I have not had every burrito in Portland, but from the ones I've had, Smart Donkey has my favorite so far. It was very tasty, a lot of food, and great service. We brought a big group and it was so easy to find space to sit and hang out. A lot of it is outdoors but they have a large enough indoor space too. We really enjoyed eating there and I want to try their other burritos!

AMAZING BURRITOS AND MARGARITAS! My daughter comes here all the time and I finally drove to Portland to have dinner with her here. Wow! I will be back for sure. I had the Zumpango. It was delicious. The green sauce is to die for! You won't be disappointed. I was too mesmerized by the burrito to even think of taking a pic!

Adovo Verde: yup, lip smackin' delicious.

Deliciously satisfying. The burritos on Happy Hour (not all of them) are a deal for $7. And choice of three margaritas for $5 on Mondays and Thursdays means get me two. Tip: even if you like Mexican rice I always skip it in burritos, just my thing. Enjoyed the Adovo Verde. Super friendly window gal taking orders. I look forward to returning.

Their burritos are top notch. A little spendy, but you see where the extra money goes. A lot of burritos just rely on salsa, but these are really well-made burritos inside. Good draft beer selection, and a delicious margarita, which was tangy & not overly sweet. Check out Monday's $5 margarita happy hour! A great place for outdoor and patio dining this summer. During the winter, they close the doors and fire up heaters. There's a parking lot and back. A note to yelp they are indeed open on Monday

This place is sooo good EVERYTIME!!!!

I visited Smart Donkey for dinner. The parking situation was good. They had a lot in the back and there was street parking. I came for a burrito. It was a little pricey so if I visit again, I'll come during happy hour. I got the cochinita special burrito. The pork was a little on the saltier side but I style liked it. I felt that the burrito was pretty balanced with the other components. There were four different salsas to pick from to add to your burrito. The salsas were in little to go containers. I got one of the green ones and it added some great flavor to the burrito. The restaurant is a little out of the way for me but I wouldn't hesitate to visit again.

Really delicious fish burrito! The guac, chips, & salsa are also really good, very fresh & flavorful. The guac is very lemon-y which I loveeee & the habanero salsa is rich but bright & spicy but not too spicy. I wish the veg burritos were a little more robust, especially for the price. The pobre rico (bean & cheese) is great though, the beans are well seasoned! Solid spot for a burrito!

Heard about this place from the Oregonian. Was expecting it to be a food cart but it's really more of a standalone burrito stand - so don't look for a food cart pod. It's just up the street from super deluxe with lots of street parking. Menu looked solid. Lots of options including some vege ones. Opted for the fish burrito and the spicy pork. Got a side of guacamole - sadly out of chips tonite. For those wary of Covid they got a huge open air eating area Food wise. Fish was super super salty. Wouldn't get again. Spicy pork was pretty good. Red sauce is very very spicy

    Good sized burrito.

Delicious, hearty burritos. Plenty of hot sauce varieties. Friendly service and didn't wait long for food to be prepared. The fire pit outside would be great with friends gathering around. Only downside is cold weather if you're eating outside. They do have some patio heaters though. Also can be noisy if they are hosting parties. I enjoyed my fish burrito though, it was tasty. Did I mention the 14 Trimet stops in front? So convenient.

First off, happy cinco de mayo! This is the coolest little spot to grab some good Mexican food! I grabbed the El Grodo and it was so so SO GOOD. The vibe is really cool here. Indoor and outdoor seating with heaters. The staff is very nice. If you're looking for a bite come get it!

What have I gotta do to make you hungry? What have I gotta do to make you share? What do I do when Elton strikes me? And I wake to find burrito there What do I do with guacamole? What if I can't cook like grandmother? What do I say when there's no leftovers? Always seems to me That Donkey seems to be the Smartest word

It's been a while since I've had a burrito, but Smart Donkey may well shorten the time before I have another. Burritos and drinks are pretty much the only things on the menu, but when you do something well, there's no need to try anything different. At the time of my visit, there were 11 different burritos on the menu. My wife had the Uruapan (Michoacán style carnitas) and I went with El Basico (carne asada). Both were terrific. They seemed a bit on the expensive side, but a single burrito provided two very satisfying lunches. The leftovers reheated quite well. The location is a one-truck cart pod. There are a couple of picnic tables and seating at the bar inside the covered space. The bartenders take food orders and pass them along to the truck itself, that forms the back bar. Outside, there are two large high top covered tables where you can eat standing up. For those familiar with the neighborhood, the truck is in the former DIY car wash location just north of Powell.

They have a different kind of "Agua Fresca" every day (strawberry, melon, etc) and I get it with a little tequila in it. So refreshing!

5 Stars Midtown Beer Garden: Portland's Oldest Food Cart Pod Gets a Safe, Shady Upgrade…read more431 SW Harvey Milk St (at SW 5th Ave), Downtown Portland If you've been chasing Portland food carts since the early days when they first started popping up downtown, Midtown Beer Garden feels like coming home but with better manners and actual security. This place is Portland's oldest food cart pod (been around since the early '80s), recently refreshed into a lush, gated beer garden with 25+ carts, covered tent seating for hundreds, real bathrooms, shade, greenery everywhere, and most importantly two security guards at the gate. In a downtown that still has its signature edge, that gated entrance is a game-changer. I pulled up, parked, and immediately spotted the full Portland welcome committee: one guy sleeping on the sidewalk looking down on his luck, and a couple of zombies shuffling across the street. Classic PDX. One of them wandered over and, with zero hesitation, asked me for a hundred bucks... or at least to buy him something to eat. We had a good laugh about it. I told him, "Hey man, God bless maybe next time." There's something about this city where the best food and the rawest street life sit right next to each other. It's history. It's real. And yeah, it can feel a little intimidating if you're not used to it, especially if you've got your partner or family in tow. But here's the beautiful part: once you step inside the gate at Midtown Beer Garden, that whole chaotic energy stays outside. It's clean, welcoming, and surprisingly chill. You can actually sit down, enjoy your meal, and not worry about getting hassled. The selection is huge everything from legacy carts to fresh concepts and the vibe makes it easy to do a mini food cart tour. I've stopped in multiple times now, and it never disappoints. Parking can be a little quirky downtown (as expected), but once you're in, it's worth it. You're only about five blocks from the riverfront, perfect if you're planning a walk, some light hiking, or just wandering the city. Shade + bathrooms + security + killer food options = a rare win in this part of town. Look, downtown Portland has always been a mix: some of the greatest cooks, the most interesting people, and yes... a few characters who keep life spicy. Midtown Beer Garden threads that needle perfectly. It gives you the authentic Portland experience without forcing you to eat your taco while dodging drama. Next time I'll probably grab something extra and hand it to one of those folks outside if the moment feels right. A little charity never hurt anyone. In the meantime, this spot gets a solid five stars from me not despite the neighborhood, but because it handles the neighborhood with smart, respectful boundaries while keeping the soul of old-school Portland food carts alive. Highly recommended. Come hungry, stay comfortable, and embrace the full Portland spectrum. Just maybe keep a few extra bucks or a spare meal in mind for the sidewalk philosophers.

We were seated right away, wherever we wanted. I picked a shady indoor spot booth. I'm not sure, if it's the right booth, I then realized, they have the swings, by the window facing Burnside. I wanted to move, but hubby won't! No matter how much I begged, he ain't movin'. Then, I said: 'the music here is too loud.' His answer? 'There's always something!' So I stayed. I checked out the Patio. It might work, for the group. At least, there's one of us, who love alcohol. That may give them a reason to come. (She's driving the rest of the group). Since we are heading to an event, not far from here, we didn't have much time to take leftovers home, we didn't have a cooler, it's almost 80 degrees out, so we decided to eat something we could share. We picked the BBQ COHO Salmon Sandwich. Seared Coho salmon glazed with Bourbon BBQ sauce topped with baby Aragula and pickled red onions on a Portland French toasted potato bun. There's a $2 discount recess during happy hour (3-5pm). We were there at that time. (Is that the reason WHY the music were soo loud?) It was served with hand-cut fries. Both were just the perfect taste (delicious), and size for both of us. But, for some reason, I was still tempted to have something else. We looked at the desert menu, and decided on the Peach Crumble. Food taste so much better, when shared! Enough said. (We waited so long for this one, that we almost didn't made it to our event! We were enjoying our time here, that by the time we got to our car, we were rushing, and made it two minutes later we would have been late!) Negative: Music is too loud! Restroom could be improved. Do we need to see those words written on the board? I agree about ICE, but, that is not something we want to see.
