. rear shocks replaced. photos were also included showing a dark area on the shock absorber was supposedly leaking oil. Not included in the analysis was an estimate for services. I called, and "M" quoted me the following: Heat shield: $60.00 Replacing rear shocks and alignment = $508 Coolant temperature sensor. Parts and labor = $330 Leaking condenser replaced. Parts and labor = $660 Total cost: $1,500.00 Here is why you should COME HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF: I asked "M" if the heat shield included a replacement part, and he said that the heat shield itself was fine, it had just come loose and was rattling. I said that the video showed that it had rusted almost completely off, and was he looking at the right car? He said he hadn't watched the video, and was giving me a price on simply reattaching a loose heat shield. He said that to replace the shield meant I'd need to replace the whole catalytic converter, and that wasn't worth it. I agreed, but said that $60 was pretty high for two $2 hose clamps. He said nothing. Then, I asked why my car needed an alignment, as it wasn't pulling left or right. He said that installing the rear shocks would then REQUIRE an alignment. This is simply NOT so! I had to wonder if he was lying to me because I am female? I am not an idiot. A quick check around town at competitors' prices for shocks and alignments showed that Northern Auto was giving me a price of twice the amount, for services that I didn't even need. As for the coolant temp sensor, I checked the price at a local auto part store. It was $38 bucks. I asked if the sensor was hard to get at or required a special tool to remove, as I couldn't understand why a $38 part on the top of the engine would need an additional $290 worth of labor. He said that HIS part cost $60, and he was sorry that I found one that cost half the price. He then said that the "labor" cost was not because there was a special tool or that it was hard to get to, it was because it involved turning off the "check engine" light and making sure nothing else was wrong. A check engine light will go off by itself after it stops receiving an error message. This does not cost $290, nor does it require special skills to hook the computer up to my car to see if there are additional problems. I asked if they would lower their estimate, and they told me that I must have been mistaken about the competitors' prices. I told them I would be back to pick up my car and I did not authorize any work. They told the to give them an hour because my car was currently up on the lift. A friend of mine drove me back to get my car. When I arrived, "M" was conveniently out of the building. I told "D" to let "M" know that I was very disappointed in my experience. "D" said that sometimes it costs up to $800 to replace a condenser. While that might be true, I had never even gotten to a point to discuss this with "M." He had effectively demonstrated that either he didn't know what he was talking about, or that he believed I was too dumb to know the difference. read more

I look my car in for a check engine light and a driver assist malfunction. I have been going to Northern for years and I felt that I would get a fair price for what seemed to be a scary repair. Rodney and the team there made the experience a good time start to finish. My repair was diagnosed within a few hours, the repairs completed within 3 days. I was concerned about getting there and back, but to my surprise they offered a free Uber ride back and forth. I highly recommend this place. read more

I really wanted to make this place my regular spot, but after two very bad experiences I will not be going back. Took my car there for 2 oil changes, and all was fine (price was a bit on the high side, but I figured the quality of work was worth it). Had an A/C issue this spring and took it to Northern for a quote. Ended up needing a new compressor, and they quoted me over $1200 for the part, labor, and a couple other small things. Felt that it was a pretty high estimate, ended up taking it elsewhere and getting a very quality job for under $700. Just a week ago, my car overheated and needed a new water pump. They quoted me $950 for a new pump, thermostat, and coolant flush. INCREDIBLE. I wanted to give them another chance, but was very disappointed. They offered to do just the water pump replacement and coolant top off for $500 - still a HUGE rip off. How on earth is a coolant flush and thermostat an extra $400?! Absolutely insane. Ended up taking it to the place that replaced by compressor, and they replaced the water pump, flushed my coolant, and changed my oil for under $400. This place is a huge cash grab. Please don't take your vehicle here. Save yourself the frustration and money. read more

I've been going to Northern Auto for a few years with my 2009 Hyundai Elantra (as this car ages, it needs more love) and they are fantastic!!! They are always honest, straight forward with their recommendations and are not trying to upsell services I don't need. They do not talk down to me as a woman and just explain what's going on with me directly. I'm a member of their car club, which I purchased and has some great perks (free oil changes, discounts on various services). Everyone that works there is super friendly! Also, they always vacuum my car and leave a cookie on the seat - how cute! read more

I've seen some raving reviews from customers of this shop. I guess my experience there must have been an anomaly because I almost got hosed. There was a slight noise coming from my driver side wheel on my Audi A3. I replaced a hub previously so I thought it must have been that or a bearing issue. When I stopped in there I made the mistake of telling them what I thought the problem might be. Low and behold after they did their so called "inspection", I was told it was indeed the hub and it would cost $900. After picking up my jaw from the floor I said thank you and walked out. Not only was the price outrageous as I had paid $400 at a Audi-specific shop for the same repair on a different wheel but as it turns out there was no issue with the hub at all! I was able to get an appointment at my normal shop and they told me there was zero issue with the hub/bearing but that my tire had some unusual wear due to a mis-alignment and that's what was causing the noise. So before you have these clowns look at your car, look elsewhere because they are more than likely fixing non existent issues. Took my vehicle in for diagnostic because the check engine light was on. the diagnostic came back in less than 2 hours along with a repair estimate. both documents came to me via text message with links to the documents. Very convenient. Never had to go into the shop or waiting room. The car was ready by 3 pm. I paid with a credit card over the phone. The keys and the receipt (along with a cloth to clean the dash and door handles) were in the vehicle and all I had to do was get in a drive away. The check engine light on my car came on. Thank goodness Northern was open. Was able to have the car checked out without face to face interaction.
