We have used NW Arbor Culture for nearly 20 years and have always found them to be prompt and professional. They do great work and leave the site clean when they're done. We recently had them out again to deal with a wild cherry that was falling over, threatening to destroy an outbuilding, in part because of a nasty Cecil Brunner rose bush growing up the tree. The whole problem was resolved in less than two days. VIs a vis some recent reviews, we've spoken to John Nash many times over the years and always found him to be friendly, open and polite, and the price we pay has always been fair. BUYER BEWARE! Our experience was shockingly bad. Jonathan Nash was short tempered with us and used F-bombs, expletives and personal insults when we simply called to ask about the progress of our job. I was caught off guard. It was such a rapid escalation of a simple follow up call. Who does that?! We found the lack of professionalism to be absolutely astounding. By contrast, and to be fair, the workers themselves were kind and professional. Despite Chris Nash being highlighted on the website, the son, Jonathan Nash said he purchased the business recently, and NW Arbor-Culture is no longer owned by his father Chris (who, as I understand, had a wonderful hard earned reputation over 20+ years for quality and integrity). Sent a request via their website and received a call within a day from John leaving a message and his number. I called back twice over the following week and no return call back from him. I called back again this morning, Monday, letting the weekend go by. This is a new house for us and we have been extremely busy and I didn't want to call on a Sunday. I used the number on my smartphone connected to his voice message and he answered his phone (almost 9 AM) like it's his personal phone (Hello) and so I asked for John. He wanted to know who I was so I told him my name and the nature of my call related to the tree consult and he hung up on me. Called the main line to the business, no answer. Not sure what is going on but the follow up has been poor and the handling this morning of my call was rude and unprofessional. Will be calling someone else. read more

Avoid these disorganized bullies at all costs. I spoke with Chris over the phone about a consultation at my property. He said it'd be a $150 fee. He sent a contract for me to sign which specified "Consultation and Arborist's Reports at the rate of $150/hour." I reiterated in an email that I wanted him to come out to give me a consultation and reminded him of the previously discussed $150 consultation fee. We had both a verbal and written expectation that his visit to my property would cost $150. He came over and was at my property for maybe 20 minutes. I told him I would not require an Arborist Report now that I had gotten his consultation. I later received an invoice for $450. When I wrote back to let them know that they had made a mistake, (they even messed up the date on the contract) I was told that I was being charged for Chris's commute time to and from my property, as well as for an Arborist Report. I never even received an Arborist Report! So he is literally billing me for a $150 Consultation and $300 for his 2.6 mile commute to my house. When I wrote back and told them I never ordered or received and Arborist Report, I was told that he had begun working on it while still at my property - which means that even if he did work on something I never ordered, he did it while still at my house, and well within a single hour. Now, if they charge $150/hr and he was at my property for less than half of that, the work he did while he was here, in error or otherwise, should not incur additional hourly charges beyond $150, per their own contract. I responded telling them I'm happy to pay the $150 as agreed upon in writing on their contract, but that I will not be charged for his commute of 2.6 miles or for a report I never ordered or received. They have again sent me the same $450 invoice, threatening to charge interest for the payment being overdue. read more

We hired Northwest Arbor to remove a badly misshapen oak tree behind our back fence, and replace it with one I purchased. I had discussed this about three years earlier with Jon, who seems to be the owner, and then had him over again early this year to set up the work. At this time, he said that, unlike earlier, the City of Newberg is very strict about such things and requires a permit, which I'd have to pay for. I chose to do this in person. Jon instructed me several times not to say too much to them, as he knew I was unhappy with the species of oak I was replacing, and "just say [I] want to replace an oak." I had no intention of perpetrating a fraud on the city and did ask them what species I may be permitted to replant. When I went to the city office for the permit, they were efficient and helpful, and gave me an illustrated handout showing the extensive requirements for replanting a tree on the area next to their sidewalk or other hardscaping. The handout indicated I must install a root barrier all around the tree, install two perforated pipes filled with pea gravel (for watering), set up two supports, provide a prescribed mix of native and amended soil, each feature at a specified distance and depth, and to leave the hole and tree unburied until the work passes their inspection. Jon, of course, was aware of this, since 1) he warned me, 2) his is a Newberg business, and 3) in his last email to me, he indicated clearly that he usually obtains the permit from the city for customers, so he would have received all this. The day of the job, two men showed up with tools and stump grinder. They did an impressive job of removing the existing tree and cleaned up nicely. When I then saw the tree being moved over, I ran out to stop them from planting it. I asked, "where are the root barrier, supports, and everything?" They said, "Jon is at Home Depot getting that and he'll be here any time." So I went back into the house. After an hour, I went out back again and found the tree planted in a tight hole in hard clay: no root barrier, no supports, no watering, no amended soil, not one city requirement met. When I called Jon to ask about this, he said I was "misinformed", and that the contract (signed only by him, and specifying no detail) did not include those procedures. In the ensuing email exchange, Jon would not negotiate an adjustment to the bill ($1,100), but became very threatening as to legal action he would take, collection agencies and the like. I paid on time and in full, and went to the City of Newberg, where I reported the situation. Since then, the tree has died (another $129), despite daily watering (hard clay is not a good place to be in the summer). When I pulled the tree out, I could see that its root ball had not been loosened to facilitate spreading (nor would it have fit into the tight pot they dug had they done so). Jon had assured me that he was a certified Arborist, and I have no reason to disbelieve him. But his behavior here was such that I would never trust him for the subsequent work I have planned, and would urge all homeowners to avoid Northwest Arbor, especially if a tree planting is within six feet of a road or sidewalk, since I believe you would be liable for repairs if the roots lift up that hardscaping. read more

Received bid for $9000 while 3 other bids were $2000. Worrisome was their strong recommendation to completely remove trees due to 'fungus' and danger of failing. The other arborists pointed out the fungus was not pathological and the trees were in no danger of failing. All competing arborists recommended more selective trimming. Perhaps this company operates from a combination of poor knowledge and bad judgment. read more

Jon and Chris Nash of Northwest Arbor-Culture are people of tremendous integrity, and total pros in the tree business. Not only will they care for your existing trees, they install beautiful landscaping of all types. We recently bought a house on a half acre in Tigard. Northwest Arbor-Culture put in a long privacy wall of arborvitae for us, as well as several Leyland Cypress, and they cleaned up all of the dead wood and crossing branches on several very large trees. The difference is incredible. The big trees have a beautiful shape now, and in a couple of years we'll have a dense green wall along the back of our lot, with the healthy arborvitae they put in. (They didn't put them too close together, so there's a little gap now, but that's how to keep them healthy.) This investment in our landscaping is good not only for us, but for the resale value of our house. I think using landscaping to create privacy and "rooms" in your yard is one of the best investments you can make in a house, for now and for later! As new members of the community, we were almost clueless about the type of tree dominating our soon-to-be backyard (an Oregon White Oak, as Jon informed me). If i could give negative stars, I would! Our experience with Northwest Arbor-Culture was the absolute WORST experience we've ever had with any contractor, bar-none. We agreed to a course of action on a couple big cedars in our yard which they did NOT follow making a few cuts to our trees that we, upfront, told them we did not want done. Over the course of over a year, they refused to return any of my many phone calls or emails to try and come to a resolution on the matter. When I finally received a call back from Jon Nash **over a year later** he immediately started in with the insults by accusing me of trying to be a "tough guy" and a "deadbeat" before stating he was recording the call and would sue me?? What? It had me scratching my head for sure. I had been calling and emailing this company to try and get resolution for over a year at that point and I AM the deadbeat?? Please. We ultimately had to settle in small claims court. Huge waste of time and HORRIBLE customer service. You'll notice no issues if they complete the job the right way via the posted positive reviews but check the other negative review on how the owners "handle" an issue. A true gauge of a company is how they handle a dispute and Northwest Arbor fails miserably in that regard. There is definitely no established customer service or follow-up protocol in place here. Your crew arrived a week ago Thursday as promised as 7:30am - 3 guys took down a 70' pine, roped down the limbs to save our rose bushes 7' away. I booked an appointment a week out per Johns availability, sadly there was no call to confirm our appointment a day or two out .. i recieved a call/messsage that day that he realized he missed the appointment , when i called him back we arranged for him to meet at my house the next day at 0930 .. again a no call /no show. The reviews here are so positive its disappointing to me my experience with his business is very poor. As our economy is reving back up i find this happens more and more. Small jobs are just not the priority they were and returning calls and keeping appointments no longer the difference between starving and eating. read more

Clean-up was thorough. I had a great and in-depth discussion with Jonathan regarding trees and tree care. Having been a member of the Portland Urban Forestry Commission, I was confident that Jonathan Nash is a very skilled and knowledgeable arborist. However, several issues include the following: Jonathan did not arrive prior to work beginning, as agreed to during the bid meeting. This led to a delay in work beginning of perhaps one hour or more. While staff were generally courteous, communication was not particularly good and it was unclear who was leading the effort and making decisions, which became important - see below. It was also clear that the discussion regarding what was to be done was not translated completely to staff by Jonathan. Work discussed during the bid meeting included a full day with 4 staff. Three staff completed the work. They seemed concerned about completing their work early and related that they had another stop to include at the end of the day. Unfortunately, due mainly to the lack of coordination between Jonathan, myself, and his staff, the work plan was not clearly defined and staff completed their "work day" without completing the work in a manner I felt was in line with what was agreed to during the bid meeting. They also left without informing me they had finished or other notice (I was present at that time). After the crew departed, I called Jonathan and let him know of the situation and to relate several instances regarding how my expectations (per our discussion during bidding) had not been met. Jonathan related that while the crew numbered only 3, those present were of an equivalent skill level and composite billing rate of 4 staff. He also insisted on calling the crew back to complete the work so that I was "100% satisfied" with their work. I agreed, knowing however, that this would likely create an awkward situation for staff and myself. Staff did return and were courteous, but it was awkward, and we all knew it. I feel the crew did their best to meet my expectations but I will readily admit that I was not particularly able to effectively translate my expectations into their activities - that was the key component that I trusted that Jonathan would provide. So it came down to the end of the work day and staff are now presenting me with the bid they want me to sign acknowledging that they did the work as specified in the bid sheet task list. I felt compelled for us all to move on so I signed and we all moved on. Was I completely satisfied with the process or outcome? No. Was it my decision to not push for more? Certainly. Sometimes you have to learn your lesson, assess your losses, and move on. One last item: I generally expect a little extra out of contractors. I'm a contractor myself and always try to give a little extra. And as a client, if you ask for a little something that's not outrageous, I expect that the contractor will make a bit of an extra effort to do it - and I tend to tip staff generously for that effort. That's just good marketing, for them as a service provider and me as a valued client. I had the expectation of having these guys for an entire day - that's what I believed I was paying for. So I had a few extra items that might have taken 5-10 minutes to complete; not much given that I'd lost at least an hour on the front end and the 30 minutes they were gone until they came back for a second try. Regardless, my minor requests were pretty much flatly denied or ignored, the reason given they had another job prior to the end of the day and that those items were not clearly defined on the bid sheet. Fair enough. Lost opportunities all around, as I see it. As a contractor, you want to be treated as a trusted advisor, not a commodity. I considered Jonathan as a good candidate as a trusted advisor: The discussion and relationship we begin building did not translate into job that met my expectations, regardless of the last corrective actions Jonathan attempted to make. Not coming to facilitate the corrective action yourself and having to produce the bid sheet, regardless of the underlying, unwritten agreement and relationship, does not build to a trusted advisor relationship. Thus, while a company with skilled people, communication and customer service are lacking. I cannot recommend Northwest Arbor Culture at this time. Moreover, I strongly suggest you ensure that every part of your agreement be written down on the bid sheet, even if it takes multiple pages. You want to believe this is not required but sometimes it turns out to be essential. read more

I worked with Jon on our tree removal needs. He came highly recommended as it is. He was prompt to come up to Tigard to give us a quote. He was very detailed and in the end his price was fair and reasonable. I called scheduled for an appointment on Wed 3/28/18 to have someone come out on Fri 3/30/18 between 930am-10:30am for no one to show up. Called back John Nash left him a message..got a call back from him and his secretary apparently scheduled me for the next Week's friday, rescheduled to have him come out on Monday 4/2/18 same time between 930-1030 (time and date suggested by John Nash)figured cool that works. Monday comes around and NO NW Arbor-Culture. Figured fine they're flakes don't need them. Today, Friday 4/6/18 I get woken up by my dog barking to go out and look through the window to see a random man walking down the side of my house, when I asked who he was and why he was there, he told me he was from NW Arbor... when I told him he was supposed to have been here Monday he flipped out on me and got into his car and sped off without even talking to me. Yelling that I needed to not play games. If this is the standard of this company then I might just be better off for not having not used them. read more

It was a big job that required a team of experts to climb some tall tree's, clear ivy from one tree and limb up a number of tree's that were haning over our roof. Called Jonathan for an estimate on the trees on my property I had just purchased. Jonathan was very accommodating.
