Went to this vet a couple of times. Care was ok, though vet said he would call to follow up on my cat's stomach ailment - he never did, but seriously felt both visits were trying to get more money out of me, ie tests etc. that weren't really needed. Second time I went was to clear my cat for overseas flight. Vet practically blackmailed me, telling me she wouldn't sign the papers (you only have a 10-day window - for paperwork to be stamped by a vet and rushed to return from Richmond before departure). My cat has always checked out super healthy and suddenly she tells me he has a heart murmur and she's "not comfortable" signing the papers until I get a full-load of testing done to the tune of hundreds of dollars. She really held it over my head, even after admitting cat was likely not in any imminent danger. In that case, considering I'm under a time constraint, stressing with a major move, just sign the papers! After back and forth, she finally gave in, telling me .. well I cannot sign off on the company release form (which costs you more money btw and is only an internally generated form, ie not a legal form required for transport of an animal. More money $500 recommended for testing an admittedly healthy cat last visit, more money this time and holding it over my head. Didn't feel good. I would find another. read more

There is no doubt in my mind that NoVa Cat Clinic is the best possible place to take your cats. I have worked with them for years and the experience has been amazing. The reception staff is always friendly when you come in and you can tell they really care about you and your cat/cats. I always get prompt service and the vets will even call you after hours and on the weekends to consult and check up on their patients. When you are there you feel like family and not just another patient that is in and out of there in no time. The doctors always take the time to talk and consult without rushing you out the door. I just took my "special needs" cat to Dr. Brown for the first time. Poppie has cerebellar hypoplasia, which makes him stagger a bit. We had been overseas without good vets for a few years and he had some issues. Dr. Brown and his staff took a lot of time and care to examine Poppie and take his history. Poppie didn't want to get out of his carrier so they just took the top off and left him in for his exam. This whole visit was much more thorough than the big clinic near my house in upper northwest DC. I do think a specialized cat clinic is well worth the drive for me. Dr. Brown called me on a Saturday with the results of the tests and to follow up. I was going to stay with the closer clinic for my other normal cat but I've changed my mind after this. read more

We have been taking our cat to Dr. Brown for 6 years now and are very pleased with the care. One of our cats has very complex medical issues and Dr. Brown has offered excellent care and guidance on how to manage her disease. Having taken our "complicated" cat to several vets before 2007, I can honestly say that most vets do not have a depth of understanding when it comes to managing complex diseases. Dr. Brown does. He is friendly, knows his stuff, and is up on the latest developments in the literature. Our two cats have been patients of the NOVA Cat Clinic (formerly the Capital Cat Clinic) since we moved to the Washington, DC area a year and a half ago. The vets here are fantastic, as are the vet assistants and the front desk staff. Every time one of our cats has had a problem, we've been able to get appointments quickly, get them viewed and diagnosed promptly and back to normal shortly thereafter. The girls at the front desk have been awesome whenever we've needed insurance forms filled and they do a wonderful job with keeping clients up to date on the clinic on the social media pages for the clinic. We've also never felt like the doctors gave the cats any treatments they didn't need or overly medicated them. Definitely would recommend the clinic even though if living in DC, it can be a pain to get to in times of high traffic. With that said, it is worth the trip and while we have clinics much closer to us, we would never consider switching from NOVA. read more

I'm a first time "cat parent," so I obviously had a lot of questions and concerns about my kitty who tested FIV+ and is having significant adjustment issues to his new home, including inappropriate elimination. Prices are higher than I'm used to out west, but seems fair for inflation and the services that are provided. Tommy Gargoyle had a large behavioral issue with spraying all around our new home. We ran up $600 in vet services with blood work, tests, urinalysis, exam, additional test to rule out hyperthyroidism. He's healthy as a horse, but needs his teeth cleaned. The spraying didn't slow down until a realistic conversation about Prozac came up. We agreed we'd tried everything else, including Bach's Rescue Remedy Pet, calming collars, ssscat cans, scat mats, new litter boxes, gallons of Nature's Miracle. With the Prozac, he hasn't felt the need to mark everything, but still has all his baby boy purrsonality. read more

Best cat only clinic in Northern Virginia. They have taken excellent care of both of my cats for several years. Both cats have serious medical and psychological issues. One has been diabetic since age 2, the other has chronic problems locating his litter box. If it weren't for Nova Cat Clinic, I might have given up on these two, but luckily they have been able to come up with multiple solutions each time I am at my wits end. I have taken my Cluny and Cuervo Sebastian here for 6 years now and wouldn't go anywhere else. The staff are lovely people who are friendly, helpful, and remember my name and my cats' names! I have used at least 4 different doctors here at one time or another and each has been great.My 11 year old cats have problems with allergies and one has a chronic condition that has to be treated. You also know they know their stuff they don't overwhelm you with medical jargon - they take the time break it down for the average Joe so you can understand whats what. I love this place. It just has a good vibe the moment you walk in the door, with the rescue kitties playing in the waiting room. My cats are always panicked on the car ride over, but as soon as we get inside the vet, they stop howling and get weirdly calm (must be all the pheromone dispensers in there?). When I was there for an annual check up last week, someone brought in a new baby kitten they'd just found in their yard. The staff literally dropped everything to care for this kitten, who was extremely dehydrated, and even agreed to take her in as one of their own rescues. That made me think really highly of them--it just feels like they actually deeply care about cats as opposed to just being about the $$$$$. read more

I have a strong preference for a cat-only practice and this is the closest place in the area that fits the bill. The vets and the new facility are great. Unfortunately, scheduling an appointment with the front desk staff is just about unbearable. I've experienced difficulty getting through, long hold times, online scheduling mistakes. They once called the day before a confirmed-in-writing appointment to let me know they'd made an error recording the date and my appointment wasn't actually when I had been told it was. I may give them one more chance for my older cat because I think the lower-stress experience and cat-focused care for her are worth a bit of hassle for me but I guess our new kitten will be seeing our dog's more responsive and easy to schedule vet. I would have loved to take him here but the little guy needs shots and the laissez faire approach to scheduling isn't going to get him what he needs. read more

I've been to several vet clinics and animal hospitals over the years and, even though this was my first visit to NOVA Cat Clinic, I was blown away by how great it is. I was able to handle the request for an appointment and all paperwork via email, and I got a response within 15 minutes to confirm the appointment and receipt of those documents. This is a cat-only facility, so there were no barking dogs to upset my girls when we arrived; they were calmer than they've ever been at a vet. The reception room is clean and welcoming, with "house cats" to play with and pet while waiting; the ladies in reception are cheerful and knowledgeable; and our new vet (Dr. Erica Barron) is patient, friendly, and funny. She was able to put us and our fur babies at ease immediately. She spent a lot of time with us, listening to our concerns and going through the diagnosis and treatment steps she would recommend. I've also never had a vet so open about the costs of these things before. She didn't flinch when we asked about how much something would be and she didn't push us in any way. We got "report cards" for our two cats during the check-out process, and our vet contacted us with personalized emails the next day to go over the results of their blood work. I'm very happy with every aspect of my dealings with NOVA Cat Clinic, and I'd highly recommend them. read more

I love the vet practice we take our dog to, which we've used for years. But one of my three cats is VERY stressed by being in the car, so the drive to that practice is just too much for her. A friend was working at NOVA Cat Clinic and she really knows cats, so I decided to take my cats to NOVA because it's so much closer. The care has been first-rate. Not only are the vets themselves outstanding but the vet techs and assistants just ooze love and kindness all over the cats! They make a (quiet) fuss over them, give them lots of affection, and generally make the process of being held and prodded and given shots, etc., as easy as possible. Yes, the building is old and not in good condition but a move is in the works to a new facility. Plus, this practice does something I've never experienced before: they have cats and kittens they take in, care for and adopt out, including "special needs" kitties. Some that aren't truly adoptable simply remain resident cats at NOVA. These people and this place are truly special. read more

I went to Banfield for a while because they cost a little less, but was never really happy with them. The whole office staff at NOVA is caring and helpful. Concerned it could be cancerous, we took him in. The Vet was very nice, examined him and told us it was nothing to be worried about. I know there are plenty of places out there that would have taken advantage of the situation and told us we needed a whole slew of tests, etc. but she didn't. We will definitely go back. Very disappointing end to a long relationship. I feel they failed in their duty of care to my darling Jasmine the last few weeks of her life. I had taken my two cats Georgie and Jasmine to Nova cat clinic since I first adopted them 17 years ago - mostly seeing Dr Brown. Unfortunately he got very busy and was not often available for appointments so starting seeing the other vets who are much younger and so due to less years of practice, less experienced than Dr Brown. My first issue was with Georgie when he had a feeding tube put in by another Vet hospital and needed it replaced as it had come out. Nova cat clinic replaced it, but after the operation did not put a proper bandage on it like the hospital had - they put a loose sleeve type bandage - so Georgie was able to scratch the wound overnight which caused an abscess and infection for which I had to go back to the vet hospital to have it lanced and properly bandaged which was very distressing for Georgie and me and cost a fortune. About 4 weeks before my darling Jasmine went to God I took her into their clinic as she was eating cat litter and really out of sorts. I had read online that cats eating cat litter can mean something is very wrong/they can be very sick (but Nova cat clinic vets didn't seem to know about this as they didn't indicate to me they thought it was a major indicator of serious illness). They did blood tests and examined her and although many of the numbers were off the charts above or below normal - they didn't seem to be worried about those numbers - and weren't sure what the problem was. They said she was borderline hyperthyroid - one vet thinking it wasn't such a big deal if she didn't have the medication for that and one other vet pushing hard for her to have that medication which can have nasty side effects). They gave her an iron shot on the first visit in October. She was still eating cat litter less than a week later so I went in with her again and saw another vet at Nova cat clinic who also examined her and I think gave her fluids and/or a B12 injection on the 2nd visit in October. About a week later she was still out of sorts and still eating cat litter and obviously not feeling well so I went in again and saw yet another of the vets at Nova cat clinic, who gave her another exam and suggested she had hard stool and recommended stool softener (I feel it's possible this vet mistook the tumour for hard stool as her bowel movements had been normal). Less than a week later she was more unwell and so as it was a weekend I took her to a different/new vet who was open on the weekend. She examined her and straight away said there was a mass. She gave her an xray and gave me the devastating news that she had a huge tumour that was most likely cancer. I could not understand how in the three previous exams with Nova cat clinic they never felt the tumour (which I saw on the xray was huge), never suggested an ultra-sound or an xray during those last 3 visits, never mentioned cancer on any of the 3 visits in October/November. I have since written to Dr Brown several times asking about this and they have not addressed my queries about why they didn't suggest an ultra-sound or xray or didn't feel the mass in their last 3 exams. They have written back only saying that her ultra-sound in July showed thickening of the intestines - which could have meant Irritable bowel disease or lymphoma and at that time we put her on prednisolone. They seemed to think that from that ultrasound in July I should have known she had cancer but they did not discuss extensively with me how important it was for her to see an oncologist - however, I am not a vet, and I do not understand why they did not better explain to me that without treatment she would die or why in her last 3 visits they did not feel her tumour, did not recommend an ultra-sound or an xray. I know that she was not going to live forever if she had lymphoma - but she could have been more comfortable and had earlier chemo treatment which may have given her longer and a better quality of life those last weeks - possibly months if they had felt the mass on any one of their three last examinations. After my new vet showed me the xray I took her to an oncologist and she had an ultra-sound, had fluids and had a chemo injection. Unfortunately - I feel - as the chemo was started 3 weeks later than it might have been had Nova cat clinic felt her tumor or suggested the ultra-sound or xray on the first visit in October when she had started eating cat litter - I feel that she had more pain and discomfort and died sooner than she might have - had she had proper treatment on those last 3 visits with Nova cat clinic. I am devastated by her loss and more so - as I feel that Nova cat clinic vets failed in their duty of care to my darling Jasmine. This is such a devastating end to our long relationship. I cannot in good conscious recommend Nova cat clinic if there is something seriously wrong with your cat. read more

I have nothing but great things to say about NoVa Cat Clinic. I switched to NoVa 1.5 years ago after one of my cats started eating less and I read all the rave reviews about the practice. Despite a laundry list of medical problems they helped find, Drs. Barron, Brown and Wootton have all been great with her, and Dr. Barron's acupuncture has kept her going strong. They've also been great with my other cat, who had to have several teeth pulled along with other normal cat issues, and with me, who has worried through every procedure. The vet techs and front desk staff couldn't be a nicer or more professional group of people. There are a lot of vets closer to my house in NW DC, but it's worth the drive to NoVa - and that's saying a lot given how much my cats hate the car ride :-) read more

Twice now when Honey has been acutely ill(potentially fatal intestinal block) or injured, she was seen the day I called. The vet has shared her xrays with me, gone over test results, staff checked on her by email following our visit. Have never boarded my cat so not sure how that service is. My cats have been clients of NOVA Cat for ages, since we first moved to Arlington. It can be a very busy practice at times, but they do focus on each individual client. The staff are very knowledgeable, compassionate, and caring. It seems somewhat unfair to criticize the office itself as a previous poster has done - it is located in an old house but it is still quite charming and cozy. The office is moving to new space very soon, and I for one hope it is not too sterile and clinical. One of my cats just turned 18 and has been going to the clinic since he was just a young cat. He is normally terrified of the car and being outside our house, but the vets, techs, and staff are the best at calmly examining him, listening to me, and explaining what the best course of treatment might be. Dr. Wooton and Dr. Brown have always presented treatment options when needed and I haven't ever felt like they were merely pushing a particular treatment. They have guided us and several of our cats through cancer treatments, palliative measures, surgery, and now kidney disease. i have complete confidence in NOVA Cat and I am grateful to have found them! read more
