I have been going to NW Valley Eye for about 10 years and impressed by the service and growth of Dr. Toland's firm over that time. Now they are moving to a larger facility nearby shortly. After a lens replacement surgery (cataract) elsewhere, I began to have double vision, which was corrected with prisms cut into the lenses. Along came a recent hire, Dr. Julie Lam, who has training in Neurovisual Medicine. She fine tuned the prescription until my vision is nearly perfect. I still have to use cheaters for up close vision, but one can not correct everything at once! Shout out to Brent, a very knowledgeable tech who helped and advised me. Short Version: I would not recommend this organization for vision care needs. This office staff took financial advantage of me and has continued to string me along for months, while providing different stories each time I speak with them. Please be mindful of your loved ones and friends who may be targets for this office, as they do serve a large senior citizen clientele who may sometimes be particularly vulnerable. And as this demographic is less likely to speak up and share about their experience online - I think this review is especially important, hopefully it helps inform people who are looking for vision care for themselves or others. I have posted here and on the local social media pages for Sun City, Surprise, and surrounding communities, nextdoor and FB. In those posts I have included the copies of the emails between myself and the staff so people can see the whole picture for themselves. Long Version: The questionable accounting practices of NW Valley Eye Care have lead me to warning people from my community and my organization against trusting their vision and wallet to NW Valley. They improperly billed me, resulting in an overpayment that I discovered. Later, they noted they would refund me, but then never did. I caught on my VSP bill that I had been overcharged by this office months earlier. When I called NWV to resolve this, the office said they chose to not use my VSP benefit for my visit, instead the office charged me outright. Karen told me that they charged me based on the fact that they were "saving the usage of my benefit for when I ordered contacts". This is so unsettling, as I don't order contacts directly through NW Valley (never have), since VSP discounts the contacts I order from their "Eyeconic" website, directly. *Also, for me, I had LASIK a couple weeks after my vision exam, so I certainly had no intentions of ordering contacts from anyone. The office staff emailed me back on July 16th that I'd be getting my refund in 1- 2 weeks. Did not address the issue of the missing portion of the reimbursement whatsoever. Didn't hear from Northwest Valley for 5 weeks, so I reached out on August 21. I got an email back saying Karen sent the initial message to the accountant staff initially. On August 22 the office called me back and said "we never reached out to you or sent the reimbursement because the authorization from the day of your visit per your insurance doesn't show coverage for a contact fit, just for a contact exam". This part is hard to believe, as why would NW Valley not have subsequently called or emailed in an attempt to notify me, as I am their patient and the last communication they sent was telling me to expect the reimbursement due after the overcharge. So, either they're so disorganized/ negligent that they will overcharge you to cover their billing errors, OR they are willfully engaging in less than scrupulous business practices. I had already covered my bases by the time of the August 22 phone call - I work in medical billing but all insurances are different, so I had already reached out to VSP twice about this specific matter. During these calls VSP confirmed eligibility, services rendered/billed and that amount I was responsible for versus what I payed. Opinion: To be fair, the optometrists at NW Vision were very pleasant! But for me, it's not worth it. I'd rather not have to deal with worrying about someone purposefully overcharging me, and the ensuing battle to get back my own money. I never wrote anything negative about them before, but I feel like sharing the experience is the right thing to do. I know I'm not the only person who has been treated like this, but I might be one of the people in a position to get the word out to social media etc so others don't have to go through it too. read more

My ophthalmologist referred me to this optometry practice for a routine vision exam for new glasses. At my appointment, Northwest Valley Eye Care (NVEC) told me that they would perform a retina exam as part of the patient workup. I informed them that my ophthalmologist had recently performed one, so I would decline the service. Here are the mistakes made by NVEC, all of which could have been avoided if they'd simply telephoned my ophthalmologist to verify that I'd had a recent retina exam done, and waived their policy of doing one themselves: MISTAKE #1: They insisted on doing the retina exam, and said that they would not perform the vision exam without it, and I would also have to pay $29 up front for the service. Since I had already waited more than a month for this appointment and needed new glasses soon, I relented - although I did refuse to let them dilate my eyes since I had a full day of errands around town to get done. MISTAKE#2: NVEC never submitted a claim for the retina exam, and I finally had to submit a request for reimbursement from my insurance company myself. They approved it, but told me on the phone that since this service was considered a diagnostic procedure/test and since NVEC is in my network, reimbursement is required to go directly to them and then they must reimburse me. MISTAKE #3: My insurance company also told me that they had sent the electronic payment to NVEC 3 weeks prior to this phone conversation - but when they called NVEC to remind them of their responsibility to reimburse me, the office manager said they never received that payment from the insurance company (highly unlikely). MISTAKE #4: A week later, I called my insurance company back, and they contacted NVEC and was told that the $29 check had been mailed to me 2 days prior (unlikely since it took another 6 days for me to receive it - within the same zip code). All I wanted was a routine vision exam. However, NVEC's policy of requiring their own retina exam felt like selling up, and is highly unethical in a medical practice. They dragged their feet on reimbursing me - claiming they hadn't received the money from the insurance company. This felt dishonest. And straightening this out required many phone calls between me and my insurance company, and wasted weeks of my time. There are many options out there for vision care. If you want care from a practitioner who is honest, and ethical, and one you can trust, please do yourself a favor and avoid Northwest Valley Eye Care. You'll be glad you did. read more

I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Toland today and had a great experience. Staff are very nice, and Dr. Toland performed a very comprehensive exam. I was most excited that they graciously agreed to put new lenses on my existing Versace glasses, rather than making me buy new glasses. They are also in network for VSP insurance. I needed new contacts and due to COVIS-19 my regular Eyecare provider was closed. NW Valley Eyecare was able to see me on an urgent basis. I had no backup glasses that were my current prescription and working without contacts was not possible. Dr. Toland and his staff were friendly and helpful. I had the most complete eye exam ever. He was able to fit me with a pair of trial lenses until my order comes in. In this crazy time in our world I really appreciate being able to get my eyes checked and contacts ordeeed so I can continue to work. I highly recommend Dr. Toland. I truly wish I could give a 5 star review because the staff was Amazing but they did me dirty. I called around to many different optical centers looking for a specific lens because my RX causes bottle cap lenses. I spoke to Brent who adv me they could help me and I ran right over. Well to make a long story short I ended up with bottle cap lenses. I was heartbroken but the worst part was I still had to pay for them. Now I have a pair of bottle cap glasses that are so heavy on my face and that my little nose cant hold up for a long period of time so now I am stuck with a pair of glasses that I hate and I cant even wear. The point I want to make with this review is if you have an easy RX for your lenses they are a great place to go to but if you have a more complex lens this is definitely not the place to go. read more

I had only been in Sun City a few weeks when I experienced an eye hemorrhage which frightened me to death. Urgent Care said I needed to go directly to an eye specialist. I looked online and picked Northwest Valley Eyecare. It was 15 minutes to them closing and I was not a patient of theirs. Dr David Toland gladly took me in and did a complete exam throughly explaining what I was experiencing. A month later I made an appointment for myself and my daughter for an exam for new glasses. Dr Toland is so professional and his office is first class. The office staff is friendly and very helpful. We even purchased our eyewear there and found the price reasonable. Had to go in to see Dr. Toland today on an emergency basis due to a chemical burn I got in my eye. They fit me right in and took great care of me without making me feel stupid for causing this problem in the first place. Everyone was empathetic, kind, and even helped entertain my 2 year old to make sure that Dr. Toland could give me the best care possible. It is very rare to find such kind, empathetic people who treat you like a valued friend. We have been going here for about 15 years. Our original optometrist there decided to go part time before retiring. We were concerned when Dr. Toland joined the group. He seemed so much younger & we were not sure if he had the experience needed. We decided to give him a try. Wow, we received the most thorough eye exam that we ever had! Dr. Toland also explained the results of the test to us & provided us with information to better protect our eyes. He keeps up to date on the latest eye health care & procedures. Twice, my new glasses seemed too strong. It was my fault because I looked at the boldest print on the images, not what looked the best to me. My eyes were tired & my allergies were bothering them. Dr. Toland retested me & changed the prescription on my glasses at no charge. He never made me feel bad about what happened. He know that it takes more time with me & never makes me feel rushed. He just wants me to have the correct prescription. I highly recommend Northwest Valley Eyecare! As to the former review of one star. This was a harsh review. After having a string of mediocre eye doctors, including some who just try to sell you add-on products, I believe I've found a really great eye care practice. Dr. Toland is very knowledgeable and takes the time he needs to assess your eye health. In 1997 I had my first experience with NW Valley Eyecare. It was the best examine and pick of a glass frame that I had ever had before. I moved away from the area, but in 2008 when a sand storm occurred, my retina was scratched. I remember driving around trying to locate an eye doctor to help me, but every where I stopped they were too busy (wait estimated over an hour). Now mind you, my eye was so bad the tears were pouring down my chin. (Not a good thing to see on a man). Finally I decided to drive back to Sun City and to NW Valley Eyecare. They took me in right away and Dr. Toland treated me. What I recall from this experience is he cared enough to drop everything and handle it ASAP. He also personally called me the next day to check in on how I was feeling. To say the least, I will now drive out of my way to come back to NW Valley Eyecare! read more
