I went to Northern Spy with a big group for a business meeting a few months ago. The food was outstanding. I couldn't stop eating the salmon with crispy quinoa, apples and squash. I brought my family this time and the dish just wasn't the same. It was under seasoned and just had no flavor. The plate was dry and I didn't get any yummy brown butter. I wish it was better. We made dinner reservations for 5:30pm and requested a booth or table against the windows. All the booths were already taken when we arrived and the hostess sat us at what I felt was the best table that matched my request. We had indicated in our reservation that we were celebrating our Anniversary and our server brought us some complimentary bubbly wine when she greeted us. We ordered that clam chowder appetizer and an order of sourdough bread. The butter that came with the bread was salty and creamy and very good, but couldn't quite make the bread delicious as it was too dry and crusty. The clam chowder was very flavorful and creamy. The bacon in it was more predominant that any thing else from a flavor perspective, so it didn't much taste like clam chowder but it was good. My wife ordered the grilled shrimp risotto. I could tell she didn't like it with the first bite so I tried it as well. The shrimp had a smoked flavor which neither of us care for and the risotto had good texture but little flavor, we would have salted it, however, there wasn't any salt on the table. I ordered the Stout Braised Beef which was absolutley delicious. There were four large portions of meat on a bed of mashed potatoes and grilled peppers sitting in a delicious dark beef gravy. My wife took one bite and loved it, there was plenty of food on that plate for us to split and we couldn't even finish it all. The server asked if we liked everything and I was honest and told her that we loved the Braised Beef, but did not like the Shrimp Risotto at all. She asked if we wanted anything else and told her no. We were pleased that when she gave us the bill she removed the Shrimp Risotto entirely. Hubby and I celebrated Valentine's Day at Northern Spy tonight starter's were great we hubby had Mushroom risotto and added chicken to it (unfortunately the chicken was on the dry side) have to give it a 6.5 I had the beef tenderloin AMAZING gave that a 15 ! Dinner came with the dessert we went with the raspberry cheesecake (average) and the pear-cranberry crumble with vanilla ice cream it came out warm it was to die for!! We order the wings and beet salad for an appetizer and they did not disappoint. The wings were nice and Smokey with a very simple sauce that wasn't overbearing. The spatchcoked chicken was very moist, tender and flavorful. The haddock...simply delightful. Very light and flaky, perfect for summer. The grits were the only thing g I know I won't order again. Northern Spy is a recently opened addition to the Canton dining scene and is slated to become one of the premier eateries in town, especially once Covid-19 is behind us. Opened in a historical, brick building from 1801 which used to be the nation's first copper mill, Northern Spy's team worked to modernize everything. From the outside, it's gorgeous and I cannot wait to see the full potential it will have once diners are able to eat inside. My wife and I decide to get takeout there for Valentine's Day and while we didn't opt for their special menu, we decided to go à la carte so we could try a variety of things. We kicked things off with their smoked tomato & cheese flatbread ($16) and their parsnip & cheddar pierogis ($18). Both were delicious and the attentiveness to the presentation and garnishes was impressive. The smoked mushrooms and soldier beans atop the pierogis were a hit. We also opted for the Parker House rolls ($7) which were very brioche-y and came with as side of salted maple butter. For our main we split the Green Circle chicken ($28) which came with a delicious brown sauce composed of mushrooms and madeira. It came with a side of baked bread sauce which was rather unique but it paired nicely. If you're doing takeout and get this dish, make sure to eat it as soon as possible, it doesn't sit well (we found out the hard way once our toddler refused to go down to sleep *sigh*) For sides we also got the Housekeeper's Kohlrabi ($7) which comes in a brown butter sauce and some hazelnuts. Oh, and we had two cocktails to go as well, which were $11 a pop and were terrific. Seriously the cognac-based Champs-Élysées was so smooth and with great notes of Chartreuse, bitters and lemon juice. The Last Word was also a huge hit with gin and Maraschino cherry liqueur, bitters and citrus. All in all, this hidden gem is off the beaten path, in the midst of an area which is undergoing a lot of development but is setup to really well and it will have no problem quickly establishing itself as Canton's top eatery. The menu is diverse, creative and does a great job showcasing a piece of history and the local ingredients and traditions... with a modern twist. It was lovely and the staff was very friendly and helpful during pickup, which was a breeze. The prices are a tad high overall but the amount of work and care they put into what they dish out makes it well worth it. Went back again. The drinks were as usual really good but I think I'm cursed with the food here. I got the baked scrod which was very mild and honestly just bland. So changed it up to the hot fish sandwich which was dry and so fried, I could barely taste the fish. My husband's sirloin was good. And the server was wonderful - the manager also came in and checked when I didn't like my meal which I really appreciate. Just didn't have the heart to tell them my second meal was disappointing too. So to summarize, lovely service/people, great drinks but be careful of the food you order. It's hit or miss. read more

I don't know what happened to this restaurant. It used to be good. It sort of has been on a slow decline. Now has hit rock bottom. First of all, don't serve octopus if you can't execute octopus. Tonight I got the octopus and it was as tough as leather. Terrible. My wife got the duck breast. The fat was fat. The "chef" did not render it at all. One of my sons got the burger. He hated it. Incredibly salty. My other son ate it for him because he eats everything. He got the tenderloin. Flavorless. We'll probably never go back unless there are drastic changes. We've been going there for years and enjoyed many good meals there. But our last few visits have been very disappointing and this one was the nail in the coffin for us. Service was good but didn't make up for a failed dinner for 4. Not sure how to rate since service and drinks were good. I'll go with 2 stars to be reasonable. This is a cool building and it has a second story, which I think was a museum at one point, but kind of run down now. The food was really good although a little pricey I know that because I paid the bill for the four of us. I didn't really like the drink I ordered and they switched it with no problem so that was kind of nice. The server was super nice as well. We used to go to Northern Spy a lot, but both the food and the service have declined significantly. Prices are still high though. The bartender was so slow, we had to ask for our drinks several times. There was only one other person at the bar, so no excuses. Food was below average. ABSURDLY OVERPRICED! I ordered the $15. Arugula, Beets and Goat Cheese Salad, smiled at the waitress and said, "I love goat cheese!" She smiled and nodded. When it arrived, it had a big handful of dry arugula leaves covering everything. I asked "why no goat cheese?", and was told, "it's underneath." I pushed all the dry leaves over and there was a TEASPOON of goat cheese in the middle! I flagged the waitress back and asked her for some dressing, and I GOT CHARGED FOR IT!! The $7 Roasted Brussels Sprouts side, which I requested to be crispy on the outside, were way undercooked and hard! It's like they intentionally do the opposite of any request! Our first visit to Northern Spy did not disappoint. Located in Canton MA a short walk from the town center. The outdoor dining space is wonderful! They have recently opened to indoor dining and we ate inside as courtyard was booked. The food was delicious. We enjoyed the Smoked Bluefish Pâté and the Burrata & Roasted Broccoli. Then we ordered Sirloin Tips (Worcestershire, grilled scallions & fries) The wood fired cooking was outstanding! These selections were plenty of food. Great flavors and presentation. Since they have recently opened, their wait staff is young, without much experience. Having said that the staff was professional, cordial and very pleasant. (They are still working out the inside 'vibe' and flow. The lounge are is lovely and large. Bar seating not yet opened.) Now for the cocktails. WOW! This list is as good or better than any cocktail list in NYC, Chicago, Boston or L.A. (yes I have tested those places too) My companion and I sampled: The Sword Master Don't Sink the Ship Jalisco Reviver These three were consumed with great delight! The cocktail master, John, who made the cocktail menu, has hit a homerun. Well Done! It was 2 PM, and they weren't serving proper meals...just breakfast fare and sandwiches. I had a cheeseburger, and the meat tasted like it was going bad. 6 people eating rotten sandwiches and some drinks cost over $400. I could have a better meal at McDonalds. The wait staff was nice but the bar was slow. I've been here before and the food was better. Someone else noticed that the quality was declining. I agree. There are much better restaurants in Canton with better food and lower prices. Say "No thanks" to Northern Spy. read more

Second visit-the atmosphere is very cool and outdoor patio is lovely. The food is fresh & well prepared the portions are very small side- even salads are tiny. Pan seared Gnocchi - delicious! Ricotta cavatelli with lobster ??..- very little lobster (1-piece in entire entree) Service was great!! It's Time to jump into The TimeMobile & scour the Earth & take you to places from a different time that you won't believe still exist. We have set the dial to the year 1800 to a town that is located about a 1/2 an hour or so outside of Boston in Canton MA. We have landed at this beautiful old brick historic building. This is Paul Revere's original copper mill. Yes that Paul Revere of the Midnight Ride who journeyed from Boston on horseback to the town of Lexington during the Revolutionary War. Paul Revere was also a member of the Sons of Liberty who spied on the British soldiers. Although he is most known for that event, he was also an accomplished silversmith. After America became an independent nation Paul Revere set up the first copper mill in the United States. Business boomed in Canton which had access to a great water supply. Paul Revere's factory produced copper sheathing for the USS Constitution, the State House dome, and eventually, forged cannons for the Union side during the Civil War. Paul Revere's descendants owned the property until the early 1900's. Plymouth Rubber then purchased the land & manufactured various rubber products including tape, gas masks & inner soles for shoes for the troops. Then in 2015 began the Giant renovation project from clearing out of the land to taking down of some old buildings. They decided to redevelop the site & call it The Paul Revere Heritage Site which includes 9 acres of parkland. The Paul Revere Heritage Park is Free & opened in 2020. It is surrounded by new apartments and condominiums. Revere's brick copper rolling mill has been transformed into a new restaurant called Northern Spy. Northern Spy is the perfect name for this converted space because remember Paul Revere spied on The British. The Food we found was a Mixed Bag. The Scallops were just OK. The Burgers were good. Definitely worth another try & will get something different next time. But the physical place is Fantastic There is a nice rustic ambience inside but the outdoor patio space really shines. We enjoyed the outdoor dining & seeing the whole building & antique pieces from a bygone era. The staff is very friendly & accommodating too. This would also be a great place to come for cocktails. They are open for Lunch, Dinner & Weekend Brunch. It was such an enjoyable experience combining History with something to eat. Afterwards we journeyed over next door to the Free park with green grass & trees. We walked all around & relaxed a bit & looked at the plaques & learned some more detailed info about this historic site & City. And you should do the same. We first order drinks Deb ordered a Cosmo, I ordered a Manhattan. She had very little alcohol in hers. Mine didn't come out at all like I ordered it. The help is acting upper scale but their actions reflect otherwise. A person, not our waiter, well dressed showed up with Deb's second drink which was very good but the "person" asked if I was done with my drink, I said yes waiting for him to ask what I wanted next. Instead he's took it and walked away very comfortable that he accomplished his task...lol WTF? Our courses arrived. Oddly enough the Fries which weren't conventional where the best part of my dinner. My tips where chewy and the sauce was way over powering. Second round delivered exactly how I didn't order it the first time, after pointing it out to our waiter before I ordered the second...too funny. I'm conflicted writing this because I feel this place has extreme potential but, they need to figure out what/who they are. The restaurant is beautiful, very much upscale farm house vibe. I know how conflicting that statement is. Because I feel you can either be a cozy community restaurant or a high end eatery. But can you be both ?? I've worked in restaurants all my life so I'm trying to come from a place of positivity. Brunch/ lunch is amazing here and highly recommend visiting then but, dinner is a much different story. Wait staff have no real uniform. Is that an issue ? Maybe not and could be more of a personal pet peeve but, when trying to be upper scale you think everyone would wear similar outfits. That being said the waitstaff are extremely friendly. Also circles back to the question what is this restaurant trying to be. For dinner this evening we started with the Spicy Artichoke Fritters. They were lackluster and similar to a Falafel with way too much pepper. Spicy and over peppered are two different things. For our mains I asked if it was possible to have their chicken sandwich from their lunch menu and that was a no. Which is a little silly since they offer a cheeseburger for dinner. I settled for a special the Spinach,Goat cheese and Walnut flatbread and my husband pan seared gnocchi. The app came out fast but dinner was another story. The phantom gourmet was filming an episode so perhaps our meal was taking more time because those plates took precedent. When our meal finally arrived I was little taken back. Extremely small portions for the price and lack of taste. Am I saying it wasn't good no but, it really wasn't amazing either. Both dishes lacked flavor and very underwhelming. I shouldn't still feel hungry after an hour and half dinner and $100 bill. So, in conclusion I think this place is amazing for brunch/lunch just skip dinner at least for now. read more

We had a reservation for my birthday dinner on 4/26/25 at 5:30 pm, before it got too busy, and there were plenty of empty tables. We had the worst table in the place. Right across from the hostess stand, where people waiting for a table watch you eat. The waitress brought us drinks (almost 10 minutes for a Jack on the rocks and a glass of house wine), took our orders, and didn't appear until after we finished our meals. My meal was baked scrod and fine. Not great, but fine. My boyfriend had the sirloin special for $51, and it was chewy, fatty, and cold. His au gratin potatoes were swimming in butter and cold. A random person delivered the meals, and the waitress was still nowhere to be found. We were not offered a second drink or asked if our meals were ok. We would have sent the sirloin back at that point. By the time she returned, we were already disenchanted with the entire experience. We came to the restaurant because of my love of history and was taken in by the story of Paul Revere. Do not fall for it. The food is not worth the price. No salt and pepper or spoons to stir the cream in the coffee and the waitress wasn't around to ask. The brioche French toast was good. The eggs Benedict which I asked for light sauce wasn't great. We had heard and read extremely positive reviews on Northern Spy so my wife and I along with another couple decided to try this restaurant. We were extremely disappointed in every aspect from the service to the food. The only positive I can mention is that we were seated at 7:15 with a 7:15 reservation. We waited consistently for our dinner drinks, appetizers, main course and bill to leave. My wife's risotto dish was bland and lacked any flavor. My main course meal was not what I had expected and even the chef who came out to ask me how I liked the squash lasagna said it is an acquired taste. Such a hidden gem in the 'burbs. We went for date night and sat outside in the patio. The waiter was one of the best servers we ever had- so attentive and helpful. Husband got a "New England old fashioned" and he loved it. We then started with the burrata which was perfect for a summer evening. For food, I had the braised beef flatbread, so delicious. He had the steak tips, which were cooked perfectly. Left with smiles on our face and happy bellies. Will be back again! read more

Wings were bad. Shrimp cocktail was bad. Seriously, you should be embarrassed Northern Spy. Do you have a trained cook or chef? If so, they need to be replaced. The wings were dropped in a fryer, and so dried out you couldn't bite into them. They were not seasoned, just some awful sauce on the side. And the shrimp cocktail seemed like it may have been picked up at a low end supermarket clearance aisle... seemed like it was low quality precooked frozen shrimp that u barely let thaw and threw it on a dish. It was translucent and flimsy - gross. The Bloody Mary cocktail sauce was absolutely gross. Service was slow and below average in general (they weren't busy). I arranged a family Sunday brunch for 15 people. The ambiance is great as was the service. The menu is interesting as well. The food was good, not great. Our group probably tried a bit of everything on the menu and while no one raved, no one was super disappointed. We had a great time and the staff did everything they could to serve our group.
