We were dying to find Barley Browns IPA the entire trip and luckily after researching online found it at N.W.I.P.A.. So after Gigantic brewing we hopped on the bus and headed there. Just a basic small bar, nothing too special. But they had our beer! Which unfortunately was a massive let down...not sure if it was a bad batch, old batch, taste buds were sick of beer, but whatever happened we didn't like it as much as expected. But as for the bar itself, they sell lots of really good beers in the coolers that you can drink on site...I bought the Russian River Supplication. We got the oysters since they have a small bar menu...they were average at best. cool place to drink beer. simple - but by simple I mean, that's it's not over the top with a bunch of taps and obscure options. I was there to meet a friend, they were offering a bunch of Knee Deep Beers a Bourbon County Stout and a local Cider. Texture and overall ambiance was straightforward, no frills, direct, not much personality with decor. A few doors of bottles and cans. All current and solid selections. I like the minimalist decor. There was a funky above head skylight with hanging plants surrounding. I recommend for good beer. Outside sidewalk tables a plus. read more

So, I came in with a really annoying drunk person, had 1/3rd of a beer then had to leave. The bartender was really cool about the whole thing...entertained him for 30 mins. So, I made a promise to come back at another time. About a month later, i came in with my growler, and really got a chance to look at the bottle selection. If you're a fan of the Hop Wars that have been going on in PDX, you're probably going to want to visit NWIPA. They focus directly on the hoppiest beers possible...including a great selection of Imperials. A few beers on tap, and they'll fill your growler for a reasonable price. Their menu is limited...but very eclectic...meatball sandwich, oysters, ice cream. I've since been back, and have had the sandwich...pretty delicious! read more

Best bar in the neighbourhood. Nice atmosphere and amazing selection. Staff could be a little friendlier but overall they are good folks. Have yet to eat there...too happy with the IPAs for that. It's slim pickings on that strip but it's a mile ahead of the rest. read more

Great bar if you enjoy a good IPA. They have a limited menu for food but at the time we went they had some amazing oysters on the menu which I would definitely recommend. The atmosphere is great and I really enjoyed that they had board games to play while we drank good beer. read more

Great beers and atmosphere. They have a smaller than usual taplist, which I'm not complaining. Sometimes when you go to places with a huge taplist, you just get overwhelmed and indecisive. All the beers on tap are delicious, and are cold. That is one thing I like about this place is that their beers are served really cold. Some places will serve you a beer, but it lukewarm and semi-cold, but this place really does a great job with their beers. The workers are very knowledgable and friendly, and are more than welcome to provide suggestions, or give you samples. Also, if you want something a little lighter than their taps, they also have a fridge full of bottle and can beers that you can choose, which is always fun, because a lot of those you won't see at your typical grocery store. read more

It's hipster especially compared to most other bars on foster BUT it's young, vibrant and chill atmosphere. Excellent drink selection. Many top shelf ciders and beers. Also liquor. We went to Gemini to compare, it's a different atmosphere but I like both. Gemini is similar to hotel sapphire, no tv's and focus on mixed drinks. I love this spot. They've always got a great selection of strong, smooth IPAs from around the NW, most of them locally from Portland or Bend. I love all of the wood and the outdoor seating. My only complaint is that it's always so darn loud. I know, I know, if it's too loud, you're too old. Maybe 28 year old me is a little too sensi with the noise thing, which is why I couldn't take off a star for this particular reason. Staff is always great, nice selection of snacks, great beer, and just a few minute walk from my house. Definitely stop by! read more

When we first moved to the FoPo area, I was pretty happy to see a bottle shop near my house. OK, they looked a little small, a little new, but great beers. After 2.5 years I have to say that this place is fantastic. From hosted tastings to rare beer tapping to fun holiday events, they are just one of my favorite spots in town. The selection of bottles is limited to a few cases, but man, the stock changes and so many hard to find beers! The staff are super friendly, accommodating (let us keep our bikes inside on a cold day that we neglected to bring a lock) and very knowledgeable about the beers on tap and the beer scene. read more

Very excited about the newest edition to the thriving Heart of Foster, N.W.I.P.A. My husband and I have been there a couple of times in the last 2 weeks since they opened. I tried the oysters, against my better judgement (having been spoiled in Newport, OR and subsequently let down around Portland...yes, I'm talking about you, EAT on N. Williams) and they were DELICIOUS (both times)!! Yummy oysters and fantabulous beers around the corner from my house?! Yes PLEASE! I think my husband, who is gluten-intolerant, may be even more excited than I am. The first night we visited, he told the owner about some of his fav GF beers (#1 is Harvester out of Sellwood, OR). The owner wrote them down and a week later when we went back...BOOM! Harvester (2 varieties) in the 'frig. Feelin' the love. :) Interesting to note that the owners live in the Alberta area, so it's like extra points that they set up on Foster, given all the quadrant chest beating that goes on and smack talk our awesome little corner of the PDX universe is victim to. I'm new to Foster-Powell, so I was delighted to find this wonderful and classy beer bar. I couldn't recommend it enough!

This is a great place in an area of Portland I had never previously been, Foster road area, found out about this place by word of mouth and glad to have found it. They have only 4 IPA's on tap but they are 4 really amazing ones. Besides that they have a cooler with a good selection of bottles of all styles of beer, and ciders, they also have wine. For food the menu is very simple and basic but stuff that I really love. Oysters on the half shell, an awesome cheese plate, salami plate and my favorite... hangar steak sandwich. They also have salt and straw ice cream there. Atmosphere was great, although not busy on a Saturday night, I think thats what was kinda nice about it though cause some of the other PDX beer places (Horse brass, Belmont Station ect) can be nuts on a Saturday night. I hope they do well though and I'll be giving them my business again in any chance i can, wonderful beer find in PDX. read more

Great neighborhood beer bar, with the emphasis on IPA's from the NorthWest. As others have mentioned, the selection here is generally top notch, for all that they only have 6 tap offering (but plenty of bottled selections you can buy and enjoy as well if you choose). This place often has limited release, hard to find one offs, and I've noticed that increasingly they tend to always have one barrel aged impy stout on tap as well. A couple of observations (that strike me as pretty obvious, but after reading over some of the reviews on Yelp, that's clearly not the case for everyone.). Portland has an enormous number of places were you can go to find good beer, and even many grocery stores in town will have a growler station where you can get a fill of local craft beer to take home. Quite a few places have a much greater selection of craft beer and imports than NWIPA, and I gather the owner here decided he didn't want to be just another multi tap handle beer bar. So he decided to focus on just one style that is obviously very popular in Oregon (and the NW generally). That's actually spelled out pretty clearly in the website "about" section, so I'm a bit perplexed by some of the criticisms in various reviews on this site (who were confused about the concept here, and felt the staff were insufficiently helpful in explaining why the bar is called NWIPA.) The business strategy seems to be working fairly well, as this place is invariably fairly crowded, even during what are normally considered off hours. The first time I stopped in here, I figured that I likely wouldn't be coming by all that often, as the selection was just much smaller than I was accustomed to seeing in town (at places like Growler Guys, Belmont Station, the Horse Brass, etc.). However, as noted above, NWIPA invariably has one or two IPA's or DIPA's that I can't easily find any place else in town, and the customer service is always friendly, quick, knowledgeable and attentive. Obviously, if the place is slammed, there can sometimes be a wait for your drink order. Also, this is a neighborhood bar that has a lot of local and frequent customers (you know... the kind of place that is so outstanding that there are regulars here). A lot of the folks who stop in are far more than just customers... they're friends that have been coming by for years. Also, in my experience, the staff here are generally engaging, and they are willing to take some time to talk about beer, sports, the news, and other beer centric restaurants and tap houses in town. Personally, I don't find that objectionable at all, and in fact it's one of the reasons I like coming here (as it's become increasingly rare to find this level of service just about anywhere). However, I guess some might be put off by the level of beer geekiness and "chumminess" one encounters here, but no worries. As mentioned above, Portland is teeming with all make and manner of beer bar in town (plenty of no nonsense beer bars where conversation with staff consists of taking your order, bringing you your beer, and leaving you to enjoy it in the warm comfort of your smart phone). So no reason to go here more than once if you find the level of friendly banter and level of customer service one encounters here odious. Of course if you're so drunk or stoned that you perceive racist overtones in the title of this beer bar, I suspect there likely is no place in town that you will find satisfactory. Cheers! read more

I live in the neighborhood of this bar and was looking for a bottle shop when I moved to town and stumbled across this place. It's a newer place for the area. Opened up over two years ago I believe. Two partners opened the place together and always working there, these great owners have a wealth of knowledge about IPA's, Ciders and micro brews. When they first opened they had 4 taps, generally 1-2 taps could possibly hold a IIPA. They have expanded to 6 taps total and offer fresh cider from one of them and seasonal as well. I have tried their cheese plate which is very tasty along with their meatball sandwich which is excellent. They host some sort of beer related event almost weekly and have local artists display their art on the walls. Additionally NWIPA has 3 large coolers full of different varieties of microbrews and ciders. They will also fill up your growler to go at fair prices. Overall this establishment gets 5 stars. This place is a welcome addition to the Foster Arleta Neighborhood area. Open almost a year as of me writing this. The owners are well versed in both food and beer,with experience at some of the more well respected restaurants in Portland over the years. From the name you can guess that IPA is going to be well represented. It is. Four expertly chosen taps running the gamut from mild to extreme double and triple IPA's. Many in the well stocked coolers as well. There is a very good selection of other styles represented in said coolers, stouts, ciders, lagers, sours. And they have just added two more taps. One for rotating Cider and the other for rotating "other" styles of beer. The first rotation being the legendary Duchesse de Bourgogne. At $6 for a 10oz. pour it is a real steal! All the other taps are usually $4 a pint. Food is delicious, local oysters, well crafted cheeses and meats. The meatball sandwich is awesome! The fact that you can pick up Salt and Straw pints and local coffee here as well is a bonus. The walls have rotating local artists hanging works on them. This is a 21 and over place. While this may be a deterrent to some, I have to say it is one of my favorite things about it. I can be guaranteed to be able to have a pint (or 5) without worrying about kids running wild in the place a rare treat in Portland these days. This has become our "local" for the wife and I. Jackson and Dan and Zoe feel almost like part of the family they treat people so well. read more
