Hey, do you like IPAs? If so, there's a place on Foster made just for you! But um. I, personally, wouldn't know an IPA if it hopped up and bit me, so I'm super glad they also have some drinks for the sweeter set, such as thoughtfully-selected white and pink wine and several ciders, not to mention smooth scoops of Salt & Straw ice cream (just one easy step away from a crazy decadent cider float, hmm...). On top of the ice cream -- well, technically before it, but same dairy overload -- I had myself a cheese plate, that featured everything I love about a cheese plate: blue cheese, jam, some figgy love, and some lovely toasted como bread to pull it all together. And you know what else? The owners are WAY nice! We initially went on a super hot day, and all three of them were kind and accommodating, even going so far as to move a big hunka table from the back to the front so our group could get a little breeze. In their first week of business, I asked if our adult scout troop (Portland Badgers represent!) could meet there, and they were 100% game, and did a great job of getting all of us served up right. The space is open and airy and nicely appointed, and the bar is one you'll want to caress. I'm excited for this place and I'd love to see it do well. It's just around the corner from my hood, and enticing enough that I can maybe draw my friends out in my direction. Extra stars abound. Foster, man. Get out here.

I love local beer! I love IPA! I love 80's metal, both on the walls and on the air! I only like NWIPA. On paper, I totally get the concept. However, the ratios are all off. I think they're losing business by catering to the 25-45 year old Fo-Po hipsters living in biking distance of the place. Don't get me wrong, I was drooling over the stack of vinyl beside the bar. I wondered if the Danzig we were listening to was on a record player. I also love the concert photography and at a glance can name most of the artists. If I wear an Iron Maiden t-shirt it's supposed to be ironic. I'm making fun of the fact that, "I'm a rocker through and through." I think Joe Dirte can explain my problem with their business model best. Joe Dirt: You're gonna stand there, ownin' a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistlin' bungholes, no spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser? Kicking Wing: No... because snakes and sparklers are the only ones I like. Joe Dirt: Well that might be your problem, it's not what you like, it's the consumer.

Beer selection is good and the staff is friendly. I'm torn on the atmosphere. The way the place is set up makes it seem really loud. They also have a game shelf which is nice. Overall I like the place and would definitely come back!

A jewel in the Foster-Powell neighborhood! The beer selection, while mainly limited to IPA, is very well selected. These guys do their homework. And while you won't find every IPA, you will find that every IPA they have is good. As the same with the bar menu; small but well selected. It is a truly curated experience. The atmosphere is pleasant and clean and the music is almost always enjoyable. I can firmly say that this is one of the best places for a beer snob to get a beer in SE PDX.

Beer menu. Concise but strong list of IPAs.

5 Stars Midtown Beer Garden: Portland's Oldest Food Cart Pod Gets a Safe, Shady Upgrade…read more431 SW Harvey Milk St (at SW 5th Ave), Downtown Portland If you've been chasing Portland food carts since the early days when they first started popping up downtown, Midtown Beer Garden feels like coming home but with better manners and actual security. This place is Portland's oldest food cart pod (been around since the early '80s), recently refreshed into a lush, gated beer garden with 25+ carts, covered tent seating for hundreds, real bathrooms, shade, greenery everywhere, and most importantly two security guards at the gate. In a downtown that still has its signature edge, that gated entrance is a game-changer. I pulled up, parked, and immediately spotted the full Portland welcome committee: one guy sleeping on the sidewalk looking down on his luck, and a couple of zombies shuffling across the street. Classic PDX. One of them wandered over and, with zero hesitation, asked me for a hundred bucks... or at least to buy him something to eat. We had a good laugh about it. I told him, "Hey man, God bless maybe next time." There's something about this city where the best food and the rawest street life sit right next to each other. It's history. It's real. And yeah, it can feel a little intimidating if you're not used to it, especially if you've got your partner or family in tow. But here's the beautiful part: once you step inside the gate at Midtown Beer Garden, that whole chaotic energy stays outside. It's clean, welcoming, and surprisingly chill. You can actually sit down, enjoy your meal, and not worry about getting hassled. The selection is huge everything from legacy carts to fresh concepts and the vibe makes it easy to do a mini food cart tour. I've stopped in multiple times now, and it never disappoints. Parking can be a little quirky downtown (as expected), but once you're in, it's worth it. You're only about five blocks from the riverfront, perfect if you're planning a walk, some light hiking, or just wandering the city. Shade + bathrooms + security + killer food options = a rare win in this part of town. Look, downtown Portland has always been a mix: some of the greatest cooks, the most interesting people, and yes... a few characters who keep life spicy. Midtown Beer Garden threads that needle perfectly. It gives you the authentic Portland experience without forcing you to eat your taco while dodging drama. Next time I'll probably grab something extra and hand it to one of those folks outside if the moment feels right. A little charity never hurt anyone. In the meantime, this spot gets a solid five stars from me not despite the neighborhood, but because it handles the neighborhood with smart, respectful boundaries while keeping the soul of old-school Portland food carts alive. Highly recommended. Come hungry, stay comfortable, and embrace the full Portland spectrum. Just maybe keep a few extra bucks or a spare meal in mind for the sidewalk philosophers.

I liked this place so much that I went twice while in the Portland area!…read more It's a nice little spot with heat warmers for its outdoor seating. We went during their night HH from 8pm-9pm which we did not realize was a thing until we got there and it was great! Margaritas were $5 during HH and several burritos were $9. Their prices are still reasonable when it isn't HH as margaritas are $8 then and burritos are $14. Between the two visits we tried a couple different burritos and my favorite was the Chile Rojo as it was packed with delicious pork. They have a few salsas you can take and all of them were tasty and flavorful but my favorite was the habanero. Their house salsa that comes with the chips and salsa ($3 during HH) was chunkier and more mild with tomatoes but still very good. The staff at the counter was kind, she made our drinks and told us what was popular. All in all it had good vibes and really good and affordably priced food. This is going to be my go to spot for food a little later in the area with their evening HH and I look forward to returning to try even more of their burrito offerings like some of the ones not on the HH menu.
