Novato Flooring recommendation I would like to commend Patrick West from Novato Flooring for putting his customer #1. We replaced 16-year-old linoleum kitchen floor with a luxury vinyl product from Medallion that within 1 year started to breakdown. Individual tiles were cupping and connections between the tiles were completely breaking off causing ridges between the tiles. Patrick and his team inspected the issue and agreed that a product should not be unusable after 1 year. He sent the manufacturer rep who seems to continue to do paperwork, but Patrick stepped up and replaced the flooring with another product. Do yourself a favor and read all the one star reviews before considering doing any work with Novato Flooring. THEY ARE TRUE!!! The owner, Patrick West doesn't care about the products he sells nor the workmanship of the installation. He cares even less about his customers! We noticed installation problems with our flooring immediately after installation. Instead of correcting the issues, Patrick West refused to come and see the problems, let alone make any real attempt to have them fixed. Attempts to contact him were met with hostility (vile name calling and threats), lies and excuses. He has completely ignored claims to the BBB and attempts to mediate through Consumer Protections and the CSLB. After two years of trying to work with Mr. West, we had no choice but to take him to court. He didn't even bother to show up! The ruling was found in our favor. Two separate independent inspections found Patrick West did not follow installation / workmanship guidelines recommended by the manufacturer or that of NALFA. The CSLB cited him for "violation of one or more sections of the California Business and Professions Code." These violations, not only include workmanship standards, but several contract violations - To mention a few, he took 50% down (it's not legal to take more than 10% in CA), and he did not have workman's comp for his workers at the time my flooring was installed (even though he assured me everyone was covered). Patrick West is completely unethical and unprofessional in the way he conducts his business. Aside from dealing with the poor workmanship and bad attitude, Patrick West made numerous unauthorized charges to my credit card (I provided for a down payment only) for charges never discussed or agreed. I disputed each of these charges (which I was found in favor) and eventually had to file a stop against Novato Flooring for any future charges. This behavior is not unique to our case. The abundance of bad reviews aside, if you look him up, he has had numerous claims against him in the Marin County Court, has been cited for conducting business without a license, and any reputable contractor (we have met with many now) will tell you this guy is bad news. We went into this wanting to support a small local business and instead ended up in a years long battle with someone who simply does not care (even with his license at stake) to take any corrective action or cooperate with any ruling against him. Take my word for it, the process of fighting a contractor is not easy! Although, there are numerous law's and agencies in place to aid with any dispute, ultimately it is the consumer who pays the price. Last Friday I was walking by Pini Hardware to buy paint when I walked past Novato Flooring. Small business, with samples outside. I stopped to look as I was interested in getting my carpets replaced with something else, -but had guests arriving the following week so there wouldn't be enough time. Patrick walks out and we start talking. Super nice guy (why all the haters on Yelp??!). He explained the different types of wood (real, laminate etc) and then told me the prices and what would work best for my area. I estimated my floor space and he estimated the price. The next day I asked if he could do it in the next couple days - sure enough, he ordered the product, stopped by and measured, and Tuesday he had Freddie and his co-worker (great guys!) come in and get the job done quickly and professionally. - The price was exactly what he quoted off the top of his head at the shop on that Friday. After doing a repair/refinish of our hardwood floors in early November, we contracted Novato Flooring for new w/w carpets in 2 bedrooms to be completed by 12/15 which they did. A few days after installation, I noticed the 3 closet sliding doors had not been reinstalled properly. Also I noticed the carpeting next to the window was wet & soggy (due to heavy rain outside?). After checking the walls and ceilings, we noted no water penetration except for carpet area. We checked the window and could not see anything. We contacted a roofer who found a crack in the rooftop and he did the repair. After more discovery, there is still repair to be made to the outside decking. I could see the new carpet was OK but I was anxious about any damage underneath the carpet. I called Pat of Novato Flooring and left several messages (week between Christmas and New Years) with no response. Finally I went to the showroom and talked with Pat about my problem. He agreed an inspection should be done and would have his crew come by the following morning to lift up the new carpeting in this small area and then replace it again. I stated I would pay for this extra effort and he indicated it wouldn't be much. No one arrived the following morning and nothing further has been heard from him. I am extremely disappointed with Pat of Novato Flooring especially since he agreed to help solve the door problem which was his responsibility. Uplifting and replacing the carpet for further inspection would be compensated. I should have read the Yelp reviews first before hiring Novato Flooring Company. read more

Pat the other is nothing short of a SNAKE ! The only pleasant part of the job was when he came and I'mgave me a price.. he never covered any of it furniture and there was dust everywhere ! Had to clean up everyday after they left. I told him I needed things covered and he told me I was weird for wanting that (?) That was just the beginning, he covered up mold that was found on the floor and told me I should have had it removed . I showed him pictures of the mold but he said he did flooring not mold abatement. So finally they came to remove the mold but only wanted to spray the wood and cover it again. I had to pay carpenter to do his work. He threatened to put a lien on my house but he never even gave me my contract. I never saw him after he gave me the price.Please do yourself a favor and pay more anywhere else He will stress you out with his stupidity.( I'm not kidding) I've been in construction for 33 years and NEVER have I been involved with a contractor that cares less for his clients! He called me weird, stupid, refered to me as" Dude". Next call is to state licensing board. I find it hard to believe they don't already know about him. I find these reviews perplexing. Pat and his crew were awesome! Pat helped us pick carpet with non-toxic backing, and finished the carpeting job in a very tight time frame. His crew worked extra hours to make sure they were done when we needed them to be. He saved us some money by asking us if we wanted to re-use the existing pad that was still in good shape. All in all, an excellent experience. I found Pat to be responsive by cell phone and all this through the power outage in Marin! We needed new carpet for our stairs and three bedrooms. I wanted to support a Novato business and decided to stop in and see the carpet in the Novato Flooring Center. I told Pat what I wanted, he gave me 2 samples to bring home, he came and measured that afternoon and told me he would give me a price in three days. My husband and I choose one of the samples. After a week I hadn't heard from Pat so I went to three other highly rated stores. I did not have good experience with the other stores. Two did not call me back and the other one didn't have anything that I liked as well as the sample from Novato Flooring. I sent Pat a text and he responded immediately. He gave me an excellent quote and set up a time to have the carpet installed. The carpet installers were great! They stayed late to finish the job. Waited 2 months before writing this. Pretty sure a 1 Star is too much. Do not even think about this place, your head will hurt too much!! Made appt. for the owner to come to house for measurements and he didn't show. Called and had to leave message. Never called back. I called a week later and he gave me some excuse, but I thought I'd give him another try. He showed up 1 hour late, then said he'd get back to me with estimate. Never did. I mistakenly called the store and asked what happened and the person who answered phone had no idea what I was talking about but said he'd have 'Pat' call me. Nope. Never did!!! Upon calling Patrick the owner he replied with a voice mail telling me the floor was installed wrong due to our flooring being uneven.. Without even looking at it. They have now come to our house four times, the first three they told us the issue was our house and it was our problem. Upon getting a licensed contractor from our insurance company (insurance job) that stated the flooring was installed wrong were they were finally willing to come fix it.... But although installed the floor wrong in our whole house they are now saying they will only fix the kitchen.. Patrick the owner began to berate me and tell me I was making up the other areas of the house have an issue and demanded to know why did I not tell him earlier.... he is a rude man who would not let me even finish a sentence. The fact is I let him know a month ago and have a voice mail from him to prove it where he denied there was an issue. I am hopeful today when Patrick was as rune to me as he chose to me it was a heated discussion that was after a long weekend and he will make good and fix the floor they did not install correctly... If he does not thankfully I have my credit card company and also the insurance company behind us.... If they make good I'll update this review to a more positive one. If they don't I will follow up with BBB as well as contact the state licensing board for contractors. Patrick, I have friends that are contractors. I understand the credit card system and it is why we used one with you. Our insurance company has been alerted to this and a report has been filed. His MO is that he agrees to work in the personal consultation quote he does at your house, doesn't write things down or give you a written copy, then renigs on completing the job for all the small bits of the job that you discussed and thought were included in his phone price. He is also very rude and insulting in his responses to you asking to have the job done. So unprofessional and conniving. He came back to me 6 DAYS later after the install asking if I wanted all the small bits done AFTER he insulted me on the date of install when I was asking him to complete the job. Too late! I am a painting contractor in the north bay Pat (Owner) did a job in a house I had painted I went back to do a little touch up from the installers which is very normal. I have to say that it looked very good with a lot of attention to detail in every room. Part of the house had hardwood flooring in addition to the carpet. Novato Flooring had started a job to replace some carpets and install a small area of wood flooring when my Dad died in 2011. While dealing with my Dad's death, Pat convinced me to triple the area of wood flooring and include my kitchen. He said "it will flow visually better with all wooden floors downstairs". I said wood floors in the kitchen are a bad idea and he convinced me that it would be okay. I was too distracted with my Dad's death to argue. Of course, wood floors in the kitchen are a bad idea due to the water problems. Additionally, he charged my credit card for the final balance while I handling my Dad's estate without my prior knowledge or approval. They put the flooring in and absolutely ruined the brand new paint job and dry wall throughout the house!!!! I was absolutely dumbfounded! So I had to pay my GC an extra amount of cash to fix their super obvious gashes throughout the house! Come to find out from the reviews that my experience seemed to be the best case scenario. An undercover sting targeting unlicensed contractors netted 16 alleged violators in San Rafael, authorities announced Friday. The sting, conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, was organized by the Contractors State License Board with assistance from Marin County prosecutors, sheriff's deputies and state insurance regulators. Deputy District Attorney Robert Nichols said unlicensed contractors put residents and their neighbors at risk of serious physical injury and major financial loss from shoddy, uninsured work. They also compete unfairly with contractors who follow the law and obtain insurance and workers' compensation coverage, Nichols said. The competitive advantage is even more pronounced in a bad economy, he said. "In terms of consumer protection, one of the largest categories of complaints we receive are from people who have obtained services from unlicensed contractors," he said. During the sting, investigators posed as homeowners and solicited bids for landscaping, flooring, painting and other work. State law requires a license for any project over $500, and contractors must put their license number in any advertisements, according to the CSLB. The law also bars contractors from seeking down payments of more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the project fee, whichever is less, unless they buy consumer protection bonds, the board said. I set up an appointment to get an estimate to have some scratches fixed in my hardwood floors. They set an appointment for 4 p.m. on Monday and never showed up. I called them about it and they said they showed up at 3:30 but nobody was home. I told them I worked until 3:30 but was home by 4. They asked if I was home now and if they could come by, I said I was so we set another appointment for 1 1/2 hours later (12:30 that day) after waiting 4 hours and another phone call when they assured me they were on their way, I stopped waiting... they finally called an hour after I gave up to say they were at my home, which I told them I was already gone. There was no way I was going to trust these guys to do my floors when they couldn't even bother to show up to estimate the job! $1500 to sand and put a couple coats on a floor... guess they don't want ez money! read more

I completely agree with the unprofessional manner of this company and particularly Pat who has a maturity level of a 12 year old. As others have wrote, he cannot communicate properly and runs his business very poorly. The men who came to work on my kitchen floor, not very big, took them so many days to do and they would just leave all their materials in my garage without cleaning up. I HAD to clean up after them. They made a mess and was super hard to communicate with the actual workers as I don't speak Spanish. I had to ask over and over the same questions so that I was able to understand. No extra information would be given unless I asked the right questions. Also, Pat refused to give us a quote before he started work. The floor itself is fine but Pat is terrible at communications and when you give him the feedback of his unprofessional demeanor he is hateful and mean. DON"T USE THIS COMPANY!!! read more

Could not be happier with our new floors from Novato Flooring. The entire process was great. Owner Pat West came and took measurements and immediately gave us an estimate that was significantly less than the other quotes we received. He was equally helpful when it came to picking out flooring that would meet our needs and coordinate with existing floors in adjacent rooms. The installers were friendly, professional and worked quickly with an amazing attention to detail. I was especially pleased with the way they dealt with a 70s era angled step down into my living room. I know, hard to describe but suffice it to say that the other installers who looked at it seemed a little perturbed and these guys handled it with ease. Originally the plan was to reuse our existing moldings but Pat suggested replacing them and so glad he did. Prying several layers and 40+ years of vinyl out of the kitchen took longer than expected and drove up labor costs but Pat honored his original quote. I could not be more pleased with the process and the end result. Highly recommend, and the negative Yelpers must be bat shit crazy Marinites - the kind who moved here from somewhere else thinking they were now entitled to a fairy tale life.
