Mashed potatoes tasteless, green beans under cooked, tips had a weird chemical taste I think it was suppose to make them taste charcoal broiled? The service is mediocre at best, the food small and nothing special, both times I had food not come as I ordered it and it is way overpriced for what it is. Family and I stopped by Not Your Average Joe's in Warwick. We have one locally, and hadn't been back since our first visit shortly after they opened. We were quite happy to have tried it again. The food was all good and our server Tabitha, was great - very friendly and attentive. We mentioned we were trying to get to a movie and she told us right away about the deal they have on movie tickets - a bargain. In addition, when she overheard us talking about our son being at West Point, she added the military discount, without us even asking. Like some others have pointed out, the place lures you with a certain sophisticated vibe, exquisite-sounding menu, but then the experience is just flat. Like, you know, Cowesett Inn level. You end up paying top buck, though. Pricey for what it is. Hubby and I ordered the specials, since those are more likely to be fresh and interesting. Shnitzel+Kugel and then Clams in beer. Blah. Very conservative and uninspired flavor. My soup of the day was spiced pumpkin apple cider. That was actually pretty awesome soup. Great balance of flavors. My autumn spice sangria was so mild and watered down. It probably had less booze than a cooking wine. That's how it felt, at least. Fries that came with the grilled cheese sandwich were pretty dried up, fiberous. Cardboardesque? I wish they carried a good hot sauce to accompany the blandness. The only hot sauce available was watery, hot but not very flavorful Tabasco. Cholula or Sriracha would make this whole adventure at bit more exciting. Maybe. Ambiance is nice. But I really don't want to pay for pretty. I want to pay for tasty, different, unique character etc. Sadly, it's a bit of a sensual bait and switch. But it's not utterly horrible. Average, yes. Not Your Average Joe's was a hit when they first opened, though there can be a wait for dinner, it's a pretty popular spot! Nachos, wonton tacos, and flat breads are great apps but the bread/oil that comes before it are the real hit here. It can get a bit loud during dinner times, taking away from great atmosphere and open kitchen concept, but it won't keep me from remaining the regular I've become. read more

I finally got to try Not Your Average Joe's last month for my birthday dinner. They have a really great email club that send coupons so I was able to get my birthday dinner on the house (so sign up!!!) I am still thinking about the Ahi Tuna Salad that I had that night. It was light and flavorful, perfectly portioned. I also tried their strawberry rhubarb sangria which felt like summer in a glass come early. The dink was not overly strong though, so if you are looking for a kick maybe go in a different direction. I will be back soon for sure. read more

We have been coming here since they opened. I don't know what happened, tonight the food was terrible. I had the baked haddock, it was so salty it was almost inedible. I was very disappointed but we were in a hurry to get to a movie so I didn't make a stink about it. I understand if it was packed in brine which has salt but to add more salt to the breading was just too much. I doubt we will be back. Sorry. read more

Based on the location and the interesting sounding items on their menu, I had hoped for a better experience. I went here with my wife and toddler after a bit of shopping and had fairly tame expectations after reading the reviews. I'll start with the good. The ambiance and the service was good. Our waitress was very friendly and checked back in regularly without hovering. The food came out promptly, but here is where a place that claims not to be average landed squarely in the middle of the bell curve. I started with the "nacho average nachos". The frustrating thing about these was that they had potential. Unfortunately the execution was very poor. All of the melted cheese was cooled and congealed into 2 big clumps across 3 chips. The shredded chicken was clustered mainly on one side of the pile of chips. The tasty corn salsa was lingering under the pile of chips and there was only about 1 tablespoon of guacamole. For my main course I had the special beer marinated clams over linguine. There was nothing wrong with this dish, but it lacked any real creativity or originality in flavor. It was very forgettable. Ok, for the tl;dr - food was boring, but sounded interesting from the description. Place was nice. Service was good. I may try this place again if they start getting better reviews, but I wouldn't go out of my way. read more

I have been here before and have never been disappointed. But recently I was diagnosed with a gluten allergy. They have a decent menu for gluten free foods and our waiter Chris S was beyond helpful to ensure that I was able to get my meal without complications or cross contamination. As a beer drinker who can only have gluten free beer, Chris went out of his way to ensure I enjoyed the new beer that was hard to swallow after enjoying so many good beers over the years. Have been on a few occasions and enjoyed the food every time. Last week had killer risotto and short ribs from the specials menu. Have had some minor issues with service being "spotty" in terms of speed/efficiency and also inconsistent drinks from the bar (1st pitcher of margaritas not strong enough, 2nd pitcher knock ur socks off with tequila) But ya know what, when the place is slammed and everything on the menu is made from scratch I think you have to expect a few minor hiccups. At the end of each meal, I've thoroughly enjoyed my food and felt the service was good. I have pretty high standards for what I eat, most of the time I just cook at home bc I'd rather control the quality and flavor of the ingredients, but NYAJ has lived up to my standards. Not Your Average Joe's is right! Very impressed with this place after I enjoyed a nice afternoon lunch with some wonderful friends. Just by chance we actually all ended up knowing the waitress which made for an even more pleasant experience. She was friendly, attentive and not to forget; drop dead gorgeous! Her name has slipped my mind, but I'll sure be back and request her again. Complimentary bread was served and food came out at a reasonable time. Asking around the table for opinions, I started to my right. I asked my good friend if his sirloin tips were good and he bursting out with an "awwww yeah". Asking to my front, "It could possibly be the best buffalo chicken pizza I've ever had". Big words and shoes to fill, but I just might agree with that statement! The friend who ordered the chicken tenders loved them as well and they made sure there wasn't an empty spot on his plate! I ordered the bbq chicken pizza (obviously) and I was also impressed. This place is simply underrated and although might be a dollar or two pricier than you'd expect with somethings; it's worth it. Atmosphere, food variety, friendly service, this place has all of that. Returned to NYAJ this week to share a birthday celebration with a friend. Service was fine, bread was delicious, but food was just ok. This is the second time I ordered a salad and have not been impressed with either one. The birthday girl had the soup and sandwich combo which she seemed to enjoy and I am happy that she did! Back in January, I ordered the Super Crunch Salad: grilled chicken tossed with quinoa, green apples, pistachios, avocado, spinach, mint and cilantro in an orange-sesame dressing. I did not enjoy the "bite" that the ingredients seemed to have yet it did seem healthy. This time I had the Roasted Beet and Blue Cheese salad which consisted of grilled chicken, roasted red beets tossed with maple yogurt dressing, spinach, arugula and romaine, with candied pistachios, oranges and chives for $13.50. It sounded fantastic but I found it to be minimal on the number of beets and pistachios; the maple yogurt dressing had very little flavor until I added some olive oil. Considering the price of that entree, the size was ok, the flavor was about the same, but the quantity of ingredients other than the greens needs improvement. I often order salads in restaurants so I do compare. Perhaps they need to work on improving their salads! read more

I came to this place as a friend recommended it. The best part about the place was the bread and dipping oil that starts the meal! That and 22oz beers never go wrong. I got a salad that was very good, almond crusted goat cheese balls and candied pecans was a great blend of flavors. What I didn't like was the service and atmosphere. Just got lunch here for the first time with a friend. Atmosphere-wise the place is really spacious and the bar looks fancy (white backlit lighting behind the shelves). The selection of food was decent, though I'd prefer to see more pasta dishes. I asked for Mac and Cheese but apparently they change their menu seasonally so it's not offered this time of year. I ordered a small pizza topped with mozzarella and ricotta which was quite delicious. I have to say our server Kayla was great. She spotted my friend who apparently had her last time she came, hence she got our table. When my friend's burger came Kayla immediately noticed it was the wrong one and took it back. You could argue that's turning a negative into a positive but the point is she was cool and doesn't suck at her job. All in all I had a great experience. Only thing I'll add is I find it odd the place was empty at 2pm on a Saturday. Plan in advance if you decide to go on a Friday or Saturday night...I've driven by Warwick Mall and the place was packed. I went to NYAJ w my husband, a friend and our daughters for lunch. The ambiance was nice and I was really looking forward to the freshly made food. The bread and olive oil was delicious. My husband ordered the nachos for an app and they were not what we expected. The portion was very small for a hefty price. My friend and my husband both had burgers. My husband with onion straws which were not hot at all. They both said the burgers were ok yet lacked flavor. I ordered the mustard crusted chicken. Although it tasted very fresh it really did lack flavor. I could not taste any mustard. I used my daughters bbq sauce to add a little kick. My daughter and her friend enjoyed the chicken fingers! I came here with my girlfriend for the first time ever a month ago, after a tiring trip to the mall next door, with very low expectations--chain restaurants usually suck--and mostly because she wanted a salad. (Why don't more restaurants have fresh, non-boring salads on the menu?) Instead, we were both blown away: my steak tips were fantastic and her Instagram-worthy Cobb salad came perfectly arranged in a bowl and was delicious. We liked the food so much we went again to their Seekonk location three days later, on a very busy Friday night. We loved the ahi tuna wontons, but her Supercrunch Salad and my dry and cardboard-y meatloaf were forgettable (literally, yesterday she couldn't remember what she had the last time). We chalked it up to a busy night and left. Which brings me to last night, another busy Friday night. We ordered the wontons (again), the mustard crusted chicken, and a chicken Cobb salad. The wontons were OK, not as good as Seekonk's. Both of our chickens were overcooked and tough--frankly, just what I'd expect at a chain restaurant. My green beans were undercooked and my chicken was served on top of the mashed potatoes, defeating the point of the crust. (Serving meat on top of steaming starch is an idiotic idea, period.) Her Cobb salad was haphazardly dumped on a plate, with torn instead of chopped lettuce, and just terrible all around. Chengdu Taste, a hole-in-the-wall Szechuan restaurant we go to almost weekly, run by three Chinese guys in Pawtucket who barely speak English, delivers a consistently fantastic experience. The "Not" in their name isn't justified unless they can do the same. read more

NYAJ's became way less than average. Having dined at two locations - Warwick, RI, and Seekonk, MA - we see both locations lacking in service and quality. Last night we stopped in for a "third time's a charm" or "three strikes you're out." They struck out in Seekonk. :-( We sat at the bar and ordered a Ketel One vodka martini with blue cheese stuffed olives, and a Ketel One Cosmo with Cointreau. Response from the bar tender: "I'm allergic to cheese and we don't have cointreau." OK great way to push back on your customers. Now what? The martini was delivered without olives, which were prepared by another bartender and showed up 20 minutes later with half the drink gone. A Cosmo includes vodka, triple sec or cointreau, fresh lime juice and a splash of cranberry juice. The Cosmo arrived without lime juice, which I asked for and included. It was the worst cosmo ever. Seriously, I'm not sure what was in it. I should've sent it back. Then we ordered two entrees. One arrived correctly, the other was wrong. One of us finished our dinner, the other hadn't received it yet. The GM came over and apologized. She said she was very happy that we listened to her explain the issues, and that she'd take of it. We weren't sure what that meant, and apparently it meant nothing different was going to happen. We got our bill and left. We are so sad that one of our favorite places has gone down hill. When NYAJ's began changing a few years ago, everything changed, and now we find this new chain less than average - or just like every other chain. :-( read more

To die for! Stopped in on a whim, slight wait but as our waitress assured us, the bread and oil would be worth the wait--she was right! so worth it. Mom and I shared a pitcher of Sangria, the butternut squash flatbread (YUM!) Spring roll, French onion soup, and for an entree mom had the ahi tuna salad and I had the goat cheese salad, both very good! I adore the decor, and our waitress was pretty awesome, wish I remembered her name (short blonde). Can't wait to return with my hubby so he can try the pizza. read more

Wow, I wanted to like this place I really did. I like the feel/atmosphere . First drink I ask which of the margaritas is not as sour she advised me on the least expensive one which was a good thing although I don't mind paying more for a good drink since I only have one or two. The drink came out very good as me an my GF split the one drink. I ordered another it came out extremely sour. I asked if there was a change in bartender as the drink was completely different. I was told no it's the same bartender. The waitress came out with another drink. As I'm looking at it i can see that it's the same exact drink. I asked about it. Her answer was yea the bartender added agave to it . That is NOT how it should have went. You throw out the terrible drink and remake it period end of story. On top of that it was not even close to the first drink, Now all you tasted was sweet aka sugar. Now on top of that our pizza , it was undercooked and soggy,I had to ask for plates so we could eat it,I don't know if they expect you to not use plates to eat a pizza but that's not ok . As for the other 4 people at our table it two burgers, 2 eggs Benedict. Both burgers over cooked. 1 eggs Benedict was not edible the other ate it but said it was over boiled. read more

Hmmmmm.................the word that comes to mid is CHAOS. I met my dinner companion at 5:30. Upon entering the doorway was very crowded. We maneuvered over to the bar where there were no seats due to a Holiday party standing occupying half of the bar space. You get it--chaos..However when we were seated our server Mathew was fun and informative -- all the while training a new server. Our food was good..I had the Crab Cake BLT and my companion had the Jumbolia. Both good...the creme boule cheesecake was YUMMY. I have been to this location several times since it has opened in Warwick. Each time the service and food were great. I ordered a different meal each time and all of them were fantastic. The BBQ chicken pizza was delicious perfect amount of sauce and the chicken was cut into pieces that were easy to eat on a pizza. The Caesar salad was fresh and the dressing had a nice lemon taste to it without being overpowering. Others in our party had the meatloaf and the pork both ways - both of which were described as delicious. The portion sizes are great, definitely enough to make two meals from and well worth the price. We have had great service on every visit. Certainly nothing I would complain about. I should think that people that are complaining about service should cut them some slack - not everything goes completely smoothly all the time especially during a super busy holiday season! Not Your Average Joe's is a neat little burger/sandwich joint type place centrally located next to Warwick Mall. It's a quick easy bite to eat, with a nice selection on their menu, including some local brews. I had a burger grilled to perfection with a tasty gluten-free caramelized onion bun. By far the most unique and flavorful GF bread choice of any restaurant chain I've ever visited. Overall, the service was fast, friendly, and welcoming. The place was really busy, especially for a random weeknight. The waitress offered us a $5 discount voucher for our next visit since we were first time customers, but then she forgot to give it to us - it's the thought that counts? Second visit to NYAJ presented another barely 3 star visit. There is really no way I could assign any more points. I'm sorry to have to say that NYAJ is a really average restaurant. I guess perhaps you can't get get much better from a chain restaurant (although I actually have at at least one chain restaurant, but I digress). Second visit, my friend and I started out with Bloody Marys and she also ordered a chicken wrap appetizer (Asian, I think it was). The app was divine, but the drinks were so spicy hot, we ended up sending them back. They were so hot it was impossible to drink them and still try to enjoy ourselves and our lunch. So the waiter happily took them back, and the bartender kindly remixed the two drinks (I'm not sure what he did, possibly tossed out some of the drink and added tomato juice?). For sure the drink did not get made again from scratch, or else I'm pretty certain it wouldn't come back to table still quite spicy - a couple of spice notes down from the first drink, but still not acceptable. I really absolutely hate food/drinks that are seriously hot/spicy. But I do love wasabi on my sushi, pepper flakes on my pizza etc., it's not that I don't do hot at all. I just don't do THAT hot. Our waiter (Mike) could not have been nicer, bending over backwards to accommodate us. So I must say the service the second time here was again excellent. Back to the food. I ordered the gluten free mac and cheese and my friend ordered some sort of sandwich. She said hers was fair to middlin' and my macaroni and cheese was acceptable, but nothing more. I was grateful to be able to get it GF, but there was a lot of butternut squash in it - it was, to be fair, billed this way on the menu -- but I was going for the taste of cheese which was not prevalent. So the mac and cheese was more squash and less cheese and about as bland a dish as I have ever tasted. The pasta was perfectly cooked and tasted just like normal pasta. But the dish just didn't do it for me - just OK. Since this was my second time at NYAJ and once again, my dining experience was just barely average, I will most likely not return unless I plan to be at the mall, meeting a friend for lunch - if this were the case I might consider returning and giving the burger and fries a try. read more

Not Your Average Joe's really is not that average, in that it is super above average. I'm pretty jaded as of late (look at my recent reviews) and my boyfriend and I were pretty tuckered out from Record Store Day shopping, but we figured that we'd give this place a shot, hoping that it would be out of the ordinary. They also had outdoor seating, and I really needed some sun on my pale skin. Kayla was an AMAZING server. She brought a smile to my face, and was incredibly personable. After being in the service industry myself for many years, it was refreshing to have a server be attentative and truly do their best to make the dining experience wonderful. She was on spot with recommendations and truly knew how to make us feel at ease. I truly hope management is reading this because you've got a great server in Kayla. She would joke around with my boyfriend and I, and made the night so much more amazing. Bravo. Now, on to the food and drink. My boyfriend ordered the Revival Hefeweizen. Too hoppy for me, but I was expecting that out of a Revival beer. I was glad to see some local favorites on the menu, and impressed that the bar served a 'specialty' (read, many places don't have it) beer. I went with the jungle juice, and it of course came in an adorable mason jar mug and was light and fruity. It didn't have much of an alcoholic 'kick' in it, but it still quenched my thirst and I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. The bread. Oh my gosh, the bread. I try to stay away from gluten, but I just couldn't resist this. It was delicious, warm, fluffy, and all of the things that I should stay away from, but I just couldn't resist. Kayla didn't give any gruff when we asked for more (twice) and actually laughed along with us when we couldn't handle the amazement of the bread. It was served with a Parmesan, red pepper, and garlic aioli that just sweetened the deal. My boyfriend started off with a Waldorf salad which was worth the $6. Fresh crusted walnuts, delicately shredded cheese, and just enough green apple. I was jealous. For the entrees, he enjoyed a pulled pork sandwich with onion straws and I went with the steak tips. I felt the pulled pork was a little mushy, but he loved it, and that's what counts. Usually a restaurant will burn steak tips, but I ordered mine medium, and darn it, they came out medium and delicious. They were tender, juicy, and the marinade was just perfect to sop up with my garlic mashed potatoes. I'm not normally a fan of garlic mashed, but these weren't overly garlicky. Along with the GMP there were some green beans... which were cooked al dente, if you will. Not a soggy bean in sight, as these guys were steamed to have just a little crunch. Delicious. My boyfriend and I were amazed at how a local 'chain' (there are several locations) could blow us away. As others have said, the menu is very eccentric ala Cheesecake Factory, but you will find something you like. The ambiance is great, and I really want to try these folks again during a Bruins playoff game, as the bar was large and inviting. We ended the evening with buying two tickets to catch Divergent down the parking lot at Showcase. 8$ and change for tickets instead of 11.50$?! I'll take it! In all seriousness, dining here is what dining should be, an experience.
