Better Than Expected We were looking for a new place to try, and although this restaurant is anything but new, it was a good find for us. We tried two appetizers - the buffalo chips and calamari. The chips were thinly cut potatoes with a slightly spicy seasoning (very slightly!) and served with bleu cheese dressing for dipping. So good! I really loved the calamari. They were not rubbery, and not over-fried. A perfect crunch and a perfect marinara dipping sauce. I'm very picky with sauce out of the home, and this was really good. It wasn't too sweet, and was not over-seasoned at all. Wife ordered the fried scallops which came with french fries and cole slaw. The scallops were delicious, and a very good portion for $21; I ate almost half of it. I ordered the fried haddock and mashed potatoes (real). The haddock was not oily or greasy at all, had a nice light coating on it, and she enjoyed it. Only negative in the food was the french fries, as there was just no flavor to them at all. Next time, I will get the mashed instead. Our server had a great personality and was very attentive! The restaurant is really in the middle of a residential area, but I'm glad we found this place. The Colonial House is located in a residential neighborhood but don't be put off by the location. It's part of the charm. It's has a small bar with a couple a tables on either side of a fireplace before you enter the main dining room. Get there early as it can be a wait. The menu is as varied as it is delicious. It has great Italian options and Seafood. I love their Pizza and a Salad myself. Let me just say I'm not a meat eater so I can't comment.... I just don't like it but my friends love it when they have ordered. The prices are on par with all the other restaurants in our area, Metro West so definitely check it out. Friendly, casual family-style restaurant. Wife enjoyed the baked stuffed haddock which was pipping hot and flaky, but her mashed potatoes were dry/crusty and butternut squash were not great. I had steak tips, fries and asparagus. The fries were bland shoe string fries and the asparagus did not look appetizing at all and I did not touch. The steak tips were fine I got med/rare and were cooked correctly but for $25 I got like 3oz of steak (6 chunks). The party next to us got onion rings and some loaded tater tots appetizer which both looked better (I would opt for onion rings instead of fries). There is parking in the back lot in the back (use google maps satellite view to see it you cannot see it from street view). Our waitress was friendly. Root beer is from a glass bottle and was not mentioned when ordering. I wish staff would mention this when ordering I usually ask but forgot this time. I kept looking at the Colonial House every time we went to a Patriots game and stayed in the Canton/Norwood area and we finally tried it. It is super cute. When you are driving there you think you have the wrong address because it's literally in a colonial neighborhood. The food is delicious and the menu has good variety. The free bread was delicious and piping hot. I was surprised at how good the lobster bisque was and they said they made it in-house. Portions were gigantic! We couldn't finish everything and I didn't get dessert which almost never happens. Seating was colonial and very uncomfortable in the old timey booth so maybe get a table if you are big and/or tall. Park on the street or in the back behind the house. I used Waze to get there and it was accurate. read more

This is a family restaurant with a friendly atmosphere and good food. I had the fish and chips which was very crispy and hot when it arrived. Desserts are enormous! The service is friendly and depending on the time of day may be slower than other restaurants. It seemed that many of the customers were regulars that knew each other. Got shrimp scampi- which was more like plain spaghetti noodles with some shrimp on top.ZERO flavor. No wine,garlic or lemon flavor...at all. Maybe they forgot the scampi sauce?! Asked for Fettuccini Alfredo & asked to add chicken & broccoli. Well for some reason that's not an option?! They told me I couldnt add chicken & broccoli!? (And I was served Ziti) because apparently they don't have fettuccine, but neglected to let me know that. For $20+ a plate I definitely expected better. This review is in response to the 10/31 false rant by Shuga. I was the " friend" who had dinner with her and found the staff and management delightful. Shuga was offended that she had to pay for soda water which is a common practice . The total cost of one glass was under $3 and she decided to cause a scene. I was mortified when she left me to pay the tab. The manager gave me a gift certificate to come back and could not have been nicer after her inappropriate outburst. At no time did I find anything in this interaction racist. I brought my mother back recently and thanked the manager for being so nice and understanding that night. I gladly footed the bill for my mother the second time around and will come back as the food is great, staff and management are delightful and it has a cute atmosphere. Worst food I ever had. I haven't tried prison food but I would imagine it being similar. Frozen food, packaged.... maybe microwaved ..::??? All I can say is at least the waitress was pleasant. I got marinated steak tips (chewy small bite size pieces, bland) mashed potatoes (I'm pretty sure they were real) not terrible but the chicken parm.... disgusting, sauce, disgusting..:: fried zucchini sticks - disgusting.... MINORITIES ARE NOT WELCOME!!! Proceed with caution. My girlfriend (caucasian) and I (minority) went here for the first time for dinner. Just happened to yelp some taverns in the neighborhood and thought to check it out. Well let me tell you, it was a NIGHT FROM HELL!!! Where do I begin. So we arrived around 7:45ish where we were never greated appropriately by the waitress! There were two older women who were waitressing and seemed to be uninterested in catering to us. Instead, one of them just gave us a dirty look from afar thru a bar mirror which is in the waiting area who ended up being our actual waitress. When we got sat, she never introduced herself and went right into asking "are you ladies ready to order"? Service was decent, although not for nothing I'm use to going to places where the waitress or waiter checks in atleast once to see how things are going at the table after the food arrives. Well I assure you, we were never asked and as many times she passed the table it seemed she would've rather we just eat, pay and skedaddle. So after our meal, she then took our plates without ever asking us if we wanted dessert or anything else. Then proceeded to ask if we were ready for the bill. I was applauded. At that point, I just wanted to pay and get the hell up out of there and forget the whole night. Being a waitress myself, I was in total disgust given the type of service we received in addition to how they conduct business. So the bill arrives, and for 2 meals, 3 glasses of wine and 2 soda waters later. Our bill totalled to $82. Yes, you heard me. Not to mention we were being charged for "seltzer water" aka Soda water $2.90 each w/free refills. I've eaten in many restaurants in the past from five stars to 2 stars where Pellingrino or Pierre bottled water would typically come with a cost, rightfully so.. As to my surprise, most places DO NOT CONSIDER it a fountain drink.esp when there is no "syrup" mix such as one would use for sodas. When I asked to speak to a manager, she came back with a gentleman who had on flip flops, jogging pants and a polo flipped collar shirt. I thought she was kidding. I even asked him if he was in fact the manager because of his appearance. Sadly, he was! I explained to him it was our first visit there had heard great reviews about the food and thought to come check it out. However, I was disappointed to discover "soda water" wasn't free. So I asked if it would it be possible to have it taken off our bill because we weren't aware there was a charge and we barley drunk them due to our wines. Well let me tell you, not only did he seem annoyed at my request he hands down not only refused but continued to say well "it's on the menu". In fact what the menu states is all "fountain drinks came with free refills" but soda water was not indicated as one. He continued on saying "sorry but the water is a fountain drink, so what do you want me to do"! I was shocked that he was not only reluctant to take off a total of $5.90 on a $82 bill but he seemed upset that I had the audacity to ask for it to be taken off our bill. Then once I responded to what happened to "making sure to take care of the customer and making sure it's a pleasant experience policy " his response was "so now you want me to comp the whole bill"! I assured him I was more than capable of paying my bill and did not want to make a scene. Although, I did not appreciate how he was handling the matter nor did I appreciate his tone of voice. The next words that came out of his mouth I swear to you, was "I expected you to be the one to say something about your bill"! If that wasn't pure racism or discrimination, I don't know what would have warranted such comment. At that point, my girlfriend saw my face and insisted on picking up the tab due to pure embarrassment. I was so angry, I told him I would NEVER COME BACK THERE and be sure to let everyone know what type of establishment they were running. I have been coming to this restaurant since I was a kid. I would go with my parents and my grandparents and have had some good memories. It is always such a great experience, the wait staff is great. Rita is a family favorite and always love seeing her when we come. The food is always delicious. Best onion rings, fried or baked seafood and specials are always good. Traveling often for work , discovering local gems is my thing. Ambiance was on point. Smack dab in the middle of a residential neighborhood, quite sure I was going to walk into a fully furnished house and be joining the dining room table. People greeted each other left and right, the place was packed on a Monday night, and I even watch a pay it forward scheme of paying for dinners. Alas, the three stars. Based on my servers inability to actually listen or be situationally aware of much, my experience was closer to that dreaded 1 star. Albeit through a twang of jealousy, I gave three based on the experiences I witnessed around me. To justify my three stars: 1. Sticking out like a sore thumb , clearly uncomfortable in a dining area everyone knew each other I was making "help me eyes" at a server who met my gaze four times. The fourth inquiring if I had been helped , proceeded to tell me she needed two seconds (that turned in 8 excoriating minutes) before she could help me. 2. After telling the server twice that I'd be dining solo ... I was still sat with two menus, dining setups and was also brought two waters. Thanks for making it look like I got stood up by a date ... 3. When asking if the scallops and clams were fried, and being told no... I was excited to order them with a baked potato and green beans. To my dismay I received fried scallops, clams, French fries and coleslaw. As I'm not a fan of fried seafood , I shoved down a couple scallops and called it quits. 4. Instead of asking how everything was , I was asked if I was still picking (at my very full plate) or if she could take the plate out of my way. The bonus was that this place is family owned - the owner Jeanie, who is both combative and surly (inside joke for my fellow Netflix connoisseur), happened to be working and made me feel like I was a guest in her home. This place is so cute! We came here for date night and it was great. Our waitress (Rita) was very nice and personable. Rolls - my boyfriend's biggest pet peeve is cold butter with room temperature bread. These rolls were warm and the butter was creamy and spreadable. Buffalo chicken - at first we thought it was going to be dry, but not at all! It was crunchy and juicy with a good amount of spice. Prime rib w/ mashed potatoes - huge portion of meat! It was very tender and the au jus had the right amount of saltiness. The potato portion was small and my boyfriend wished they were creamier and not so bland. Meatball sandwich w/ fries - yummy! The meatballs were seasoned well and delicious! The bread was perfectly toasted and held up well with the sauce. The fries were nice and crispy. We'll definitely be going back! read more

Found this place randomly via Yelp and went there with the girlfriend randomly for dinner on a nice but brisk late Autumn evening. Upon arriving at what seemed to be a barn, driving closer, it was in fact a... you guessed it... old colonial house which has since been converted into a restaurant and bar. The atmosphere there is unlike anything I've experienced but represents New England; it's absolutely authentic and spot on. From the little stove in the dining room to the tiny bathroom featuring old pluming and all of the wooden seats that creak with when you sit down. We totally and immediately felt like we time traveled and that my friends is awesome. Unfortunately though, despite the affordable menu and friendly service, the food was rather dissapointing. The spinach dip was average at best, being served with some near stale chips. The girlfriend didn't like her entree (I can't quite recall what she had) but my plate of spaghetti with meatballs surprisingly decent and the portion was more than generous. As far as drinks go, they nailed her cosmo and my beer was cold - both were decently priced which was great. All in all, the place, while full of locals, makes for a very unique setting to eat or drink at - it has its charm and we thought it was a neat spot. The food could have been better but the ambiance and the service made up for it. And while those booths weren't as comfortable as one would expect, the authenticity was something that I enjoyed and it made for a fun night out. read more

Stopped in here after work on a Thursday (about 6pm). The bar was full but all tables were empty. I sat in the back corner booth. Place is small and absolutely adorable. I'm originally from PA and this place reminded me of home, so much!! I had ordered the bourbon steak tips, rice pilaf and butternut squash. It was good! The butternut squash was not what I was expecting, however it was so yummy, reminded me of candied sweet potatoes. The service was very good. The place felt very homey!! The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because, when I walked into the front entrance, I was hit with a strong urine smell. With the kitchen entrance at the top of the steps and the men's bathroom to the left of it, the two smells I'm sure clashed. Other than this... place was perfect!! We walked in and the staff all just looked at us for a while to figure out who would seat us. Eventually someone begrudgingly came over to seat us. Booths are uncomfortable. Service is slow. Rolls are all raw on one side and burnt on the other. The menu has Caesar salad on it but they don't have Caesar dressing (so not really Caesar salad). Side salads have an upcharge for a bit of iceberg lettuce, 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 olives and 2 onion slices. We were there for at least 45 minutes before our food arrived (tables were about 65-70% full at this time and it was after 8pm). Green beans were clearly from a can, discolored, and completely inedible. Meat and fish were alright. Plus 2 entrees and 2 sodas cost $45. Came here because of the other reviews and was excited but was ultimately very disappointed. read more

A Hidden Gem I'm almost reluctant to write this review because I don't want to see this place get too popular. Long story short, we walked out of there without having been seated. So now it's 9:00, and we're hungry as all get out. A friend had told me about this place called "The Colonial" that was in a residential neighborhood, and that you'd never find if you weren't looking for it. So on a whim, we called them. The person I talked to said the kitchen would still be open when we got there, so we went. My friend was not wrong. If I hadn't been looking for this place, I never would have found it, and I love that. I love these little out of the way places that are real neighborhood joints, and haven't gone crazy with marketing and branding and all that corporate stuff that restaurants are supposed to do if they want to make money. I had calamari and a cup of chowda (note for non-Bostonians: "chowda" is the correct spelling.). The calamari was nice and crispy, and the squid was not at all rubbery or anything. The chowda? I've had better, but honestly, after the Del Frisco's fiasco, it was really, really satisfying. The GF had mahi-mahi, which looked good, and judging by the way she snarfed it down, couldn't have been too bad. But what really made this place feel so good last night was the service. It was everything that Del Frisco's wasn't. Our waitress was a very sweet woman who chatted warmly with us, and the food was out fairly quickly, despite the fact that the kitchen must have been starting to close down. Best part? It's about a mile from our house. So, I don't know how to rate the food, really. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't being super critical. It was warm, it tasted good, and it got my blood sugar out of the "hangry" zone. If I go there under different circumstances would my opinion change? I don't know. Maybe. But I'm giving them four stars because regardless of whatever flaws the place may have, last night, they were our savior and refuge. After the corporate shenanigans at Del Frisco's, it was like coming home to mom's. I will definitely be back. Hopefully my opinion won't change. But for now, I'm a fan. read more

Two stars because the person with my said their meal was pretty good. Mine. Not so much. We ordered and then waited forever. Definitely forgot to cook my dates meal When the food finally came it was easy to tell they had just made my dates and mine had been sitting forever. It was cold. Not warm. Cold. They took it back where they proceeded to way over microwave it to heat it up. It was over cooked and had no flavor. All the juices were drained out of it. Classic over microwaving situation. This is, by far, the best atmosphere in Norwood. It is hard to find and often packed, getting their business solely by word of mouth. Their food is fantastic and CHEAP (best French Dip EVER)... and is the booze, which flows in good 'ole pub fashion. The wait staff is friendly and rarely slow. There is nothing worse than paying for a meal that leaves you disappointed and dissatisfied. That's exactly what happened last night at my dining experience here. We arrived shortly after they opened (5pm) so was far from busy but for some unknown reason our waitress took forever to greet us? Service was consistently terrible throughout the meal, I guess more than two tables is a bit much for her. Also, if you're in a customer service position might want to figure out how to put a fake smile on! Both dinners were to come over roasted vegetables but sautéed vegetables arrived. My wife's dinner was to come with potato or pasta side, she was never asked and we never had a chance to say something as waitress came over dropped our plates off then we never saw her again until we finished. My wife's steak tips were ok but everything else was average at best, I would equate this meal to a chain restaurant level. We passed a domino's Pizza and joked that we could've had a better meal there for 1/2 the price we paid at Olde Colonial. I usually have good luck with yelp reviews and maybe we ordered the wrong things but dinner was so disappointing that we'd never return. read more

We've lived in Norwood for 5 years and had never seen nor heard about this place (and it's only a 1/2 mile away from us!). We're homebodies, so we like to stay local when we go out. Conrad's, Napper Tandy, The 99 and British Beer Co. are all getting "old", so we needed to find something different. Thanks for the original review on Yelp, Dawn. :-) We got down there about 6:30 on Saturday, and as expected, it was packed. We waited about 10 minutes and were offered a small table in the bar to eat, or we could've waited for a more formal dining booth. We chose to eat in the bar. Pretty standard menu with a few Italian specialties. We started w/ the Appetizer combo on the Specials menu - Mozz sticks, fried mushrooms and "wings". Unfortunately, "wings" does not mean buffalo wings, but just plain ol' deep-fried "wing-dings". But they were good nonetheless. We stayed w/ the specials and ordered the baked lasagna and the steak tips. The lasagna was delicious and had a very good marinara sauce. The tips were cooked med-rare as requested, but could've been tastier & more tender (I guess I'm spoiled by the tips at the Nines and at Conrad's). The tips came with a side of rice and a veggie. Probably could've used more rice, as there was at least a 1/2 pound of tips. Overall, it was a nice new place to visit. We loved the homey atmosphere, and although we're not townies, we can now say we eat w/ the townies. read more

Great atmosphere. Dark lighting made even darker with the dark wood of the walls and furniture. I went here with my family for my birthday. It was not my first choice but it was not a bad one. We were confused when we came in as there was no seating instructions or greeter, but we made our way to the dining area and was told to head on into the back. I got a draft Budweiser which was fresh and an order of onion rings for the group. They were homemade and tasty and plentiful. For an entree I ordered one of the specials, bourbon turkey tips. They came on a bed of rice pilaf and coleslaw. The rice was regular rice pilaf nothing special. The coleslaw was good. I even ate my sisters coleslaw as does not like it. The turkey tips were very good. I wish there was more sauce so I could have spiced up the rice a bit, but no. I could see myself here again for a pint and some food. read more
